Feel My Heartbeat Pt. 7
Masterlist
In spending so much time with Neteyam Awke had neglected her training duties. It weighed on the back of her head - a nagging voice urging her to resume her duties. But, she had been completely overtaken by the joy and comfort she felt spending time with Neteyam. Awake wasn;t the only one falling behind on assigned task. There had been a few times when Kiri and Tuk were sent to retrieve Neteyam. If Toruk Makto had been scolding him for his lack of focus Neteyam kept it to himself.
Despite Awke's desire to indulge, their lack of awareness ultimately led to her current situation.
Awake kneeled on the woven flooring of the clan leader's mauri in a familiar position. Ronal stood glaring down at her, but this time she stood accompanied by Tonowari. Awake felt small under his glare. Tonowari was often too busy with Ol’eyktan duties to handle the rebellious behavior of his son and ward. But when he did, his scoldings burned hotter than Ronals glare. While Ronal was known for her harsh glares and tone, the disappointment that dripped off Tonowari stung like venom. As far as Awke can recall, she wanted to please him, show him that she was worthy of being Metkayina, and that they didn't make the mistake of taking her and Kahe to ward. She wanted to make him proud, she wanted him to be proud of her. Kahe never fell out of his good graces, but she has - Numerous times. A green monster festered in her heart. She and Kahe were fko kalxi - of one heart, so why were they so different?
At first, they were allowing her go spend time with Neteyam as she was making personal improvement - but now the boy showed to be nothing but a distraction.
“You have been neglectful in your duties Awke. I thought better of you.”
Her ear pressed closely to her head as Tonowari’s words tightened in her chest.
“I lost track of time. It won’t happen again.”
“Won’t happen again? This has been going on for weeks girl!” Ronal paced back and forth. Her legs are tight with anger. The orange light emitted from the fire pit cast a shadow on the Tsahik’s face - marking her features in harsh lines. “That Demon blood boy has been nothing but a distraction!”
“Until you have outgrown this lack of responsibility you are forbidden from seeing him again.” Panic settles in a deep pit in Awke’s stomach. The thought of being kept away from Neteyam was unbearable. Her eyes burned with unshed tears.
She shot up from her sitting position.
“ No, you can’t!” Awke stood up.
Ronal stepped closer to her, and hissed in warning. “We have missed judged you.”
Awke felt like crying, it burns. Why did she allow herself to grow so attached to that annoying forest boy? Since his arrival, he had done nothing but consume so much of her time and thoughts. He changed so much of her life. Rearranged so much of her thoughts and behaviors. He showed and made her feel things that she hadn’t even thought possible. He changed her.
“Kahe will progress but you will sit out another year. You are not ready for Ikinimaya.”
This had to be a sick prank. All her life all Awke wanted was to be about of something. All she wanted was to belong. Her differences set her apart from everyone. She stood out like a sore thump. Completing her trials would make her a true Metkayina. She would finally belong to something bigger than her life. Her life would finally have meaning. But here she was, having the one thing in life she desired being ripped away from her by the people she wanted to prove herself to the most.
“No! You can’t do this!”
“It is decided Awke.”
Ronal and Tonowari were all she had. The only parental figures that Kahe and her had after the passing of their grandmother. Awke can remember the day that Tsireya was born as if it were yesterday. Ronal held her daughter so tenderly. Ronal looked at her small bundle with so much warmth and love. An ugly green feeling grew in Awke’s heart that day. She wanted Ronal to look at her that way.
“Mother, Father please!”
All movement paused. The room grew silent.
Awke’s heart rocked so loudly in her chest that it feels as though it will burst.
Ronal and Tonowari look at her wide-eyed. Their silence stung. Of course, they would reject her. Why would they want an embarrassment of a Daughter like her?
Before anyone can open their mouths to speak and break her heart any further - Awke bolts out of the Mauri’s opening. Kahe calls at her from the distance. But Awke’s legs continue to carry her on autopilot to the one place she can be alone and far away from rejection.
—------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Awke retreated to her secret place within the jungle. The lively sounds of the roaming creatures did nothing to calm her as they once did. The previous encounter with everyone in the mauri continued to replay within her mind. The expressions of shock on everyone's faces. She felt weak. All her years of seeking a real family, real parents, came bubbling to the surface.
Everyone knew now. Everyone knew just how desperate and lonely she is on the inside now. Even Kahe stood surprised by her outburst. She had never told him about any of this before - afraid that he would ridicule her for wanting such a childish thing. It was ridiculous she knew that. It was ridiculous to think that Kahe would think of her that way, but there was a small voice in her head that would snare at her. Whispering lies. ‘Kahe hated that he had to take care of her.’ ‘She was only holding him back.’ ‘Tonowari and Ronal took her in only for the sake of duty.’
It was overwhelming. Somedays her mind felt like it would split. So she would run away and hide. Hide and hope that her thoughts would leave her in the passing wind, the call of the animals, and the racing tide.
A tig snapped by the entrance of her enclosure.
His blue hue and stride were not easy to misplace behind her cascading tears.
“What do you want Neteyam.” She hurriedly whipped at her wet cheeks, not wanting him to see her in such a vulnerable state. His eyes burn across her visible skin as he scans her over. She wants nothing more than for the ground to swallow her whole.
“Kahe told me to find you.”
‘Of course, he did.’ She wants to say but remained quiet to conceal the tremble of her lips. She hugs her knees to her chest, tucking her head between her knees. Her ears pressed tight to her head and her tail wrapped around her waist.
Neteyam slowly inches toward Awke as she sits in the center of the enclosure. Eclipse is nearing and the fire pit remains unlit. He decides to go there instead.
“Why did you run away?” His voice is soft. Not wanting to rush her he picks up the flint rocks and waited for her response.
She wants to lie and run away again. “They scolded me because I’ve been skipping out on training to be with you.” Why did she answer him?
Neteyam paused his striking. “I’m sorry, it's my fault for taking so much of your time.”
“No, it's not! It’s all my fault, it always is.” She stands up. Neteyam had lit the fire pit, casting everything in the clear with a warm orange glow. The colors dance off of his face. He looks so soft this way, so warm and comforting. Her feet beg her to go to him. She resisted. She paces around the mouth of the small cave.
Her words bubble out of her mouth without thought.
“I’m such a screw-up.” “I mess up everything I try to do and everyone I try to get close with.” “It's because of me that Kahe can’t have the family he wants.” “No one can love me!” Why is she saying all of this to him?
“Your brother loves you”
“Because He’s my brother! He doesn’t have much of a choice.” She scoffed.
“I love you”
There was a pregnant pause. Neteyams words stopped her in her tracks.
“What?” She had to have misheard him.
Neteyam slowly closed the distance between them. His steps were short and cautious as if she were a small animal, ready to jump away in freight. But his face was calm and his eyes soft and glowing.
“I said I love you Awke.”
Awke stared at him in disbelief. She shook her head as if trying to shake his words from her head. She must have been hearing him wrong.
“ You Can’t”
“But I do-“
“No, you don’t!” She shouts. Birds fly away from the jungle canopy. She resumes her pacing.
“I’m a mess up, a freak!” Her body buzzed with anxiety. "All I do is destroy and lash out!”
“That’s fine.” Neteyam’s voice stood calm against her racing thoughts.
“I get mad easily and take it out on everyone else”
“You do.”
She chuckled dryly. See he was finally seeing sense
“All I know how to do is fight and push everyone away.”
“And I still love you.”
Not an ounce of falsehood existed in Neteyams eyes. Not an inch of uncertainty in his steps as he made his way to Awke. Chest to chest. Gently he lifts her chin with his thumb and first finger.
“I see you Awke.”
Her once-racing thoughts quiet down to a shimmer. She thinks about everything that has happened. Her wanting to be accepted by Ronal and Tonowari. Wanting to be a good sister to Kahe. Her love for Tsrieya. Her rocky relationship with Aonung. And her new connection with Neteyam. Apart of her was relieved that he felt the same way. But, another part wants to keep them secret. She kept those feelings locked away afraid - of letting them free. She wants to deny him. She should deny him to keep herself safe.
“I’m so scared Neteyam.”
"Of what?"
"Of being alone."
"You're not alone. You just need to stop running away from everyone who cares for you." He grabs her hand and leads her out of the jungle.
"Where are you taking me?" She stumbles along the uneven path. Neteyam holds her close to steady her.
"Back to your Mother and Father."
Awke stands with Neteyam at the entrance of the Clan leader Mauri. Her body is buzzing with anxiety and her mind is overran with different scenarios on how this interaction with unfold. Neteyam gently pushes her in.
Having heard the movement from their entrance Ronal quickly shifts to meet Awke. There was no way that Ronal would not be angry at her for what she did hours prior.
So she tried to apologize. "Tsahik I'm sorry." But Ronal rushed toward her. Awke readied herself to be reprimanded and chastised but to her surprise, she is instead pulled into a tight embrace. Her head came to rest above Ronals heard. The harsh beat drums against her ears Ronal shushed her, she smoothingly rubs at her back and smoothed her ruffled hair down.
"You foolish child of mine! Don't run away from your mother like that." Ronal's words open the floodgates of Awke's eyes.
She longed for so long to be called her daughter. Awke wrapped her arms around Ronal’s middle. She started to blurt out apologies through her sobs.
"I'm sorry for not trying hard enough." "I'm sorry for causing so much trouble."
A larger hand rest on her back as her father joined them. His hand is warm against her back as he looks at her with a soft gaze. He brushed a stray braid behind her ear.
"There is nothing to apologize for Awke, it should be us apologizing to you." His hand cups her cheek, dwarfing her in its size. His embrace felt safe and grounding."We allowed these feelings to fester for far too long."
Ronal pulled way slightly. Awke wanted to dive back into her embrace Ronal grasps Awke’s hand within her own, placing it on her round stomach. "You and your brother are just as much our children as this babe growing within me." Awke finally takes notice of the tears cascading down her mother’s face.
"But I'm so different than you."
"You and your brother are our eldest! You are important to this family. Don't you ever forget that Awke!"
Tsireya who had remained at the other end of the room rushed forward to join the growing familial hug.
"You're my big sister Awke. I see you. We all see you. Aonung as well, although he has a hard time showing that." The two sisters laughed through their tears.
Kahe also joined, "This is our family Awke. This here is our home."
They press their heads together. Kahe and Neteyam were right. There was no need to run anymore. Everything she needed was right here all along within arms reach.
Neteyam having seen everything decides that it was time for him to depart. Has he turned to exit, Tonowari gave him a curt nod and a small appreciative smile.
It's been a hot minute. I can't promise a more frequent upload schedule but thank you to everyone that has stuck around for the ride.
Now that Awke has finally gotten her emotions in order, I'll love to see what personal development she has waiting for her. Babyboy Neteyam finally confessed his feelings but they aren't together yet as Awkw hasn't completed her trials and can't find a mate yet. And in all honesty, she was in a very vulnerable state so it would've been wrong for Neteyam to force a reply from her. The Tulkun are about to return so maybe an Awke confession is fast approaching???

