Lightning Strikes on Residential Roofs – Causes, Damage, and Prevention
Avoid costly structural damage and destructive power surges when lightning strikes your home. Understanding the power lightning carries and how to divert it will help prevent catastrophic lightning damage to your home.
New Image Roofing Atlanta gathered crucial information about how lightning strikes affect a home’s electrical systems, appliances, and structural integrity and what you can do to mitigate them.
How Lightning Forms
Lightning forms during thunderstorms resulting from imbalances between positive and negative charges in the atmosphere. Ice crystals and water droplets collide in a storm, creating an electrical charge buildup. A cloud’s upper portion typically holds positive charges, while the lower section becomes negatively charged.
When this imbalance grows large enough, nature corrects it by discharging electricity as a lightning strike. The bolt either moves within the cloud, between clouds, or between the cloud and the ground. A lightning strike to the ground occurs when the negative charge at the cloud’s bottom seeks to connect with positive charges on the Earth’s surface.
What Attracts Lightning?
Lightning seeks the least resistant path to connect to the ground. This often means it targets tall or conductive objects. Here are some common attractors:
Tall Objects – Lightning frequently strikes the highest point in an area, like trees, utility poles, or a home’s roof.
Conductive Materials – Lightning is attracted to conductive materials like metals. Roofs with metal flashing or metal objects mounted on them (like satellite dishes, antennas, or chimneys) may become targets for lightning.
Water and Wet Surfaces – Water is an excellent electricity conductor. If a roof is wet, it can enhance conductivity, making it more attractive to lightning.
Note: Lightning doesn’t need to hit the exact rooftop to cause damage. Even nearby strikes can result in electrical surges and fires within your home.
Energy in a Lightning Strike
Lightning is powerful. The average lightning bolt can contain up to 1 billion electrical volts with temperatures exceeding 50,000°F (five times hotter than the sun’s surface). The energy released by a lightning strike can be up to 300 kilowatt-hours in a fraction of a second. This immense energy release can damage everything, including electronics, electrical wiring, and a home’s structural integrity.
Potential Damage to a Home’s Structure and Electronics
A direct lightning strike to a residential roof can cause various damages, including:
Fire Damage – The intense heat from a lightning strike can ignite combustible materials like wood and shingles on a home’s roof. Even metal roofs are not immune to fire risks since the heat can reach high enough temperatures to cause surrounding materials to catch fire.
Roof Damage – A lightning strike’s force can shatter roof tiles, damage shingles, or puncture holes in the roof. This leaves the home vulnerable to further damage from rainwater entering the structure.
Electrical Damage – Power surges are among the most common lightning results. When lightning strikes a home or nearby power lines, the surge can travel through electrical wiring, destroying appliances and electronics. Devices like televisions, computers, and HVAC systems are particularly vulnerable.
Plumbing Damage – If your home has metal plumbing, lightning can travel through it, leading to ruptures, leaks, or electrocution hazards.
Structural Damage – A lightning strike’s force can cause cracks in walls, damage to chimneys, and even foundation movement in extreme cases.
Who to Call After a Lightning Strike
If your home is struck by lightning, you should immediately ensure your family’s and your property’s safety. Here’s who to contact:
Emergency Services – If you notice fire, smoke, or gas leak indications after a lightning strike, call 911 immediately. Lightning-induced fires can spread quickly, and first responders can prevent an issue from becoming catastrophic.
Electrician – Even if there are no immediate damage signs, have an electrician inspect your home’s electrical system. A surge from a lightning strike can cause hidden damage to your wiring, outlets, and appliances that may lead to future problems or fire risks.
Roofer – A licensed professional roofing contractor should inspect your roof for any damage caused by the strike. Even small punctures or cracks in the shingles can lead to leaks and water damage over time.
Plumber – If your home has metal plumbing, a plumber should inspect your pipes for damages. Lightning can cause holes in pipes or weaken them, leading to potential leaks or bursts later on.
