RANDOMRECORDWORKOUTSPRINGTRAINING2017 Session 10 Queen: Jazz Time: 45 minutes Songs: 13 Calories burned: 337 calories per song: 25.92 Calories per minute: 7.49 Scouting Report: Ok, by show of hands: who here does NOT know who Queen is/are/were? If you raised your hand, please show yourself out. Get out. Get. Out. Right the f#*% out. Jazz is the seventh studio album by the British rock band Queen, released in November 1978. The first album produced by Roy Thomas Baker since he had co-produced their 1975 album A Night at the Opera. The album's varying musical styles were alternately praised and criticized. Jazz has sold over 5 million copies to date. You know why? Because it is Queen!! And at a great time in their career! They were full swing and at the top of their games. They should be named King (#seewhatididthere)! The magical front-man wizard known as Freddie Mercury (the best in show biz if you ask me) begins our operatic adventure. "Mustapha" is perhaps an homage to Freddie's home? It is a brilliant mathematical rocker. "Fat Bottomed Girls" is of course the high charting single you will recognize. Also the theme song for many bar going women everywhere...at least in my experience. It is kind of disturbing, actually and sort of makes cringe a little inside. It s a quick, radio friendly gem though. About as classic rock as you can get with a line like " Get on your bikes and ride!" The next song, "Jealousy" is more of a ballad salad. On a diet after the heavy rock sauce from previous. Pretty, pretty, etc. "Bicycle Race" is up next. Personally, I feel as though this song should follow "Fat Bottomed..." Simply because of the aforementioned bikes line. Huh? Yeah? You hear/see it now, right? No matter. THIS is the reason to own this album in my opinion. An almost punk rock Billy Joel. Such harmonies and range. And hey!!! Who DOESN'T like Star Wars, Freddie?!!?! WTF, dude. Just kidding. Brian May's guitar are immaculate conceptions here (#seewhatdidthere). Sister tones (?? Is that a thing??) to Pink Floyd if you ask me. That is followed up with the return of Kansas level rock, with "If You Can't Beat Them". Perhaps Yes, even. Yes the band, not the affirmative actions. Multi-level harmony and vocal prowess too. Side one ends with a mildly forgettable track called "Let Me Entertain You" -written specifically by Mercury for the audience. Side two opens with "Dead On Time". Perhaps a lesser known but certainly overblown track full of sweet (suite?) and sour moments. I think this is where The Darkness learned a few tricks. A cacophony of harmonies. Written by May, it contains some very impressive guitar work. The song ends with the sound of a thunderbolt, followed by Mercury screaming "You're dead!" The thunderbolt was actually recorded by May on a portable recorder during a vicious thunderstorm. The album's liner notes humorously credit the thunderbolt to God. "In Only Seven Days" is a song about making you a man from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Just kidding. (#seewhatididthere). Actually, it is a soft and subtle showcase of this ban's amazing range. There is literally no one like them. They can practically pull off anything. "Dreamer's Ball" follows and has an almost vaudevillian vibe. Good old ragtyme jigs. The next two tunes are "Fun It" and "Leaving Home Ain't Easy"- both mediocre and filler. And I am not just saying that because "Fun It" has disco undertones...which now that we are on the subject; gross Queen. Just... Gross. Gross in that it is disgusting use of your talents, and gross in that it is negligent for the protection of your listener's ears. It's fine though, because they recover with "Don't Stop Me Now"- one of Queen's most famous songs. It s a piano driven rocker, which Mercury was so good at live. Basically, it might just be their "November Rain". Actually, it may be the inspiration for G 'n R's aforementioned chart topper...I fully expect G 'n R fans to chime in here and correct me if I am wrong. I feel as though Freddie probably was listening to a LOT of Elton John's Yellow Brick Road around this time. Finally, the album comes to an epic conclusion with "More of That Jazz". Hold up, hold up, this isn't jazz at all!! It's borderline metal! It does also humorously sample parts of other songs on the album. Pretty witty. Truly, this may not be the magnum opus for Queen's catalog, but it really is an excellent example of why they were and still are so revered today. Aside form a few duds here, Queen equals Quality and you could certainly do your ears a favor by listening. Queen "Bicycle Race" #RANDOMRECORDWORKOUT #RANDOMRECORDWORKOUTSPRINGTRAINING2017 https://stevecanmakeanythingnerdy.tumblr.com

Prepping For The Picnic Pt. 4: Festival Fashion and Style
The Chosen Few Picnic & Festival is a huge reunion of friends enjoying a day of house music. It’s also an incredible display of personal style. Music Festivals are always known for the eclectic fashion style of their attendees. The Chosen Few Picnic is no different. House people have a style all on their own. So what do you wear to the Chosen Few Picnic & Festival? Today, we are talking style and fashion for the picnic!
Wakanda Chic
#WakandaForever is the official theme of the Chosen Few Festival and Picnic this year. The success of the Black Panther movie brought a resurgence of African inspired fashion and style. Why not celebrate the beauty of our culture and history with apparel inspired by the culture? Stores like the Silver Room and Kayra Imports both located in the Hyde Park Neighborhood have great apparel items to stay Wakanda Chic!
