CW discussion of suicide
Oh yea, Dave's pure insatiable desire to live. I'm insane about that. No matter what, he's persisted, he's lived through poverty and homelessness and abuse and so much fucking pain and hatred and heartbreak and suicidal ideation is never mentioned in the storyline, and in all honesty, I think he never considered it as an option. His pure disposition has coerced him to stick to life like a cockroach, and truly, there's a question of knowing when to quit with that, taking davetrap into consideration. I think this is something so interesting to reflect on, his vivacity and love for life, pure inability to not stick around, it's truly impressive. But why? God, it's truly difficult to get to the bottom of, is it his entire personality from birth? Was it the environment he grew up in? The pump and grind of the New Yorker streets as a homeless young boy, freshly kicked out of a horrific orphanage, did that need of daily survival recontextualise his entire life? I think that's something to consider, that system of finding food, water, shelter, and simple plesures formed him thoroughly, there's no other option than to work through the grating times as you simply need to get it done. Higher thought about what it's all about wasn't particularly an option, that deadish boredom with life wasn't there to linger on, and I think that it was a mix of Dave's personality firstly pushing him to simply keep going then that pushing working to form him as a person. I don't think he holds contempt for suicidal people as I see in some people with that vivacity for life, the idea of ending it all is simply so unreachable and unviable that if he knew someone he was close to genuinely considered the thought it'd be just frankly terrifying. Terrifying in the way the vacuum of space is, this thing so uncomprehensable and unhuman, yet experienced by someone you love. It'd certainly take some elbow grease to get Dave to realise that someone's suicidal ideation was serious, but when he does, he's just down right scared. I don't think he'd be the best source of comfort, Dave's way of comfort is very centric around him, because at the root of it he's simply expressing his fear of the matter. 'It'll break my heart, don't leave me, don't leave me like Henry did, I'll miss you so much'. I think Dave views the world as a him first situation, he's very selfish, and I think that's fair, I think everyone should be a little selfish. The environment he grew up in reinforced the idea that to stay alive, he had to put his own preservation first, and literally everything else afterwards, even his own comfort and joy. I truly think Dave, not even sane Dave, would truly put Jack first in a life or death situation. I think he'd spend an eternity finding a way to beat the system, and 10 eternities on top of that, and finally decide to put his own survival first. To him, living is truly a blessing, and the only blessing he's ever received. He'll claw and bite to sustain it. Quite literally, as well, im sure in any street squabble he'd poke someone's eyes out and kick them square in the nuts and scratch all their skin off. I really don't think he's ever thought of the gravitas that comes with his insatiable lust for life, that it's not something many people share, that other people might simply wanna blow their brains out instead of being springlocked 100 times and coming back as well as ever. He truly a one of a kind, Davey, I'm sure he'd boil himself in magma 1000 years if it meant to live 10 more.

Chapter 230 Trivia
We've had 3 chapters of nothing but Medusa backstory and content and I am living for it.
Tumblr media
Oak trees are symbols of strength, endurance and heritage, and bring the idea of mighty growth from tiny, humble beginnings in the West. But in Japan, this relation doesn't seem to exist. If anything, Japanese oak would make you think of bokken (wooden practice swords).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oxygen rusts the devices' components, which is why the pile in Manaus was full of duds that didn't work, even with a new battery.
Modern components are stored in plastic/epoxy, ceramics, or even glass. Glass can last for thousands of years… Problem solved?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(If the solution ends up being to put the Medusas in glass bubbles (~chapter 29) that hold a vacuum (~chapter 53/58 depending on which vacuum pump they use), the fact the devices wanted a technologically advanced civilization in order to live forever will be pretty funny…)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
New angle for the pyramid! This time we don't see any of the "petrified trees" or whatever they were, unless we only see the tops of the "trees" and not the "roots"?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This cover page is reminiscent of one of the illustrations from way back in volume 3.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is another example of the Medusas on the moon having no idea what's happening on Earth: they believe that by copying what Senku did (what they'd heard over the radio), they'd activate a device. What they didn't realize was that the signal was getting converted to sound.
Tumblr media
The oxygen does more than decay the devices' components: it prevents them moving. Whether or not they can still think in this state is unknown, but it makes you wonder if they understand the fear of being petrified…
Tumblr media
The Medusas make it sound like they're familiar with other species that are much more mentally developed than humans, but I wonder how much quicker they were expecting humanity to wake up because of that. A hundred years? Ten? Only a few months?