Insurance Company – Lightning strikes are usually covered by homeowner’s insurance policies. Contact your insurance provider as soon as possible to report the damage and start the claims process. Be sure to document all visible damage and keep any receipts for emergency repairs.

Preventing and Diverting Lightning Strikes
While you can’t stop a lightning strike from happening, there are several steps you can take to minimize damage risks to your home:
Install a Lightning Protection System – A lightning rod system is designed to direct a lightning strike’s energy safely into the ground, preventing damage to your home. The system typically includes rods, conductors, and ground rods that create a low-resistance path for the electricity to follow.
Surge Protectors – Install whole-home surge protectors to help guard against power surges from lightning. These devices are connected to your home’s main electrical panel, preventing excess electricity from reaching your outlets and appliances.
Unplug Electronics – During a storm, it’s best to unplug sensitive electronics like televisions, computers, and kitchen appliances. While surge protectors help, unplugging devices offers maximum protection from surges.
Tree Trimming – Trees near your home can become targets for lightning. Keep them trimmed and ensure that large limbs are not hanging over your roof. If lightning strikes a tree, falling or ejected branches can cause significant damage to your roof.
Use Non-Combustible Roofing Materials – If you live in an area prone to lightning, consider using fire-resistant roofing materials like metal or tile. These materials are less likely to ignite compared to traditional asphalt shingles.
Read more about lightning strike prevention HERE.
Lightning and Residential Structures
In this article, you discovered how lightning strikes affect residential structures, the damage they cause, how to divert them, and what to do after one.
Knowing how to divert or prevent residential lightning strikes can help avoid costly structural and electrical damage.
Ignoring the need for lightning protection systems and using non-conductive material in your home’s construction can lead to catastrophic damage to your structure and electronic systems/equipment, resulting in an uninhabitable residence.

AVIAN READER: STEAMPUNK BIRDHOUSE (revised post tenants, 2023)
wood, copper, brass, bronze, steel, glass, plastic, found objects, limestone, wren’s egg - 11"x 9¾"x 10¼"
This piece been outside my studio for several years, and a couple of years ago was used by a pair of Carolina Wrens which come every year and have nested in my ladder hanging on the outside of the studio several times. I could not use the ladder for several years each Spring, so I had decided to make a couple of wren-sized birdhouses which I placed near the studio so they would have another housing option other than my ladder. The birdhouse roof was damaged after a fallen tree limb fell on it knocking it onto the ground. I repaired the birdhouse roof (see the copper ‘stitched’ detail image above). After the repair the birdhouse was used by wrens a couple of years ago, and — as I have an offer to purchase this piece — I finally took it down and opened it up so I could clean it out for the new (human) owner. I discovered an intact unhatched egg in the nest. I carefully removed the nest and the egg and cleaned the house out, making a new base for displaying the house the new home (a log cabin in the mountains of North Georgia). The wren’s egg became a part of the new sculpture, resting atop the bookshelf inside. The new owner will have the nest which I saved. All the books on the shelf represent significant books on my bookshelves, though they are not accurate facsimiles . . .

RV Maintenance Tips for Traveling Through Crawfordville, Georgia
Traveling through Georgia, especially near areas like Crawfordville, offers picturesque views, tranquil surroundings, and the ultimate escape into nature. As you journey, it’s crucial to ensure your RV is in tip-top shape. Whether you’re staying at Sunrise River RV Park or passing through RV parks near Augusta, GA, maintaining your RV is vital to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip. Below are some essential RV maintenance tips to keep in mind as you explore this beautiful region.
1. Regular Tire Inspections
One of the most critical aspects of RV maintenance is tire care. Before heading to any RV park near Augusta, GA, check your tires for proper inflation, wear, and tear. The varied terrain in Georgia, from highways to forest trails, can strain your tires. Ensure they are inflated to the manufacturer's recommended pressure. Also, inspect the treads for any signs of excessive wear, and replace tires if necessary. A blowout on the road can be dangerous and inconvenient, so this simple check can save you a lot of trouble.