Neglected sully (3)
avatar navi x reader
The forest had been your whole life it was where you had been born and took your first steps, it had made you happy and also broke your heart. It had become the place where it held all the people that you love so dearly, and who saw you for you. Sorrow had come from the place when you had been blamed for actions way out of you control, and later on banished from the place you call home. Still holding close the memories and some keepsakes from your old home and life. When there comes sorrow there also comes new beginning and you had stated your new beginning.
y/n" my eywa my great mother my guidance in the dark" Right now you are sitting in the home that you have made with kawwney. It had been nearly three half years since she was exiled and disowned. She had been able to make a new life here among the reef navi, yes it did take her time to adapt but she soon become one of the people.
y/n " thank you great mother for the blessing you gave me in life" you are singing your song chord. Life had changed so much for you since you had left home and become metkayian.
????? " ma y/n" you soon stooped singing and soon looked up to see your husband kawwney standing there.
y/n " hello my husband how was the talk with your father and mother"
Kawwney " it had went well my love I had been even asked by my father to join him, on scouting missions and I agree if that well with you"
y/n " that perfect with me ma kawwney it good you and your father, are helping and sharing the clan responsibilities"
kawwney " thank you yawntu" kawwney soon brought you into an warm embrace and kissed your forehead, making you smile and kiss him back as well.
kawwney " now tell me where are our wonderful children"
y/n " they are fast asleep my love"
kawwney " here I was hoping to have some time with them before I had to leave"
???? " baba"
y/n " well it seems like you get that wish answered my love" kawwney smile brightly and laughed, as she soon walked off into another room of the home.
y/n " do you need help in there"
kawwney " I'm good" kawwney soon came into the room carrying three navi children in his arms, all of them smiles brightly and happy.
y/n " they are growing up so fast ma kawwney"
kawwney " well they are ours in no time they will be walking around here and talking in compete sentences with us"
y/n " our perfect sons and beautiful daughter"
kawwney " yes our perfect children just like their mama and they will do amazing in the future" You had started a family with kawwney not that long ago and had triplets two boys and one girl, and triplets are rare among navi sending the clan into celebration due to the boys birth. They are named Kewia, Roili, and Aeyla names that you and kawwney had picked out for them.
warrior " kawwney and y/n hello I'm sorry for interrupting"
y/n " it okay has something happened"
warrior " yes tonowari has called us we will be leaving now for scouting and some other matters"
kawwney " tell my father I will be there shortly I need to put my children down"
warrior " yes I will make sure to tell him" the warrior soon left leaving the family of five in the home.
y/n " here let me take Ayela for you so you can put kewia and Roili down"
kawwney " thank you" ayela had soon went into your arms and smile, as you held her for a bit until you put her down on a mat, soon being joined by her brothers.
kawweny " I will be home in time for dinner so don't worry"
y/n " I always worry"
kawwney " I will be safe you had helped me learn more about these humans and their ways, take care of yourself and the children as well ... I know you will not be alone today as my mom and siblings will be here with the rest of the clan"
y/n " that what I love now go dont keep your father and other waiting any longer"
kawwney " yes my love" kawwney had grabbed his spear and soon kissed you and the kids goodbye before he took off and left. You had soon watch him leave until you could no longer see him, and you soon sat down with the children.
y/n " my children you will always be love by me and I will make sure the three of you are treated fairly and no ever feels alone, I will not become like them"
kids " mama" the children smile towards you making you smile at them, as you soon started looking at them as they play with their wooden toys and crawling around trying their best to walk.
tsireya " hello"
y/n " tisreya come in" tsireya soon smiled as she walked into the home, you and her become very close after the days of your arrival here. She had been happy to finally meet the girl her brother had been crushing on and telling her about as well.
tsireya " I came to check up on you and my nephews and niece how are they doing"
y/n " I'm guessing your brothers are not that far as well"
rotxo " good morning"
aonung " good morning y/n and little ones" the children started speaking in gibberish and laughing after seeing their uncles and aunt arrive in the home.
y/n " it good to have you kids here today but sadly you missed your brother as he went off with your father"
tsireya " oh we saw him when he was with our father and as we going to come see you anyways"
y/n " that sounds like your brother"
aonung " come here kawie lets do more with your walking I know you will be a mighty warrior like my brother" aonung soon reached out his hand and started helping his nephew walk a bit.
rotxo " come on roili we can't let them have all the fun" while the boys were doing some walking practice on the other side of the room, leaving you with ayela and tsireya.
y/n " these boys are so much like kawwney"
tsireya " do you mean the older boys are the babies"
y/n "both" you and Tsireya had laughed as the both of you are helping ayela with her walking.
later that afternoon
ronal " hello everyone"
aonung " mother"
ronal " hello I came to speak with y/n and see my grandchildren"
rotxo " yes mom but I thought you will be busy all day"
tsireya " yes with clan responsibilities"
ronal " well I got some time off and now I came to have some words with y/n"
tsireya " yes mother"
y/n " you all can come see the children later it almost time for their nap"
aonung " okay will we are off to deal with our task mom"
ronal " that good my children" the kids had left as you had put the triplets down for a nap, once they are asleep you are now sitting with ronal.
ronal " I came here to have some words of importance with you"
y/n " sure"
ronal " as you know my son will start taking a more serious role as the future leader of the clan, and sharing responsibilities with his dad"
y/n " yes he told me that this morning he very happy about it and I'm happy for him"
ronal " I'm happy for him as well but I wish for you to take over some roles of tshaik as you being his mate, you will share the title with tsireya"
y/n " I wish not to take away her birthright"
ronal " no need to worry y/n reya has benen told and agree with it, as you had helped her learn as well you healing ways have helped the clan in many ways and your connection with the great mother is mighty and beautiful ... tshaik was your brith right was it not"
y/n " yes but everyone wishes for my sister and my brother future mate over them as I was seen bad child or demon blood"
ronal " there no demon blood in you I was shocked when my son said he was in love, and I was hoping to meet the girl who stole his hair but we did meet ... in a way I was not hoping for"
y/n " I don't think anyone hope we will meet like that' you and ronal laugh a bit.
ronal " you are perfect learning the ways wonderful and soon making. name for yourself, and soon becoming one of the people and starting a family here as well"
y/n " thank you and I will like to take the responsibility and tile of tshaik"
ronal " good" well it was agree as now you will be taking over the some of the responsibilities of tshaik, an announcement had been shared with the people and soon enough word had spread around the village. As life in the village had become peaceful and clam at the moment that all changed when you heard horn blow.
y/n " has someone come or have the Scouts return" you had went to check on the children to see they were still asleep, as you soon went to see what was going and it seem like the rest of the clan is doing the same thing as well.
navi " new arrivals have come to the village"
navi 2 " yes it seems like they all have traveled a long way to get here"
navi 3 " they look similar to y/n they are from the forest as well ... oh y/n hello"
y/n " hello it seems like we have guests from the forest I'm going to see them" you had soon made you way through the crowd it was not the hard as they had made room for you, soon enough you had seen the newcomers bit by bit until you were close enough. Until you stopped walking as you reach the front, looking at the male navi who was at the front.
Jake "hello we come in peace we mean you all no harm" it was your family and old clan, even due it had been many years you could still remember them very well but it seems like they did see yet. Soon enough tonowari and kawwney had retune shocking the new arrivals, as they landed their creatures in the water and soon walked onto the beach.
Jake " I see you tonowari and I see you kawwney"
tonowari "Jake sully" soon enough ronal had made herself know as the crowd made room for her as well, she was now standing with her son and mate.
ronal " ......."
tonowari "why have you all come here"
Jake " we came here seeking refuge for my family and clan ... we seek uturu"
ronal " uturu"
Jake " yes for my family and clan please that all I ask for" ronal was walking around your family she soon noticed three of the kids, are just like you and her granddaughter. She knew of the history of your parents and was staring draggers at them.
ronal " there arms and tails are weak they will have a hard time adapting here"
Jake " we can adapt right everyone"
everyone " yes"
ronal " these three kids have the blood of sky people in them"
Jake " yes they are just like me two of them my kids and other one the adopted son of my right hand man Tsu'tey, but I was once sky people and become one of the people"
Tonowari " we all know tale of toruk makto but you are not the only one who has come here from the forest"
mo'at " what do you mean"
ronal " many years ago someone from the forest had made their own journey here
Jake " who we never knee someone from the forest had come here"
????? " hello it has been a long time hasn't it Jake sully" you soon showed yourself looking at your family and old clan, they all looked shocked to see you standing there.

y/n " yes we should let them stay it the will of the great mother, it will be horrible to send them away after all the way they came here"
Jake " y/n you are ...." Jake had tried to take a step near you but had been hissed at by kawwney who was glaring at the war hero.
tonowari " you and your family along with your clan will be allowed to stay here, we have some home and extra space for you all to use ... hut during your time you will be learning the ways of our people"
Jake " yes what do we say everyone"
everyone " thank you"
tonowari " my childern from my sons and daughter will be helping with your children and the boy with training, and y/n as well if she wishes to"
kawwney " y/n"
y/n " I will help them as I still hold my clan and old home close to my heart, even after all these years"
aonung " we will help for the sake and honor of y/n"
rotxo " yes we will do our best to help to our guests learn the ways"
Tsireya " yes we will"
tonowari " my people the sully family and their clan members will staying here with us as we see them learning the ways, but we will need to help them as they are babies taking thier first breathe" the clan was not that happy that much of helping the adults as they knew of your past, and hated how much pain you had been put through.
y/n " come with me I will show you around the village and where you all will be staying"
tsireya " I will help as well"
rotxo and aonung " us to"
y/n " then grab what we can and help them move come along so, you all will have enough time to settle in" there had been no time for words to be spoken, as the group had soon followed you as you showed them around village. Your family was now standing near their new home.

kawwney "I love you"
y/n " I love you as well" kawwney soon brought you into a hug and kissed your forehead, the both of you stayed awake before laying in bed and fall alseep after moving the kids to the bed. You had looked at your mate and kids, with a smile on your face yes you did have the strength for anything that will come for you. A smile grown on your face as you kissed your husband and kids on their heads, before falling asleep as well. As the last words had escaped your mouth before you had fallen asleep thank you great mother.

