Addicted To The Prettier Things
Fandom: Sanders Sides
Ships: Romantic Mosleep/Sleepality (this ship is so underrated please cry with me)
Summary: Remy and Patton take road trips together and Remy quite enjoys the opportunity the long car ride gives him to watch his boyfriend.
Warnings (in order of strength): None as far as I’m aware! Please tell me if I need to add anything.
Genre: Pure tooth-rotting Fluff, Human AU
A/N: I was feeling down and writer’s block was kicking my teeth in but apparently I just needed to write some cute fluff. The title is a lyric from this song I’ve been obsessed with lately. Also @ my taglist peeps, I promise I have a full length fic in the works that I’ll get out to y’all as soon as I get my life together. Love you all 🖤✨
Ao3 Link   Masterpost    Fic Request Info
Remy liked napping in the car. It was the perfect transitory experience. Was he asleep? Not quite. Was he awake? Definitely not. Did he know where he was? Somewhere in the middle of nowhere and that’s all he cared to know.
Sunlight streamed through the car’s windshield and weakly past Remy’s dark sunglasses. The light wasn’t piercing; it was warm and rested gently against his eyelids. Occasionally the sun was blocked by a cloud or a freeway overpass sign creating a patchwork of gentle shade.
It was peaceful, the car bumping softly the few rare times Patton couldn’t avoid a pothole. Patton was a good driver. He drove slower than most and often chose longer routes just because he knew the road would be clearer. Remy didn’t mind; the back roads took them to blue skies and thick trees and fields that would have seemed untouched if it weren’t for the dark highway that snaked through them.
Besides, the longer the drive, the more time he got to spend with his boyfriend.
Of course he loved their monthly road trips, but the car rides were his favorite part. Patton had this cute habit of humming; never loud, just a soft, constant melody that would inevitably lull Remy to- well not quite sleep, but peace. It was something better than sleep, something more like perfectly calm contentedness.
Patton was humming now, quietly narrating every turn and pass- “First I slow down so you can get past me. And then I put my blinker on and sneak into that lane.”  Remy was sitting with his head resting on the doorframe and his eyes closed but he couldn’t resist smiling at Patton’s voice.
Patton must have caught him because Remy felt a hand run through his hair and scratch lightly at his undercut, “I thought you were sleeping.”
Remy shifted into the touch without opening his eyes, “Yeah well, I thought you were driving.”
Patton chuckled and moved his hand back to the wheel. Remy moved in the direction he knew Patton’s hand had retreated to and tried to glare up at the other man. Try being the operative word. It was hard to even appear upset when Patton was looking so angelic. His blue eyes sparkled as he stared straight ahead at the never ending road and his lips were quirked just slightly into a grin.  The sunlight danced through his hair, giving him shimmering highlights as it turned the brown segments into gold.
Patton glanced down and smiled as he made eye contact with Remy. He realized with a shake of his head that he had been staring. Patton brought his hand back to the top of Remy’s head, gently gripping the dark brown locks between his fingers and scratching at his scalp with blunt fingernails.
Remy melted at the touch. He leaned across the center console and probably would have crawled into Patton’s lap if he could’ve.
Patton was openly laughing now, “Good lord, Rem, you’re like an overly friendly cat.”
Remy could tell Patton was trying to get a reaction out of him and decided it would be far more entertaining just to ignore his boyfriend.
Patton tried to pull away but Remy clamped his hand over top of his head, effectively trapping Patton’s fingers in his hair.
“Remy, I need to drive!” Patton laughed again but Remy could hear a slight edge on his voice, “Go back to sleep.”
Remy relented, letting go of Patton’s hand and moving his knees to face outward. But he refused to close his eyes. It was far too tempting to keep staring at Patton for the rest of the trip.
Patton looked adorable when he concentrated. His brows scrunched together and sometimes he stuck his tongue out like a little kid. The streaming sunlight filtered in and out of Patton’s eyes, transforming them from light crystal blue to deep turquoise.
Remy wasn’t sure how long he stared and he didn’t really care. It was a lovely thing to be able loose focus watching his boyfriend. He had long since lost shame over staring; Patton was too beautiful to resist.
Remy was shaken out of his stupor when he felt the car pull over at the side of the road. He looked out the window, surprised to find absolutely nothing for miles ahead and behind them.
“Why are we stopping?”
Patton raised an eyebrow, “You can’t expect me to focus on driving when you’ve got your eyes on me like that.”
“Oh sorry, I-“
Remy’s sarcastic comment was cut off by Patton’s mouth. It took Remy’s slightly dazed mind a moment to realize he was being kissed. Obviously they had kissed before, but Remy never got tired of it. Patton was soft and slow and somehow reminded Remy of the pastel sky above them and it still was one of the most intense things Remy had ever had the honor to experience.
When Patton finally broke away, Remy was more lightheaded than before. He decided to blame it on the lack of oxygen because that was a lot less embarrassing than the truth.
Patton gave him a light shove and turned back into the lane, “Now go to sleep and stop distracting me.”
“Yeah. Yep. Definitely doing that.”
———————————————-
When Remy woke up again the sky was a deep indigo tinged with purple and the constant rumble of the car had stopped.
And Patton was leaning into his lap, planting a trail of kisses along his jawline.
Remy laughed, confused but not exactly disliking the experience, “What are you doing?”
“Waking you up,” Patton had taken a moment to wink at Remy but had since begun attacking his face again.