2. Check and Maintain Brakes
Given the hilly landscapes around Crawfordville, ensuring your brakes are in excellent condition is essential. Regularly check the brake pads, rotors, and fluid levels. If you notice any squeaking, grinding, or decreased braking efficiency, get them serviced immediately. The peace of mind knowing your brakes are functioning correctly will make your travel through Georgia’s scenic routes much safer.
3. Inspect Roof Seals and Vents
Georgia’s climate can be unpredictable, with sudden rain showers even in sunny conditions. To avoid leaks and water damage, inspect the seals around your RV's roof, windows, and vents. Look for any cracks or deteriorated seals, and reapply sealant if necessary. This small step can prevent costly repairs later, especially if you're planning to stay at Sunrise River RV Park, where the natural surroundings are best enjoyed dry and leak-free!
4. Keep the Electrical System in Check
Your RV’s electrical system is its lifeline, powering everything from the refrigerator to the air conditioning. Before you park at any RV park near Augusta, GA, inspect your batteries, wires, and connections. Make sure your batteries are fully charged and in good condition. Test your generator to ensure it’s functioning properly, especially if you plan to camp in more remote areas like Crawfordville. Keeping a multimeter handy can help you diagnose any electrical issues that may arise on the road.
5. Monitor Your Water System
Georgia’s humidity and temperatures can lead to unique challenges for your RV’s water system. Regularly check your freshwater, gray, and black water tanks for leaks or signs of wear. Ensure that the hoses are in good condition and securely connected. If you plan on staying at Sunrise River RV Park, you’ll appreciate having a fully functional water system for showers and kitchen use. Additionally, consider investing in a water pressure regulator to prevent high-pressure water at certain campsites from damaging your RV’s plumbing.
6. Keep Your HVAC System Clean
The summer heat in Georgia can be intense, making your RV’s HVAC system essential for comfort. Clean the filters regularly and ensure that the air conditioning unit is functioning properly. If you're visiting Crawfordville during the warmer months, you’ll want to stay cool and comfortable after a day of exploring. Routine maintenance of your HVAC system will keep you and your family comfortable throughout your journey.
7. Stock Up on Essential Supplies
Crawfordville offers natural beauty and serenity, but it’s also essential to be prepared for any situation. Ensure you have a well-stocked toolkit that includes wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, and any other tools specific to your RV model. Carry spare fuses, bulbs, and essential fluids like oil, coolant, and windshield washer fluid. Being prepared will ensure that minor issues don’t escalate into significant problems, allowing you to enjoy your stay at any RV park near Augusta, GA, or beyond.
8. Plan for Waste Disposal
Responsible waste management is vital for the environment and the longevity of your RV’s sanitation system. Before arriving at Sunrise River RV Park, familiarize yourself with the park's waste disposal facilities. Ensure that your black and gray water tanks are emptied and clean. Carry appropriate chemicals to treat your tanks, reducing odors and buildup. Keeping your waste management system in top shape ensures a pleasant experience for you and your fellow campers.
9. Check Your Propane System
Propane is essential for cooking, heating, and refrigeration in many RVs. Before embarking on your journey through Georgia, inspect your propane tanks and lines for leaks. Make sure your tanks are securely mounted and that your regulator is functioning correctly. It’s also wise to keep a carbon monoxide detector in your RV for safety. Regularly inspecting your propane system will allow you to enjoy meals and hot showers without worry during your stay.
10. Protect Against Pests
Crawfordville, with its lush landscapes and natural beauty, can also be a haven for insects and small animals. To protect your RV from unwanted guests, seal any gaps or cracks where pests might enter. Regularly clean your RV’s interior, removing food crumbs and trash that could attract pests. If you’re staying at Sunrise River RV Park, you’ll want to focus on the natural beauty of the area, not on dealing with ants or mice inside your RV!