Masterlist
Ronal held the baby her arms, it was a healthy baby girl with dark hair. The woman who had given birth to the small creature was a human. She was sitting in the small body of water, exhausted, and covered in sweat. The birth had been a difficult one, the once clear water was now contaminated with blood. The other healers were helping the women get cleaned up, as Ronal approached her to hand her the baby, the woman was very weak to lift up her arms. “Please, take care of her...” she said as she felt her eyes heavying. “What do you mean?” Ronal asked the woman, who was in a very weak state. “I won’t make it... please... just please take care of her...” she begged, wanting to hear Ronal first before she passed.
Ronal saw the pain in her face, she is going to die very soon, and her baby will be alone. So Ronal nodded. “I will, now rest” she said comfortingly at the woman who smiled weakly and looked at the baby in the Na’vi’s arms. Then she closed her eyes, having taken her final breath. She passed, peacefully. Ronal then asked the healers to prepare her body for a funeral, its the least she could do.
During the ceremony, Ronal still had you tied with a big clothe on her chest, you were sound asleep. The villagers had set everything up for the funeral, everyone had attended as a form of respect, they may not have known the woman but they attended anyway. The healers who had helped with the birth were the ones that placed the woman’s body down to the yellow glowing ground.
After the funeral Ronal and Tonowari were in their Marui, Tsireya had already been asleep, that was a perfect time for them to talk. Ronal still had you on her chest, for some odd reason she did not want to let you go, she felt as if you needed to stay with her. You were already awake by then and was playing with her top since it had shiny pearls.
“What are we going to do with this child?” Tonowari asked as looked at you, who was distracted. “What can we do? I don’t want to leave her out to die, and we have no Idea where the woman came from if we were to try and send her to her people.” Ronal said towards her mate. Tonowari looked down at the infant, she was smaller than the average metkayina baby. He had no idea what to do with the child.
“Then we shall raise her, make her like the people” Tonowari suggested, Ronal looked at him. “Really? Do you think she’ll be able to be like us?” she asked as she looked down at the baby who was now trying to get her attention. “We have to at least try” he said looking at the small infant, seeing those big eyes of hers. It warmed his heart seeing the little creature in his mate’s arms. Ronal noticed this then got an idea. “Would you like to hold her?” she asked, catching him off guard.
“Hm, yeah why not” he said as Ronal then handed him the infant. He held the small child close to him, he got a good look at You. You’re the most loving creature he had ever set his eyes on, you’re just like his Tsireya. “Have you named her yet?” he asked as Ronal responded. “Not yet, what should we name her?” she asked as Tonowari continued to look down at you. “How about... Y/n?” he said as Ronal smiled, looking down at you. “I like that, Y/n it is.”
Since then on you were their daughter. At first Ronal was worried that you would not make it in the first week, she new the risk of women babies were born, some would not live long, but thank Eywa you did, she was also worried that you might have to be raised differently due to being different. That wasn’t the case, you were just like every other na’vi baby. You cried, you ate and you slept. But for sure Ronal would make it her mission that you will be like the rest of the Metkayina. Tsireya loves you, she was glad to have a sibling to play with, she didn’t really questioned on why you looked different or were smaller, she was just happy to have you as her little sister.
When you had become two months old, that was when your breathing and swimming lessons began. You had learned to swim, it was impressive on how fast you learned how to swim along with making yourself float. Ronal had been your teacher since the day you had arrive, she wanted you to be strong, she wished for you to be strong so that you were able to fend for yourself when you got older. As for breathing, you were having a hard time but you managed to be able to breath underwater.
Since you couldn’t bond with an Ilu or a Skimswim, so Tonowari would be the one to take you on a ride on his Skimswin. At first Ronal didn’t want you being around the aggressive like creature but surprisingly, the creature seemed to be gentle around you. Tonowari would take you on a ride while you were tied to his chest.
When it you got to the age of three, that was when Tonowari decided to teach you now to use a spear, he leant you his even though you were smaller than the spear it self. Your father really wanted you to be strong like him, you may not grow as big as him but he at least wanted you to learn how to wield a weapon. When your mother found out about this, she nearly died because she thought that you might have got hurt, can you blame her? You were smaller than the average Na’vi, but Tonowari managed to convince her that it was good for you to learn how to wield a weapon.
Tonowari loved how you would do things boys normally did, you’d climb on pal trees, tried to wrestle him, most of the time he would let you win. This was a way to boost your confidence in hand to hand combat. You began to hunt at a young age in the water, your first catch was a huge fish, that normally an older kid or an adult would be able to catch. Tonowari was impressed that you were able to catch a fish that big. Since then you had began to try and a catch a bigger fish then the last.
In all honesty, you were vey attached to Ronal ever since you were born. Even as you grew older, you’d be spotted with your mother, whether it was her attending to her duties or if she was just with the healers, you were always there with her. That’s a reason how you began to learn about healing methods, since she would always heal you when would get hurt, you had followed her example in wanting to heal others.
When Ao’nung was born, you were confused, you wondered where that baby came from. You thought your mother had just picked up from random baby somewhere and he was going to stay with you. Even a na’vi baby was bigger than you. Ronal explained that he is your younger brother, in which you promise to protect him since he is the baby of the family.
As you got older, you and Ao’nung would fight a lot, he was the one who would start the fight and you’d finish it. When he’d bug you, you’d end up fighting him. You’d often fight about you being the oldest and him being bigger you. You’d hate it when he would take advantage of him being the biggest, he would put stuff in high places knowing you couldn’t reach, he’d also hide the stoll your father made for you. Once Tonowari and Ronal had enough of this, they had planned a punishment. Your parents made both you and Ao’nung be together at all costs, no matter where, you had to be spotted together.
If Ao’nung wanted to go with his friends, you had to come along, if it was you who wanted to go with your friends then he had to go with you. When it came to doing chores, you both had to help one another. One time a boy from the village was interested in getting to know you, but Ao’nung scared him off, this pissed you off and you both had a fight again.
At some point you began to hiss at everyone, well everyone except your parents and Tsireya. One time Ao’nung was messing with you, that day you were not having it, so he continued to mess with you until you snapped. This time you had tackle him and bit him, he tried to get you off him but couldn’t, you had gone feral. Tonowari was the one who had to get you to stop nibbling on your brother. You got lectured by your mother for nearly nibbling your brother to death. You love your brother but sometimes you couldn’t stand it, sometimes you wish you had another sister instead of a brother.
You and Tsireya are best friends, you do everything together, from sharing each others clothes to telling each other everything. You both knew every little detail about each other, from likes to dislikes, you just knew everything. You both would just look at each other and have a silent conversation. You were the one that was very protective of Tsireya, even though she was older and bigger than you, when a boy would look at her for too long, you’d give him the look which would make him look away, out of fear.
When you began to question on why you were different, was when your parents told you the truth about who your mother was. It all made sense on why you were different than the rest. It hurt at first knowing that your mother didn’t conceived you like your siblings, but that now how it had to be. She along with your father raised you as if you were their own flesh and blood, they didn’t have to but they did. To them it didn’t matter if you were a na’vi or not, you will always be their baby.

