Rolling Conveyor Systems vs. Belt Conveyors: Which Is Right for Your Operation?
When it comes to designing an efficient material handling system, one of the most important decisions you’ll need to make is choosing the right type of conveyor system. Rolling conveyor systems and belt conveyors are two of the most popular options, but which one is best suited for your operation? To make an informed choice, it’s essential to understand the unique benefits, limitations, and applications of each system.
In this blog, we’ll compare rolling conveyor systems and belt conveyors in terms of performance, maintenance, cost, and suitability for different types of operations.
1. Basic Differences Between Rolling Conveyor Systems and Belt Conveyors
At the core, rolling conveyors and belt conveyors function similarly—they both move materials from one place to another. However, the mechanisms they use to achieve this are different:
Rolling Conveyor Systems: These use rollers (often powered or gravity-fed) to move products along the conveyor line. The material being transported usually sits directly on the rollers or may be placed in bins that roll along the system.
Belt Conveyors: These use a continuous loop of material (usually rubber or fabric) to transport goods. The belt is typically powered by motors that drive the rollers at either end of the conveyor system.
2. Performance: Which Is More Efficient for Your Needs?
Rolling Conveyors: Ideal for moving heavy, rigid, or large items that can roll smoothly across the rollers. They are highly effective in situations where gravity can assist in the movement of goods, such as on sloped conveyors or in gravity-fed systems. Rolling conveyors excel at high-speed operations and heavy-duty applications, making them well-suited for industries like warehousing, manufacturing, and distribution.
Belt Conveyors: These are often more versatile in terms of the range of materials they can transport. Whether you need to move small, fragile items or large, bulky loads, a belt conveyor can be customized to handle them. They are also more effective at conveying items that may not roll easily on a set of rollers, such as loose materials or products that need to be held firmly in place. Belt conveyors are widely used in industries like food processing, mining, and automotive assembly lines.
3. Maintenance: Which System is Easier to Maintain?
Rolling Conveyors: Generally, rolling conveyors are less complex than belt conveyors and tend to have fewer components that could potentially fail. However, the rollers themselves can become worn over time, especially if heavy or abrasive materials are being moved. Regular inspection and occasional replacement of rollers and bearings are required to keep the system running smoothly. If the rollers are powered, they may also require motor and electrical system maintenance.
Belt Conveyors: Belt conveyors tend to require more maintenance than rolling conveyors, primarily due to the wear and tear on the belt itself. Over time, belts can stretch, tear, or develop holes, which can result in downtime if not addressed. Additionally, belt conveyor systems often have more parts, such as motors, pulleys, and tensioners, which require periodic maintenance to prevent breakdowns. For industries with continuous operations, belt conveyor downtime can be costly.
4. Cost Considerations: Which Is More Cost-Effective?
Rolling Conveyors: Typically, rolling conveyor systems have a lower upfront cost compared to belt conveyors, especially for simple, gravity-fed designs. However, the price can increase depending on customization (e.g., powered rollers, automated control systems). Overall, their simplicity and durability make them a cost-effective option for many industries, especially for basic applications.
Belt Conveyors: While the initial cost of a belt conveyor can be higher due to the complexity of the system, they may offer long-term value in terms of their versatility and ability to handle a wide variety of materials. The cost of a belt conveyor system can also depend on the material used for the belt (fabric, rubber, PVC, etc.) and the specific features required for your operation.
5. Suitability for Different Applications
Rolling Conveyors: Best suited for applications where the materials being transported are rigid, heavy, or have a uniform shape. They are frequently used in industries such as:
Warehousing: Rolling conveyors are ideal for sorting and distributing packages across long distances.
Distribution Centers: They efficiently handle boxes, crates, and pallets.
Automotive Manufacturing: For moving car parts or heavy automotive components along assembly lines.
Airport Baggage Handling: Rolling conveyors are commonly used to move luggage due to their robustness.
Belt Conveyors: More suited for applications where the materials are more diverse or need to be contained securely on the conveyor. They are frequently used in industries such as:
Food Processing: Belt conveyors are widely used to carry delicate or perishable items like fruits, vegetables, and packaged goods.
Mining and Aggregate: For transporting bulk materials such as coal, sand, or gravel over long distances.
Pharmaceutical Manufacturing: To move bottles, vials, or other pharmaceutical items through production lines.
E-commerce: For packaging and sorting orders.
6. Conclusion: Which Conveyor System is Right for You?
Choosing between rolling conveyors and belt conveyors depends on the specifics of your operation. Here’s a quick rundown to help you decide:
Choose Rolling Conveyors if:
Your products are rigid, heavy, and can roll smoothly over rollers.