He glanced around, taking in the hotel parking lot they were parked in. The yellow fluorescent street lamps turned the late dusk purple. A moth bumped along the windshield after getting bored of their headlights. In front of them, a field stretched forward in that deep shade of green that you could only find in Midwestern summers.
“It’s beautiful here.”
Patton hummed from where he had migrated to Remy’s neck.
“Nearly as beautiful as you.”
Remy could feel Patton’s smile against his skin. He forced the other man to break away, softly gripping his chin and tilting his head up, “Want to go exploring with me?”
“Wouldn’t do it with anyone else,” Patton leaned forward to peck Remy on the lips once more before clambering out of the car and running off into the field.
Remy chuckled, watching his love for one more second before following through the dusky haze. He hoped Patton had already checked in with the hotel because it looked like it’d be a while before they were back.

Marble Heart
Hello! Here’s my entry for the @sandersidesbigbang and I’m so happy to finally get to share it with you! Thank you so much for letting me participate <3 <3 And thank you to my lovely beta @threecrowsinatrenchcoat for helping me out and @purplecrayonismine (logan and virgil art) and @just-a-pintrovert (virgil and roman art) for their lovely work <3
Summary:  Logan's never had any luck with love, instead choosing to devote himself to his work, but that doesn’t stop his heart for yearning for someone special. Roman, the God of Love himself, decides to do something to help him out. Modern day Galatea Au
Word count: 10,094
Pairings: Analogical and Sleepality
Warnings: None
AO3 link for ease of reading
Far above the mortal world sat paradise. There were lush green fields as far as the eye can see, with plenty of trees heavy with ripe fruit. Countless lakes and rivers with crystal clear waters that was the perfect temperature if one wanted to take a swim or dip their feet and relax. Every little want or desire was filled! It was wonderful, and perfect, and… boring. So incredibly boring. Roman was bored with having his every whim catered to.
He heaved out a sigh, throwing himself back on his rather comfortable chaise, body sinking into the soft, fluffy pillows. A hand reached up to brush his perfectly coiffed hair back into place and he let his eyes wander to his followers, talking, laughing, lounging around and enjoying their afterlife after spending their time on Earth devoted to him. He knew he really couldn’t, shouldn’t, complain. He has a good life. He’s had the best life since he came into being. But he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing.
He missed going down and walking among the living, hearing their stories and helping them with their struggles. It was so different down there, every day something new was happening. But as time went on, as humanity grew and developed, their faith and belief in him and his siblings diminished. Before he knew it, the trips down grew less and less frequent until none of them went down at all. He knew his brothers and sisters were content to stay with their faithful followers, but he craved adventure! Something new! And damn it all if he wasn’t going to do something about it!
Determination gripping his heart, Roman sat up abruptly, startling a group of girls seated next to him. He flashed a charming grin, earning some giddy giggles, and he turned, heading back inside his palace and making his way up to his room to start planning. It wouldn’t be easy to get down among the mortals as it once was, lack of faith and the gate being guarded would make it difficult. But where there was a will, there was a way, and he was always good at getting what he wanted. But first, he needed a plan. While spontaneity was kind of his forte, he felt like in this instance, the more he had figured out when he went down, the better his trip would be.
He hummed happily to himself as he made his down the halls, mind racing with the possibilities. He may not be completely up to date with what was happening down on Earth, but he knew enough. He’d just have to do what he did best! Spreading love and affection among the masses! He could spot a lonely heart a mile away, and he was confident that he can find anyone their perfect match, be it romantic or platonic. He could take a quick trip down, help some people, and be back before anyone really knew he was gone.
Now the real challenge was getting down there. He’d have to first sneak out past his father, make it down to the gate, and then get past the guard. He used to be able to sneak out with little to no problem when he was younger, but as the centuries go by, his old tricks slowly stopped working. There was a chance that since it’s been so long, he may just be able to squeak by with a trick he hasn’t used since he was young. Or… He paused, opening the door and seeing his brother digging in his closet. He could go with a more sure-fire distraction that was always guaranteed to work.
“Hey Remus… I need your help with something.”
Remus’ neck cracked with how fast his head spun around to look at him, and the grin stretching across his face left Roman feeling a little unsettled, but he knew he could count on him to help him out. And yeah, he’ll owe him later down the line, but this was his best bet. He just hoped he wouldn’t regret it.

— — — — — —
This was so stupid. This was by far the worst idea he’d ever come up with and Virgil had had a lot of bad ideas during his twenty-two years on this hell Earth. There had to be, like, rules against this, right? Sure, he and Roman were definitely more than “employee and customer” by now but that was technically still where they had started. The number of winking faces Roman had drawn on Virgil’s cups throughout the year had to mean something, though, right? God, he was thinking way too much about this.
The bell above the door into Java Nice Day rang as he entered, clearing his scattered thoughts and announcing his arrival to the barista that looked like he’d been anticipating Virgil’s appearance? he’d just been agonizing over.
The cafe was relatively empty but that was exactly what Virgil had been hoping for. He’d purposely decided to show up later than usual today, not keen on making his proposal (wait, no, not that word) to Roman in front of too many other people. Virgil could only assume Patton was in the back somewhere, taking care of paperwork or baking fresh pastries to refill the display cases.
“Stormcloud!” Roman greeted him happily, leaning just slightly over the counter as Virgil approached. “Missed your smiling face. Truly, the early birds are less fun to help when you aren’t here rolling your eyes behind their backs.”
Virgil couldn’t have resisted grinning at this even if he’d tried. “Yeah, sorry ‘bout that. Slept in.”