(MENTIONS OF DEATH)
word count:1862
My father takes me out hunting with him. The hunters of our clan hunt closer to the end of the reef for bigger fish to feed our people. My father Tonowari looks away from me for a bit looking at the net to see what has been caught. I lean down to put my hand into the water and fall off making a little bloop noise. My father doesn't seem to notice me swimming off from everyone, talking to the hunters. “Uhm… Sir, wasn't your daughter with you?” A hunter asks, looking down and not seeing me. My father chuckles thinking he was joking and reaches down to pat my head and realizes I'm not there. He rushes into a state of panic telling hunters to look in the water for me. “Y/n!” My father yells out to me but I only hear his voice, not able to make out what he is saying.
I swim in the water watching a baby Mawup swim around. I see a small spiked-back creature with a white underbelly a few meters away. I turn my head sideways confused about what it is. It looks as if it's copying me, turning its head to me too. I reach out as it muzzles its head into my palm, it moves its head and swims closer to me and nuzzles against my leg before I feel a pair of strong arms lift me out of the water. It swims away from the big figure, scaring it off. “I want to go back!” I say patting my father's back, he chuckles. “Your mother would skin me alive if she found out I almost lost you near the reef boundaries.” He lifts me onto his Skimwing and then calls the hunter back, they all grab the net of fish for the week before heading back. I see our village Marui’s soon getting larger as we get closer. Once we reach the sand, I jump off to tell my mom what I saw. I see her and my big brother playing in the sand, building a small house out of the sand. “Mama, Mama!” I yell out to her and her head turns to me smiling, opening her arms open, and hugging me. I jumped into them excitedly to tell her what I found. “Mama, guess what I did!” My father arrived shortly after lifting my brother, Aonung, and swinging him around before sitting Aonung down to let him finish his same marui and listen to what I was saying. “So Daddy took me to where he gets fish and then I went to touch the water and fell!” I smile looking at my mom to see if she was listening. She smiles at me before glaring at my father. “Then, I swam and saw a big spiky fish, it was nice and it was a baby like me,”
I explain my mother looks at me confused never hearing of a spiky fish, she looks at my father confused he shrugs I continue, “It was gray, and his belly was white (a baby akula🤭)and he was so cute! We are friends now!”
I walk up to Aonung and ask him what he’s building. “It's a Marui, I'm gonna have my own when I grow up!” I smile and sit next to him. “Can we be neighbors? I want a big marui made out of seashells?” I ask excitedly, barely able to contain it. It was a radiation of happiness growing off of me.
*10 years later*
Y’all know I love some angst so here we gooo
I jumped in the water, something was off, It was hard to stay above water, the adrenaline from previously being on the boat and saving my sister, and the sully’s wore off. I hardly breathe, almost gasping, making Neteyam turn to me, he looks at me and his face drops in fear. “Lo’ak, Y/n’s been hit!” Neteyam yells, looking at me before dragging me to an Ilu. I started thinking about this inevitable death. I closed my eyes and blinked very slowly. Not fully coming to terms with it, I needed to talk to my family. I needed to see them even if it was the last time, for a long time. I hardly realize me being picked up and placed on something rough. I feel my back pressed to the rock and look around at the sand surrounding me. I hear yells from my mother, feet running against the sand. “Eywa no..” I see her lean over me on her knees, hair covering the light from the fire. I feel somewhat strong hands grabbing my hand and holding it. I turned and saw Aonung's tears filling his eyes. “Oh sister, what has happened?” Aonung asks me, but I couldn't respond. I see Tsireya drop-down next to me, she leans over my leg rubbing it. Oh, and how much it pained me, I turned to my father, anger filled his eyes but hiding behind that anger was sadness, an incurable emotion. My chest heaves up and down as words escape my mouth, “I see you, all of you” I see them look up at me as my mother's silent cries break out into a full-out sob, and my chest heaves for one last time.
The full sully family around me surrounded your body, Your mother lifting my body and hugging me, screams escaping her lips. Your father dropped down, and he broke down. Your father was a strong man with no weaknesses except one, his family. Neytiri tried to confront my mother by putting a hand on her shoulder. “GET AWAY! AWAY FROM THIS PLACE! AWAY FROM MY FAMILY! LET US MOURN, THE DEATH OF MY OLDEST DAUGHTER!” Ronal yells and hisses at Neytiri, yanking away her shoulder. Tonowari, hardly able to lift himself from the sand, goes to his mourning family, grabbing them and pulling all 5 of them together. There were no more Troublesome 3, only 2 and ½ kids left. He had to protect them no matter what, he could not let them take them as they took his oldest daughter. Tears seeped out of Aonungs eyes, no more swimming together, no more bullying each other, no more sibling rants, no more Y/n. He sniffles and looks at his remaining sister wondering about the thoughts that raced through her head, staring at her older sister.
Tsireya wanted to give up, her sister kept Tsireya grounded, she was in touch with her feelings but her older sister helped her get over the bad emotions… She kept Tsireya afloat when all she wanted to do was sink. She kept her balance, but as she watched her sister in the fight between life and death, seeing death win stabbed her heart repeatedly.
But nothing could even fathom how Ronal felt about her oldest daughter, her little girl that she cradled in her arms dead. The daughter she taught to be in touch with Eywa, the girl that grew into a beautiful healer, and strong like a warrior. The little girl that she sang to every night until they could sing together. Gone. Even when they argued and lost patience with each other, she felt lucky to even be a mother of a beautiful girl. She couldn't turn back time or pray to Eywa that she’d come back to her. She just hoped she could see her on the other side. To Eywa she returns, she'll find herself in a room with all the people we've lost and she dances with joy as pure as her father's heart.
And oh her father, her poor father, he would've given up everything he ever done, owned, or achieved to get his child back. He lost a piece of himself he could never get back, her smile now a memory in his mind. They can't ride together, and no longer practice spear fighting. If only he had one more day to hold onto his daughter tight, not like today when he let her free from his grasp of protection, he shouldn't have let her go. But he had to hold on for his kids, and his mate in such a vulnerable time for his family. Villages have fallen, from the sky people but out of all the stress of trying to keep his people safe, she was the reassurance he needed to push on, all of his kids were. Oh, how he was grateful to have the days he had with you. Now memories, memories he won't be able to relive with you now that you are gone. Time felt frozen, a moment feeling like forever. He wished upon every great star in the sky, for you to come back. Sadly, that’s just not how life works.
A few hours later they had to lay you to rest, in the ocean from which you were born. Ronal prayed that you will meet again whether in another life or before Eywa. Tsireya and Aonung cried watching as their, your parents swim below to put you to rest. Tonowari’s eyes were red as if they burned, from crying so much. Ronal knew you were somewhere you can be free from the murder and chaos of this world. Tsireya whispered a small prayer to Eywa, hardly intelligible, Aonung hand placed on her shoulder. She looked at his eyes brimming with tears again as Aonung pulled her into a hug. This night was forever marked in their hearts, always a reminder of what came of their sister and oldest daughter. Aonung wanted to scream but he couldn't, it wouldn't come out of his mouth. In his eyes, you could see sadness and pain. It wasn't just another night, it was a night where you fought for your life and lost. He knew everything in this world dies but he never thought yours would come so soon. Your parents emerged from the water, the water dripping off of them as they looked at their remaining children. Ronal swam and grabbed them and hugged them, she wanted to shield you all from this.. and she failed. She couldn't shield you but as she held her last 2 kids she knew she had to protect them. Tonowari came closer holding his whole family in his embrace, he felt as if someone was missing, and that someone was you. Where danger found them, it follows with tides of anguish and pain. Tonowari looked up into the sky a new star in the sky, not one of the sky people but a beautiful star and it shone on his family, the tears that he cried as the star twinkled, he believed you were letting him know that you were watching them and protecting them.

neglected sully (5)
Sully reader x metkayaina + sully family, tonowari family, and others
Now that the past has come back into your life everyone and everything had changed greatly, for you and the family you had built here. There had been some good things that came from seeing your loved ones again, but you need feel uneasy about seeing Jake and neytiri again along with the rest of your clan. It had been many years since you had been casted out from your clan and fled from your home, and now ones who casted you out have asked for help that had been given. How long can everything stay so clam until it blows over and soon there not stopping it.
y/n " ......" it had become the second day of the arrivals of your family and old clan, the first was very good for you as you seem to keep some distance from you and everyone else that hurt you in the past.
Kawwney " what the matter my love and don't tell me nothing, I know you so well" kawwey was cleaning his spare when he had noticed something was the matter with her.
y/n " I wish for someone who are very close to me and that I care, about to meet the triplets"
kawwney " so you mean your siblings, grandmother, and your human friends"
y/n " yes"
'kawwney " then yes we can make that happen it will be good after all"
y/n " are you serious my love" you soon looked and kawwney and grabbed his hand, getting his whole attention as she looked at you and smiled.
kawwney " yes my love it will be good for them to meet the triplets and we should tell them about us, as well if we are going to show them our whole family"
y/n " I love that idea"
Kawwney " I know you would"
???? " baba mama" you and kawwney soon turn around to see the triplet out from their beds.
kawwney " well it looks like they have official leaned how to climd out of their beds"
y/n " yes they have"
kawwney " come here little ones" kawwney had allowed the kids to come close to their parents, you soon laugh as the kids started interacting with their father.
kawwney " hey kids will you love to meet more family members"
kids " yes"
kawwney " well I think you have an answer ma y/n"
y/n " well that good to know" "the kids smiled towards you making you laugh back as they are so cute. The family had some breakfast together until the kids, had been handed over to some care taker for the day as the parents had to go off to lessons.
To the siblings and spider
Tsireya " oh yes y/n will be doing us for the lessons today with her being your sister"
kiri " hey there she is hey y/n ... wait and she with kawwney" the group soon saw you and kawwney walking together and talking. Kawwwny seem to say something to you that made you blush bright red and soon smack his shoulder as he laughed.
neteyam “ she is very happy with him” deep down your siblings and spider are happy, to see you with kawwney.
Ao’nung “ yes and our brother is happy with her as well”
loak “ hey tsireya who helped you with the necklace you are wearing”
tisreya “ oh your sister y/n she made it for me for my birthday last year, it so special to me and she has amazing taste as well”

Tsireya “ thank you”
Rotox “ well it seems like our brother is going off with father along with Jake and Tsu’tey” the kids soon looked as kawwney had joined the group of older males, but you were not with them anymore.
Tuk “ hey where is y/n”
y/n “ here little sister”
everyone “ y/n” you had smiled at the group as your siblings had hugged you.
y/n “ hey everyone so are we ready for our lessons” the kids and nodded their heads and soon enough the lessons had started. After some time the group had decided to get out of the water, that when they ran into some Navi and an avatar they knew.
ronal “ hello everyone”

moat “ oh my daughter leave them alone they can pick a mate when get wish to, there no need to rush them”
Neytiri “ it will be good for them to have a mate with them and help our family grow, then maybe have their own children”
loak “ well that hard to make that happen when you never let us make our own decision, and try to pick our mates”
neytiri “ we are letting you all choice in hopes our home will grow and family as well, when you bring your mates in our circle”
spider “ dad”
norm “ you don’t need to rush my son take your time”
neytiri “ that very human of you norm even due you and your son look like us, you still don’t act like us” neytiri soon walked off upset about the whole situation leaving everyone else there standing.
tsireya " don't let her words get to any of you even I and my brothers haven't found the one yet"
Ronal " yes my daughter you will fine the one in due time"
lo'ak " thank you"
neteyam " speaking of the one what is going on between you and kawweny and sone lie we know, there something between you and him" the four reef navi had looked at neteyam as she spoke his words towards them.

lo'ak " we will make sure they don't find out until you are ready to tell them"
y/n " thank you all"
ronal " now come all of you I will help you learn some of ways of the clan, when it comes some everyday life skills here" the group had soon followed the ronal as she showed them, some of clan ways of living and it all went well. the other had learned there is soft side to ronal once you get to know her better, and she seem to like your siblings and spider right away.
later that night
kawwney " this set looks amazing ma y/n you have done well"
y/n " thank you and I offer you a big thanks as well for help, me get everything ready and caught this big fish"

norm " can spider and lo'ak place this truck down if that fine"
kawwney " yes there some space over there I had cleared up"
norm " thank you" spider and lo'al had place the truck down it. lo'ak soon saw kawwney and made his way towards him.
lo'ak " hey kawwney it good to see you again"
kawwney " it good to see you as well your sister has told me so much about you all
neteyam " oh that amazing we have heard little about you"
lo'ak " yeah so what your relationship with our sister buddy" kawwney soon smiled at them and soon looked at you, he soon kissed your forehead.
kawwney " those that answer your questions"
y/n " kawwney there was a plan"
kawwney " what I can't help myself ma y/n"
everyone " ma y/n"
y/n " well it about time I tell you all kawweny is my mate and make me very happy, and I really love him and I hope you all can accept him"
neteyam " that amazing sister wow you are the first one to have an mate"

kiri " the great mother has blessed you sister and we are all happy for you"

norm " you found a good one y/n"
lo'ak " yeah I'm happy for you"
spider " same here and we thought we will need to fight you, but we might lost" kawweny " I will let you all win for y/n sake"
mo'at " kawwney" everyone soon stopped talking when they saw mo'at walking towards kawwney, even he seem worried about the whole situation.
mo'at " I happy my granddaughter found love after all that had happened, and I know you are good for her and I have heard good stuff about you from your family and clan"
kawwney " thank you"
mo'at " eywa has blessed you both and will forever bless you as well as the future of this clan"

kawwney " thank you I will be honored"
lo'ak " wow this dad has gotten good after all we have in law now"
kawweny " yes and I will love to have some time to bond with you all"
neteyam " we will love that"
tuk " oh hello" tuk was looking behind you and saw aylea looking at the group, soon two others had shown themselves as well.
lo'ak " who are they"
y/n " these are my kids my sons and daughter" the boys had come out right away to greet everyone while, ayela had stand put.

kaewia " hello"
spider " hey there buddy"
lo'ak " they are so cute"
roili " hi"
neteyam " hello little guy I'm your uncle neteyam" the boys seem to laugh about the whole thing. Neteyam had picked up roili making the boy smile while lo'ak held kaewia"
neteyam " this is your uncle lo'ak, uncle spider, and your aunt kiri and aunt tuk along with your great grandmother moat and this norm"
mo'at " they are like their father as your daughter is like you"

tonowari " now hand me over my grandchild son"
kawweny " no"
tonowari " as your father and oloeytahn I order you"
kawwney " I share the rank with you so overruled"
mo'at " well I over run you both so I will hold her for now" everyone laugh the kids seem to love having their new family members. The dinner had gone well as there had been promised and rules made, norm had helped explain the stuff he brought and if anything bad happens with your or the kids call for him and the others. It made you happy to see your family getting along well and growing as well. The night had ended well and you had gone to bed happy, knowing that you have overcome one challenge and there were many left but you are not alone.

