Most Memorable Rooftop Scenes In Movies

On movies set in a city with a picturesque skyline, it makes sense for filmmakers to show the beautiful overlooking view.  For these scenes, there are several spots that locations scouts can consider.  A tall tower near the outskirts of the city or a small hill would do.  If these locations are unavailable or are hard to shoot from, the best recourse is to find rooftops that would look great as filming locations and choose the best one before shooting.  These scenes have been done over and over in the history of filmmaking. You can also find such locations on location listing websites such as lightsonlocation.com. To give you an example, let's check out some of the more memorable movies and the locations where they were shot.

1.      In the 1984 movie Ghostbusters, the climax of the movie was shot on the rooftop of "The Shandor" which was actually 55 Central Park West, a housing cooperative in Manhattan, New York City.  Because of the popularity of the said movie, the said building is now referred to as the Ghostbusters Building.  Such can be the effect of popular movies on filming locations.

2.      In the 2009 comedy film The Hangover, the rooftop of Caesars Palace in Las Vegas was used to film the part where the main characters had a toast to start their celebration.

3.      Another memorable rooftop scene was in the movie The Devil's Advocate which starred young Keanu Reeves and the legendary Al Pacino. The scene where Al Pacino offered Keanu a job was shot on top of the Continental Tower.  The water garden though is the result of post-production magic.

4.      In Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, Forrest Whitaker played the role of a hitman who follows the code of the samurai.  One of the more memorable scenes in this positively reviewed film featured Whitaker wielding a sword on a rooftop.

 The passage of time changes a city's skyline dramatically.  The presence of these rooftop scenes would therefore preserve the past look of the city and to some romantics, that's just awesome.   Not only that, scenes capturing a city's skyline and preserving them for as long as possible could be used in the future for historical purposes, just like how people of today get a glimpse of yesteryears through old movies and their use of filming locations outside the studio.