More like didn’t sleep at all, agonizing all night over how he’d word his request.
“Good. You deserve the extra rest!” The door to the kitchen swung open as Patton effortlessly joined the conversation. He carried a tray of baked goods with him and had decided apparently that he’d match his apron today with his pink hair. Virgil suspected tomorrow would be soft yellow.
“Mi amor, don’t tease him,” Roman responded, pressing a quick kiss to his queerplatonic partner’s cheek. “You’ll have to excuse Patton. Remy got to him first thing this morning.”
Patton squawked in protest but otherwise got to organizing the display, shooting Virgil a knowing smile as he did so.
“Your usual, then?” Roman offered.
“Oh,” Virgil blinked, snapping out of the panicked frenzy he’d found himself in at the impossible possibility of Patton knowing just exactly what Virgil had to ask Roman today. “Nah, uhm. Make me your favorite.”
“You already are.”
Patton barely stifled his giggle. Virgil didn’t do nearly as well, jaw dropping open and cheeks flushing red. Roman looked very much like a deer caught in the headlights.
“One caramel hot chocolate coming right up!” Patton chirped, grabbing the cup out of Roman’s hand, and hip checking him as he passed.
“Are you seeing anyone?” Virgil blurted.
“Uh.”
“No, wait, not like—” Like water from a faucet, the words came spilling out with no rhyme or reason. “I just mean, my parents. Christmas. Not an hour’s gone by where they haven’t texted me asking if I’m “bringing home anyone special” and it’s just really funny to me, that they think I have… I mean, not that I wouldn’t like to have… I mean, if I show up next week alone like I have for the past… Uh, years. Couple. Ever since… I’m just gonna go.”
Virgil was backing up before he’d even finished what ever the hell all of that had been. Why had he gone and mentioned his ex, no matter how briefly or vaguely? Why had he even shown up here today? Why had his stupid traitorous brain even given him this idea in the first place, as if it could ever possibly go well?
“Virgil, wait!”
A warm hand grabbed one of his and he flinched, not quite realizing how hard he’d (apparently) been dissociating. Reality slammed into him like a freight train and he blinked until his vision stopped being all fuzzy around the edges. Roman was holding his hand (Roman was holding his hand) and there was something in his eyes, something bright and confused and hopeful. Hopeful? Wait, what?
“When?”
Time was a funny thing.
The year leading up to Virgil bringing Roman home to his parents had been a roller coaster. From Virgil finding Roman’s upbeat attitude and positive outlook off-putting to Roman taking offense to Virgil talking down his favorite things to Patton finally nudging them in just the right direction. It turned out they had more in common than they thought and all it took was some patience to figure them out. Patton getting his boyfriend involved certainly helped; Remy was the no-nonsense sort and after seeing enough of Virgil and Roman’s antagonistic interactions, he’d promptly sat them at a table together and not let them leave until they found at least one thing to agree on. Afterwards, Virgil wouldn’t be surprised that it was Disney that did it.
Their fake relationship was about as fragile as an egg. Somehow, though, it wasn’t awkward. The banter came as easily as ever, something Virgil’s parents found endearing. Roman was physically affectionate and one would have an easier time finding a needle in a haystack than a moment where he wasn’t holding Virgil’s hands or playing with his hair. On the surface, it all really seemed very genuine. However, Virgil’s habit for self-sabotaging kept creeping up on him. Roman’s crippling self-esteem issues weighed heavy on his shoulders. Both of them wished and wanted and dreamed of more. The dinner would come and go but the feelings would linger, would plant roots, would grow and blossom and bloom.
“What if I blew it?”
Patton looked up from the laundry he was folding. Roman was staring at a sock, frowning.
“What’s that, honey?”
“You’ve had this sock for forever. You kept it all this time even though you lost the other one a long time ago. Even though it’ll never be a perfect match again, you still have it.”
“Yes?” Patton prompted.
“And… and sure, you can wear it with something else, because I know you don’t care about conformity, much less with clothes, and that’s really cute of you, have I ever said so?”
“You have,” Patton reassured, smiling.
“Okay. Good,” Roman exhaled, relieved. “Okay, good, great… but sometimes, there’s really just something about that perfect match. You know?”
“Mhm,” Patton agreed quietly, though he wasn’t sure if he really did know, at least not on the level Roman was trying to explain.
“I’m so happy with you,” Roman promised, piercing him suddenly with such an earnest gaze that Patton thought he might melt with the intensity of it. “I love you more than I could ever begin to show and…”
“And what, sweetpea?”
“I want… I want that with Virgil.” It was uttered so haltingly, barely a whisper.
“One more time?” Patton requested.
“With Virgil!” Roman seemed to burst, the floodgates breaking open. “I want him to know how important he is to me and… and to everyone that knows him! I want to remind him every day how loved and appreciated he is! When he laughs, I wish I had a bottle to catch it, and the way he smiles when he sees I’m the one behind the counter at work is like a rainbow after a storm, and his hands fit perfectly in mine, like a piece of a puzzle I didn’t even realize I was missing,” his voice caught, breath hitching. “Is… is that okay?”
Patton was there, wiping the tears from Roman’s cheeks before they could travel any further. “Oh, sugar, of course that’s okay!”
He pulled Roman in and shushed him as he cried, carding a hand through his hair. Any positive affirmation he could think of, he didn’t hesitate to murmur, reassuring Roman through every sob and hiccup and sniffle. Eventually, the emotions seemed to pass; it wasn’t even that they’d been necessarily bad, Patton figured, just sudden and overwhelming.