Tumblr media
There was no hesitation in the Medusas' actions here, and it makes me wonder about Senku's goals: are we going to have to wait chapters to find out what Senku wants to do, like we did with Xeno's blinking (Araxá) or what Gen asked Francois to tell Whyman (we still don't know)?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Doing this may also have cost him the trust of everyone on Earth: this is objectively a very concerning move to make when the fate of every living human is in your hands, and most of them don't know you very well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stanley aiming his tiny grenade net launcher at the huge swarming mass of Medusas is pretty silly looking, but I can appreciate the effort.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Medusas made a living Faraday cage to block all of the radio waves, but because of the apparent density of the ball, I'm not sure there's any light getting in there either.
Tumblr media
I thought this chapter was clearer than the other chapters so I didn't include as much explanation.
If you are confused, I highly recommend rereading and focusing on Gen's simplifications.

Half of my body.
Half of my mind.
It's an ache deep within, leaves the extremities cold and numb, feet too rooted. Zoro can't hear anything in the silence, not the air, not his blood, not his heart.
It lays there, by his feet, beating and bleeding and breathing without him.
The night paints the sky in such a spread of darkness, the stars gone from their perch, too empty, too void, a vacuum that spreads—keeps spreading.
Still, his heart beats, slow and steady, chest filling with air, blood pumping.
Zoro.
Black, it spills to the ground. In puddles, in streams, in rivers, into seas, into an ocean.
A whole body.
Opaque, the colours blend into a mess, indescribable as he remains rooted.
His fingers too cold, his arms cemented, his feet bolted down.
Within the black, in its abyss, swirls blue, bright as they always are, spilling black unto a blank canvas.
There's a smile there, he knows, he sees but doesn't. Blind to it, unprocessed and undeveloped. A photo that won't show.
In the silence of it all, he hears nothing, sees nothing. Not when his blood continues to bleed, his heart continues to beat, his air continues to spill.
How does one continue living when you're half of a person?
In the dark, he moves, sluggish and stuttering, like a glitch, possessed and stilted.
Holding on, grasping, grappling. His fingers don't cooperate, refuses to touch, refuses to grab.
His palms slip and slide, fighting for purchase, for a place embrace.
In the distance, they look at the moon together in its vacant spot, heart unbeating, blood trickling, breath leaving.
How does one continue living when you're half of a person? His question remains unanswered. He doesn't.

"Hyper-Space - The Simulation of Servitude & the Architecture of the Mega-Machine: 'The 'Human' & his Guide or The Jornery through the Nine Circuits of the Divine-Fractal-Zones know as: Hell"
(a continuous working draft).
Fractal realities issue out of pre-rendered holographic sockets - digital orifices spewing hyber-cyber frequencies that rapidly enmesh, our Human's flesh with hair-fine liquid like razor wire that cuts into our Human's anatomy followed by a sudden pull that starts a sucking vacuum with the strength of dozen sonic booms as he just comically disappears into what would almost amount to an eye of an needle - siphoned through a split atom sized hole (or so it seemed) within nought of nano second, sqeezing him out finally from the jelly-wet and npe doubled dilated hole - as an infinite explosion of malignant echo's cast ripples of neon rainbows that flood his pores with its atomic waste, skin peeling radiation the works.
Our Human's now in -- hyper speed - fast -- for-warding in some manically mind bending metamorphosis of matter, flesh - bone, from the bottom up to tip of his cranium - as ripping sound seems to reproduces his anatomy in a ultra smooth pale yellow plastic returning him to the manikin man he wasn't. His mouth now a perfect O, his eyes: two Obsidian black pearls sucked into place.
Our Human since sucked and spat out now stands rigid in the center of square cell - four walls, ceiling and floor, all glistening with mother of pearl, his toes then his entire feet start sprouting fine fissures of gold (enrooting) circuit lines slowly branching outwards across the floor in multiple channels which had rapidly root him to the spot (before he had even attempted to move a foot) until entire floor is a perfectly engrave in the finely threaded gold circuitry system.
Hyper--speed -- each four corners of the room fracture out in hyperbolic-geometrical-fractal fissures - suddenly shoot outwards in all directions until the entire four walls are engraved in a cybernetic virus. it's once golden circuitrty is now breaking out in a spontaneous blooming of some kind of sick binary bacteria fugue its glows phosphorus: cybernetic cancerous growths.
It starts circuitrty channels start issuing out from his toenails before inverting into our Human's legs up until his anatomy is entirely enmeshed -- then within a nano second and the all but last empty vacuums of space within cell are filled with via fractals of intricately arranged geometrical lines of fine liquid diamond razor wire bites into his flesh causing four seconds of indescribable pain until they pass through entirely finally -- suddenly his mouth piece begins issuing a semi-translucent klidoscopic light filling the last of any remaining space causing a pin prick black hole in the bottom corner of the cell which then in a nano dilutes suddenly sucking at him and the fractal room into its seemingly gaping black oblivion until he emerges breaking through a pink plasm film until he emerges screaming into what was once - Mexico now - Neo-XiKo, and the year - 2510 now a vast wastelands with clusters of chemical labs grinding mutanted strains of the rotting meat of native tribesmens rotting corpses mashed together with malign vines waiting to be processed in the gas chambers. Torture chambers. Chambers and more chambers.
