Sirius escapes Azkaban and turns up at Grimmauld Place to an unexpected sight…

“Sirius stood in front of the house he was raised in, the house he was tortured in, the house he was never welcomed in, and the house he ran away from. Sirius took a deep steadying breath and opened the front door.

Sirius had been expecting the house to be grey, dark, and stale, but as he crossed the threshold he was hit with the smell of cooking food and the sounds of a warm crackling fire. As he walked through the foyer he found he was in the direct eye-line of a man, a familiar looking man who stood with impeccable posture at the long kitchen table cutting carrots. The man was of average height (slightly taller than Sirius), slim build, and had dark black curly hair that he kept tucked behind one ear. He continued chopping vegetables in tailored black slacks, heavy leather boots, and an expensive looking gray wool sweater. Most curiously about his appearance was the emerald green apron that was fitted around the man's waist that read “World’s Greatest Uncle” in silver lettering.

Without looking up the man spoke, “Took you long enough”, and before Sirius could take in what was happening the man disarmed and bound him with a personally altered version of Incarcerous. Chains appeared out of nowhere and wrapped their way around Sirius’ body. The chains tightened against his chest and he fell to his knees. The man raised his wand and wordlessly floated Sirius into the living room and onto a chair. He pulled a wooden chair over from the kitchen and positioned it in front of Sirius. “Hello brother”, said the man, who was now looking him directly in the eyes. His eyes were the exact same grey-blue colour as his own… “Regulus?” Sirius managed to say. “Surprise”, Sirius’ brother replied with a smirk.

“Reg? Reg? … Is someone here?” A voice called from the kitchen. Without breaking eye contact Regulus spoke, “No one important, Harry ''.

Harry? Harry!? Harry was here, here with Regulus. His brother Regulus, who was dead, but also clearly not dead… How? Was Reg keeping him here for the Dark Lord? Thoughts raced through Sirius' mind and then red hot anger consumed him. “HOW DARE YOU” he screamed, “How fucking dare you trap Harry here. What is this, you fake your death to run secret missions for your Dark Lord? Steal Harry away here to keep him captive, for what!? Keep him under lock and key until Voldemort can return and kill him himself!?” Sirius spat the last few words, “How fucking dare you.”

Regulus’ eyes narrowed and, wandlessly, performed a silencing charm on Sirius. “I prefer my dogs muzzled, don’t you?” said Regulus in a tight controlled voice.”

Sirius Black did not have “crushes”. People had crushes on him and he flirted with them, maybe even a little more sometimes but his heart never got involved. Honestly he was beginning to think that he couldn’t like people the way his friends did. The way James was always going on about Lily Evans never really made sense to him. Then there was Peter who seemed to be crushing on a new girl each week. He’s never felt that way about a girl before... and at 17 he feels he ought to have had his first real crush by now, but it’s simply never happened for him. He likes girls and could recognize when they were attractive. He even liked kissing them and fooling around, but afterwards he never had the urge to do it again. He simply moved on with his day. Whereas his best mate James took one look at Lily Evans in first year and hasn’t stopped drooling over her existence since. Sirius has even caught James trying to conceal a hard-on after a particularly gruesome scolding from said fiery red head. Lily could slap him and James would say “thank you”.

Now even Remus seemed to be having crushes. Remus and him had always been a team. When Peter or James were going off about the girls they liked the other two boys would always share a small exasperated smile. He found solace in those shared looks, in knowing he was not alone. But now he watches his tawny haired friend from across the common room and he’s blushing as a 7th year Hufflepuff touches his arm while they talk. Sirius is going to be sick. If he were mature for his age he might have taken a moment to consider what about the scene in front of him caused such a visceral reaction. Surely feeling the need to vomit from seeing your best mate flirting was an overreaction. Alas, he was not mature for his age, and perhaps deeply repressed. Thus he acted on instinct without giving it a second thought. He pushed his way through the hoard of people in the Gryffindor common room, all crammed together for their annual start of term party, making his way to the pair nestled in the corner.

“Moony!” Sirius called once he was within ear shot. “Come out for a smoke with me will ya?”

“I’m in the middle of something, Pads,” Remus replied, trying to brush him off. However, Sirius was not one to give up that easily. He was now whining while tugging on Remus’ sleeve like an oversized toddler. “Please Moony! Yours always taste better”.

“Then take my pack and go” said Remus as he tried to casually shove Sirius off, but Sirius would not have it. Remus gave a sympathetic smile to the girl he had been talking to. She did not look impressed at Sirius’ dramatics and did not hide her annoyance.

“It tastes better when you light them for me” he begged, giving him his best puppy dog eyes and pout. With a sigh the werewolf conceded. “I’m sorry Bella, he’s not going to let this go. I’ll be back in a few.”

