Fire crackles warmly behind the gate, homely light cast in the dying evening. The Inquisitor’s quarters are inviting even when the Inquisitor himself is not there, charming, not quite home but not without its comforts either. Especially with the kettle sitting, still warm, beside the fire. The tea has long since steeped, pleasantly scenting the air and their conversation with hints of citrus. 

Not quite home, but Nin shares a smile over his cup as the evening light fades to orange; sunlight and specks of peel in the tea and isn’t there something about the way the light of the night blends into the comfort of a shared pot and a smile, and how could a poet think of anything else. Where is he to find another who will talk with him into the darkness the way Nin invites him to sit in his chamber well past dinner, well past evening. 

It isn’t nothing. There upon the bed is a blanket with embroidery Renenh knows, the weaver’s hands well familiar to his own; not home but not without its lingering memory. And memory is what they share, laughter too. Who else could know these stories so well? Who else can tell them with a smile as wide as their teeth allow? 

Two of them by armchairs unfamiliar so they sit upon the floor. No customs to find except their own. The fire built by a wave of Nin’s hands and Renenh brought the kettle and the leaves, easy in the way they talked around moving through the space around each other, empty gaps where their bodies fit. Skyhold is cold in the winter and the sun sets early.

But there are two mugs, one chipped and one painted yellow, with warm tea to wet their tongues when they tire of talking. 

Even if they never quite do. 

What to call a friend who is also home? Piecing together a strange new life out of the scattered remains of the old, singing songs in a language only they speak, sitting so their knees bump with each refill. 

His eyes are the same color as the setting sun. Through the glass window the dying sunlight envelopes the two of them, curling steam off their mugs, they are both friends of the dead. Dusk is only when the light matches their moods. Renenh has one hand propping himself up and the other drinks his tea slowly. It won’t go cold.

Not with Nin’s warm eyes and sunshine and the magic singing a fire into the grate. 

Not quite home, but not unfamiliar. 

If he were even a hair more his father’s child it would bring the tears already burning a threat behind his eyes falling down his cheeks. A joy so deep it simply cannot be contained. To weep for the setting sun and the smiles and the way Nin’s laughter brings harmony to Renenh’s. They’ve spent nearly the entire evening talking over nothing and everything in the same measure. 

He doesn’t want to leave. Never does, really, like a child with their favorite playmate always trying to squirrel more time out of the day. But the sun has well and truly set now, citrus and spice from the empty cups and the embers of Nin’s fire the only orange still left in the air. 

Renenh stands with a sigh and smile, setting his cup back by the kettle. Satisfaction turning his bones to lead. But his heart is light, and nothing is more buoyant. 

A goodnight kiss. Quick and familiar as every other. Renenh kisses Nin’s cheek in the same motion he uses to set down his cup before leaving. Orange scented sweetness. Home in a friend who keeps his tea warm and his fire burning through the night.

Introduce your Inquisitor

My faves!

I have completed DAI twice, my Inquisitors are Branwen Lavellan and Simon Trevelyan. I love them both so much.

Branwen was the lead scout of her clan and felt happy and fulfilled with her friends and clan members around her, before she was sent to the Conclave as an observer. As shocked and confused as she was to be called Andraste's Herald, her instincts to listen, protect people, and help those in need served her well as Inquisitor. She had also not expected to fall in love, and though she knew Solas was holding something back, she really, really didn't expect what was eventually revealed. She still hopes to divert him from his course. Somehow.

Simon was the black sheep of his family, steadfastly devoted to his mage twin Rory. He accompanied Rory to the Conclave and the two of them shared the Anchor, becoming Heralds together. Simon thinks of himself as not much more than a warrior, but he proved to be socially and politically adept, and combined with Rory's intellectual and magical skill, they made a formidable pair of leaders for the Inquisition. Along the way, he fell deeply in love with Dorian. Post-Trespasser, he's stepped down as Inquisitor to join Dorian in Tevinter.

Recently I had commissioned the lovely @buttsonthebeach for a fall themed Fic for Rhaella & Solas. What I got was the most wonderfully written Fic I'd read in a long time. I could easily picture the smells, the colors and the warmth she described so vividly that I had to have an art piece to accompany it.

There was only one artist that I knew could illustrate such a beautiful warm story. I am so beyond honored that I got to commission the talented @sunshinemage for this piece. It's absolute perfection pairs beautifully with the Fic and I cannot stop staring at it 💛 Thank you a million times Rory! I LOVE IT!

Lots of bad news of varying kinds today, so fun/happy OC thoughts:

Mihrisel plays the violin, and Merrill teaches her Dalish songs, which are her favorite to play.

Esther loves Fereldan soup, and no one in Kirkwall can make it quite right. It’s the only thing she cooks for herself, basically.

Nainsí doesn’t like dogs, but she loves cats. She plays around a lot with Ser Pounce-a-lot, both when he’s Anders’s cat and when he’s given to a kitchen girl in the Vigil.

Merrill and Mihrisel join another Dalish clan in...9:43 Dragon or something. Haven’t quite worked that out yet. Possibly Clan Briathos, one of my OC Dalish clans.

Nainsí’s favorite colors are navy blue, grey, and yellow.

Esther can do handstands, and sometimes will in the middle of a conversation if she’s bored or understimulated. Merrill, Varric, and Isabela are perfectly fine and used to this. It drives Carver and Aveline up the wall and they both rail on her about it.

Nataliya loves puzzle games, including June’s Knot, a Dalish wooden puzzle with no solution. She takes them with her on stakeouts and the like to keep her hands busy while her eyes are occupied.

Mihrisel can’t decide if she wants Andruil or Mythal vallaslin, if the clan she joins will let her get them.

Rory often forgets that not everyone loves math as much as she does, and she’ll sometimes yammer on about something math-related for ten minutes and come back to Ashley’s eyes glazed over.

Arynn always needs snacks but forgets to bring them with her, so Vetra always makes sure the Nomad is stocked with plenty of protein bars, but Arynn is the worst for accidentally grabbing the dextro ones and suddenly having someone knock her snack out of her hand.

Zufit loves stuffed animals, and she has a stuffed qorach (extinct Rannoch animal) that she takes to Illium with her.