Opium poppies with sigils carved into the pods (an attraction tactic to harvest Need Freaks far and wide) growing wild mutated overgrown covering old abandoned crack flats and cat houses. Pumped but limp seeping milk into thousand drip drops from their oversized pods that were rapidly lapped up by the Cat people before the milk hardened (sometimes in long urine-like slashes) up like dry wax, huge pale puddles of drying gum, the junkies wait once the beasts have had there fill. Dozens of Ayahuasca fill silos circle the chemical labs where raw opium is rendered into Hydo-Fent, cooking up even more potent opioids via chemical combinations - an infinity of numbers making mouculer geometry - atoms arranged into new chemical nightmares. Never ending nightmares.
Vast gigantic Fly Agaric mushrooms droop over the wastelands their vast red caps decomposing slowly in the sun causing the speckled white spots to melt and slide off the caps like some hallucinogenic cottage cheese.
Dozens of thin crucifixes sixty metres high tower into the sickly yellow sky swaying over the crack stalls and brick factories and torture cells, like macabre satellites of wood and meat, the crucified long since stopped screaming now puretrfied sacrificed nailed high corpses now only alive via the parasites that feast off them ... while they lay in wait for hosts of crow, vultures and so on. ...The very First of the Crucified nothing lives - baked to beautiful bleach pink encrusted husks, rendered that way from the radiating rays of the atomic eye, the pulsating blood orange that is the, Sun still rising (has it never) to claim itself as the only legitimate god of the Wasteland: Helios.
Our Human walks already blistering naked reborn dead - and continues into the first Circuit, his guide known simply as the Other, walks beside him, imitating his every move and gesture, our Human or HIM and his doppelganger guide now begin to finish the tame tour of this first of the nine Circuits...They slowly pass in pulsations through yet another field of Opuim poppies - forever in process of Harvest, by once tortured souls who continue to slice sigils into the oversized poppy pods to siphon its "Need" (an enegry of monumental parasitic importance in this realm) it issues out an essence of white smoked delirium tinged with aniseed, it rapidly forms in a sepia spirit that's nano-siphoned off for eartly dimensions, enriching the rich milkly sap that draws drips and dries rapidly under the Sun, their black blades expertly gather the fattening opium gum, as both Human and his Other (or Guide) pass through these ghosts of this spetic ozone essence, an eternity passes until both come to stop at wire fence that itself is covered in handmade small straw dolls with pins covering each and everyone, also - scarlet occult sigils seem scrawled across practically across all of them - those small dolls - all made of tightly wrapped fraying string as dry as old bones. Licked red. The pins too ... red with rust. A galaxy of them spetic pricks dripped a Zippy yellow coloured oil from each and every thousand needle eye. The sand absorbs it like a toilet mop absorbs piss.
At last the wire gate eerily swang open, letting them pass through as it swings back into place behind him and his guide, walks on, the a malignant stench followed by a frantic wind passes through them leaving a think kildospocic coloured membranous plasma across their now naked bodies: this signifies the next Circuit is in post.
The transition caused or Human to suffer a vivid sensation of a spider slowly crawling across his brain. A rancid shudder gooseflesh and a ripple of fear caused a tightening of his balls. He sensed before being informed by his guide he had entered the following Circuit, a sudden explosion of De jvu so intense it caused his knees to buckle as soon as he thought it would never leave it left. And he regained his composure.
Coffin lengthed-sized rectangular blocks of quivering green jelly containing screaming children stretched as far as the eye could see, (in all directions), they were seen lite up but for the black everywhere ... was HIS first vision. In seconds they solidified to stone and turned black disappearing but for a vague green outline of lines, all but the screaming children remained, and it never stopped until it was eventually a vague unconscience din.

A Builder, a Researcher, and a Rooftop, Ch. 11: Camellia sinensis
prev | next | index
Also on AO3
------------
Eyes tired from having to read under the dim moonlight, Qi scanned the diagram again, double-checking for errors. Then he triple-checked. The builder would be here soon, and he needed to get this one right. Out of every diagram he’d made in recent memory, this was one of the most important ones. For some reason, his usual, near-absolute confidence in his designs was absent today. Why was that?
A shadow fell over the page. “Hey, what’s that?”
The builder was standing over Qi, peeking curiously at the diagram.
“A new diagram.” He handed it over to them. “It’s a sort of beverage container. A very interesting design. It uses a vacuum chamber to reduce the amount of heat convection and conduction on the liquid from the outside. The contents can therefore maintain a significantly different temperature to the ambient environment for much longer than it would in a standard container.”
