an institution as old as the roman legion was going to need time to change. lots of time. maybe more time than frank had to give. there was pushback to each and every one of his reforms, and it did not matter how well written his speeches were, or how thoughtful his changes were meant to be. there was always going to be someone who thought he was desecrating the very foundations of the legion itself.

there were about a hundred reasons why a group of ancient and old-fasioned senators might not want to listen to him. he was chinese, trans, had ancestors that were responsible for some serious roman no-no's, and had a base level understanding of the internet (the source of all evil).

but frank was relentless. he wanted nothing but the best for his people now that he was meant to lead them. he would protect the young ones. he would do away with cruel tactics and traditions. he would make the legion something to be proud of.

that did not mean it was easy.

when jason visited, frank was beyond ecstatic. it was great to see an old friend again, particularly one as understanding as jason grace. when they had slipped away from the rest of the legionnaires, lounging in the praetor's office alone, frank found himself ranting more than he had meant to.

they're old, and they're stubborn, and they would run this legion into the ground if it meant maintaining tradition!

jason's promise caught frank off guard, and his lip trembled briefly before he bit down on it to keep his composure.

"jason, i- that means a lot, especially coming from you. i really can't tell you how good it is to hear you say that." frank let out a breath, smiling at his friend with all the warmth he could muster. so I just went on a really fascinating rabbit hole on historical hair dye-warning for some disgusting cosmetic methods (this is also way longer than I though it would be but I got very fascinated by the topic)

as for going blonde:

during the roman empire, prostitutes were actually required to have blonde hair and it is through analysis of this that we have most of the early information of hair coloring. wigs were used, which obviously doesn’t help answer our question, but there was also a method of burning certain plants and nuts and using the ashes to lighten hair colors.

now we get into gross stuff. in the modern day if you have dark hair that you are dyeing pretty much any color (aside from specific circumstances) you are absolutely 1000% going to need to bleach it. Great!! modern science has created safe synthetic bleach that is specifically for use in hair. however this was only created in the later twentieth century when hollywood popularized light colored hair.

prior to the invention of what we modern humans know as bleach, people still needed to bleach things (leather used a bleaching process, as did cloth/thread, and of course it was used in cosmetics) so, you might ask, what did people use as bleach?? the answer is urine (human or animal) as it contains natural ammonia in it, which is one of the primary ingredients in bleach. (one of the most disgusting methods I discovered was used was putting the ashes of the crushed up plants and nuts together with literal bird poop to create a paste and then peeing on it. I almost gave up here😭)

later in the elizabethan era in england blonde and red hair was popular. blonde was achieved by using cumin seeds, saffron, and oil and celandine. this method was wildly expensive though.

one doctor in the 1600s successfully used straight up acid to dye hair blonde but that was wildly unsafe so for a long time women just started wearing wigs.

it wasn’t until 1856 that hair coloring became popular again and it was due to the invention of the first synthetic dye, which was the purple shade called Mauvine

once again though, this does not help alastair as it is not until 1920 that true blonde hair was achieved with synthetic dyes, and even through the mid twentieth century it was sometimes an outright dangerous venture because of the unsafe nature of the chemicals.

as for going back to black:

originally, black was the most popular choice for dyeing hair, primarily to cover the signs of aging, as well as for women to distinguish themselves from prostitutes. ancient Egyptians actually used henna to cover gray hairs, and during the same time greeks and later romans used various plant extracts. these extracts were highly toxic though so one method also used was fermenting leeches (like the actual animal) in a lead container for several months. (ew) henna was probably the most popular during ancient times, but berries and crushed nutshells could also be used to darken hair tones

wikihow suggests using henna or indigo powder mixed with coffee ground to get a black color, but it also says that this wouldn’t get lighter colored (such as blonde) hair dark enough. henna is definitely the most historically accurate and it seems that the common consensus is that it was the most reliable method.

it is important, however to note a few things historically here.