“So,” Patton began, giving Roman an encouraging smile. “How big a confession are you planning?”

Note
Lia I can't stop laughing thank you ( ˘ ³˘)♥ ( ˘ ³˘)♥ ( ˘ ³˘)♥ Can I get some Remy and/or Patton headcanons? (not necessarily romantic or even with them interacting, just headcanons about either of them) My day was fine but my evening has been Decidedly Not so far (except for like,, 5 minutes where my brain was like 'you look pretty! Okay, now it's time to feel like crying for no reason and have a song you don't like stuck in your head')
I’ll Fite your brain for you
Also I know I could have left them separate but,,,,,,,,,, sleepality
I acknowledge now that this is less hcs more an AU. Because apparently I’ m real bad with hcs. Sorry in advance.
Remy is Bad Boy. Nothing gets to him. He’s got shades inside and a leather jacket in any weather. He’s Aloof.
So, no, he isn’t blushing just because Patton waved at him. No, he’s not stumbling over his words because Patton giggled in a way that was too cute to be human. He is decidedly not completely swept off his feet just by Patton smiling softly, sweetly, happily at him.
Nope. Not at all.
Patton is just a happy-go-lucky boi who wants the world to smile with him!
He likes to bake, and he’ll often carry around whatever pastries he baked the night before to hand out to anyone who’ll take one!
He’s known throughout the school. He’s just so damn fluffy and sweet. He got lost on his way to class one time, stumbled into a back room where some of the school’s toughest kids (bullies) were smoking and doing other generally not school friendly things
He offered them his donuts while he smiled and apologized and asked for direction to room 304
He knew all their names, didn’t look annoyed or frightened, just embarrassed for getting lost
Since then he’s been more or less off-limits to be picked on; messing with him gets you ganged up on by EVERYONE
It’s a very good thing that Patton’s sugary sweet because he honestly has too much power in the school
They first ran into each other (literally) in a hallway during passing
Remy wasn’t paying attention to where he was going until suddenly there’s a warm body slamming into his and multiple things falling
He bends down because his sunglasses got knocked off, reaching around blindly, grabs them just as someone else does (so cliched, I know, shh), looks up with a huff of annoyance because he doesn’t have time for this bs-
Turns out? It isn’t bs
He knows Patton by sight, of course, everyone in the school does, but he’s never seen him properly, it seems
Patton is... Patton’s literally glowing, Remy has to think, how his cheeks are a bright, rosy, beautiful red and his skin is sun-kissed golden like he’s a treasure built by gods and his hair is curly and bouncy and light brown with streaks of light bright bouncing blue
Everything about Patton screams- no, it doesn’t scream, it energetically but lovingly tells you- living, loving, bouncy and free and amazing
Remy is star-struck- after all, the sun (who is currently kneeling, personified, in front of him) is a star
Patton laughs, and somehow his laugh glows to, is warm like fresh-baked cookies and easy smile, and apologizes, jokingly saying he needs to look where he’s going, pushing the shades back into Remy’s grasp as he collects his papers
Remy manages to come to his senses enough to help with the pick-up, which he normally would never do, shuffling the papers together as he tried not to look directly at Patton as he handed them back
Patton thanked him with a smile that could have melted the Artic and pressed a cupcake into his hand, the bright yellow frosting on top dashed with black streaks to form a simply perfect smiley face, before hurrying off to his class
Remy remained standing in the hallway, looking at the cupcake held in one hand, glasses clutched in his other hand, a stupid stupid smile quickly spreading across his face and stretching cheeks that were burning
He missed his class and he didn’t care
He had a problem to deal with
Cue: Remy suddenly realizing he sees Patton a lot more often than he thought, and now that he realizes he shares a school building with the sun, with the embodiment of sunshine, with an angel who came to walk among humans as the ultimate sacrifice and brought his halo with him- brought it in his grin and laugh and personality, brought it in his treats and the way he touched people even with just a moment shared- realizing that makes it a LOT HARDER to just ignore him
He’s the definition of a mess. His carefully crafted attitude of never-caring is falling to pieces in front of him. He needs to ignore Patton but... he doesn’t want to. Gods help him, Remy wants to chase that pile of fluff and chat with him as he walked to class and eat lunch with him and if he gets burned up in the other’s inhuman heat than it would be a beautiful way to go
It takes longer than it should for him to get over himself, weeks and nearly months of stumbling over everything he did while in Patton’s presence, to the point that pat probably thinks he’s a weirdo at this point, but finally Remy does it: he askes Patton if he can eat lunch with him. One time. One day. It’s small but it’s something and Remy needs something if he’s going to survive what he has quickly identified as a crush
The lunch is FANTASTIC- Patton is giggly and happy and fun to talk to, and Remy’s able to hold himself together just a little, if only to make this count; bantering with Patton with his snark, though it’s softer around Patton; sweeter, less condemning
When it’s over, he’s a little sad- but that’s okay. Remy ate lunch with Patton and it had been everything he could have hoped so, yep, he was good now, out of his system, this was definitely how crushes worked
Except... Patton found him out the next day, asking if they could eat lunch together again. And again. And again and again and again until they just ate lunch together, no questions, and sometimes on Wednesdays they ‘break’ into the school’s chem lab and Patton pulls ingredients out of his bag and they make mini treats while the chem teacher ‘doesn’t’ supervise and ‘doesn’t’ chuckle and roll his eyes when something inevitably sets on fire (Remy’s doing, always, not that anyone really minds)
(Yes the chem teacher is Logan)
And one day Remy’s chuckling as he helps Patton pat down the table he has, for the seventh time, managed to set on fire, and Patton runs out to get some paper towels from the bathroom (some batter spilled in the mess) and Mr. Logan says something like ‘this takes me back’
Remy: ‘oh, yeah? you burn a lot of tables in your youth, Mister?’
