~ SWTD: Still Here AU Part 11: ~
In Times of War:
Last chapter before the official Rescue Arc begins.
TW: War, PTSD and Death.
Part 12:
'Attention, all personnel. Message from the mainland has stated that the rescue will be here by 13:00 hours. I repeat 13:00 hours. Gather your belongings and prepare closing down.'
Roper had to admit. He found great joy in making an announcement instead of Rennick.
It was a busy yet strange morning for Beria. The crew ate their breakfast as they worked on getting the rig closed. None of them had done this before. Only gotten themselves ready in swapping shifts or leaving it stable enough for another set of crew to arrive. They'd all been trained, but it was the case of remembering.
Roy, Caz, Finlay, and eventually Innes and Muir worked on moving food from the pantry and into the containers. Leave nothing purchased from Cadal's pockets behind. The last thing you want is to be in debt to them. Brodie and Raffs focused on The Stack with the help of Engineering and Pontoons. There is no need for an explosion now. Luck was on their side, and they'd like to keep it that way.
O'Connor left the Pontoons to Fergus. He accompanied Rennick to Administration to collect all the important documents Beria will need. Despite Rennick seemingly hating everyone, O'Connor was someone he always tolerated. He was one of the few who never got a verbal beatdown and knew to stay in his lane. Plus, working in the depths of the rig meant the pair never saw each other. Just quick acknowledgement as they entered the canteen. Currently, the pair sat outside the building, eating their breakfast in mostly silence.
'I can't believe we're doing this,' Rennick muttered as he chewed through the sausage barm that dripped grease and tomato ketchup. He never knew how hungry he was until his infection. Before, Rennick just survived on coffee and stress. He often wondered how he hadn't dropped dead from it all. 'Sneaking us back to the mainland and hoping they let us go.' Of course, it was McLeary's idea.
'If you have a better idea, then I'm all ears.'
'No. But...' Rennick did not have any other ideas. 'Operation Spy?' Once again, of course it was McLeary. 'We're not spies, DĂłnal. Look at us.' He pointed to him. 'Tinker.' He pointed to Dobbie, who was walking by. 'Tailor.' He pointed to Innes. 'Soldier.' He pointed to himself. 'Twat.'
O'Connor tried not to laugh through the sip of his coffee. Then, it hit him.
'Did you say my first name, Davey?'
'Oh get fucked, O'Connor. Of course I know your name. I know everyone's first, middle, that you don't have, and last name.' He tossed the rest of his sandwich into his mouth. 'Now, get your specks on and help me.'
Like the old fud he was, Rennick sulked towards his office to begin the search for documents. With a last sip of coffee, O'Connor followed. Good thing, too, because he side-stepped a tendril Rennick was going to use to drag the older man along. 'Alright. Alright.'
'Well, move it.'
Apart from the knocked over books, Rennick's office was practically untouched. Might be because The Shape didn't make it this far before dying. O'Connor went first, put on his round glasses, and began to shift through.
'Surely, they wouldn't need half of this?'
'You'd be surprised,' Rennick scoffed. 'They'll want all of our documents and any damage updates.' He paused. 'Which I never reported.'
'What could you even put in a report now? Beria damaged from an ancient entity we drilled through and royally pissed off?'
Okay, Rennick had to chuckle at that. Just one chuckle, though.
O'Connor continued to shuffle. From daily records to first aid and payments. All were needed. He tucked the most recent file of contracts under his arm and slid the rest of the files towards Rennick, who lingered halfway through the door. O'Connor went to stand, but a glint from a picture frame caught his eye. It sat on a shelf under the desk, and curiosity got the best of him. The resemblance was undeniable. Of course it was Rennick. He was younger. Early 30s. Leaning against a military jeep with two other blokes. They all held their issued rifles with wide smiles and dripping with sweat as they wrapped cloth around their foreheads. Rennick wasn't wearing a shirt, where a tattoo could be seen on his upper arm. What it was was hard to tell due to the angle. O'Connor glanced to his manager, who was shuffling through the files. He slowly walked over and offered the frame. 'I don't think you should leave this behind, eh?'