You need a low-maintenance, cost-effective system for gravity-fed applications.
Speed and efficiency are paramount in your operation, and you’re moving large volumes of goods.
Choose Belt Conveyors if:
You need a versatile system that can handle a wide range of materials, including delicate or small items.
You’re transporting loose or irregularly shaped materials.
Your operation requires continuous operation with minimal downtime.
In many cases, businesses may even find that a combination of both rolling conveyors and belt conveyors works best for their operation, as each system has its own unique set of advantages. Regardless of your choice, both systems can greatly improve the efficiency of your material handling processes, reduce labor costs, and enhance overall productivity.

Currents of Change — Part 1: Beyond the Waves: The Ocean in Constant Motion
When people think of the ocean, they often picture waves rolling onto the beach. But beneath the surface, the ocean is a powerful, dynamic force, constantly in motion in ways we rarely see. Two of the most important players shaping our world’s climate are the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and the Gulf Stream — and they don’t just move water, they impact weather, ecosystems, and economies.
What is the AMOC?
The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is a massive system of ocean currents that works much like a conveyor belt, moving warm water from the tropics up to the North Atlantic. This warm water travels via the Gulf Stream, which flows along the eastern coast of the United States before crossing the Atlantic. When it reaches colder northern waters, the warm water cools, sinks, and flows back south at deeper levels. This cycle, moving both warm and cold water, helps regulate global temperatures, particularly in Europe and North America.
Without the AMOC, the UK and Ireland wouldn’t just be experiencing cooler winters — they would be facing climates similar to those much further north. The AMOC is a major reason Europe enjoys relatively mild winters for its latitude.
The AMOC’s VIP Treatment: Why Europe Has It Easier Than Canada
The AMOC provides what could be described as climate “VIP treatment” to parts of Europe, especially the UK and Ireland. The Gulf Stream, a critical part of the AMOC, transports warm water from the tropics to the North Atlantic, making winters in places like London far more pleasant than their counterparts at similar latitudes.
Let’s take a lighthearted look at this: London sits at about the same latitude as Calgary, Alberta, yet the experiences of these cities during winter couldn’t be more different. While Londoners debate whether they need a jacket, Calgarians are layering up to survive icy temperatures. Similarly, Dublin, Ireland, with its occasional rainy days, benefits from the Gulf Stream’s warmth, while St. John’s, Newfoundland, experiences a much harsher, frostier reality — despite sitting at nearly the same latitude.
So why is Europe getting all this warm love from the ocean, while Canada’s left out in the cold? The AMOC’s warm tropical waters act like a blanket for Western Europe, protecting it from the freezing conditions its Canadian counterparts endure. Without the AMOC, much of Europe would feel like the Arctic tundra!
How Do These Currents Shape the Environment?
The AMOC and Gulf Stream don’t just impact the climate — they shape marine ecosystems and even influence industries. These currents support rich biodiversity, helping transport nutrients and providing suitable conditions for a variety of marine species. They also moderate weather patterns, supporting agriculture, tourism, and fishing industries.
In Europe, the warmth delivered by the AMOC allows for longer growing seasons and more temperate weather, supporting a range of economic activities that would be much harder to sustain in colder climates. Meanwhile, in North America, the Gulf Stream plays a key role in stabilizing weather and marine life along the eastern seaboard.
Why Are These Currents So Important?
While waves are the most visible sign of ocean movement, the slow, steady flow of the AMOC and Gulf Stream is what really drives climate and environmental stability. These currents regulate global temperatures, support marine ecosystems, and even help determine how we live and work. If they were to slow down or stop, the impacts would be catastrophic — particularly for Europe and the North Atlantic.
But for now, the AMOC keeps moving, quietly ensuring that winter in London isn’t quite like winter in Calgary. And as we continue this series, we’ll explore more about how even small changes in these currents could have profound impacts on our world.

Usha Martin
Usha Martin Limited underwent the incorporation process in the year 1986 under the name Usha Beltron Ltd. Usha Martin Limited, together with its subsidiaries, manufactures and sells wires, wire ropes, and strands products in India and internationally. The company is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of wire rope. Their wire rope manufacturing facilities are located in Ranchi, Hoshiarpur, Dubai, Bangkok and UK.
The company offers wire ropes, including oil and offshore, crane, mining, elevator, fishing, aerial, and general engineering ropes, as well as ropes for conveyor cords and structural systems. The first wire rope reel rolled out of the company in 1962. Its public issue in 1961 was oversubscribed by more than 300 per cent. In 1963, Rajeev Jhawar Usha Martin Limited paid its maiden dividend and doubled the production from 3,600 tonnes to 7,200 tonnes in just two-and-a-half years.