1. aside from the ancient egyptians covering gray hairs, men rarely used unnatural hair color. in the western world men used powder and pomade (as well as wigs) to keep hair clean and presentable during the 17th and 18th centuries, which is the closest the modern world came to popular modifications for men’s hair.

2. since women were the primary targets of hair dye, it was generally incredibly ornamental and not very practical. there was a trend in the 18th century of pastel hairstyles, often using wigs, and for the past three centuries before alastair was dyeing his hair, styles achieved notoriety through shape as opposed to color.

3. by the time alastair was dyeing his hair, unnatural colors weren’t popular at all really. natural styles were coming back into popularity in all aspects of fashion, and since women were the only people who ever dyed their hair and the styles didn’t demand it at all it would have been incredibly hard to find access to any of it.

4. it is important to remember that alastair dyed his hair to appear more eurocentric like his father. with how racist and classist the western world was at this time there was absolutely no reason for white europeans, especially the english, to have the necessary products to appear more ideal accessible for those they didn’t want to benefit from the eurocentric society.

tldr: if alastair wanted to bleach his hair he would have had to do some pretty disgusting stuff to it (or I found another suggestion that said using something highly acidic like lemon or lime could work!! all hope may not be lost lol) and to dye it back to black his best bet was henna or a similar plant based stain!

Later a new door appeared in the light sides mind palace, emitting the scent of iron for about a day, and occasional small hums, as if the owner was humming or singing.

Suddenly after a week of the door's ominous presence, a voice echoed enticingly from the strange door, as if to only serve as a siren song.

The light sides sat downstairs talking, then listening to the voice. Their only comments being positive, unlike later comments aimed towards this side.

Lyrics flowed from the dark side's mouth, little did he know the light sides were listening. After the singing stopped Patton knocked on the new side's door, surprising the new side.

"We heard your singing and thought it sounded nice!"

"'Kay you can leave now, you probably don't want me around.

Nox wears an interesting assortment of shitty clothes you could probably find at hot topic in the scene section but only if you excavated it from a 100 year old dumpster and then hit it with your car. she loves wearing yellow but needs to wear darker colors to sneaky better. she’s a thief at heart and half her clothes are either cut up with a knife to help with the summer heat or stitched together to help with the windy winters

she’d describe her style as one that gets the job done. 

Bai

Bai wears a sort of neo-ming dynasty style. A lot of the clothing is very flowy and reminiscent of one of the last great chinese empires back when their culture was “without corruption”. a political fashion that evolved from Beijing specifically to raise national pride post war as part of their cultural growth efforts. her favorite colours are soft blues accented with purples.

she would describe her style as elegant and modest.

NotBa

NotBa wears patched up clothes, often pieces of his old peace corps uniform that are well worn and soft he has a sweater that he absolutely loves to death. Cable knit and comfortable as all hell. he’s almost always wearing his Kippa and tzitzit. his favorite colours are dark green and cream colours

he would say his style is a reminder to him about his past and his promises for the future. except his sweater. he fuckin loves that sweater

Massa

Massa wears clothes that are more so something you might find in the 90′s dull pinks, blues and purples accented with her turquoise scarf that she pulls up for prayer. she often wears pull over fleecy sweaters with a zipper that ends around her chest. you know the one.

She would describe her style as functional but colorful

Hansen

Hansen wears yoga capris he stitched pockets on to create cargos. that’s all you need to know about him. he is horrible and every day I have to spend thinking about him is a day robbed from me.

He would say he has the best style. functional, comfortable and unique.

The Twins

Bigs wears a worn out backwards baseball cap (cause she is a cool 90′s kid and a little bby buch lesbian) almost always while rocking that good old blue rainboots, shorts, sweater combo. Lil’ has a hair clip with a plastic flower on it (again think 90s for these kids) she at least tucks her zip off cargo pants into her pink rainboots but makes up for her common sense by leaving her coat tied around her waist almost always so she’s running around in a tank top all the time. Bigs loves wearing blues and darker colours while Lil’ loves pinks and softer colours.

they would both say their styles suit them just fine and if you have anything to say about it they don’t care.