Rennick looked up from the paperwork, and his eyes widened. He gently took the photo and gazed at the memory. The same feeling from yesterday came back. The nostalgic feeling and the yearning to be young again. O'Connor noticed the hurt look in Rennick's eyes as he dazed off into the past.
The day was a scorcher, expected for the desert. As the soldiers could finally take a break and check their equipment, Rennick was called over by the men who stood beside him. George and Kenneth. The trio had been thick as thieves, and George was going to make sure this was a memory to keep. Rich lad from Cornwall. Always had the best technology. The camera was a birthday gift from home. He gave it to a clearly bored Officer, who had to be walked through how it even worked. Rennick remembered rolling his eyes. He was always impatient.
'Come on, whilst we're still young!'
'Young?' Geroge called as he jogged over. 'I thought Churchill dragged you out of a retirement home, Rennick?'
'By the end of this war, I'll be frog-marched into one.' The three wrapped one arm around each other's shoulder and raised their rifles with the other.
'Say Churchill!'
'Churchill!'
Click
'Africa?'
Rennick snapped back to reality. 'Yeah. We'd just captured Fort Capuzzo. What about you? I never saw you there.'
'I was never in Africa.' O'Connor leaned against the desk. 'I was in Dunkirk.'
'Oh, you poor fuck.' The pair shared a chuckle.
'What happened to the others?'
'Kenneth went to join the R.A.F,' Rennick explained. 'George and I went home at the end of it all and stayed in touch.' A pause. 'He died from a heart attack four years ago. Lucky bastard.'
'And Kenneth?'
'Haven't the foggiest.' If he had to guess, he was either dead or the one sitting in a retirement home. But, enough about that. Rennick focused his attention on O'Connor. 'Didn't agree with Ireland kicking their feet up with The Swiss and Spaniards?'
'Yep. It wasn't right. We were at war. Lives were at stake, and I had a job to do.' With a brief story to tell, O'Connor lit a cigarette. He knew Rennick wasn't a smoker. 'I was a driver. You felt so powerful driving troops across France's fields and roads, avoiding enemy fire. Younger me saw this as an adventure.' Like Rennick, a look of nostalgia washed over him. Then, the hurt look crept in his eyes. 'Until I got too cocky and sent the us into a death trap.'
The crushing pain of the jeep landing on his leg ran through his body. It was a feeling that would never leave. Some would say having a constant limp for the rest of your life was enough punishment, but for O'Connor, it was when he saw...
'Nigel? Nigel? Answer me, please. Get this jeep off me.'
'NIGEL!'
The pair fell silent. They looked at each other for some form of comfort. There was no need for clarification. War was Hell, but there were good moments. It's how you stayed sane. The toughest challenge for both men was returning to civilian life. But, here they were after thirty years. They had to be thankful for that.
Rennick broke eye contact and huffed. 'Well, let's get out of here.' No reason to dwell on the past. Rennick went to move. And he couldn't. Whenever he tried to move his head and 'arm' out of the doorway, he just lightly shook the office. He was stuck. 'One moment. Just...J...' Nope. Completely stuck. 'Can you help me?' He looked at O'Connor, who was trying with every fibre of his being to not laugh. Which lasted about five seconds. He let out a scream-laugh, leaning on his knees and sounding like a dying pterodactyl. It was the mood booster he needed.
O'Connor's laugh must be contagious because Rennick just started to laugh along. His was a hysterical cackle in comparison. Everyone on Deck heard the pair, and Muir could see what the problem was, thanks to his height, causing him to snort.
Through their laughs, O'Connor leaned against Rennick's head and helped him shuffle the arm out, which was causing the block. If he could get himself in, then he could get himself out. Once free, Rennick pulled backwards, causing O'Connor to trip onto the handrailing, but still they laughed.
When all was said and done, they began to head for the Deck.
'So, what was your tattoo?'
'That's something I'm taking to the grave, Mr. O'Connor.'

im so close to being sold on your anniversary theory, but one small thing, isnt there a screenshot of either a dailybooth or formspring from after oct 19th where dan says something along the lines of him not knowing concretely his relationship status? or do you think that oct 19 became their anniversary for them like retroactively, so AFTER they started dating they identified that as their first date & the "start" of the relationship?