Rajeev Jhawar, the Managing Director of Usha Martin Limited has always put significant emphasis on the continual improvement of Usha Martin’s products. Revenue of Usha Martin from exports on consolidated basis grew from Rs.1034.26 Crore in the FY 2020–21, to Rs.1366.24 Crore during FY 2021–22, an increase of 32.10% and this is continuously improving this year also.
Usha Martin: Are insiders aligned with shareholders?
Insider interest in a company always sparks a bit of intrigue and many investors are on the lookout for companies where insiders are putting their money where their mouth is. Because often, the purchase of stock is a sign that the buyer views it as undervalued. However, small purchases are not always indicative of conviction, and insiders don’t always get it right. Usha Martin insiders spent ₹8.6m on stock, over the last year where in contrast, any selling was not seen. This is a good look for the company as it paints an optimistic picture for the future. It is also worth noting that it was company insider Stuti Agarwalla who made the biggest single purchase, worth ₹6.8m, paying ₹136 per share.
The good news, alongside the insider buying, for Usha Martin bulls is that insiders have a meaningful investment in the stock. To be specific, they have ₹2.4b worth of shares. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. Even though that’s only about 4.3% of the company, it’s enough money to indicate alignment between the leaders of the business and ordinary shareholders.
Huge growth in revenue generation for Usha Martin — Rajeev Jhawar, the man behind this target

Keeping Your Car Wash Equipment Running Smoothly and Efficiently
Whether you're opening a car wash on your property or expanding your existing operation, the equipment you use plays a critical role in its success. The right equipment can help you maintain consistent service and improve the customer experience, while also ensuring your operations run smoothly and efficiently.
Preventative Maintenance
The best way to keep your car wash equipment running smoothly and efficiently is through routine maintenance. Just like with any other type of equipment, regular checkups and tune-ups are necessary to ensure your wash is operating as it should and that all pieces of the equipment are working correctly and efficiently.
To do this, follow the manufacturer's recommendations for preventive maintenance, but be sure to pay attention to your facility's environment-specific concerns, too. For instance, if you notice an area of your car wash that's constantly exposed to heavy amounts of chemicals or water, you may want to consider a more aggressive cleaning schedule for that area.
Automated Systems
Conveyor/tunnel washes operate on a conveyor with a number of brushes that clean the front, sides and rear of vehicles. These include top brushes, which descend on an arm from above and roll over the surface of the vehicle; wraparounds, which stand on the sides of the tunnel and spin to clean the front, side and rear; mitter curtains, which are suspended lengths of brush that oscillate to clean the top surfaces of vehicles; wheel and tire brushes, which clean the wheels of a vehicle by spinning them at high speeds; and rockers/low side washers, which sit low and spin to clean the rocker panel area of a vehicle.
CTAs, or chemical tire applicators, apply specialized formulations to remove brake dust and buildup on the tire's surface. They're typically activated when a customer purchases a wheel cleaning upgrade or when the wash uses the tire sensor, which allows it to know the car's wheel position.
In addition to sill brushes, many car washes use wheel-rim disc brushes that extend outward and rotate at high speeds to clean the entire surface of a customer's wheel. These are especially useful for trucks, which may need to be cleaned from above because they have a higher roof than most cars.
Reactive Maintenance
As with any other piece of equipment, reactive maintenance can be needed after your car wash equipment has been damaged or has experienced a breakdown. In this case, your maintenance crew will fix the damage or replace the broken part so that everything functions properly again.
N&S Services
Founded in 2004, N&S Services is an independent maintenance service provider that provides services to car wash owners throughout the UK. They can install, repair and maintain all types of self-service car wash equipment and manufacture their own high-quality cleaning products.
Using recycled water is an increasingly important factor in many parts of the country, which means that car washes must find ways to make their water use more efficient and environmentally friendly. One such way is by installing water treatment systems that use recycled water for both washing and drying purposes.

Top 08 Tyres Company In World.
What is tyre?
Firstly know the difference between Tire and Tyre. A Tire (American English) or Tyre (British English, see spelling difference). So, Tyre is a ring-shaped component that surrounds a wheel's rim to transfer a vehicle's load from the axle through the wheel to the ground and to provide traction on the surface over which the wheel travels. Most tyres, such as automobiles and bicycles are pneumatically inflated cushion that absorbs shocks as the tyre rolls over rough features in the surface. Tyres provide a footprint called a contact patch, that is designed to match the weight of the vehicle with the bearing strength of the surface that it rolls over by providing a bearing pressure that will not deform the surface excessively. Lets start the topic.