(if youre name has a strike through it that means i wasnt able to tag you im so sorry guys i tried)
waking up felt extremely weird. you felt like you had taken the longest, heaviest nap ever. slowly opening your eyes to adjust to the light, you take in your surroundings.
you're in a shallow hole, you noticed as you looked around, and there was dirt around you. you look up at what you would think was the sky and see something else that you remember seeing before. you see the leaf covering that the omatikaya place over their passed-away loved ones. you usually see these leaf coverings from the outside. this caused a slight panic to settle in your chest?
why are you here? did you die? what the hell is going on?
you reached your arm up, still feeling weak from not moving your joints in you don't even know how long. you slowly press against the leaf covering, pushing it away from the hole and exposing the sun to your eyes. you shielded yourself before you felt a shadow standing over your form. it was mo'at. the tsahik of the omatikaya clan.
"tsahik?" it was the first word you said, and it caused mo'at to press a hand to her mouth in shock as tears sprang to her eyes. her granddaughter, who had passed away two years ago, was looking up to her from her grave that she had pushed open herself. the tsahik didn't understand. how could the great mother take you away for two years and let their family mourn and grieve your death just to send you back to them two years later?
this made no sense.
"come with me, my child," was the only thing mo'at said as she reached out to grab your hand. she intertwined your fingers, wanting to hold her granddaughter as close as possible, fearing losing you again. she helped you out of the hole slowly as you still had to get used to moving your arms and legs around again.
"ma tsahik?" you asked the older woman standing before you. "what happened to me?"
she didn't turn to look at you as she said in a hushed, almost hurt, tone of voice, "you died two years ago," you were left speechless. you didn't know what to say, so you didn't say anything. you tried to think back on what happened before you woke up from your 'nap,' but you couldn't remember anything. no matter how hard, no memories or thoughts came to your head.
"do not try to work your brain so hard trying to find answers that will come to you, my child. you'll hurt yourself." the tsahik jokes.
you looked up at her, seeing the slight smile on her face but missing the faint trace of tears in her eyes. you let out a small laugh at her joke.
"hey! i may not remember anything from before, but i know i was not stupid before i died." you laughed along, but this caused the tsahik to stop in her tracks, turning to you.
"say that again." she said, grabbing hold of your shoulders, her face painted with worry.
"i was not dumb before i died?" you said, confused at her sudden actions.
"no, child! the other thing you said."
"oh, that i do not remember anything from before i died?" your words were cautious because you didn't know if what you were saying was offensive.
"we must get you back to the camps." was all she said as she turned, grabbing your hand, but this time she walked with urgency. her pace was hard to keep up with due to your aching body, but you somehow managed.
once you started to enter your native territory, you felt eyes everywhere. everyone was looking at you. you get it; you died and came back, but did everyone have to stare at you like that? it wasn't like you were the olo'eyktans daughter before you died.
mo'at brought you to the center of the high grounds camp, and everyone gathered around to see what announcement their tsahik had for them.
she didn't have some big speech planned. she just held your hand and said to the clan's people.
"the great-mother has returned my granddaughter!" everyone was cheering and happy. this confused the sully family. the past two years after your death have been hard. the natives completely annihilated every rda soldier, lab, and scientist in sight. it was an unexpected, coordinated attack between the forest na'vi, the ice na'vi, and, surprisingly, even the ash na'vi. due to transportation, the water na'vi couldn't make it to fight the war, but they were able to send over some of their finest healers.
let's just say no ships are coming to pandora ever again. jake made sure to send a message to the humans back on earth that if they ever sent one of their own to his planet again, he would single-handedly rip them each limb from limb. that was a promise, not a threat. humans had not gotten a chance to respond to jake's words. right after he delivered his messages, he pulled the pin of a grenade and walked out of the ship, it and the rest of the camp's base exploding behind them. although they didn't get to respond, they sure did receive the message, and earth now no longer had an avatar program. as the na'vi walked away from the war, they were victorious once and for all.
neytiri was quietly braiding her youngest daughter's hair when she heard the cheers and celebration of the clan outside her home. and then that's when her three older children came running into their hut, screaming and crying, speaking simultaneously. it sounded as if they were speaking gibberish.
"hey, hey kids calm down. what is going on?" jake asked his children, who looked like they were in distress. he was sitting in the home's living area, sharpening his blade as he had nothing else to do.
"Y/N HAS RETURNED." it was kiri who got the words out first.
neytiri, jake, and tuk all froze. there was no way. the great mother had taken you right in front of their eyes. you have been gone for two years; it can't be. neytiri had visited your grave just last night. there you lay, closed-eyed and lifeless in front of her, but as she walked out of her home and into the center of the clan's gathering there, you stood. you looked skinny and malnourished, but you were standing, breathing, alive.
neytiri couldn't believe her eyes. she thought she was dreaming as she approached you slowly. she held your face in her hands, and as soon as she felt your skin against her own, she broke down in tears, engulfing you in the tightest hug you had ever felt.
"ow." you said when she squeezed a bit too hard. this caused the woman to release you quickly, as she had forgotten how fragile you were right now.
"ma ite, you have returned to me, oh great mother, you have answered my prayers. thank you, thank you, thank you," she said as she pulled you into a hug again, this time softer, as if she was afraid that if she held you too rough, you would break in her arms.
you, on the other hand, were nervous. granddaughter? ite? what is going on right now? there's no way you're the tsahik's granddaughter. you couldn't imagine what your mother would be like as a person, let alone any of your family. all you knew was that you were from the forest, but maybe eywa brought you back to the wrong part of the forest? you couldn't even look at the woman before you and pinpoint a resemblance. you had four fingers; some of her children had five, and you weren't like them. only one other child had four tingers, and you noticed it was the eldest son.
when you made eye contact with him, his eyes softened. neteyam hadn't looked into his twin's eyes in ages. he missed you like no other. yeah, neytiri had it hard losing her first daughter, but neteyam had his twin's life ripped from her body right in front of his eyes. at that moment, it was almost like he felt the bullets go through his chest as well. that's how great the pain of losing you felt. but looking at you now, he felt like his heart was whole again. but there was this look in your eye. you looked different. not physically. you looked at neteyam differently. almost like you didn't recognize him.
mo'at had hoped that seeing your home and your family would cause your memories to come flooding back, but the look on your face was not giving her that impression.
"i am sorry if i am ruining a happy moment…." you spoke up, causing everyone to immediately silence themselves so they wouldn't miss a word you said. but you didn't say anything that caused any happiness or joy in anyone. instead, your words scared everyone.
"–but i do not know who you guys are. i am not the tsahik's granddaughter and miss, i am not your daughter. i am sorry but i think you have things confused. please excuse me." you pulled yourself away from the woman who claimed to be your mother, but she tightened her grip on your hands.
"ma y/n, what do you mean? you do not remember me? i am your mother, your sa'nu. you are ma ite, my sweet girl." neytiri was taken aback. this isn't right, you're supposed to come back, and then everything goes back to normal. but the great mother has returned you with no memories at all. to you, neytiri was just a stranger claiming to be your mother.
the next person to approach you was the olo'eyktan himself. you couldn't bring yourself to look him in the eyes because of how his vast form intimidated you.
"itetsyip. maybe if you come home and see some of your things then you'll remember." he said, placing his hand on your back and walking you in the direction of what you assumed was their home. you quickly remove yourself from the two adults who had you in their arms.
"i am sorry but i am not your daughter. i do not want to enter your home to look at whatever things you think are mine. just because i have no memory of my family does not mean you get to take me away from them. the great mother may have returned me to my body with no memories but that does not mean you get to put whatever you want in my head, trying to get me to believe you. i only just returned. do you not understand how overwhelming this is?" you were scared. everything was happening so fast.
you just found out that you had been dead for two years, and now these people are trying to push this life in you that you know god and well that wasn't yours. you don't know who these people are, and they were making absurd accusations. maybe you really were in the wrong part of the forest.
"y/n stop joking around. do you not remember us? you are neteyam's twin sister for crying out loud. how can you be cruel enough to pull a joke like this? have we not suffered enough?" lo'ak was fed up with this whole situation. you were his sister, dammit. how could you not remember that? neteyam is your twin. you, tuk, and kiri were sisters. they're standing right in front of you, just begging you to run into their arms so they can embrace you.
you looked at the teenage boy oddly. like he had three heads. he doesn't know what he's talking about. these people are so pushy and demanding; you can't come from a family like this. you thought about it, and you knew they would be able to catch you if you tried to make a break for it, but you didn't want to be here anymore.
lost in your thoughts, you didn't notice the family's eldest son walking up to you. he gently grabbed your shoulders, looking directly into your eyes that were identical to his.
"you could not have forgotten about your twin brother have you, sister?" his words were soft. they sounded broken like he was hurting inside. from what? you don't know, but this isn't your problem to deal with. these people obviously lost somebody, but it is not you. you are not from here. so you hatched a plan in your head.
"maybe i just need to walk around the forest and re-familiarize myself. it–" you choked on your words, not even wanting to say it.
"it could help me regain my memories. and then we can be a family again, yeah?" you look into the boy's eyes, noticing them shining a bit brighter. you gave him hope.
that wasn't your intention. you just wanted to leave, so to make yourself 100x more believable, you hugged him. with all the strength you had in your body, which wasn't much.
everyone was shocked. even neteyam, but he didn't want to lose this moment, so he hugged you back tight, so you could feel his love but not too tight because of how weak you are. you pulled back from the hug, bowing slightly to everyone before you walked in the direction that you and the tsahik came from so you wouldn't seem lost. you looked back before you could fully disappear into the trees. eyes meeting those of the people who claimed to be your family. looking at them, you didn't even see where you would fit in. they already looked whole. so you managed a small fake smile, sent them a small wave, and continued your trek through the forest, trying to get as far away from the omatikaya people as possible.
by the time they realize you're gone, you'll already be way too far for them to find you. you wandered around, wondering why the great-mother returned you like this? did you not deserve to keep your memories?
almost as if she heard your question, the great mother flashed an image in your head. it was different shades of forest green, with indigo spots placed randomly around its body, looking almost like flowers. its wings were majestic, but you couldn't pinpoint what you had seen until it landed right in front of you, keeping you from walking off a cliff you hadn't even realized you were walking towards.
you couldn't believe that after two years of being gone, your ikran, syulang, was still alive. you named her syulang because, yes, of course, she looks like she's covered in flowers, but unlike other ikrans, syu was quiet, elegant, almost undetectable in the air. you would never hear her flying anywhere, and nobody knew why. the air would run smoothly over her wings, completely muting the sound of the wind rushing by in comparison to the usual loud, noisy ikrans that everyone else had tamed. syulang was delicate, like a flower. "syu! hi girl, oh my goodness you’re alive." you said as you created your tsaheylu with her for the first time in years. it felt like the first time all over again, except without the part where she tried to kill you. syulang was happy to see you as well, nuzzling into you. "syulang, we have to go. right now. come on girl, take me home." when you said this, syulang made a noise of confusion but allowed you to mount her anyways. the two of you took off into the night, the eclipse making it too dark for anyone to notice that an ikran was out flying. not like they would hear syulang anyways.
it's been hours. you still hadn't come back from the forest, and the sullys were getting worried. everyone was tense and stressed until kiri spoke up.
"she ran away," the teenage girl hadn't even realized it was herself who had spoken. she looked up and made eye contact with everyone in her family, repeating herself.
"she ran away, and she is not going to come back." tears sprung to her eyes as she just wanted her sister to return home. it was like eywa was dangling the most precious thing to them right in their faces, and every time they reached out, she snatched it away.
"she would not do that. she said she was just going on a walk. kiri have some faith in her. sure she did not remember us but she would not have hugged me if she was just gonna run away. she said she would come home." neteyam argued. he didn't want to believe that you had left them again, but that's what it was starting to seem like.
"we will check the ikrans. if hers is still there, then she's around here somewhere. we can go out and look for her." syulang had not left your family's ikran nest since the day you had passed. she was too depressed to do anything with her hunter being dead. the sullys made sure to take care of her for you, knowing you wouldn't want syu to suffer like you did. honestly, syulang was the closest thing the sullys had to you after you died. they'd take turns taking care of her at night, bringing tuk every now and then so she could see syulang too.
the walk to the family ikran nest was full of arguing. kiri said that neteyam and lo'ak had to come to their senses and realize that you were gone again. the boys refused to believe that you would leave again, but as they approached the ikran nest, seeing syulang's corner abandoned gave them the answer they fought over.
you had left.
"i told you she left. i mean for eywa's sake you guys bombarded her as soon as she got here!" kiri yelled at her family. she knew this was just displaced anger and that she didn't really mean it, but she was tired of holding her tongue.