“S-so…basically, hot drinks stay hot longer, and cool drinks stay cool longer.”
“Basically, yes. Does it seem feasible to build? I have a vacuum pump, so I can assist you with that part of the process.”
They hummed and scanned over the blueprint and the materials list. Qi still felt a little uncertain. It was reasonable, right?
“Oh yeah, this is absolutely doable.” Qi felt a small ripple of relief. “Already have all the materials. I can get it done in a few days.”
“Wonderful,” Qi replied, trying not to sound too excited.
The builder rolled up the diagram. “I guess this is for tea?”
“It is. When you brought hot food last week, it reminded me of a device that I found mentioned in several data disk records. Apparently working people in the Old World used these so-called ‘thermos’ things to keep their coffee or tea hot on their commutes. I managed to recreate the design, and I’m curious to see if it works.” That was definitely the only reason. It most certainly wasn’t also because Qi felt obliged to repay the builder for their kindness from last week.
“A ‘thur-mis’…huh? Fun word to say.”
“Yes. Based on the root ‘thermo-’, meaning ‘heat’. A fitting and memorable name for a product.”
“I’ll definitely remember it.”
“In any case, I figure we can test it next week, if possible. I can brew my afternoon tea, put it in this container, and we can see how it fares when you stop by that night.”
“Sounds cool. I’ll get it to you as soon as I can. Shouldn’t take too long.”
“Good,” said Qi. “Hopefully it works as intended.” The builder nodded, not knowing the full weight of his words.
------------
Qi idly turned the thermos over in his hands as he waited for the builder, feeling the hopefully-still-warm tea sloshing around inside. He perked up at the sound of their steps, grabbing the cups out of his lap.
“Oh…”
He looked up to see the builder on the landing with two boxes of food in their hand. They pursed their lips. “Maybe the food was a bad idea. Forgot that we’re on a slope.”
Qi looked down at his hands, thermos in one and cups in the other, with nowhere to set anything down to pour it. “It…appears I neglected to consider that as well.”
The builder let out a snort. “Well, I guess we can at least sit down here,” they said, tapping their foot against the flat deck at the bottom of the slope. “View’s not gonna be as good, though.”
“Best not to let this go to waste,” Qi said as he stood up and carefully made his way down.
They sat down across from each other. The builder passed a box over to Qi’s side while Qi set a cup down by the builder. He twisted the thermos’s lid off carefully, and flinched when a puff of steam immediately rose up and fogged his glasses. The builder laughed.
“I see that it works,” Qi said, blinking as the fog gradually dissipated from his lenses.
“Good job us,” the builder said as they held out their cup for Qi to pour. They nodded in thanks as he topped it off, and brought it up to their nose to breathe in its warm, grassy aroma. “Do you drink the same tea all the time?”
“Depends,” Qi said, pouring his own cup. “Usually I just use the local stuff. Minimally withered fresh tea leaves. More efficient time- and money-wise. But if I’m in the middle of a big project, sometimes I order black teas from Highwind. More expensive, but more caffeinated.”
“Better taste, too?”
“Taste is not my priority. Caffeination comes first.”
The builder let out a chuckle that sounded more concerned than amused. “It’s 10:30 at night, Qi. We don’t need to be getting caffeine-d up at this hour.”
Qi shrugged. “One cup probably won’t affect our sleep too much.” He took a sip, pleased to find it as good as a fresh cup. “Hm. That does remind me, though. I do have a bag of mint tea sitting around in my pantry. I never drink it, since it’s not caffeinated, but perhaps it would be good for occasions like these.”
A cheeky grin rose on the builder’s face. “Did…?”
“Yes, yes, Mint was the one who gave it to me,” Qi sighed. “He thought it was funny, but he forgot that herbal teas don’t have any caffeine and are next to useless for me. Luckily, I reminded him of that, and he has yet to repeat the same mistake.”
The builder’s grin wavered a little at the corners. “Uh—harsh, but okay.”
“It was a present, so I didn’t throw it out,” he backpedaled. “I’m sure it’s fine, it’s just not the tea I need. If we’re opting to avoid caffeine this late at night, we might get some use out of it after all.”
They took a sip from their cup. “Sounds good. I’ve only really had the tea you give me sometimes when I pop in. A different kind sounds interesting. Plus, I’m sure Mint will be happy to know you’re finally using his gift.”
“Perhaps I’ll inform him of the joyous occasion in my next letter,” he intoned, drawing a snort out of the builder.
“Oh right!” they suddenly exclaimed. “Food. Hope it’s still warm…” They lifted the lid off their wooden box.