Logan: ‘not exactly, but... well, me and Virgil (aka Mr. Emo Weirdo, who has walked in on every single one of Logan’s classes at some point, mostly to offer wrong answers to questions that are at least half of the time poorly veiled flirts) used to break into the science classrooms and make rather dangerous concoctions when we were in high school. off dates, I suppose, but when young and in love...’
Remy: ‘...what’
The conversation falls into confused Logan saying that Remy and Patton are dating, yes, it’s exactly what it looks like...
Remy’s mortified. He’s not dating! That would be- well that would be great actually- but he’s not dating him! That’s... that’s impossible!! He’s not... Patton would never want him, sweet sweet Patton who shines bright enough to light the world, they can’t be dating, it would never happen
Before anything more can be said Patton’s back and everything’s back to normal... or is it?
Remy starts hanging out with Patton less, worried he’s sending bad signals, or taking advantage of the sunshine, or something
Tbh... Logan thinking they were dating, and him considering that as a reality... it was amazing. He had never been happier.
But Patton wouldn’t want him, it wouldn’t be right, so he had to move on before his heart got broken and it was all his damn fault
Patton’s upset, and worried. what changed? Why is Remy avoiding him? Did he say something?
Patton finally corners Remy and it all spills out. Remy admitted he’s been crushing since day one, that dating Patton would be... would be incredible, but Patton’s just his friend, that’s all they are, he’s sorry he got ahead of himself or acted too close or anything-
Patton’s been steadily getting closer to him as he speaks, Remy’s words coming out quicker the closer they are, until Patton’s right in front of him and Remy’s breath is caught in his throat but he has to pretend it isn’t because it isn’t fair
But then Patton...
‘can I kiss you?’
Remy says yes so quickly it’s almost as if he had seen the question coming
The kiss is... it’s warm as freshly baked brownies and as sweet as them, it’s softer than just-washed blankets and as lovely as the first lilies of spring
Most importantly it’s with Patton, both of them holding each other, arms having wrapped around the other at some point, secure and soft and warm and, because it’s with Patton, utterly perfect

Claws and Effect Ch.1
A/N: I’ve been planning this fic for a while now, so I’m super excited to share it aHH! Updates might be slow until Coral and Crowns is finished, but I finished this about a week ago and have lost all patience. This chapter is pretty slow, but things will pick up real soon, promise!
Next: Chapter 2
Summary: Becoming the superhero Morality wasn’t exactly Patton’s first choice of career, but he liked to think he’d been handling it well enough- balancing his alter ego and regular day job at his cousin’s cafe. That is, until a familiar face walks into Sanders Delights, and a mysterious new villain appears soon after.
Pairings: Romantic logicality, Platonic Sleepality
Words:  3,703
Warnings: None
Cross his heart and seal it with a pinkie promise, Patton was not falling asleep on the job. No sir, not he! He was just...trying to very slowly blink the dryness out of them.
“Patton?” Patton’s head snapped up and he turned to face Thomas, who was wiping one of the counters with a quirked brow.
“Stay up too late watching Parks and Rec again?” Thomas laughed. Patton laughed along with him, refilling the napkin dispenser.
“You know me, Thomas,” Patton said brightly, feeling the amusement rolling off Thomas in steady, soft waves. Patton hated lying, but he technically didn’t. Lie, that is. Thomas did know him. He just happened to be wrong about Patton’s nightly pastimes. His ribs still ached dully from where an unruly gang member had decided to kick him.
“Sure do, Pat,” Thomas’s gaze flicked up at the sound of the bell above the door jinggling merrily. “Though, I think someone knows you even better.” He gestured towards the man who had just walked in, decked in a leather jacket, messenger bag, and dark sunglasses- an iced coffee dangling losely from one hand.
“REM!” Patton shouted, suddenly very awake. He launched himself over the counter- a shock to Thomas apparently- and threw himself in his arms. Remy chuckled warmly, contentedness, affection, and love bubbling around Patton.
“What’re you doin here, kiddo?” Patton asked, walking over to let himself back behind the counter, inviting Remy along as well. “I doubt it’s more coffee, as you said the aesthetic of Starbucks outranks even the actually good tasting stuff we make at Sanders Delights.”
“Mmmm, yeah, you’re right as always Patty,” Remy took a sip of the coffee he did have, placing it on the counter, “I came for two reasons. The first: I need a job.” Patton blinked, feeling Thomas’s confusion as well.
“Why? What happened with your last job I thought you loved it,” Patton said, worry churning in his gut. Remy offered him a soft chuckle, ruffling his carmel curls.
“I did, kinda. I got fired for ahem,” Remy made air quotes, “‘misusing and tampering with dangerous equipment.’” He scoffed, crossing his arms, “Like, if you didn’t want me using the equipment, then don’t make it so easily accessible. So, yeah, you got a job opening or two?” he turned to Thomas who thought.
“Well, we are always open to hiring family. Wait...why two?” Remy shrugged nonchalantly.