"don’t you dare say we bombarded her! she is my twin who died in front of me! eywa forgive me for wanting to hug her after she's been dead for two years!" neteyam yelled back at kiri; this just caused a huge family argument to break out.
tuk, who was standing to the side watching her family fall apart, couldn't help but cry. she just wanted her family to go back to normal. "stop fighting…" it came out as a whisper, her family arguing so loud that they hadn't even heard her. so she decided to make them hear her.
"STOP FIGHTING!!" everyones' heads snapped at the youngest sully child. little tuk had just raised her voice at them for the first time ever.
"give me a break! we are all hurt okay?! us, y/n, grandma, the clan? everyone is sad! we did bombard her! she has not been here for two years. we should have let her settle in first. i get it. you guys miss her. so do i, but ma sa'nu when you talked to her she looked so confused and scared. and nete, when she was hugging you her eyes were so empty. she looked so lost. we scared her away. we had a chance to make things normal again, to be a family again and all you guys could do was be selfish and think about yourselves!! i just miss her. i want her to come back, i–" tuk couldn't even finish what she was saying as her sobs overcame her. neytiri scooped up her youngest daughter, cradling her in her arms, trying to soothe her harsh cries.
tuk had just lectured their entire family, and nobody could be mad at her because she was right. neytiri realized that she had been pushy. jake and lo'ak, too, but it wasn't because they were trying to scare you. they just missed you so much they couldn't contain themselves. they had been selfish, putting their feelings over yours once again. it was the same way they lost you last time, and now, who knows where you went or when you left. the family just remained in their ikrans nest that night, needing all the warmth they could get as they all just held each other and cried.
you didn't think you could fly any longer. it had already been a few days, and you didn't see the forest anymore. you already didn't have a lot of energy due to you being dead for two years, but it didn't help that you left with absolutely no supplies to survive on your own. everything was starting to look the same. you felt like you were going in circles, seeing the same islands over and over. the ocean water was beautiful, you had to admit, but right now, all you could think about was if it would cushion your fall if you fell off your ikran. you knew it was only moments before you passed out from exhaustion.
the world started to spin as if it wasn't already, your vision was in and out, and you felt sleepy. you were exhausted and couldn't fly another second. as your body completely shut down, you fell off your ikran and into the waters below you, your tsaheylu disconnecting in the process.
had it not been for the hunters out at three brothers rock, you would have died. they noticed your ikran flying in the direction of their mainland, assuming you were a visitor and that they would meet you when they got back to the island, but they knew something was wrong when they noticed your form plummeting from the extreme height, completely motionless.
they only took a few minutes to have you on the rock. they were nervous about doing cpr on you because you looked to be a teenager.
"ao'nung, come over here!" the hunter in charge called over the olo'eyktans son.
"what is it?" he said, noticing the tension in the air. he looked down, seeing you unconscious on the ground. his eyes widened. where had you come from? pushing that question aside, ao'nung took in your appearance, noticing how thin and weak you looked. he didn't know what it was, but it stirred something in him. you reminded him of his little sister, tsireya. if this was her, he would want one of the hunters to save her, so he put one arm under your shoulders and another under your leg and slid into the water, calling out to his ilu.
"i'm bringing her to my mother immediately. she looks weak. i don't even know if she'll live, but i have to try." he said before taking off as fast as he could to the mainland. he noticed above him your ikran was flying at the same pace as him, probably too worried to leave your side.
when ao'nung got home holding an unconscious forest na'vi, he received a lot of weird glances from the clan's people, but he didn't care. he rushed home, looking for his mother.
pushing the flap open to see his mother had just put the last of her herbs away, ao'nung called out to his mom.
"sa'nu! help! i– she needs help. please." hearing her son in distress, ronal was quick to give him her attention. instructing to lay the girl on the floor, she reminded herself to ask him where he had found her, but right now, she prioritized saving your life. she tried a healing remedy that would've usually worked, but you remained motionless. ronal put her ear to your chest, your heart was beating, but it was very faint. she knew only one thing she could do now, and it was the riskiest healing remedy known by all tsahiks. it has a minimal success rate but has healed some of the deadliest injuries known to eywa.
once the remedy was made entirely, ronal told ao'nung to get out and find his father and sister before coming back. the boy nodded, walking out to find his sister.
when he spotted tsireya riding on the ilus with her friends, he called her over. tsireya noticed her brother looked a bit more anxious than usual, so she excused herself and walked over.
"brother what is wro– oh!" ao'nung pulled his little sister into the tightest hug he could muster. she remained shocked as her brother wasn't really one for physical affection at all unless it was from his mother.
"please just– don't die on me, okay? at least not anytime soon. promise me, okay?" he said, pulling back and grabbing her shoulders as he looked into his sister's eyes. she just nodded and walked alongside her brother, wondering what on earth had him shaken up like this.
upon retrieving his father, ao'nung returned with his father and his sister in tow. when they entered the tent, you were in ronal's arms, crying your heart out. the woman just looked up to her family, shushing them as she continued to provide you comfort. hearing your cries throughout their home hurt their hearts. you cried like you were hurt like you had experienced grave pain, and it was coming back to haunt you.
from this moment on, the family decided they would take you in. they didn't know who or where you were from, but they wanted to heal you of this pain. their hearts hurt hearing how much pain your heart had to endure. there's a reason why eywa brought you to them, and they were not about to let you go.
you had been living amongst the metkayina clan for about half a year now. you weren't even recognizable from when you had arrived at the clan. when you got here, you were thin as a twig, you never had the energy to do anything, and you cried yourself to sleep every night. now, you had filled out your form, even gaining a bit of muscle from adapting to the metkayina ways. you had also completed your iknimaya, which meant you were allowed to get a tattoo. you choose to get two. the pain was well worth it, though, because once your leg sleeve and arm tattoo were complete, you couldn't have been happier.
you finally felt like your life was worth living again. you no longer cried yourself to sleep; instead, you snuck out with your brother and sister, going to the small island where all the young na'vi hang out. you were finally happy. the great mother had brought you home. she had returned you to your family.
the only odd thing was your dreams recently. you dreamed of the forest, of nantangs, woodsprites, and ikrans. things that have nothing to do with the metkayina. it was weird. you felt like eywa was trying to shove memories in your brain, but you were so at peace with your life that you disregarded it, too caught up, in reality, to be bothered by silly dreams.
you loved life on the beaches, in the sand, underwater, just taking in the beauty of awat'alu as you sat on a rock. at the same time, you watched ao'nung, tsireya, and rotxo playing on their ilus in the water. they were splashing each other, just taking time to be the teenagers they knew they'll never be again. you were about to cannonball in the water to join them when you all heard the horns of the clan being blown, announcing new arrivals.
you all stopped what you were doing, looking toward the screeches you heard. you knew that sound, that was bob, jake's ikran.
wait a minute… what?
whos jake?
‘jake sully’ said a voice in your head. you recognized it as she had spoken to you once before, but you couldn't remember where.
why is this name coming to your head right now? you felt your wrist being grabbed by your sister, tsireya. she dragged you to the beaches of your clan's home, where everyone else had gathered. you stood behind your father, tonowari, as you continued to think about the name that came to your head. who is jake sully, and why did you just remember his name?
"my children, ao'nung, tsireya, and–" tonowari paused, looking to his side at his children, realizing one was missing, until he turned around and realized you were just hiding behind him.
"–and my youngest, y/n, will teach your children the ways of our home, so you do not suffer the burden of being useless here," tonowari stepped aside, pushing you in front of him, so the family who had arrived could see you.
you looked up to make eye contact with the first person you spotted.
"tuktuk." the words were quiet from your mouth. the little girl, who had her head tucked into her mother's neck, perked up when she heard the nickname you used to call her.
"kiri, cut it out. that is not funny!" tuk said, looking at her sister, offended she would play a sick joke on her like that after they had just left their home.
jake and neytiri decided to move their family from the omatikaya clan, deciding that being there reminded them too much of you. it hurt to continue to live on the soil that you died on. so they up and moved their whole family elsewhere, flying towards warmer air and gorgeous waters. they fully expected to be able to find uturu with jake being toruk makto and their war being over. what they hadn't expected to see was their dead runaway daughter standing amongst a sea of teal na'vi.
slowly walking towards the family, tonowari called out to you, but ronal placed her hand on her mate's chest, telling him to shut up and watch what was happening.
"tuktuk," you repeated as you walked towards the girl. when tuk realized that the voice was coming from in front of her and not behind her, she turned her head around, her yellow eyes meeting yours.
"y/n!!" tuk practically dropped herself from her moms' arms, running up to you.
you met her halfway, falling to your knees, pulling your little sister into a hug, her face in your neck as you supported her head. as you looked at each one of them, their names, faces, and memories came back. you remembered everything.
"and you're neteyam, and lo'ak and kiri!" when your siblings heard you say their names, it was like a switch in them flipped. within seconds they were all in the sand hugging you and tuk, crying because you finally remembered them.
you pulled back from the hug, looking at the two people who hadn't joined the hug yet.
"sempu," you said, reaching your hand out to jake. he didn't even try to conceal his tears as he allowed himself to join his children in their hug.
your mother still stood there in awe. neytiri was scared. she was the reason you left last time and didn't want to scare you away again, so she just stood with tears rolling down her face, not knowing what to do. for the first time in her life, neytiri didn't know what to do.
you could see the hesitation in her eyes. but you were confused as to why. neytiri was the only one who treated you right before you died… so why is she the last to come to you.
"mom?" you called out to her, but she didn't move. did she not want you anymore? has she gotten used to the family without you?
you tried once more, refusing to lose your family again. "sa'nu, please." a tear rolled down your cheek, looking into your mother's eyes. you saw all the hurt and stress, everything she had to endure while you were gone.
hearing you call her sa'nu was the last push neytiri needed before she fell to her knees and joined her family's embrace. you have returned. you returned to your family, and you were safe. everyone pulled back from you, taking in your appearance. you had matured a lot since the last time they saw you. you and neteyam were about the same height now, but your muscles surpassed his due to all the swimming you do.
you noticed that he had noticed too, and you just nudged his shoulder with your own, "do not worry, twin, i will teach you everything you will need to know. maybe you will grow up to be big and strong like me," you teased your twin. neteyam rolled his eyes, laughing along with you.
"woah! y/n, you have a tattoo?" lo'ak asked as he looked at your left leg. you just laughed at his silly question. of course, that's the first thing he asks you.
"she has two! there's one on this arm as well," kiri said, holding out your right arm so they could see the tattoo that you had there as well.
"no fair, mom, i want a tattoo." tuk said, whining to her mother. neytiri laughed at her daughter's statement and just pet her head, moving her braids out her face. "maybe when you're older, tuk," she said.
"babygirl," your father grabbed your attention. "i just want you to know that we are all so sorry for how we treated you before you past–" you cut your father off, shaking your head.
"it is in the past. the great mother may have returned my memories but it is me who gets to choose which ones to remember. i want to leave the past behind me. i have found a new home here. new peace. a found family who loves me dearly. i don't want you guys to feel like you have to atone to anything. eywa has given us a new start, so i think we should welcome it with open arms instead of trying to mend that has already been healed," you really had matured in your time away from the sullys.
they all looked at one another. if that was what you wanted, they would be sure to leave the past in the past so they can embrace the chance to make things right with you.
you stood, the rest of the sullys following. you walked back over to tonowari and ronal, pulling them into a hug.
"just because my memories have returned does not mean that you are not my family anymore. you have all helped and healed me from wounds that i did not know i had so i can only thank you, sempu, sa'nu. you guys are my found family and i would not trade you for the world." smiling up at your other parents. Wow, this is gonna get confusing, but you were more than excited to have two families.
you looked over and pulled ao'nung and tsireya into the hug as well. "you guys, too, thank you so much," you said to your siblings. they couldn't do anything but hug you back. you may not be their biological blood, but they could care less. you are now one of their people. ronal and tonowari will always see you as their daughter, and ao'nung and tsireya will always see you as their sister. you will always be family to them.
you and tsireya decided to guide the sully family to their new home, as ronal had allowed them to stay. you noticed that lo'ak was eying your sister up quite a bit and decided that you would tease him about it later. you were just happy to finally feel at peace. you finally had the family, the life you had dreamed of.
you couldn't do anything except thank eywa for all the good she brought into your life.
‘you're welcome, my child.’ it was the same voice that you heard earlier. when you realized that she was responding to your thanks, if you finally clicked whose voice you were hearing.
it was eywa.
she was with you. she had always been. throughout this journey, she made sure to stick by your side. that was something that you couldn't be more grateful for.
‘be free my child, allow nothing from here on out to hold you back. you are meant to live a happy life, and now you are able to do so.’