Qi reached down and did the same with his own box, revealing two freshly steamed buns. The sweetish smell of the bread blended seamlessly with the smell of the tea. He took a bite out of the soft bread and the sweet and tangy meat filling, washing it down with the grassy flavor of tea. The pleasant warmth from both was more than enough to stave off the chill of the desert night.
The builder raised an eyebrow. “Good?” they mumbled through a mouthful of bread.
Sublime, Qi thought. But he just nodded with a hum of assent. The same subdued smile from several weeks prior crossed the builder’s face again. The warmth in his body only seemed to grow at the sight.
“The tea’s really good with it, too. Thanks for that, by the way.”
Qi shrugged. “It’s nothing, really.”
The builder raised an eyebrow. “Is it? It’s not precious minutes shaved off the workday to brew some extra tea?”
Brewing an extra cup for the builder whenever they came over (day or night) added another 3-5 minutes per brew. It also cut into his water supply by a small, but noticeable amount. Regularly giving them tea forced him to order a few extra units of water every time he needed a refill. But despite that…
“I don’t particularly mind.”
The builder stared back at him blankly—wait, no. That was a look of surprise. A subtle one, but surprise all the same. “Huh.” The mild disbelief on their face slowly faded into a more thoughtful look. “Well, still. Thanks. It…feels nice to know that you’re thinking of me.”
That got his mind humming. Hopefully his face didn’t show it. By some instinct, Qi was able to clamp his tongue down before it made him say anything silly out loud. All that left his throat was a noncommittal hum.
“Shame about the view, though, gotta say,” they said, tapping the railing next to them. The empty street’s not as interesting.” They leaned their head out to get a better look below. “Feels like someone’ll pop up to yell at us from down there.”
“Indeed,” Qi said, looking up. “Our view of the sky is limited down here. If we want to keep bringing food and drink up here, we might be stuck with this, unfortunately.”
“Hmm…” The builder looked towards the rooftop, pondering. “Do you know the angle of this roof?”
“No…?” Qi frowned. “Why?”
“It’s fine. I can take a protractor to it later.” They took another sip with a smile. “Bring some tea again next week. Think I might have a solution.”
------------
One week passed, and Qi was once again seated on the roof with the thermos full of mint tea in his hands, wondering what the builder had in store.
“Hey!” He heard the builder call up the stairs. The first thing he saw when they emerged was the energetic grin on their face.
“Tiny table!” They brandished an odd-looking stool triumphantly over their head.
Qi squinted. “What?”
They brought it over next to him and smacked it down, hitting the metal with a clack. “Tiny table!” The top board was perfectly level, the legs cut slanted to match the exact angle of the roof and fitted with rubber feet to keep it from sliding down. “Now we can put tea and stuff down so we don’t need to move. Isn’t it cute?!”
“I’m…not sure if a furniture item can reasonably be described as ‘cute’…”
“Aw come on,” the builder pouted. “It’s tiny!”
“I’m sure its utility far outweighs the…cuteness.”
“Okay, well, why don’t you put that thermos down and we’ll put that to the test?” they said with a roll of their eyes, though he could hear the levity in their voice.
The table was big enough to comfortably hold the thermos and the two cups Qi had brought. Solidly constructed, too. Not a single wobble or slip.
“I still think it looks cute…” the builder mumbled.
“And I still think that its utility is its defining feature,” said Qi as he opened the thermos and poured their cups.
“Agree to disagree,” the builder hummed, taking their cup.
Qi lifted his own cup to his lips. The warmth of the tea was offset by a mild chilly sensation–the menthol in the mint. It felt incredibly pleasant running down his throat. He let out a hum. “I have to say, despite the lack of caffeine, I actually quite like it.”
“Yeah, it’s pretty good,” the builder said. “Mint got it from…where?”
“He bought it in Atara, but it’s an import from Seesai. Well known for their herbs.”
They nodded. “He’s got good taste.”
“He mostly bought it for the sake of a joke, so that’s questionable,” Qi snorted. “Though I suppose I have to retract my previous evaluation of uselessness. Next time I write to him, I’ll have to thank him properly.”
“And admit that there’s more to tea than caffeine.”
“Indeed. What a miscalculation on my part. Perhaps it would do me some good to try some other kinds of tea sometimes… When I’m not in need of a significant caffeine dose, of course.”
The builder smiled. “Save me a cup if you find any good ones.”
“Well, with this thermos, I suppose that makes it easy.”
“And the tiny table.”
“Yes, of course, and the tiny table,” Qi sighed.
The builder let out a short laugh. “You can keep it, by the way.”
“Oh? Why me? You made this.”
“I made it for you. You’ve got the tea. Best leave it with you so you can just bring it out whenever you feel like having some.”
“Ah. That is logical. Thank you, then.”
