Death has become a familiar face by now, a passenger not making too much noise, just tagging along, unbidden but impossible to ignore. Like one of those aging signs make-up can't fully cover and plastic surgery would only transform into something utterly strange. Once he's showered and half-dressed, Zichen allows himself to check his phone, trying not to be disappointed at the blank screen. No missed calls, no messages. That doesn't mean Xue Yang is dead.

The mind is a treacherous thing and sometimes it doesn't matter how much you remind yourself that being able to stop shutting painful memories in their tracks and accept them is supposed to be good for you. It feels anything but good, falling down this pit of anger, resentment and hurt, gods, so much of this hurts. These quiet moments, when he thinks he's almost made it through the day, are the worst, because it's like a betrayal, this shitload of everything painful, unsorted and wild, crashing down on him.

"Are you just gonna stand there with that boner or do something about it, big guy?" He can think of a number of ways Zichen could take this teasing, all of them at least somewhat violent. Problem is, he can't read the dull moron's brain and instead of being slammed up against the wall or dragged by his hair to the couch, Xue Yang's roomate goes straight to the brush, plucking it out of his hand and starts combing through his hair.

A heart beating under a couple of layers with meat, skin and fabrics. A gift more precious than the idiot in question can even imagine as he wets Zichen's sleeves with tears so fucking common they barely notice them anymore. It comes at any time, with unpredictable frequency. Xue Yang's realisation Wen Ning is never coming back, hitting him right in the face as was it the first time and Zichen has started to figure out, this reoccurring crying has to do with a lot more than Wen Ning.
