Seiyū Love: Romi Park
Tumblr media
Iā€™m more aware of male Japanese voice actors, but I donā€™t want to only write about guys. While I donā€™t have a #1 femaleĀ seiyÅ«, Romi Park is one of my absolute favorites!
Best known for Edward Elric fromĀ ā€œFull Metal Alchemist,ā€ Park has portrayed more male characters than female; she has even done non-binary roles. Perhaps itā€™s just my perception, but it seems thereā€™s been a growing sentiment among US fans against having male characters played by female actors. Having had countless favorite male characters performed by women, Iā€™ve never had a problem with it and donā€™t understand the sentiment. I also donā€™t approve of fans trash-talking the practice and/or individual actors.
Is it just that US fans think Goku fromĀ ā€œDragon Ball Zā€ should have a deep, manly voice? Or is it sexist bias, unconscious or not? The people making the casting decisions in Japan and directing the actors are professionals who worked hard to get where they are; their choices are intentional.Ā ā€œDragon Ballā€ was an action comedy starring a kid, after all. To have changed Gokuā€™s voice would have not only been disrespectful to the actress whoā€™d voiced him from the start, it would also have changed the show in a fundamental way, cutting off its comedic roots. Maybe itā€™s just that itā€™s easier to criticize, that speaking ill of something gives a false sense of empowerment? I donā€™t usually hear anyone commenting on Kuririn/Krillin, so maybe it is just Goku?
I digress! Parkā€™s roles tend to be tough, capable, and intelligent. Since Iā€™m a sucker for smart characters, I tend to like hers. How do you convey intelligence with your voice? Iā€™m not 100% sure, but Park does with apparent ease! While her roles usually have the corner market on badass, her emotional range within those roles is immense. Itā€™s Parks ability to express fury, frustration, humor, distraction, arrogance, authority, and heartache that make us love Edward Elric so much.
Male, female, or otherwise, Iā€™m always excited to hear a new character being voiced by Romi Park. I know any character she portrays will be engaging, dynamic, and spot-on.

#fantasycasting #whatif #voice For Shouko it was a no-brainer for me. Romi Park was the first choice I had for her. Someone who can go from husky and aggressive to soft spoken and polite. #girl #voiceactor #seiyuu #casting #RomiPark #tomboy #warrior #manga #anime #ć‚¢ćƒ‹ćƒ” #ćƒžćƒ³ć‚¬ #声å„Ŗ #ļ¼£ļ¼¶ #å„³ć®å #ē¾Žå°‘儳 #ShoukoAsamura #SixthSun
