Braves Stave Off Late Twins Comeback In Win.

Twins 5 Braves 7 W-Fried (2-0) L-Varland (0-1) SV-Robles (1)

The Minnesota Twins made the short trip up to North Port to square off against the Braves. They were facing a solid lefty as Max Fried took the field for Atlanta. The Braves bats were hot early as Ronad Acuna led-off with a single to center. Matt Olson followed and lofted a Louie Varland pitch that kept drifting out right. The ball left the yard for a two-run home run and Atlanta struck first. The next batter, Austin Riley crushed a Varland offering off the batter’s eye in center field. The back-to-back home runs put the Braves up by three early. Atlanta got back to work in the third as Matt Olson lined a single to left and Austin Riley walked. A wild pitch moved up the runners and Sean Murphy reached on an infield single, which plated a run. Sam Hilliard singled home another run and the Braves led by five after three frames. Ryan Casteel led-off the fourth with a double and reached third on a grounder. Austin Riley dumped a single into left and the Atlanta lead grew to six. The Braves would rally again in the sixth when Kevin Pillar was brushed by a pitch. He stole second base and Ronald Acuna knocked him in with a base hit to left. The Twins finally broke through in the eighth as Anthony Pratto led-off and was hit by a pitch and reached second on a wild pitch. Jose Salas singled him home and Chance Sisco walked. With one out, Yoyner Fajardo reached on an infield single, which scored a run. Chris Williams followed when he plated a pair with a double to left. Kala’i Rosario extended the inning with an infield single. Jake Rucker hit an RBI single to right to pull the Twins within two. Domingo Robles had a 1-2-3 ninth and the Braves closed out the win in North Port today. 

-Final Thoughts- Louie Varland struggled with command of his breaking pitches early. He went two innings and allowed five runs on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Danny Coulombe threw a scoreless third, Simeon Woods Richardson gave up a run over two innings of work, and Dennis Santana struck out the six and allowed a run in the sixth. Jovani Moran fanned one in a clean seventh and Trevor Megill struck out the side in the eighth. The Twins scattered eight hits and went 5-for-10 with runners in scoring position. They left eight men on base. The Twins will have another split-squad day tomorrow. Joey Wentz will face Pablo Lopez at Hammond Stadium as the Tigers visit the Twins. Tyler Mahle will go against JT Brubaker up in Bradenton against the Pirates.
