This entire scene leading up to the kiss. Agatha reaching for Rio's face, the vulnerability Rio shows in that moment as she stares into her eyes. Rio's gaurd is down in this moment because the woman that she loves is finally returning to her arms after centuries of being apart. THIS version of them, falling back into the muscle memory of their love will forever be my roman empire.

Just in general I think trying to look to pre-late modern period history for validation of LGBT+ identities is an absolutely useless venture. Every single underlying human experience defined through the lens and framework of LGBT identity has always existed, but it's impossible to pin down Exactly who and what a figure might have been if they existed in this contemporary context and decided to self identify via these labels.
It's also a wildly reductive lens that flattens the complexity and variety of how sex and gender has been constructed across time in different cultures, how sexual norms have varied, etc. This is not a constructive approach to learn about history and you're never going to be able to fit historical figures neatly into little identity categories.
#I think people really really really need to get it through their heads that LGBT+ identities exist largely as an interaction with#mostly western gender norms and VERY specifically in our contemporary context and these labels do not objectively describe#innate underlying qualities neatly applicable to and distinctly separated in all contexts#Like there have always been men attracted to/who have sex with the people defined as men in their culture but that description#is not Always going to neatly match up to how you conceptualize 'being gay'#Or like. WRT the 'I will sodomize and facefuck you' poem. I saw people just absolutely WILDLY missing the point of it#at its face value of a man describing engaging in sex acts with other men and it's like. the message here is 'you are accusing me#of effeminacy and I am rhetorically threatening to exert my masculine dominance over you via penetrative rape to show you#who the real effeminate man is'. Like most people clearly at least got the message that it's intended to be insulting but like#it's not just that. It is straight up Normative Roman Masculinity (albeit notably aggro) and is not implying actual interest in sex#with men in a recognizably 'gay' sense#See also most arguments over 'was this '''woman who disguised herself as a man''' a trans man/lesbian/cishet woman escaping misogyny'#like YOU WILL NEVER FUCKING KNOW. JUST REFER TO THIS PERSON HOW THEY WANTED TO BE REFERRED TO AND STOP ARGUING#I think there's a very understandable drive to look to history to say 'see? we've always been here' but the mistake is trying to do that#for SPECIFIC identities defined in HIGHLY SPECIFIC AND CLEARLY SEPARATED ways.#Rather than as proof that yeah the western cis/heteronormative conceptualization of what sexuality/gender is and should be has#never been right and people who diverge from this (and from other cultural gender/sexual norms) have always existed

I find it so weird that people try to deny that queerphobia as it exists in the west is rooted in Christianity. Like, people are literally more focused on not offended the pope than they are protecting queer life.
Remember that there was no queerphobia in the western world before the Christianization of Rome. Caesar being made fun of for being a bottom isn't the same as the queerphobia we see spanning from the late Roman empire to the present day. The first person on earth to outlaw gay male relationships was the byzantine emperor Justinian. The first writing to circulate in the west to talk against homosexuality was the Bible. The systemic cultural and legal marginalization of queer identities is directly tied to Christianity and still is, from Rome, to northern Europe, to Africa (it should be mentioned that the most queerphobic nation on the planet right now had a openly bi king before colonialism) and the Americas, we see that the introduction of queerphobia and the introduction of Christianity are one and the same.
Also when you try to deny that queerphobia comes from Christianity you basically have to claim that people are just naturally queerphobic, which is not only something not back up by history but implies the oppression queer people face is inevitable.

(Headcanon: rangi has exes)
Kyoshi: how are you so good at this?
Rangi: Kyoshi, I'm a 5'9 sei'naka woman who went to an ALL GIRLS academy for SIX YEARS. I've had experience, you're not my first one
Kyoshi: im not??
Rangi: you didn't know?
Kyoshi: no, so you have.. an ex?
Rangi: two, to be exact. along with many other passing crushes, but They were only shallow, temporary love, most barely lasted a month. I was young and simply exploring my interests.
Rangi: but it was hard to put my attention onto romance with priorities and honor on the line, that and also my mother's reputation dawning on me, i always tried to keep my personal life hidden but, well, people found out, it spread to the whole school, it was- a terrible time.
Kyoshi: ...i had no idea
Rangi: its not a story i like to tell people, My past romantic experiences.. it never ends well. but you, kyoshi, your case is different, its like i've finally fallen in love for the first time.
-----------------------------------------
i love them. anyways yea ive always thought about the fact that rangi really enrolled in a fire nation all-girls school. we all know hei-ran is okay with LGBTQ but we can't say the same for every other fire nation person, especially the competitive honor-bound students.
Rangi's a lesbian, she'd probably have crushes throughout the years she enrolled in the academy, at one point she'd probably even gotten as far as to date some, but the overall homophobic environment really makes it hard for her to dedicate herself, that, and she partially also doesn't want to sacrifice her training/grades for someone she likes. in any and all cases, she will prioritize herself first before her past lover.
However, with kyoshi. its not like that. No its not just because she's bound as the avatar's bodyguard. Rangi fell first, at first she expected it to just be another passing, shallow crush like how she used to, but no. They spent a lot of time together, covering eachother's backs, supporting eachother, it was mutual.
this was when rangi realized that Love remains an unfamiliar territory to the firebender. How Rangi would without a doubt sacrifice herself for kyoshi, go out of her way just to make sure kyoshi takes care of herself, she would run miles just to see her, to check up on her. all the sudden, kyoshi became a big part of her life.
And when they became lovers, Rangi couldn't be happier, she finally understood love stories and fairy tales like the tale of two dragons. back then she would think it is stupid to care for someone else before yourself, or go to such treacherous bounds in the name of love, but now she understands.
This is, Rangi's side of the story.

This scene right here, after Agatha lashes out in anger and says she never wants to see Rio again. There's a brief moment as she watches her walk away that you can see how hurt she is. Agatha's expecting Rio to put up more of a fight. I don't think she ever wanted her to agree and that's what shocked her the most. Because she knew that once Rio gave up on them it's really over. Kathryn Hahn's acting right here, the expressiveness of her eyes says all we need to know.