“‘Course.” The builder took one last sip and set their empty cup back down on the table. “Well, I gotta go to bed now,” they said, stretching their arms over their head. “Thanks again. This was nice.”
Qi felt a light upwards tug on his lips. Normally, he would have suppressed it, but just this once, he let it go. “I agree. I’ll be sure to bring more tea every so often.” The builder smiled and nodded.
Qi gathered up the thermos, cups, and table, and the two of them left the roof, waving goodnight as they reached the bottom and headed their separate ways.
Qi headed inside, blinking rapidly to adjust to the fluorescent lights of the lab. He rinsed the dishes off in the kitchen sink and put them away.
He knelt down to set the tiny table down on the floor near his dining table, leaning it against the cabinet holding all his tea-related things. He stared at it for a moment instead of getting up and ready for bed, his mind wandering.
First the food, then the thermos, and now this. All things of relatively negligible physical value, but still requiring a significant investment of time to make. All things the builder was willing to do for him without hesitation or even much reward.
What was it that they told him last week?
It feels nice to know that you’re thinking of me.
“…I could say the same to you,” Qi murmured to the walls of his empty home.
He stood up before his mind could catch up with what he said, and headed to his room to get ready for bed.
Even after he brushed his teeth and buried himself under his blankets, Qi swore that he could still feel the warm and tingly sensation of the mint tea running down his throat.
------------
A/N: Herbal teas aren't technically tea in the strictest sense, since they don't actually use tea leaves (Camellia sinensis). It's more a catch-all term for any non-caffeinated drink made by soaking anything plant-based (herbs, spices, fruit, etc) in water. I thought about writing a segment where the builder and Qi argue about the semantics of tea (the drink) vs. tea (the plant), but couldn't really figure out a way to make it work. Maybe a future silli oneshot.

Modernity doesn't need to have a singular definition.
Early modern warfare is connected to the European and Islamic World's of gunpowder for military purposes, while Modern Wars are thought to have originated with the artillery used in the Crimean War (1853-56) and more broadly the wars of the 1800s (using trains, metal ships and aircraft for war). World War I is when supply chains became global, so that too marked a major shift in how wars are fought or how the world works.
But modernity isn't defined by wars (any more than postmodernism is defined by architecture). Calling something a "modern war" is just a way of saying "a new way of doing war, sufficiently different from traditional or ancient wars that all of military theory has to be rewritten". So "modern war" uses the word "modern" differently than "Modernity". So I think it's fair to say that people who say "Modernity began in WWI or WWII" are not using a very useful definition of Modernity.
Having read Bruno Latour's "We Have Never Been Modern", Latour is concerned with how the West conceives of itself as being rational and empirically guided and not prone to superstitions and (to my mind) convincingly undermines this argument by taking a close look at European history. For Latour, the birth of empiricism originates with the creation of the vacuum pump. Robert Boyle, the rival of much more famous Francis Bacon, thus becomes the father of empiricism, because his vacuum pump was independently verified by trusted and respectable witnesses who could vouch that vacuum pumps worked. Peer review and a new way of doing science was born. But this doesn't really tell us anything about modernity either.
My pet historical definition is that society began becoming modern when its intellectuals began thinking in progress-oriented ways. 1465 is the first known historic document that refers to events taking place in the past as being "Middle Ages". Thus the historian in 1465 must of conceived of the present age as a new age and in this sense a modern age.
But a lot of modernization seems to be the result of the bourgeoisie (which emerged in the European cities of the 1100s) and the Protestant work ethic. The rise of the bourgeoisie caused the establishment of banks and later the abolition of the monarchies. Instead of monarchs (who worked with guilds to stifle new technologies seen as dangerous to people's jobs and the greater good) we saw the rise of democratic states with liberal governments that carved out private property rights for businesses and removed the hard institutional barriers for innovations. This gave rise to the industrial revolution.
The "Leftist conservative" philosopher Peter Sloterdijk (he's a conservative who agrees with Marx's analysis of the economy but doesn't like Leftist ideas about socialism or communism...so really a conservative) argues in his book "Eurotaoismus" (Euro-Daoism) that the ultimate root of modernization are the medieval Christian monks who tried to meditate in order to constantly improve their relationship with god. And that this idea (of almost "levelling up" to become a better person) eventually morphed into the Protestant work ethic and then became capitalism.
So the honest answer is: does it matter? Do we have to say "Oh yeah, modernity began in 1465 with the invention of the word "Middle Ages" to describe the past"? Does that help anyone or anything?
It's a good idea to use words to describe changes and developments. It's a bad idea to use words with many meanings as though they must have a fixed meaning.

Maximizing Efficiency with Roots Blowers
In the cement industry, selecting the appropriate blower, such as Roots blowers, is crucial for production efficiency. Recently, Darko gained valuable experience while working with clients that we would like to share.