Alma

Alma loves flowy skirts and stripes, she often wears a striped long sleeved shirt paired with a tea length skirt and work boots. she often wears thermal leggings to fight off the cold because of this but she doesn't care. she feels cute. she loves to wear soft and light greens and darker colors or black. a pencil is almost always tucked into her braids and if she hasn’t already added pockets to her outfit she’s wearing her pocket belt. made from an old army jacket.

She would discribe her style as not very practical but pretty.

Pegan

Pegan learned how to sew as a child and oh my god. you can tell. think punk queer trash meets high fashion but make it functional. They love to take formal wear rip it apart and add fishnets or a tear away skirt or just mix men's and women's fasion. They are a drag performer after all. Pegan also wears heavy heavy makeup most of the time to help fool the facial recognition technology littered throughout the city.

They would discribe their style as incredibly practical and calculated. Everything they wear has a reason

Glitch

Glitch wears a lot of black accented with neon blues. Think scene but also hacker geek chic and you have glitch. Zei also have to make a lot of zeir clothes comfortable to wear while using a chair and Pegan is usually more then happy to help.

Zei would discribe zeir style as being very fasion and not to much function. Zei are all about the aesthetics

Camp

Camp wears a lot of loose clothing especially pants but prefers a tighter shirt. turtle necks are also a big thing in his wardrobe even if it's a sleeveless one.

He has no idea how to discribe his style he's blind. Comfortable for him and it makes all the wrong people uncomfortable which is just a bonus to him.

So the gardens have a main path that runs from the Obelisk to the Neues Palais. You can see it on Google maps, it’s called Hauptalle:

The theme of this path is that when walking from the Obelisk to the Neues Palais, one is meant to see around them the progression of human civilisation. The Obelisk represents Ancient Egypt, it’s inscribed with fake hieroglyphics (which is its own problem. But to be fair, hieroglyphics weren’t translated yet. But would the effort really be made even if they were?):

Here’s where it gets bad: Fritz, when designing the path wanted to communicate that humanity doesn’t only progress forward, some people regress back to “primal” states, that humanity has ups and downs. It’s a fair message, a cautionary tale for the people of Prussia, but I think that by my use of the word “primal” you can see where this is going…

This is offensively named the “Mohrenrondell” (Moor Rotary) or “the M-Wort Rondell” (M-word Rotary). It shows, in typical 1700s Western European fasion, the humans who have “fallen back” in the advancements of society. Not only is it presenting Black people as a lesser culture, its name contains a slur. There was a debate among scholars in 2014 on whether or not to rename the rotary. It was eventually decided not change its name.

That’s the basic gist of it. Here’s a great article written by heritage scholar Martin Odote on his feelings towards the busts and why he believes they should not be renamed or removed. And here’s an interview by Postcolonial Potsdam (an amazing group please look through their website! I’m still salty about scheduling not letting me take one of their tours when I was there…) with scholar Oduor Obura and why he believes they should be renamed and replaced. As African-Germans scholars, they clearly have more authority on the subject than me, a Latin-American animation student lol. There’s plenty of articles on the M-word Rotary controversy in German but the ones I linked above are in English since… if you follow my blog you probably speak English.

There’s also the Chinesisches Haus (Chinese House) and Drachenhaus (Dragon House) on the palace grounds that show the exoticism of East Asian culture in 18th century Europe. (I’m at my ten photo per post limit so… I guess y'all have to look the Drachenhaus up). The two structures are decorated in Chinoiserie style: a European design based off East Asian aesthetics. The goal isn’t accuracy. It’s “appreciation” of the culture in the most superficial and empty way. It’s fetishization. Think 18th century weeaboos. I won’t go into it too much here since I ran out of photo space. I’ll likely make another post on it sometime.