(anniversary theory, related posts)
i'm looking thru the 2009 timeline about this so thank you for the excuse to go down memory lane 💛
i think you're talking about this november 5th dailybooth?
Tumblr media
where dan says his relationship status is "?"—that's not really a surprise to me? we know they didn't exactly start their relationship by going "are we dating?" "yes!" "cool! we are boyfriends now."
like, i think it's not uncommon for people to figure out their anniversary in retrospect, rather than knowing from the outset?
the earliest i think they might have labeled their relationship was the uma thurman week/when they made plans for dan to spend the run-up to christmas with the lesters in 2009, but i would also believe it if they didn't start labeling their relationship until like 2014.
(not in a sense of their relationship was platonic until 2014 but more in the sense of them going 'holy shit, we've been together 5 years, why haven't we called this dating yet? it's literally our five year anniversary'. @freckliephil & @phulge may be better able to put this 2014 idea into words than me, we were workshopping it when roper was here).
but none of this changes the fact that functionally, their first vacation together was absolutely timed for 6 months since they first met in person? which makes it an anniversary trip, and makes the rest of my theory hold up too.
thanks for the chance to dive back into a research mindset & re-test my theory! i'm still rocking with it & i hope you could be too.

So I showed the early stuff off a bit a few months back, but I've finally completed the first draft of Act 1 of my Lancer adventure path, Kindness of Strangers! The deets can be found on the pilot net discord, but:
LRBT-III, otherwise known as Blanche to the locals. This sun-baked dustbowl of a planet has the high honor of being one of the few habitable terrestrial bodies that anyone has discovered in the Long Rim- and probably the only one that's actually any use to anyone. Luckily- or not so luckily, if you ask some people- it was Union that found it first. Well, about 70 years ago when they stumbled across this star system they got it in their heads that the Long Rim's days were numbered. There’s untold millions living out there scattered along the emptiest shipping lane in the known galaxy who'd need a way out once no one needed to pass them by, and by Christ the Buddha Union was gonna be there for them waiting with open arms.
All of that is background, though. You? You’re a bunch of mercenaries who got their hands on a couple of GMSes, decided to make your manna selling violence for pay. Worlds like Blanche don't take to colonies very well, so even two generations in there's still plenty of frontier out there being settled and railroad tracks being laid. The people out there struggle day by day to survive, and people like you are there to protect them from those who got sick of the hard life. Not everyone out there has the guts to stand up for the little guy- that's why you're called Lancers.
A setting and a campaign all in one, Kindness Of Strangers and its (eventual) follow-up Dancing With the Devil are a series of Wild West-themed 2-mission adventures intended to take players from 0-12 as they find themselves embroiled in the midst of a corporate conspiracy to overthrow the Union-backed government of the isolated colony of Blanche and a ploy to seize control over a nearly completed Blinkstation. All the while, a strange religious movement worshipping an eons-dead alien civilization grows ever more influential in the background...
This campaign tackles themes of colonialism, nationalism, corruption, and conflict between indigenous peoples, settlers, and immigrants, all in a world where well-meaning intentions have gone sour and the ghosts of the past have come back to haunt it. It comes with:
- A setting guide for LRBT-III and its weird-as-hell star system!
- A 0-12 campaign split up into two books, Kindness of Strangers and Dancing With the Devil, that are made up of three 2-mission adventures each. And then a final mission to tie things up.
- 4 Alt-Frames: the IPS-N Nemo, the SSC Painted Lady, the Horus Roper, and the HA Grant (still working on these)
- New Reserves! (still working on these)
- New Exotic Gear (still working on these)
- New NPCs! (still working on these)
Things to look forward to:
- Rallying a town to fight off a horde of bandits!
- An epic duel at sunset!
- Accidentally walking into a partial metavault and escaping with the only scars being mental ones!
- A weird amount of references to the works of Tennessee Williams and Arthur Miller, like a probably legally dubious amount!
- Exploding plants!
- Exploding wildlife!