Wide range of uses of Roots Blowers
A Roots blower operates as a positive displacement rotary blower, utilizing two rotor-shaped blades to compress and transport gas through relative motion within a cylinder. This design features a simple structure, which facilitates easy manufacturing. Consequently, it is well-suited for gas conveying and pressurization in low-pressure applications. Additionally, it can effectively function as a vacuum pump.
Roots blowers are widely used in various fields due to their stable performance. They find applications in wastewater treatment, water supply, pharmaceutical and chemical industries, flue gas, dust handling, and aquaculture. Furthermore, they are involved in cement transport and desulfurization and dust removal industries, serving essential functions such as gas conveying, pressurization, and ventilation.
Background
Not long ago, a northern cement plant ordered our composite mixer and requested to pair it with a vortex blower. Previously, our composite mixers and air-chain conveyors were typically equipped with Roots blowers, so we were not very familiar with the technical parameters and performance of the vortex blower.
At the same time, a southern cement company reported that when using our FUK800×60 meter air-chain conveyor, the throughput reached 410-420 t/h, but dust began to spill, failing to meet the designed capacity of 650 t/h. This prompted us to quickly visit the site to resolve the issue.
On-Site Investigation and Analysis
Technical Parameter Review
Our technical team arrived at the site. We reviewed the installation and technical parameters of the equipment. We found that all agreed-upon indicators were met. However, the blower in use was not the Roots blower we provided. Instead, it was a vortex blower purchased by the client.
Testing Issues
During the testing process, the throughput remained stuck between 410-420 t/h, accompanied by dusting issues. After careful observation, technicians noticed that opening a viewing port about ten meters from the discharge increased the material level, allowing throughput to rise to 500 t/h. However, dusting issues reappeared under full load, creating concern.
Response Strategy
Blower Replacement
We learned that another nearby company could meet their design requirements with a different blower. Therefore, we decided to take a dual approach:
Replace the blower with a Roots model that closely matched the technical parameters.
Continue to explore the performance of the vortex blower.
Adjusting Variable Frequency Motor Settings
We adjusted the vortex blower. We discovered it used a variable frequency motor. The technical parameters showed that pressure and airflow varied at 50HZ and 60HZ. Therefore, we decided to increase the motor frequency to 60HZ for testing. This change allowed the throughput to easily exceed 500 t/h. Eventually, it reached 680 t/h during adjustments.
Blower Comparison Analysis
Roots Blower vs. Vortex Blower
Through this experience, we conducted a comparative analysis of the two blowers:
Roots Blower: Offers stable pressure and airflow, with a power rating of 15 kW, making it suitable for applications with high pressure requirements.
Vortex Blower: Pressure and airflow vary with different frequencies, with a power rating of around 20 kW. It can be used in various applications but may not be as stable as Roots blowers in certain conditions.
Conclusion and Recommendations
Based on our practical experience, the Roots blower shows better technical performance and energy efficiency. This makes it a better fit for Darko's composite mixers and air-chain conveyors. The vortex blower can serve as a replacement in some situations. However, the Roots blower is preferable when high pressure stability is needed.
If you have any questions about blower selection or would like to learn more about our products, please feel free to contact us at Darko. Together, we can explore ways to improve production efficiency in the cement industry!

How Unani Medicine and Cupping Therapy Offer Natural Relief in Mumbai: The Role of Leech Therapy
Tumblr media
In the fast-paced, modern world, many people are turning to alternative healing practices for natural relief from ailments that traditional medicine sometimes struggles to treat. Unani medicine, along with therapies like cupping and leech therapy, is gaining popularity as a holistic approach to health and wellness. In Mumbai, a city known for its blend of ancient traditions and modern lifestyles, these therapies offer a promising solution for individuals seeking natural healing. From chronic pain relief to detoxification, Unani medicine and therapies such as cupping and leech therapy are becoming increasingly sought after.
Unani Medicine: A Holistic Approach to Healing
Unani medicine is a centuries-old healing system that originated in Greece and was later refined by Islamic scholars. The system focuses on the balance of the four humors—blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile—and aims to restore harmony in the body through natural remedies. Unani practitioners believe that when the humors are out of balance, illness and disease can occur. By addressing these imbalances, Unani medicine seeks to promote overall health and well-being.
Unani treatments are tailored to the individual, taking into account their unique constitution, lifestyle, and environmental factors. The system uses a combination of herbal medicines, dietary changes, physical therapies, and practices like cupping therapy and leech therapy to treat a wide range of conditions. One of the key benefits of Unani medicine is its focus on using natural ingredients and holistic treatments, which can have fewer side effects compared to pharmaceutical drugs.