Sirius grabbed his friend’s hand and dragged him up to their dormitory. They bypassed their beds and crawled out the window nearest Sirius’ bed. They’d discovered in second year that this window had a particularly wide ledge that was perfect for sneaking out to stargazing and in later years it became their signature smoking spot. Remus and Sirius were the only marauders who indulge in the muggle habit and thus Sirius saw the roof as ‘their spot’. Sirius also feels this is all Moony’s fault since he was the one who introduced him to muggle fags in the first place.

Remus followed Sirius in crawling out the window onto the ledge. He performed the task with less grace than the dark-haired boy given the several inches he had on him. “Did you really need me for this, Pads?”

Settling himself down in his usual spot Sirius did not even dignify Remus’ question with a response. After a few fidgets Padfoot appeared satisfied with his position and started pulling out the smokes from his jacket pocket. Watching Sirius wiggle around to get comfortable always reminded him of Padfoot, his animagus form. When he thinks about it, a lot of Sirius’ mannerisms are eerily dog-like.

“That girl was practically throwing herself at you” commented Sirius, giving his friend a playful nudge.

“Oh so you did notice” replied Remus. “Thought you might have been blind seeing how you so rudely interrupted.”

Sirius scoffed. “Don’t tell me you're actually into her, Moons.”

“So what if I am?”

“She’s not even your type.”

“Who are you to tell me what my type is!”

“Please, I know you better than anyone. You’ve never looked her way until tonight when she made it known she was interested.” argued Sirius.

“Sometimes that’s how it works!” retorted Remus, giving his friend an indignant look. “You get to know them and see how things go.”

“Mhmm. Will you light this for me already?” Sirius turned toward his friend, cigarette between his lips, and leaned forward.

“Such a princess”

“But I’m your princess”

“Sure, if you say so.”

The two boys drifted into comfortable silence, passing the cigarette between. Once the first was finished Sirius fished in his pocket for another and leaned back over for a light. He misjudged how close they were and practically knocked heads. Noticing his miscalculation he jumped back and slipped a little. Remus reached out and steadied him and they were closer than he expected. Remus was clutching his shoulders reassuringly, “you alright?”

“Ya” Sirius huffed. He couldn’t bring himself to tear his eyes away from the honey brown ones staring back at him. Sirius always thought Moony had the prettiest eyes in their group. Even when others commented on the stunningness of his own sharp gray eyes he always preferred the warm browns and flecks of gold and red that he could find in Remus’. He’d always known how warm and comforting they were but this close up there was more to them, there was a hunger there that Sirius couldn’t place. All he knew was Remus was still holding him by the shoulders and their eyes were locked. His heart rate was picking up and something low in his stomach was squirming under his friends’ gaze. He looked away, clearing his throat. “Thanks”. Remus dropped his arms and returned to smoking, “Don’t mention it. Be more careful though, will you? I don’t want to have to scrap a Sirius shaped pancake off the grass.”

“Awh” Sirius coed. “If I didn’t know better it would almost sound like you cared about me?”

“Don’t be daft, Pads” Remus scolded. “Of course I care about you, you’re my best friend”.

The pair fell into another comfortable silence as they finished the second cigarette. Before lighting another Sirius turned to his friend, “If you’re actually interested in that girl then I’m sorry for pulling you away.”

“It’s alright, I’m used to your dramatics” replied Remus. “ But did I really look so disinterested that you felt the need to rescue me?”

The question stumped the shorter boy. “I don’t know… To be honest I didn’t really think about it… I just knew I wanted to get you out of there. You’ve never been interested in any one before…”

“That’s not true” replied Remus, puffing out a cloud of smoke. “I’ve been interested in people before… they just don’t usually like me back.”

“Moony! Have you been keeping your crushes from me?” asked Sirius, slightly outraged and hurt that his friend has been hiding things from him. Maybe it really was just him without crushes this whole time. He’s not sure why but the idea of Remus keeping this from him feels like a betrayal. As much as this new information hurts he wants to be a good friend and have Moony know that he can tell him anything. “Any girl would be lucky to have you, I can’t imagine anyone not liking you back”.

“Thanks, Siri” spoke Remus softly, passing the light cig back to him.

“So tell me Moons” voiced Sirius in between drags. “Who are these mystery women you’ve had your eyes on?”

Remus blew out a breath to steady himself, knowing this conversation might lead to him revealing one of his last kept secrets. There wasn’t much the marauders didn’t know about him these days but there was still one card Remus kept close to his heart. “You’ll have to work for that information, Pads. I’m not spilling all my secrets tonight”

His friend gave him his best puppy dog look again, knowing Remus would have a hard time denying him. “Don’t you trust me?”

“Of course I trust you” replied Remus. “I trust you with my ‘furry little problem’ don’t I?”