Flirty & Feminine
For the girly girls, you can never go wrong with a flirty sundress or a chic maxi dress. Pair them with really cute accessories for an effortless look. However, I’d avoid wearing heels! It’s inevitable; I see it every year, women practically breaking their ankles in the name of fashion. Be cute but be practical. The festival is on grass and dirt. There are plenty of flat sandals or even fashionable sneakers that you can pair with your dresses to complete your look with style. Not to mention, why ruin your feet (dirty, dusty feet aren’t cute) or your fabulous sandals?
Boho Chic
A popular trend in festival fashion is the Boho Chic look. It’s for the wild at heart, carefree type. Big natural hair, braids, twists with cute headpieces, soft denim, floral prints, funky hats and flowy dresses.
HOUSEHEAD STYLE!
The genre of house music created a culture and lifestyle about freedom and individuality. Wide Leg pants, t-shirts, funky shirts, wild prints, converse sneakers, towels in your back pocket and more. House people made their own fashion rules and came ready to dance. Comfort was key. House lovers remained stylish and made it look effortless. I put together a group of some of my favorite house and dance music apparel designers who create clothing for the house and dance music lover. If you are looking to express your love for the culture of house music, these designers have what you need!
Househeadz Gear/House Music Apparel
Nikki Hill, the Owner, and Founder of HouseHeadz Gear House Music Apparel wanted to take House Music Apparel to another level by Designing over 35 high quality, yet affordable apparel in the industry that would bring nostalgia and serve as a conversation piece to those of us who are lifelong house heads and house music lovers. We are honored to serve as your HOUSE MUSIC APPAREL HEADQUARTERS and we are located right on the south side of Chicago.
RagTyme Designs
RagTyme Designs was created by Richard Avon Guyton better known as “Avon”. RagTyme is the parent brand of my artistic creations which includes custom abstract painting, tattooing, interior decorating and fine art. His love of shoes and fashion inspired him to personalize the Converse® All Star “Chuck Taylor” shoes to promote self-identity from an artistic creative perspective. “RagTyme Chucks” are hand painted with customized designs that will surely make you stand out whenever they are worn. Every shoe is designed to reflect each client’s individuality as they represent my client’s ideas combined with my artistic vision. As a result, clients wear their “Chucks” with pride and the utmost confidence knowing their shoes are uniquely designed and are guaranteed to be unlike any other pair of “Chucks” in the crowd!
It's House Baby and U 'memba dat?
Owners Mace & Tim set out in 2007 to have a tee shirt that represented their love of House music and the culture they were raised in. After months of collaborating on designs and styles, they launched their first tee's in 2008 at the Old School Picnic. Each Design brings you the essence of a culture and time, a movement and a moment in time that those true to house can appreciate!
Black Widow's Web Apparel and Merchandise
I created a line of t-shirts and merchandise that displayed my love of house music. House is so many things; the culture, the music etc. My merchandise represents a simple and classic way to showcase your love of our music, culture and lifestyle! Summer items include Tshirts, Tank Tops, and wine glasses.
Our House Wears
Our House Wears is a brand of clothing representing and dedicated to HOUSE MUSIC 🎵. Wear “THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOUSE” is the theme. We want you to feel and look good wearing what you love!!
CHOSEN FEW OFFICIAL MERCHANDISE
Support your favorite DJ Collective by shopping for Chosen Few Merchandise at their online store! The key to #ChosenFewPicnic style is comfort. It's a full day outdoors so it's imperative to be cool and comfortable!
As always, see you on a dance floor!

A Tribute to One of Our Own
Some people come into your life and leave an incredible imprint. Kimmie was one of the first people I met on the Chicago House Scene when I returned after a long hiatus. She affectionately nicknamed me T.K.O. She was funny, full of life, and always made me feel welcome no matter where I showed up. She was a friend and someone that I partied with for years. When she passed two years ago, the loss was felt around the Chicago House scene because she was truly a staple in this community. She loved house music, and you could always catch her on dance floors all around the city. She loved house music, and she loved her DJs!
On Friday, August 11th, The Chicago house community gathered to honor one of our own. Kim Carter-Gueringer, affectionately called Kimmie or Kimmie Disco was a beautiful spirit and soul. She was known across this scene here in Chicago as a lover of the music and one who stayed on a dance floor grooving to the music she loved. Friend to many, she loved hanging out with her family and friends. She also loved her camera, and you hardly saw her without it. She was always taking photos with friends and family. I never fully appreciated it until she was gone and I saw the many pictures circulating on social media after her passing. Since her untimely passing, her friends and family have kept her memory alive. Friday night, the 2nd annual “Chuckfest-A Dance for Kim” was held at Bassline and her friends once again gathered to pay honor to the woman, mother, and friend that we love and miss dearly.