“My buddy Helen quit, a little before I got fired actually. She’s been lookin’ for a job. She’d have most of the same qualifications as me, y’know?” Thomas bit his lip, thinking.
“Well a couple kids won’t be working here much longer since they’re graduating so I suppose...”
“Awesome, thanks TomTom, love ya! I’m stealing my lil bro now though, bye-bye,” Remy, grabbed Patton by the arm and started to drag him away.
“Wh- Remy, I have opening shift starting in ten minutes. You can’t just take the only other person working!” Thomas protested. Patton pulled his arm away with a laugh.
“Yeah, sorry Rem. I’m actually currently employed.”
“Wow, okay, first, I’m wounded. Second: can I at least take you into the back? I need to show you something, like right now. Or I will die. And then you’d lose me. Which would suck, Patton.” Patton giggled, feeling the light teasing bounce across his skin.
“That sounds fine, right Thomathy?” Patton turned to Thomas. He sighed, equally dramatic, and leaned against the wall.
“I suppose I can live without my best barista/cashier for five minutes,” he said, throwing a wink at the two. Patton laughed and Remy saluted, dragging Patton into the back room. It was small and cramped- clearly not meant for being more than a storage room. Despite this fact, a rickety old card table and a couple beanbags were tossed on the floor for employees who wanted a quick break between rushes. Remy threw himself down into one of the beanbags and rifled through his bag.
“So, what is so so important you had to show me right now?” Patton asked, plopping down in the beanbag across from his brother. Remy grinned sharply, excitement and mischief sparking and poking at Patton as Remy pulled out what appeared to be a strip of fabric.
“Tada! It’s a new mask,” Remy tossed it to Patton, who caught it with one hand.
“What’s wrong with my old mask?” Patton asked, looking for eyeholes and finding none. Remy scoffed, taking another sip of his coffee.
“Patty Patt, you got real noticeable eyes. We’re lucky no one has caught a closeup view of you on camera yet. Plus, with this one you can’t skimp out on putting in contacts, and I think that’ll help with your glasses budget” Patton blushed, studying the mask again.
“So...how am I supposed to see out of this?” Patton asked. Smugness danced across his skin as Remy leaned forward, removing Patton’s glasses and tying the mask around his face like a blindfold. Somehow, Patton could still see through (well, see as well as he could without glasses or contacts), with only a slightly dark tint to everything blocking his vision.
“Woah, how did you manage this?” Patton asked, flexing his fingers. Even though the fabric was light, the clarity of what he was seeing was still quite impressive. Remy shrugged, but that smugness was still there.
“Lotsa coffee and a couple late nights. You’re welcome,” Remy pulled a notepad out of his bag and made a few checks, “Only 36 left.”
“Oh no, how will I live when you run out of owed favors,” Patton deadpanned, taking the mask off and shoving it in his apron pocket  while he slid his glasses back on. The prodding teasing was back as Remy slung an arm across Patton’s shoulders.
“You won’t. I’m going to kill you,” Remy pinched Patton in the side, causing him to squeal, “zap zap you’ve been tased.”
“No tasing allowed! Sanders Delights is a safe zone,” Remy playfully smacked his forehead.
“Ah, how could I forget?”
“That’s one extra favor- you’re back to 37.”
“What? Boo!” Remy shoved Patton’s shoulder as they exited the back room. Patton froze, the air around him crackling. His skin began to crawl and itch and prickle and tingle and burn and freeze. He looked up slowly to see the cafe already had a large amount of patrons present.
“There you are!” Thomas said, making a latte, “we got really busy the second you left and- Patton are you alright?” Patton shook his head, attempting to clear the cobweb feeling of emotions clinging at him.
“Y-yeah. Just gimmie a sec,” Patton had to mentally shove away the worry gnawing at him coming from Remy’s direction as he breathed in through his nose. He breathed out slowly, focusing on himself- his ears to be specific. When switching to his enhanced hearing, it always felt like his ears popped. The sound seemed to go from muffled to unbearably loud. The sudden cacophony was almost as bad as the sticking, itching, burning, freezing feeling of emotions all around, but as Patton found a target of focus, the difference was immeasurable.
“Journalism just ain’t working huh?” he let his focus be on a couple of girls on the opposite end of the cafe, the other sounds muffling in comparison.
“Ugh, it’s just so dishonest. I swear if I have to do one more phony story I’m gonna lose it,” the woman stabbed her straw into her drink. Patton closed his eyes and let his hearing slowly trickle back into empathy, trading sounds for emotions. The feeling was much less intense now that he was expecting it. The whole ordeal felt to him like it took an obnoxiously long amount of time, but considering everyone just went along with it, he assumed it was in actuality much closer to thirty seconds.
“Okay, sorry about that!” Patton trotted over to Thomas, who simply shrugged, and kept making his order. He and Patton fell into a steady rhythm for a few minutes before Thomas spoke up again.
“Wanna train your brother? Since we’re hiring him and all that,” Thomas scribbled a name on the cup in his hands while Patton bagged a doughnut- subtly trying and failing to lick the glaze off his fingers without being caught.
“Sure!” he said, turning to Remy and bumping shoulders with him. Remy snickered and menacingly reached his fingers out to brush Patton’s sides. Patton squirmed and stifled his giggles with a half-hearted glare before diving in.
Another few minutes, and the rush had died down notably. Remy seemed to quite easily get the hang of making coffee and bagging pastries, so Patton let him genuinely help out a little with Thomas’s okay. It wasn’t the most thrilling job, but Patton figured if Remy wanted excitement he should’ve cared more about keeping his previous job.