11. Keep Your RV Clean
Traveling through Georgia can expose your RV to dust, dirt, and debris. Regularly wash your RV to maintain its appearance and protect its exterior from damage. Pay special attention to the undercarriage, especially after traveling on dirt roads or through muddy areas. Cleaning your RV not only keeps it looking good but also helps prevent rust and corrosion, ensuring it stays in excellent condition for years to come.
12. Stay Informed About Local Road Conditions
As you travel through Georgia, staying informed about local road conditions can help you avoid unexpected delays or hazards. Check weather forecasts and road reports, especially during the rainy season, when roads can become slick or flooded. Knowing the conditions ahead of time allows you to plan your route and adjust your driving to ensure a safe journey to Sunrise River RV Park or any other destination in the area.
Conclusion
Maintaining your RV is essential to ensure a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable journey through Crawfordville and the surrounding areas of Georgia. Whether you’re heading to Sunrise River RV Park or exploring RV parks near Augusta, GA, following these maintenance tips will keep your RV in top condition, allowing you to focus on the adventure ahead.
From regular tire checks to ensuring your water and electrical systems are functioning properly, taking the time to maintain your RV will enhance your travel experience. By being proactive with your maintenance routine, you can enjoy the natural beauty and serene landscapes of Crawfordville, Georgia, without worry. Safe travels!

Why Timely Roof Repair Matters
Your roof is the first line of defense against the elements. Even small issues, like a missing shingle or a minor leak, can quickly escalate into significant problems if left unaddressed. Timely roof repair is crucial to prevent:
Water Damage: A damaged roof can allow water to seep into your home, leading to structural issues, mold growth, and even costly interior repairs.
Energy Loss: Damaged roofs with gaps or missing shingles let warm or cool air escape, making your HVAC system work harder. This raises energy bills and reduces your home’s energy efficiency.
Reduced Curb Appeal and Property Value: Visible roof damage impacts your home's appearance and can lower its market value, especially if you plan to sell.
Common Roof Repair Needs in Georgia

Leak Repair: Leaks can occur around skylights, chimneys, or vent pipes. Our team can quickly locate and seal leaks to prevent water intrusion and further damage.
Storm Damage Repair: Hailstorms and high winds are common in Georgia, and these storms can leave roofs with dents, broken shingles, or punctures. We assess and repair all types of storm damage to keep your home safe.
Flashing Repair: Flashing around chimneys and roof edges can deteriorate over time. We repair or replace damaged flashing to prevent leaks and maintain a waterproof seal.

Low-Slope Roofing Systems in Hot Summers - When to Call Your Roofer
Prevent sweltering summer heat from damaging your low-slope (flat) roofing system. Understanding how summer heat adversely affects low-slope roofing will help you take steps to prevent cracking, peeling, leaks, and structural water damage.
New Image Roofing Atlanta gathered information about how extreme summer temperatures can damage your low-slope roofing system and what you can do to protect and preserve it.
Low-Slope Roofing System Vulnerabilities in Hot Summers
Low-slope roofing systems (TPO, EPDM, PVC, BUR, Duro Last) are inherently more vulnerable to issues during hot summers. The intense heat, prolonged exposure to UV radiation, and thermal expansion and contraction can contribute to multiple challenges, including the following:
1. Thermal Expansion and Contraction – High temperatures can cause roofing materials to expand, and during the cooler evenings, they contract. This constant thermal cycling can lead to stress on the roofing materials, potentially resulting in cracking, warping, and other structural issues.
2. UV Radiation Damage – Prolonged exposure to the sun’s UV radiation can accelerate the aging of roofing materials. UV rays can cause shingles, membranes, and other components to deteriorate, lose flexibility, and become more susceptible to damage.
3. Heat Absorption – Low-slope roofs, especially those with dark-colored surfaces, can absorb and retain heat. Excessive heat absorption can lead to elevated indoor temperatures, increased energy costs, and potential damage to roofing materials over time.