chapter two
It was early in the morning, long before the sun peeked over the horizon and bathed the village of Awa’atlu in a soft golden hue. You were silent as you crept toward the entrance to your family’s marui, placing your feet ever so carefully as to not disturb your siblings and parents and undoubtedly cop a string of questions as to why exactly you were up so early. You’d lie your way out of it, as usual, but you would remain under suspicion for far too long. But by now, you had this sneaking out business down to a fine art. Your mother’s duties as Tsahik had her awake fairly early most mornings and your father– well, you were sure the entire village knew when he was asleep given his occasional thunderous snores that you heard even in your dreams (or nightmares depending on your persuasion).
There was a short expanse of time when both your parents slept soundly and you could get away uninterrupted and unsupervised for secret little training sessions with one of the village elders, Teyoa, who was a total thorn in your side but he was the only one who agreed to train you. Your father was sure there was no need for such things as learning to fight or use an array of weapons for anything other than hunting– the Metkayina were not at war. But even from a young age, you were fascinated by the stories of warriors and the battle with the great Toruk Makto that the elders would secretly tell the children. You were sure you wanted to be a warrior, fight to defend your people. But being the oldest daughter of the Tsahik and Olo’eyktan meant there was a heavy responsibility on your shoulders. You were the tsakarem, destined to be the Tsahik one day– a far cry from your dream of being a warrior.
Then there was the total mess of having to be mated one day, you considered that to be absolutely appalling– of course, your mother would scoff and tell you off for being dramatic– but you did not want to be mated to some random boy in the village, all of which you had the utter displeasure of growing up with for the most part. You dreaded the day you passed your Iknimaya– which was a breeze by the way– but it also meant you would be an adult, able to be courted and approached by the absolute meatheads that lived in your village.
“He’s a nice boy,” your mother would comment as you rolled your eyes so far back you saw your equally displeased brain.
“He also gave Ao’nung a bald patch when we were children,” you scoffed, pulling on the intricate and almost suffocating neck piece your mother insisted you wear when boys began courting you.
“Must you have an excuse for everything?” Ronal would sigh, pressing her hands together as if praying to Eywa for the strength to not throttle her eldest child.
“Mother, A’tok is boring at best. Father would not approve of him being the next Olo’eyktan,” you would reply with a shrug, finally untying the neck piece and replacing it with the simple beaded one Tsireya had made for you many eclipses ago.
“Eywa, give me strength,” Ronal would mutter, eyes glancing up at the sky as she returned to the healing tent to tend to the wounded hunters.
Your parents were sure you made it impossible on purpose. You would avoid courting boys from the village like the plague, using your sister or tsakarem duties as an excuse almost every time. But Tsireya loved love; she would point out some of the cute village boys that came to court you, noting the gifts they had bought or their kind demeanour– she was too sweet for her own good. You had dirt on almost everyone, noting the times some of the older boys had bullied Ao’nung or bad mouthed your sister or parents– you held a grudge.
Your mother tried to busy you with tsakarem duties if you were so adamant on borderline bullying the Metkayina boys into leaving you alone. You found it boring at times, wishing you were out hunting or practising your weaponry skills with Teyoa. Of course, you wanted to honour your family and your clan, but you wanted to learn to defend the land and your spirit brothers and sisters the tulkun too. Interpreting the will and Eywa and being a healer wasn’t exactly where all the action was. Tsireya would have been a better tsakarem than you. You had heard of villages where sisters lead their clan alongside each other as Olo’eyktan and Tsahik– you would lead them in flesh and your sister could lead them in spirit. But that’s not how the Metkayina did things and Eywa forbid you mess with tradition.
So you paid attention for the most part, learned to look for ripe fruits, herbs and created healing balms and practise healing techniques. But you found it so uninteresting and boring, but you loved your people and your parents, so biting your tongue and carrying on would be enough for now.
But it only lasted so long before you wanted to sit at the bottom of the reef in an act of protest and ignore your never ending list of responsibility as the tsakarem. When you went around begging some of the elder warriors to train you, they feared the wrath of your parents (mostly your mother) and told you to stop behaving like a child. Teyoa thought you were amusing and decided to teach you, but his teaching methods were weird and required the patience you simply did not have.
“I do not see how hitting this poor defenceless bag of sand is effective,” you would grumble, burying the end of your staff into the sand, leaning on the thick weapon. Teyoa circled around you as you ‘fought’ this bag of sand, not even using a ‘real’ weapon as you so eloquently put it.
“You must be patient, child. A good warrior and hunter is patient,” he lectured, picking the staff up out of the sand and handing it to you. “Again.”
You let out a sound of annoyance before you forced the stance Teyoa had ingrained into the fabric of your soul, holding the staff toward your enemy (bag of sand) and beginning your usual fighting techniques. Teyoa had his arms crossed as he watched you, studying your form. You had a strong heart and will, always wanting to prove yourself and while he had never seen someone with such a keen heart, you were impatient but he was sure you would see it one day.
Your hands were always covered in blisters and small bruises from your training with Teyoa. He told you that warriors had tough hands, they needed the strength to wield any weapon and battle any odds. Your eyes would sparkle at the thought and you were always proud of the injuries from your hard work– though hiding it from your parents proved to be a challenge in itself. Teyoa knew he could probably get into trouble for teaching the Olo’eyktan’s daughter to fight, but you were so adamant and protective of your people, it was hard to say no.
That was the routine most days– rise early to train with Teyoa and be back before your parents even realised you were gone. You had gotten better at fighting, you would easily hold yourself in a fight and wanted to prove yourself to your father but seeking out a fight wasn’t exactly the mark of a good warrior.
“Where are you going?” Tsireya asked quietly, her voice barely above a whisper. She rubbed her eyes tiredly and you stopped dead in your tracks, turning painfully slowly to face your little sister.
“Nowhere,” you replied pathetically.
She gave you a look of confusion as her gaze shifted from your head to your feet. Your tail twitched anxiously as she watched you, “it doesn’t look like you’re going nowhere.”
“Go back to sleep, Reya,” you whispered, heading toward the entrance of your family’s marui. Tsireya stood up from her mat, wrapping her arms around herself as she met you in the middle of the marui.
“I see you do this every morning, sister. You’re worrying me,” she pouted. You sighed softly in defeat, turning to face your sister.
“I’m seeing a boy–”
“Lie.”
“I do not lie,” you replied, offended.
“You lie all the time,” Tsireya retorted, “and you do not like any of the Metkayina boys. I see through your lie and I demand you tell me the truth,” she said a little louder.
You sighed, running your hands down your face. It was impossible to lie to your sister, she knew you too well. “I’ve been training with Teyoa.”
Tsireya battled with the confession for a moment, “the old warrior?” she questioned.
“Yes, he’s been teaching me,” you replied.
“Mother and father will not be happy,” Tsireya commented, folding her arms over her chest.
“I’m aware, hence the leaving at stupid times in the morning,” you said with a huff. Tsireya gave you that look she always gave when she was worried and you felt your heart squeeze. “I am careful, Reya. He has taught me many things, I feel I can defend our people and– and the tulkun.”
“We are not at war,” she quickly said, grabbing your hands and squeezing them in her own. “You do not need to fight. We are safe here–”
“The tulkun go missing, Reya. The other clans speak of their spirit brothers and sisters disappearing, I cannot let that happen,” you replied, holding Tsireya’s hands tightly. She looked at you with such worry in her eyes. “I feel it,” you said quietly, “I feel something is wrong, that something is coming.”
“You cannot be sure,” Tsireya sighed, shaking her head.
“I am the future Tsahik, sister. I think I know when Eywa speaks,” you teased.
“You would be a good Tsahik,” she said after a beat, knowing how you felt about your duties as tsakarem. You smile at her words, cupping her cheek softly. She knew how you felt about your tsakarem duties, wishing so desperately to be a warrior instead of a healer. But you were soft when you wanted to be, she was convinced you would be an excellent Tsahik one day.
“I must go,” you whispered, letting go of her hands.
“Be careful,” Tsireya sighed, “you cannot be so sneaky forever.”
You turned around just before stepping outside your family’s marui, “watch me.”
You sat on the beach of the neighbouring island of Awa’atlu. Your legs were covered in sand as you worked on crafting your heavy bow. Metkayina preferred to use spears, but Teyoa taught you how to make a bow, a dying art in his opinion. You had been working on it for a couple of days in secret, not wanting your parents to find out you were spending your time making weapons instead of learning to perfect your healing techniques.
