Movie Review | Rollover (Pakula, 1981)
Tumblr media
The premise of this geopolitical financial romantic thriller seemed too good to pass up, but honestly this isn’t very good. Alan J. Pakula is mostly known for some great conspiracy thrillers, but I don’t think he has a feel for the one here. It takes way too long for the characters to develop any curiosity or suspicion or for any investigative element to transpire. I’m not normally one of the plot hole police, but Ebert is right that the villainous conspiracy doesn’t seem all that difficult to detect and the coverup attempts are even clumsier.
I liked seeing Kris Kristofferson (R.I.P.) and Jane Fonda together, but their relationship seemed a weird fit for the straight faced handling of the material. And while this has some of the shadows of Pakula’s better films, I don’t think the movie finds an appropriate aesthetic for the energy or the surfaces of international finance. That being said, in the years since this movie came out global financial collapse is no longer some far fetched possibility (although the movie takes way too long to articulate these stakes), and the note the movie ends on certainly has an impact, even if the copy I watched on YouTube seemed to end pretty abruptly. So who knows, maybe there was a happy ending in the minutes I didn’t see.
Anyway, Ebert closes the segment with another good burn: “After China Syndrome I was afraid of nuclear power plants and after this one I still have my money in the bank.”