4. Membrane Degradation – Membrane roofing systems, commonly used in low-slope roofs, may experience degradation due to high temperatures. This can result in reduced waterproofing effectiveness and an increased risk of leaks.
5. Flashing and Sealant Issues – Extreme heat can cause flashing and sealants to soften and lose their effectiveness. This compromises the waterproofing capabilities of the roof, leading to potential leaks and water infiltration.
Tip: A roof maintenance program with annual inspections allows for early issue detection and repair.
Low-Slope Roofing System Protection in Hot Summers
Protecting low-slope roofing systems in hot summers requires a proactive approach. By understanding your roof’s vulnerabilities and implementing preventive measures, you can safeguard your property from potential severe damage. Consider the following measures:
1. Reflective Roofing Materials – Choose reflective roofing materials with a high solar reflectance index (SRI). Light-colored or reflective surfaces can help minimize heat absorption, reducing the impact of high temperatures on the roof.
2. Cool Roof Coatings – Apply cool roof coatings to existing low-slope roofing systems. These coatings have reflective properties that can deflect sunlight and reduce heat absorption. Cool roof coatings also provide additional protection against UV radiation.
3. Proper Insulation – Adequate insulation beneath the roof can help regulate indoor temperatures and reduce heat transfer to the building’s interior. Proper insulation contributes to energy efficiency and minimizes the strain on cooling systems.
4. Enhanced Ventilation – Improve roof ventilation to facilitate air circulation and reduce heat buildup. Adequate ventilation helps dissipate trapped heat and minimizes the risk of thermal stress on roofing materials.
5. Regular Roof Inspections – Schedule regular inspections to identify and address potential issues before they escalate. Look for signs of wear, damage, or deterioration in roofing materials, flashings, and sealants.
6. Shade Structures – Consider installing shade structures, like awnings or pergolas, to shield your low-slope roof from direct sunlight. These structures relieve extreme heat and offer additional protection against UV radiation.
7. Roof Coatings for Membranes – For membrane roofing systems, apply coatings designed to protect against UV radiation and enhance durability. These coatings create a barrier that shields the membrane from the harmful effects of the sun.
8. Solar Reflective Shingles – If your low-slope roof is shingled, opt for solar reflective shingles with reflective granules. These shingles are designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat, helping to maintain a cool roof.
Tip: Severe summer storms can cause extreme temperature fluctuations. When such a storm passes, schedule a roof inspection to identify and repair any damages.
When to Call Your Roofer
1. Visible Signs of Damage – If you notice visible signs of damage like cracked or warped shingles, blistering membranes, or deteriorating flashings, it’s time to call your roofer. Prompt attention to visible damage can prevent further issues.
2. Leakage and Water Infiltration – Water leaks inside the building during hot weather are urgent issues that require immediate attention. If you observe water stains on ceilings or walls, contact your roofer promptly to identify and address the source of the leaks.
3. Flashing and Sealant Concerns – If you have concerns about the condition of flashings and sealants on your low-slope roof, consult with your roofer. These components are critical in maintaining a watertight seal, and any issues should be addressed promptly.
4. Structural Integrity Issues – Call your roofer when you suspect structural integrity issues (sagging, bowing, or ponding). Structural concerns pose significant risks and should be addressed promptly to prevent further damage.
5. Regular Maintenance and Repairs – Schedule regular maintenance with your roofer, especially after periods of extreme weather. Professionals can identify potential issues early on and recommend preventive measures to protect your low-slope roof.

Heat Stress on Low-Slope Roofs
In this article, you discovered how low-slope roofs are vulnerable and can be damaged by brutal summer heat, measures to protect them, and when to call your roofer.
Understanding how low-slope roof membranes react to summer heat and extreme temperature variations allows you to install preventive measures to ensure your roof’s integrity.
Neglecting your low-slope roof through the summer months can lead to leaks and severe structural damage from cracks and fissures in your roof membrane.