Patton, lost in his thoughts to help fight off the monotony of his job, startled at the bell above the door announcing a new arrival. The cup he’d been holding jumped from his grasp and tumbled onto the floor, rolling away from him. If Patton were the type to swear, he would’ve just then as he got down on his hands and knees to chase after the darned thing.
He was so focused, he hardly heard the customer’s smooth, monotone voice as he ordered from Thomas. Patton paused a second, swearing it was a voice he’d heard before. He shrugged it off, however, because it wasn’t uncommon for people to come in multiple times, even if they weren’t regulars. Patton finally succeeded in retrieving the cup, making a victorious sound in the back of his throat.
“And your name?” Thomas asked.
“Logan,” the man said. Patton jolted up suddenly, slamming his head on the counter and letting out a strangled hiss. He looked up, rubbing the back of his head, and saw Remy pull his shades down a hair.
“Hooooooly sh-” Patton pinched Remy’s leg, making him yelp. “I was gonna say holy, uh, sharks. Yup,” Remy said, popping the p before he took his shades off the rest of the way, green eyes like fire, “Logan Lehrer?”
“That would be correct. Do I know you?” Patton definitely recognized Logan now, as he could sense the strange, muffled buzzing against his skin. Patton never could figure out how his emotions were so dulled down to the point he could hardly pick them up, a factor that had drawn him to the other time and again during high school. He couldn’t dwell on his newfound wonder, however, because Remy was looking down at Patton, a wolfish grin on his face as he slid his sunglasses back up his nose. Patton shook his head wildly.
“Ohhh my God, gurl, you don’t remember?” Patton knew Remy was probably fluttering his lashes as mischief began poking at Patton once more, “I was the annoying one who asked you way too many personal questions that one time you had a project with my brother!” This was the first time Patton was hearing about this and he glared up at his brother from where he was still crouched, vowing revenge and a very lengthy lecture on privacy.
“Oh. Remy,” Patton felt clear annoyance break through the dull buzz, scratching down his arms. He winced, but was glad it wasn’t as extreme as it was when he felt it from other people, “Of course you work here.”
“Nah, I don’t quite yet,” Remy started making Logan’s order, dodging around Patton as he did so, “this is free labor, baby.”
“Right,” Remy set the drink down and put his elbows on the counter, raising his eyebrows. “Speaking of your brother, though, how is Patton?” Patton’s legs were getting tired from being crouched for so long, and Thomas was giving him questioning glances from where he was standing.
“Well,” Remy’s hand landed at the base of Patton’s neck, bunching the fabric of his shirt in a fist, “why not ask him yourself?” Remy yanked up, and for the five seconds before Patton was still blissfully hidden he managed a tiny internal mantra of please don’t still be hot, please don’t still be hot, please don’t still be hot.
Gosh. Darnit.
Logan blinked his warm, golden brown eyes in shock that was like sudden static against Patton’s skin as he adjusted his glasses. The shock melted back, but Patton could hardly care as his internal functions were all screaming abort abort, still hot! Still hot!
“Patton? What were you doing under the counter?” Logan asked. Patton coughed, holding out the styrofoam cup he had been chasing after when Logan first entered.
“Dropped this!”  Good start, good start, Now, play it cool, Sanders, “Soooo. We have the same glasses?” Nailed it.
Logan gave another surprised blink before narrowing his eyes at Patton.
“You would be correct. Odd, did you have those frames back in high school?”
“Uhhhh,” Patton looked to his brother for assistance, who shook his head slightly, “No?” Patton had never hated not being able to feel Logan’s emotions clearly more than he did in that moment, as Logan arched one of his stupid, perfect eyebrows and leaned against the counter.
“You sound unsure. Do you honestly not recall if you’ve bought new frames since then?” Logan asked. Patton opened his mouth then paused. Because he suddenly remembered-
“This is my fifth pair in the last month. I lose track.”
“What? Patton, how do you break five pairs of glasses in a month?”
Don’t say beating up bad guys, don’t say beating up bad guys, don’t say-
“I am just. So, clumsy,” Patton put his palms flat against the counter, staring at it in mild horror. Remy sympathetically patted his back and slurped the last of his coffee loudly.
Patton was saved from further embarrassment when the bell rang again and Remy let out a loud gasp, soft, featheriness coming from him as he darted around Patton and threw himself into the arms of the man who just walked in. Said man looked extremely done despite having only just arrived as he curled his arms around Remy, who planted a loud, obnoxious kiss on his cheek.
“Hey Ethey-pooh,” it was slightly mocking, but fond. The man rolled his eyes.
“I despise you.”
“Love you too! Come to see me at work? You’re the bestest,” Remy climbed out of his boyfriend’s arms, and Patton watched him warily. Ethan Serpent was a notorious liar, and known to occasionally swipe small objects. Patton didn’t really like him (which was saying something- he liked everyone), but he made Remy happy, so he kept his complaints to a minimum.
Ethan lounged against the counter, ignoring everyone as Patton focused his gaze back on Logan. He was looking above Patton’s head, brows furrowed. Patton turned to see Logan was watching the television they kept above the counter for people to watch if they wanted. The audio was off, but subtitles were on. A reporter (Patton thought it might be one of the women he saw earlier, actually) was shown, her lips moving slightly off from the words at the bottom of the screen.