Presented by Arise Radio and RFK Promotions, the 2nd Annual Chuckfest featured some of Kim’s favorite DJs. Black Terry, DJ Cheez, Dee Jay Alicia, Tobi G, James Vincent and Philander Gaters. Everyone came to pay homage to Kim Carter-Gueringer wearing their favorite pair of Converse, a/k/a Chuck Taylors. You never saw Kim without her Converse and her ruby red lipstick! Some also wore specially designed shirts created by artist, RagTyme Designs. A portion of the evening's proceeds also went to benefit Kim’s children. As I entered bassline, I felt the love. We gathered, we hugged one another, we loved on one another, sharing our stories and memories. Friday night was one of those beautiful moments when our community puts aside petty differences based on what side of the city you live on and what style of house music you listen to. At this moment, it’s all about the music and the groove and honoring a woman who loved to see her people partying together.
vimeo
I couldn’t help but think how proud Kimmie would be of all of us; coming together in her honor. A community unified in our love for her. It was a perfect tribute to one of our own. Rest in Heaven Kimmie; your spirit lives on in all of us!
Until next time,
See ya on a dance floor

2017 CHOSEN FEW FESTIVAL LINEUP!!!
THE DAY OF…WHAT TO EXPECT
The Line: This is one of the largest music festivals of the year. Whether you come at sunrise or during the middle of the day, there will be a wait. The key is to be patient. The key is to be organized, have your tickets ready, and your group’s stuff in order. That helps the line move faster! Lugging stuff into the picnic takes time. Show each other common courtesy and some patience. We are all going to have a good time. That starts with a great attitude! I STRONGLY SUGGEST purchasing your tickets in advance. It really helps the line to move faster during the day!
The Police: If you are a “first responder” I can tell you from experience, the police are usually amicable. They allow us to load our stuff, and then go park our cars, in the morning. The early morning crowd is friendly and positive. We know we are getting ready to wait so we just enjoy the time, talking and meeting new people! The end of the evening is a different story. Some years, the police have been agreeable in letting us load our stuff into our cars and other years, they have blocked traffic off and we’ve had to walk with our equipment back and forth. Try to stay respectful and courteous and hope they do the same. Just know you will get out…eventually.
Parking: Parking fills up quickly on festival day, the earlier you arrive, the better your chances of finding a decent space. I must implore you, PAY YOUR PARKING TICKETS!!! The city is out in full force writing tickets and placing boots on cars! Pay your tickets or at minimum, get on a payment plan so you aren’t looking at a boot on your car at the end of the night! Those who purchased parking spaces as part of a package may park in the lot specified in their package. All vehicles must arrive no later than 11am. Those who purchased remote lots may park there and there will be continuous shuttle service that will run throughout the event. Remote Parking is $30 per car.
The Crowd: The Chosen Few Festival is a huge reunion. Have a camera ready because you’ll probably run into people you know! After 2pm, the park is pretty full and you are just moving around very slowly. Stay patient and enjoy.
Wardrobe: It’s a festival and it’s usually hot. Be comfortable, comfortable shoes, clothes are mandatory. You are dancing and walking for the majority of the day! Be COMFORTABLE! Ladies I beg you not to wear heals! I see plenty of “feet injuries” each year! It’s a park full of dirt and grass. Save the heels for the after-party. You can be cute and chic in sandals, gym shoes or flats! Save your ankles!!!
If you are a guest in someone’s tent there are a few things you should always remember:
Bring a Drink to share!
Bring a good attitude; speak to everyone in the tent, not just the people you know. It’s common courtesy
Have a chair
Say thank you! Your tent hosts have spent a lot of time and money preparing for this. A little gratitude goes a long way for your friends who got up extra early to ensure you have a place to chill!
Ice and Water are always needed
Camera/Smartphone
Portable phone charger and extra batteries
Cash/Credit (for merchandise)
Sunscreen, hats, fans, towels etc
Toliet Paper
Some Don’ts
Do not bring a music setup!!! It’s a MUSIC FESTIVAL!!! Music is non-stop all day!
Do not come to a tent you were invited to empty handed! That’s tacky!
If you are an invited guest, don’t complain. Your tent hosts have been up since the wee hours in the morning preparing for today to ensure you had a good time. Just say thank you!
Save the drama! This is a drama free festival. 25+ years without one incident, let’s keep it that way.
No chairs on the dance floor! There’s an entire picnic area full of space for your chairs! Stay off the dance floor! We want to dance!
Bring your grill but do not bring commercial/industrial size grills or propane, kerosene or any type of gas grills.
There is no selling or commercial activity allowed on festival grounds other than authorized vendors and sponsors. Guest engaging in unauthorized and/or unlawful activity will be removed from festival grounds.
No glass containers, no propane tanks or generators are allowed in the park.
Drones: Unauthorized filming by drones is not permitted and will be confiscated.
That about covers it! I hope to meet some of you at the festival this year! I'll be there both days in my "Black, White and Bling" themed tent! If you see me, stop by and say hello!!
Until next time,
See ya on a dance floor!