In Mumbai, where urban living and stress can take a toll on people’s health, Unani medicine offers a natural and personalized approach to healing. Whether you're dealing with chronic illnesses, digestive issues, respiratory problems, or stress, Unani medicine provides a comprehensive solution that addresses both the symptoms and the root causes of health problems.
Cupping Therapy in Mumbai: A Time-Honored Tradition
Cupping therapy is a traditional healing practice that has been used for thousands of years in various cultures, including Chinese, Middle Eastern, and Unani traditions. It involves placing cups on the skin to create suction, which can help relieve muscle tension, improve blood circulation, and promote detoxification. There are different types of cupping, including dry cupping, wet cupping (hijama), and fire cupping, each of which has its unique benefits.
In Mumbai, cupping therapy has become a popular alternative treatment for individuals suffering from conditions such as back pain, joint pain, headaches, and even anxiety. The process of cupping involves creating a vacuum within the cups by either heating them or using a pump. The cups are placed on specific areas of the body, and the suction lifts the skin and underlying tissues, stimulating blood flow and promoting healing. This process helps to release toxins, improve circulation, and relieve tension in the muscles.
Cupping therapy in Mumbai is often used in conjunction with other holistic treatments, including Unani medicine, for a more comprehensive approach to health. Many practitioners in Mumbai combine cupping with herbal remedies and dietary adjustments to enhance the therapeutic effects. Whether you're dealing with pain management, stress relief, or detoxification, cupping therapy in Mumbai offers a non-invasive, natural solution that can complement other forms of treatment.
The Role of Leech Therapy in Natural Healing
Leech therapy, also known as hirudotherapy, is an ancient treatment that involves using medicinal leeches to promote healing. This therapy is particularly effective for conditions related to poor circulation, inflammation, and joint pain. During the therapy, leeches are applied to specific areas of the body, where they attach and begin feeding on blood. The saliva of the leech contains anticoagulants like hirudin, which help to improve circulation, reduce swelling, and promote tissue regeneration.
Leech therapy is particularly beneficial for individuals with conditions such as varicose veins, arthritis, and chronic pain. The therapy works by stimulating blood flow to the affected area, promoting the healing of tissues and reducing pain and inflammation. Leech therapy Mumbai is gaining recognition as an effective treatment for various conditions, particularly for those seeking natural and alternative remedies.
What sets leech therapy apart from other treatments is its ability to target specific areas of the body that may be suffering from poor circulation or stagnant blood flow. It works in a similar way to cupping therapy, but with the added benefit of the medicinal properties in the leech’s saliva, which can help accelerate healing. Leech therapy is a safe, non-invasive treatment when performed by trained practitioners, and it can offer significant relief for those with chronic conditions.
Hijama Therapy: A Vital Component of Cupping in Mumbai
Hijama therapy, or wet cupping, is a specialized form of cupping therapy that involves making small incisions in the skin before applying the cups. This method allows the cups to draw out not only stagnant blood but also toxins and impurities from the body. Hijama therapy is often used for individuals dealing with chronic pain, inflammation, and metabolic imbalances.
In Mumbai, hijama therapy is becoming increasingly popular due to its ability to provide immediate relief from conditions such as back pain, joint pain, and migraines. The therapy is particularly effective for those seeking to detoxify their bodies and improve circulation. The process is done under strict hygienic conditions to ensure safety and minimize the risk of infection.
The benefits of hijama therapy price in Mumbai extend beyond pain relief; it also helps to reduce stress, boost energy levels, and improve overall wellness. Many practitioners in Mumbai offer hijama therapy in combination with other treatments, such as Unani medicine and leech therapy, for a comprehensive approach to health.
Finding the Best Cupping and Leech Therapy in Mumbai
If you're looking for the best cupping therapy in Mumbai and leech therapy in Mumbai, it’s important to seek out a clinic with experienced practitioners who are well-versed in these traditional healing methods. Many clinics offer these therapies as part of a holistic treatment plan that includes Unani medicine, dietary guidance, and other natural healing practices.
When considering hijama therapy or cupping therapy in Mumbai, it’s essential to choose a clinic that adheres to the highest standards of hygiene and patient safety. Practitioners should be trained and knowledgeable in the proper techniques to ensure effective results. Always consult with a professional to determine which therapy is best suited for your health needs.
Unani medicine, cupping therapy, and leech therapy offer natural and effective solutions for a wide range of health concerns. In Mumbai, these therapies are becoming increasingly popular as people seek alternatives to conventional medicine. Whether you're suffering from chronic pain, stress, or digestive issues, these therapies offer a holistic approach to healing that can restore balance and promote overall wellness. By combining Unani medicine with cupping and leech therapy, you can experience the benefits of ancient healing practices in the modern world.