- The **CHRISTHEBUDDHASAURUS**
- Helping striking miners fight off Pinkertons!
- Investigating the bombing of a water filtration plant!
- AND MORE
...so this is really my first time doing this kind of thing so I don't entirely know what all to put here BUT I've put together first drafts of both the Field Guide to LRBT and Kindness of Strangers Act 1: A Streetcar Named Desire. They're not in any state where I can charge for them- I'd call them "playtest and editing ready" rn- but I figure I can share them here so people can give notes. If people think it's cool I could possibly do a kickstarter or something to get the money needed for art and help with editing and lcps and such.

Okay, but a buck x bucky rodeo!AU set in present day.
Gale 'Buck' Cleven being this reserved but big time breakaway roper having grown up out in South Dakota brought up in the rodeo scene, having learnt everything he knows from long cattle drives and just generally working on a ranch. His father always wanted him to make something of himself, pushing him from a young age to get in the arena and travel the country competing and winning big time. His name is well known amongst the rodeo community and he's respected by all of them because he never became cocky about his Champion buckles and trophies, he was in it for the long haul and he loved it (and of course he had his favourite horse named 'Baby' that he could always count on and was the reason he had 90% of the buckles he did sitting in the glass cabinet at home).
Then one day in comes this big full-of-himself new young bull-rider, loud and rambunctious and a whole new overwhelming presence amongst the other cowboys. John 'Bucky' Egan, tearing up the other bullriders and winning everything under the sun.
Gale never really had much to do with the bullriders when he went to the rodeos, staying with the few other ropers he made fast friends with along the circuit (DeMarco, Crosby) and he tended to stay clear of them, they were too loud, egos pushing the limit and in the rodeo world a lot of the time you stayed within your own lane/crowd.
Gale's first up close and personal interaction with John was after he'd just done his run in the breakaway, he'd left the arena and was making his way back to the other boys behind the chutes after hitching his horse along the fence to watch the rest of the rodeo from behind the scenes and ran smack dab into the tall brick wall that was John Egan as he was getting ready to climb up on the rig and seat himself on one of the biggest angriest bulls in the scene, ZigZag.
"Might wanna watch your step there, pretty boy. It's time for the real cowboys to show ya'll how shits done."
The cockiest grin Gale had ever bore witness to shone down at him like a ray of light, which only made a frown crease his brow and a deep annoyance bubble away in his chest. This guy had only just gotten here and the ignorance was palpable.
"You've been here for 5 seconds and you're already talking smack like you've been on that hunk of an animal for 8. Might wanna keep quiet til' you can put your money where your mouth is."
Gale didn't think it was possible but that grin in front of him only widened as the other man leant forward that smidge further until Gale had to tip his jaw back slightly to look the bullrider square in his mischievous blue eyes from underneath the brim of his hat.
"Big talk yourself, comin' from a man called 'Buck' when you ain't even sat on the back of one yourself and let it do just that." John drawled with a wink before turning away and hoisting himself up on the platform above the chutes.
Gale could only stand there, mouth slightly agape as the audacity hit him squarely in the chest amongst the smell of cattle and dust.

The Rev. James Reynold Cannon, 83, lately of Travelers Rest, SC, passed away at his home on May 6, 2023, after entering hospice care in January. Jim, as he was known to family and friends, was born on March 27, 1940, in Wilmington, NC to the Rev. Abram Cannon and Magalene Burney Cannon of Wilmington.
Jim left school in ninth grade to enter the workforce and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1959 before receiving a medical discharge. He earned his GED while in the military, and later went on to attend Bob Jones University from 1971 to 1976, where he studied to enter the ministry.
In 1959, Jim married his high school sweetheart, Marion Dale Millinor Cannon and went on to have three children: Amelia, who is married to Pastor William Harper; Michael, who married the former Sheila Smith; and Gregory, who is married to the former Susie Roper.
He later married Dorothy Dorman in 1989 and two adult children were added to his family: David, who was married to his wife Bobbi Jo, and Trisha, who is married to Cary Alexander.