“Looks good,” Teyoa commented, holding a spear and woven basket of fish in his hands. You glanced up at him and let out a sigh.
“I cannot get the string tight enough, hardly a weapon for a warrior if you ask me,” you huffed, your fingers red and tired from the thin string that was steadily starting to wear at your poor fingers from how hard you’d been trying to pull it taut.
Teyoa silently sat beside you on the sand, the heavily tattooed elder Metkayina fixing your sloppy handiwork in a matter of seconds. “Now it is a weapon fit for a warrior,” he grinned as he handed it to you. You stood up, feeling the weight of it in your hand. “It will take some getting used to–”
You lifted one of your crafted arrows, pulling the string taut before releasing it on an unsuspecting fish in the shallows of the reef. You ran toward the water, pulling the fish out with a grin on your face. Teyoa began to laugh softly.
“You overachieve,” he shook his head.
“Was that a compliment?” You teased.
“Hardly, child,” he chuckled.
You practised your aiming skills in the shade of the forest, Teyoa occasionally correctly you but leaving you to practise for the most part. You definitely lost track of time because by the time you returned to the beach, the sun had risen over the vast horizon of Pandora, a grim reminder of the fact your parents were definitely awake and you were definitely not in the village.
“Oh, Eywa, no!” You almost yelled as you started running toward the beach, clicking your tongue to get your ilu’s attention. Teyoa stayed behind, picking up his woven basket full of fish he had caught earlier and watching as you scrambled through the water.
“I’d like to see you lie yourself out of this one!” Teyoa sang from behind you. He never took much seriously, he was too old (his words) to care much about ‘getting in trouble’. You, however, cared a lot.
You dipped into the water with your ilu, quickly making tsaheylu as you tore through the water back toward your village– you were so dead and while your sister would try to cover for you; Tsireya was a pretty bad liar. Your ilu zipped through the coral reefs, pushing itself as hard as the poor animal could for your sake. You quickly surfaced, taking in a deep breath of air when you heard it– the loud horn you knew all too well.
That horn meant a few things: the tulkun were back, a ceremony was beginning or someone was missing, and given where you were and the fact that your parents had no idea, you were sure it was the latter. You dipped back before the surface, hoping and praying to Eywa your mother wouldn’t skin you for this one.
You swam in through a small opening in the twisting branches around the reef, watching as your village gathered on the sandbank, probably copping a not-so-subtle interrogation from your father about your whereabouts before he sent out the search party.
You definitely couldn’t lie your way out of this one.
Tsireya shifted anxiously as she stood by her brother, glancing around the crowd for you. She only half listened to her father as he spoke to these strangers from the forest, their sudden appearance in their village frightening the Metkayina. They were seeking uturu and while your father seemed to consider the idea, your mother scoffed at such an ask.
After a few uncomfortable minutes, Tonowari made the decision to let Jake Sully and his family stay in their village. Tsireya knew it would be difficult for them as forest Na’vi learning the way of water, but she was eager to teach.
“Our children, Ao’nung, Tsireya and…” Tonowari let out a sigh as his eyes fell on only his two youngest, with you nowhere to be seen. Tsireya winced uncomfortably at her father’s gaze. He looked around for a moment before finishing, “they will teach your children our ways.”
“Where is your sister?” Ronal asked, pulling on Tsireya’s arm. Tsireya felt like she was going to explode, unable to form a single coherent thought that wouldn’t totally expose your little routine.
“I am here!” Your voice broke out across the beach, the crowd parting for you as you made your way toward your parents. You were out of breath, your chest huffing up and down and your hair a soaked mess from your panicked race home. “Mother, I am sorry, I–” You trailed off at the sight of foreigners in your village. You recognised them as forest Na’vi– why would forest Na’vi be here? There were six of them; a family.
The forest was exceedingly far from your home in the reef and the family before you looked noticeably tired from their journey and you could only imagine how out of place they felt in your village. The youngest forest Na’vi looked at you curiously, hiding behind her father’s leg as she watched you, you smiled softly, the little Na’vi grinning back and holding her father’s leg.
“My daughter,” your father said, your attention snapping back to him, “how nice of you to join us.”
You winced at the comment, some of the younger Metkayina snickering at the comment, your brother doing the same. Tsireya swatted at his arm, effectively shutting him up. You stepped toward your father, “Father, I–”
He held his hand up, silencing you. You were going to hear about this later, you were absolutely sure of it. “Help your sister move Jake Sully and his family into their marui,” he said lowly, to which you nodded, not daring to argue with him. “I want you to teach their children our ways,” he looked at Jake Sully and his family, “so they do not suffer the shame of being useless.”
Your father gave you a look, a look that silently asked you where you’d been while simultaneously telling you he didn’t want to hear it. Tsireya came to your rescue, quickly grabbing your hand and turning to smile at the forest Na’vi. “Come. We will show you our village.”
You walked alongside Tsireya through your village, watching as she peaked behind her occasionally at what you assumed was the youngest of Jake Sully’s sons. You followed her gaze, grinning softly at your adorable sister. She caught you watching her, becoming embarrassed.
“What?” She questioned, completely unprompted.
“I said nothing,” you replied, trying not to laugh. You carried a few of the Sully’s belongings to the empty marui near the edge of the village, at least you could give them a little bit of privacy while they adjust to their new home.
Tsireya shuffled into their marui, placing their things down, “this will be your new home,” she grinned sweetly. You trailed behind her, finally getting a good look at the entire forest family. You stared at them curiously, noticing their thin tails and arms, their darker blue skin and piercing yellow eyes. You had never seen Na’vi like this before and it intrigued you.
“Thank you, this is nice, right?” Jake turned to his mate and children, smiling through his wince as his mate dropped the rolled hide on the floor with a huff. Jake turned to you and your sister, “Thank you, Tsireya and… I’m sorry I don’t think I caught your name.”
Your ears perked at the sudden attention on you and you quickly told him your name, bowing your head softly. Your tail swished behind you as Jake introduced his family to you and your sister, “my mate, Neytiri,” she seemed displeased with the arrangement and was rather… intimidating. “My daughters Tuk and Kiri.” Tuk waved happily at you, to which you returned with a small smile while her sister Kiri seemed uncomfortable, pulling on the corners of her shawl. “And my sons Lo’ak and Neteyam.”
Tsireya smiled at the ground as Lo’ak caught her eye, smiling softly at your sister. But your eyes lingered on his oldest son, Neteyam. He watched you curiously and he was hard to read, he looked you up and down and you almost frowned. You stared back at him for a fleeting moment, wondering what his problem was.
“Right, well,” Tsireya said, pulling your attention to her, “we will leave you to settle and get some rest, we can go swimming in the reef later on,” she smiled politely, nodding her head as she grabbed your arm, pulling you out of their marui.
You felt Neteyam looking at you as you left, turning your head to peek back at him. Eywa, what is his problem? You thought, making a face of disdain as you caught up with your sister.
“What’s his problem?” You grumbled. You walked shoulder to shoulder with her as you made your way back to your parents in the middle of the village.
“You mean Neteyam?” Tsireya asked. You gave her a look and she giggled, “he was checking you out!”
“What? No, he wasn’t,” you frowned, a feeling of disgust pooling in your chest. Tsireya nudged your shoulder with a laugh.
“Oh, my sister. You may be a great warrior, a Tsahik in training and have a gift for scaring boys away, but he was definitely checking you out,” Tsireya babbled on and you rolled your eyes. You weren’t exactly unpopular when it came to boys wanting to court you, if anything, you did pretty well for yourself. But you simply weren’t interested in finding a mate any time soon, you were only sixteen, it felt ridiculous to rush into things (even though your parents pestered you about choosing a mate).
“How ridiculous,” you retorted. “He is a forest Na’vi, we are reef Na’vi, I’m sure he was more preoccupied with our staggeringly different appearances,” you attempted to explain the reason for his lingering gaze but your sister really wasn’t having a bar of it.
“Are you saying you didn’t think he was cute?” Tsireya asked, quirking a brow at you. You stopped in your tracks, giving her an unimpressed look. She let out a dramatic gasp, “you do think he’s cute!”
“I do not,” you retorted childishly.
“Do not lie!” She squealed. “I never thought I would see the day!”
“You pain me,” you sighed, pinching the bridge of your nose.
“My sister likes a boy!” She sang.
“I do not like him,” you grumbled as Tsireya danced circles around you with a grin on her face. She tugged on your arm as she jumped up and down with excitement. You would admit that he was cute but you were allowed to admire and ignore– that’s what you did best, because boys are usually cute until they open their big dumb mouths.