“In recent news, the hero dubbed Morality has recently aided in taking down the gang the…” the woman squinted “babbling baboons? Police and Scientists still marvel at the strength, speed, and abilities of flight this superhero displays.”
“Fascinating,” Logan breathed, another precious emotion breaking through the cloud and washing across Patton. Wonder, pure and clean. Patton was probably sweating, so he ducked his head and scrubbed a little more aggressively than necessary at the counter.
“Oh. Him. That’s no big deal,” Patton let out a hysterical little laugh, “guy showed up a few months ago and beat up some criminal who was trying to rob a couple. It just so happened the boyfriend of the lady he assaulted was a vlogger or something so, uh. Yeah. I’m surprised you haven’t heard of him yet.”
“Oh, I moved out of state for college. I only came back because a job offer was given to me about a month or so ago, and the local news has not exactly been my top priority.”
“Nor social interaction, if you haven’t heard any gossip about Mr. Morality,” Remy called from where he was running his hands across the chest of Ethan’s yellow sweater.
“Stop having eye sex in my cafe,” Thomas said, carrying a sack of sugar out from the back. Remy pouted, folding his arms and scrunching his nose.
“So. A real life superhero, huh? I wonder how his powers came to be. Also, where did he get the costume? And why is it cat themed- that seems rather silly.”
“Hey! That costume is awesome, excuse you,” Remy said, leaning against Ethan, who looped an arm across his shoulders.
“You have excellent tastes,” Ethan informed Logan. Remy beamed.
“See? Ethan agrees with me,” Remy curled a hand around the back of his neck and tilted his head down to kiss him.
“You two are repulsive,” Logan deadpanned, turning back to Patton. Remy huffed.
“You won’t be saying that when you get a boyfriend, Logan,” Remy said. Logan ignored him.
“Well, I best be off then. It was a pleasure to see you again, Patton. Can not say the same for your brother.” Patton laughed, and, in a moment of impulsiveness Patton was quite well known for, he stopped Logan from leaving by reaching over the counter and hooking onto his arm.
“W-wait!” Logan turned, and Patton turned pick as he raised one of his stupid perfect eyebrows again. “I, uh, want my phone number?” Logan blinked, a softness growing around the edges of his emotional buzz.
“I would not be opposed to that.” Patton scribbled his number on Logan’s coffee cup, handing him a small bag with a doughnut in it.
“For luck, y’know?” Logan’s smile was soft.
“Thank you, Patton.”
~~~
Patton really, really needed to lay off the sweets. He grunted as he struggled to yank on one of his boots. One would think running around 6 out of 7 nights a week would help him lose weight, but apparently not.
He really hated how thick his calves were, especially now. He didn’t want to wear his crocs either, because he was pretty sure they would fall off if he needed to fly at all. Along with that, Remy had informed him he was probably one of the last people on earth who wore them because they were a, quote, “fashion disaster”. Plus, his pair had cute little jibbitz that looked like cookies, cats, dogs, and rainbows, so someone would probably find it suspicious if the renowned hero Morality had the same crocs as the culinary arts major who worked at the little cafe in the heart of the city.
Grunting, Patton finally managed to get the dumb thing on, only to realize he had yet to put on the other one. He sighed, wedging his foot into it after much trial and error. He stood up, walking in small circles to adjust, before heading over to the mirror in front of his door. He ran a hand through his curls, trying to tame them somewhat before he pulled up his hood. He couldn’t suppress a giggle as he fiddled with the ears on the top. Of all the costume designs to get stuck as his brand, Patton was glad it was the cat. He tied on his mask, looking at himself one last time. Remy was right, he looked way different when his eyes weren’t visible.
Taking a deep breath, he turned and walked to the window, slowly opening it and looking around. No one in sight. Good. Patton pulled himself up onto the window sill, nearly purring as the wind whipped around his face, making his cape flap around him. He leapt into the air, feeling his flight take effect as he floated up and landed lightly on top of one of the buildings.
Patton stared out across the city. There was something about being a hero that Patton loved, even when he wasn’t helping people in the moment. Just the rush of knowing what was to come. It made Patton feel just a little bit braver.
With a grin, Patton thundered across the roof and leapt into the air. His stomach dropped, and it felt like the world was going in slow motion even as his heart rate increased. Then, the moment was over as his feet made contact with the top of the next building. Call him an adrenaline junkie, but there were worse things to get high on.
He landed in a crouch after a couple more rooftops, taking a moment to catch his breath. Sweat dripped down his forehead, and he stood up straight to wipe it off. He looked up, seeing the tallest building in town a little ways ahead. Patton flew up towards it, landing on the top and gripping the lightning rod, hanging over the edge and scanning the town. This was his favorite place to perch and look for trouble, as it gave him a great overhead view. Patton did wish one of his powers was super vision, but he guessed his ears would have to do.
Patton let his super hearing take over, scanning across town. A group of teenagers here, a few drunk guys there (he’d keep an ear on them), but nothing terribly out of the ordinary. Patton sometimes wished there was more interesting stuff happening, but he would immediately scold himself and remind himself that boring was good. Boring meant no one was getting hurt.
Patton was just about to give up and start just doing his regular patrol, when there was an explosion from the outskirts of the city. He jolted, the sound rattled around in his skull, making his head throb painfully. He couldn’t even tell if it had really been loud, or if his super hearing just made it seem that way. Maybe both? Either way it was still more excitement then he’d seen in months.
Despite the guilt and worry gnawing at his heart, he couldn’t help the tiniest smile from curling on his lips.
“Alright then, let’s go.”