Jim worked mainly in sales before entering the ministry at the age of 36. He then became the pastor of Summit View Baptist Church in Greenville in 1976. He served as pastor of that congregation for seven years. He later became the director of the Greenville Rescue Mission, where he served from 1983 to 1986.
In 1990, after his marriage to Dot Cannon, Jim began a new ministry in Greenville called LifeSearch. This ministry worked mainly with homeless men who wanted to seek a new life in Christ and regain a place in the workforce and the community. As an outgrowth of the ministry, Jim began Faith Bible Fellowship church and the Academy of Life in Greenville. In 1998 he also founded KingsPointe Academy, a low-cost Christian school designed to offer an affordable Christian educational option to the families to which he ministered. That school continues to operate as part of the ministry of Bethel Calvary Baptist Church in Taylors.
In 2001, his ministries then moved to Travelers Rest where he also founded KingsPointe Industries to provide jobs for those who participated in the Academy of Life. He retired in 2021 at the age of 81.
Jim's love of God and service to his fellow man were hallmarks of his life and are legacies he sought to pass down to all his family.

"For you, I recommend...” - The Rap Pundit’s Picks From the First Half of 2023
****PART 1 of 2****
Tumblr media
*If you are interested in tracking my favorite songs released in 2023, I will be updating this 2023 Tidal Playlist all year long*...and yikes it’s already ridiculously long.

Been a while, how’s everybody doin’?  Me, I’m just doing the same ol’ husband/father/jaded American worker thing, exhausted but well aware of how fortunate I am.  As with any art, the irony is that inspiration is too often tied to depression, frustration, and a need for change.  I regarded the past few years of rap music as some of the strongest in recent memory, which is not a coincidence, considering how increasingly unhinged our world appears to be.
From the standpoint of major releases, strong underground releases, and a growing range of different sounds and aesthetics, I would argue that 2022 could go up against any of the greatest years in the history of rap music.  The nostalgia factor will always hold court over recency bias whenever folks who claim to be in the know get into such conversations, but I think 2022 had something for everyone - and those somethings were at the highest level that each respective lane has to offer.  Now here at the midpoint of 2023, we have a year that is extremely shallow when it comes to noteworthy releases trickling down from household names that loom large over mainstream rap music, but instead there are a seemingly unlimited amount of under the radar gems washing up on our streaming shores on a weekly basis.  In 2023, if you want to hear the best rap album of the week, there’s a good chance that it won’t receive a shout-out from On Thin Ice’s New Music Friday post (but a HUGE s/o to CROWNTHEM and RapSurvivalGuide for digging deep every week, and not just catering to your own personal biases or whoever kisses your ass for a slice of that sweet, sweet Twitter Share pie...but I digress).  ;-)
For the past decade my musical tastes have shifted, grown, and sharpened, and while getting older has certainly played a factor, my own interests in rap music have expanded due in no small part to the names I mentioned above, as well as many others.  Thank you all for doing what you do every week, it takes discipline, a good ear, but above all else, a real passion for the music and artists that share their gifts with the world.  Staring down at the back half of the year (July already!?), I hope to continue to share the same love for the art form, and put at least a few folks on to dope songs or albums that they otherwise may have missed.
So for my “Best of 2023 so far”, I tried to do the following:  pick *some of* my favorite songs of the year, NOT IN ANY PARTICULAR ORDER WHATSOEVER, choosing one song from each artist (not including features or producers, both could have multiple showcases within the list below), and trying to touch on all of the different styles of rap music that I love.
Hope you enjoy, let me know your thoughts, and see you when I drop Part 2 (which I’m aiming to do within the next two weeks).....

Known Molly Houses
The first known mention of a molly house is from a 1709 book the History of the London Clubs by Ned Ward. He mentions a “certain Tavern in the City” where mollies met. However Ward did not mention a name or location because he was “unwilling to fix an Odium on the House”.
For the most part we know the names and locations of molly houses because of the molly house raids. This is why most of themolly houses on this list are from the 1720s when there was a series of molly house raids. We shouldn't assume that the gaps with no known molly houses means there weren’t any during this period. It’s more likely that these gaps reflect periods where molly houses remained a well guarded secret allowing them to operate unmolested by police.