“Exactly! So I think you’re safe to tell me about which bird you fancy” smiled Sirius, batting his eyelashes and passing the fag back to his friend.

Remus sighed and got himself comfortable, taking a long drag. Perhaps he was prolonging having to reveal what he knew he was about to admit. “There you go again assuming all my crushes are on girls…”

At this disclosure Sirius cocked his head, not unlike a confused dog. “What?”

“You heard me” spoke Remus, putting out the butt of the cigarette on the roof.

“Be honest with me, do you have a crush on Minnie?”

“Ew Sirius, no! Besides, Mcgonagall is still a girl”.

“She absolutely is not,” retorted Sirius. “She’s a woman!”

“Fair, I’ll give you that”

Sirius continued to look at the werewolf with big gray eyes, looking at him like he was trying to solve the world's greatest riddle.

“Boys, Sirius” huffed Remus, exasperated at his friend's slowness. “I’m referring to boys”

“You like boys…? Like romantically?”

“I like boys AND girls romantically and sexually, ya” explained the brown haired boy. “It’s called being queer or bisexual, it’s not new. Figured it was about time I told you guys I was bent… So…do you hate me?”

“Why would I hate you? I could never hate you, you’re literally my favourite person! I’m just wrapping my head around this… Obviously I’ve heard of queer people before, my uncle Alpard was disowned for being queer, you know that. I just… outside of him, I’ve never really thought about it… that people I know could also be queer. My parents were so against the idea I just kind of didn’t think about it…” Sirius trailed off, eyes looking down to his lap and the rooftop they were sitting on. “Thanks for telling me. I really appreciate you trusting me with this. This changes nothing about how I see you”

A small, okay maybe a big, part of Remus was actually hoping that disclosing his queerness to Sirius would change how he saw him. That hopeful part of him that wouldn’t die was secretly wishing Sirius would disclose his own queerness and his undying love to Remus and the two would stroll off into the sunset. Alas, Remus has never been that lucky.

Sirius spoke, breaking Remus out of his thoughts, “Can I ask you something?”

“Of course, you know you can talk to me about anything”

“You have to promise not to laugh at me”

“I promise” said Remus, making a cross over his heart in the muggle fashion.

“What does it feel like to have a crush on someone?”

Of all the things he was expecting the dark haired boy to ask, this was not on the list. Surely Sirius has had crushes before and knew firsthand what it felt like, didn’t he? “Well… I suppose it's a little different for everyone, but for me it feels like always wanting to be around that person. Thinking of them a lot and wondering how they are and how I can be there for them. I can get protective of the people I’m interested in and I’m often my happiest when I’m around them. Kind of like a warm and fuzzy feeling. Does that make sense?”

“Mhmm” hummed Sirius. “I think I get it.”

“Have you never felt something like that for a person before?” questioned Remus.

“I don’t know…” replied Sirius sheepishly. “I mean I kinda feel that way about you but I suppose that’s normal to feel about your mates.”

This took the taller boy by surprise and he couldn’t help that his heart did a little backflip hearing Sirius say that. “Do you feel that way about James and Pete too?”

“In a way” Sirius pondered. “You’re different though, you know that.”

“How am I different?”

“Well…” Sirius paused. “James is my brother and I’d do anything for him. He means the world to me. And Pete’s a really good friend and is always there to give the best hugs and share sweets when I’m sad.”

“And me?” asked Remus, looking up into his friend’s keen eyes and bumping their knees together.

“I guess with you it’s a little different…” Sirius broke eye contact, opting to look down and pick at the roof as he often did when feeling vulnerable. “You’re just… you’re my moony, I don’t know. You’re kind of my favourite person to be around, like I already said.”

“What about all those girls you’ve kissed? Did you ever feel that way about them?”

“Correction, the girls kissed me”

Remus looked at him confused. “You didn’t want to kiss them?

“I wasn’t opposed to it obviously… It's nice to feel wanted and desired, but I never really desired them back in that way… I don’t know Moons, I’m starting to think there’s something wrong with me.”

“There’s nothing wrong with you Sirius, you’re perfect just the way you are. I do have an idea though… Can I try something?”

“Sure,” replied Sirius.

“You have to promise not to get mad or hate me afterwards.” Demanded the werewolf, looking slightly worried. “ It’s just an… experiment”

“Moony” answered Sirius. “You know there is nothing that would make me hate you. Just like I said earlier.”

“Okay, okay. Promise?”

“Promise!” shouted Sirius emphatically.

Then Remus did the absolute last thing Sirius expected. He laced his right hand around the back of his neck, fingers combing through the hair at the bottom of his head and brought their lips together.

The world stopped.

“Do that again” whispered Sirius.

And he did. Again, and again, and again. Sirius no longer thought there was something wrong with him. This was what he had been missing. At that moment Sirius felt that all was right in the world.