First Look: The 2019 Audi R8
“Born on the track, built for the road.” This intrinsic Audi Sport philosophy rings particularly true in the case of the new R8, which is set to take to the road in early 2019 featuring a raft of changes, but also two important constants – retention of the much loved naturally aspirated V10 petrol engine, and suffusion with a sizable dose of racing DNA achieved by sharing 50 per cent of components with the R8 LMS GT3 competition car. Highlights of the latest R8 range include more power, torque and performance, including a first foray beyond the 200mph mark for several versions, and even greater handling precision thanks to suspension and steering revisions.
The power of the naturally aspirated V10 engine at the heart of the R8 is now uprated to 570PS in the ‘standard’ R8 Coupé and Spyder V10 quattro. The top V10 plus versions in each body style will in future carry the name ‘V10 performance’, aligning them with the most powerful models elsewhere in the Audi Sport range, and have also benefited from a power upgrade to 620PS. The four versions will go on sale in Europe in early 2019.
Even more power and torque: the engines
Instant response, lightning-fast high-revving and a unique sound – the heart of the Audi R8 is its naturally aspirated ten-cylinder engine. With the basic unit, the 540PS of power has been increased by 30PS and the torque boosted by 10 Nm (7.4 lb-ft) to 550 Nm (405.7 lb-ft), which is on tap at 6,500 revolutions per minute. The Audi R8 V10 quattro accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 3.4 seconds (Coupé) and 3.5 seconds (Spyder) before reaching a top speed of 201mph (Spyder: 200mph).
The 5.2 FSI in the Audi R8 V10 performance quattro generates 620PS instead of the previous 610PS, with peak torque of 580 Nm (427.8 lb-ft) improving upon the previous 560 Nm (413.0 lb-ft). The increase here is primarily the result of an optimized valve train with components made of titanium. The Coupé sprints to 62mph in 3.1 seconds, the Spyder in 3.2 seconds. The propulsive power ends at 205mph and 204mph respectively. Both engines come with a particulate filter to reduce emissions more effectively.
Razor-sharp precision: the suspension
Modifications to the suspension provide even more stability and precision. The assistance has been retuned both with the optional dynamic steering and the electromechanical power steering. Steering response, transitions between individual drive modes and feedback from the road come across as even more precise across the entire speed range.
In addition, Audi Sport has made the distinction between the profiles available as part of the Audi drive select dynamic handling system – comfort, auto, dynamic and individual – even clearer. On the R8 V10 performance quattro the three additional programs dry, wet and snow form part of the Performance mode as standard. They adapt the key dynamic parameters to the friction coefficient of the road. Thanks to the enhanced Electronic Stabilisation Control (ESC), the Audi R8 V10 performance brakes from 62mph to a standstill up to 1.5 meters earlier; the stopping distance from 124mph is up to five meters shorter – in each case depending on the exterior conditions.
The new Audi R8 V10 quattro is equipped with factory-installed 19-inch wheels. For the standard-fit steel discs Audi supplies red as opposed to black painted calipers as an option. The ceramic brakes generally come with a grey or red finish. The anti-roll bar at the front is optionally made from carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) and aluminium, which cuts weight by around two kilograms.
Sharper and tauter: the design
The honed character of the new R8 models also becomes clear visually. The Singleframe radiator grille has an even wider, flatter line. Thick bars divide up the large air inlets, and flat slits in the hood are reminiscent of the Audi Ur-quattro brand icon. The new front splitter is now wider, underscoring the focused look. The air vent grille runs across the full width; the diffuser has been drawn upward, making the R8 seem even wider. In the engine compartment the air filter is situated under a new, three-part cover, which is available in a choice of plastic or carbon fiber.
R8 customers can choose from three exterior packages depending on the engine variant; these packages add various highlights to the front splitter, the side trims and the diffuser. Standard specification for the R8 V10 quattro with 570PS is high-gloss black; the top-of-the-line version R8 V10 performance quattro with 620PS comes off the production line with a matte titanium look. The high-gloss carbon package is available for both engine variants. As an option, the Audi rings and badges on the exterior are painted in high-gloss black; the new metallic colors Kemora grey and Ascari blue are recent additions to the paint range.
The new look also includes the Audi R8 interior with its driver focus and new color and stitching options. The Audi exclusive range gives customers the opportunity to customize many details of their Audi R8 – inside and out.
Exclusive handicraft: R8 sports car manufacture
The Audi R8 is produced under the management of Audi Sport GmbH, a 100% subsidiary of AUDI AG, at the “Audi Böllinger Höfen” site in Heilbronn – very close to the tradition-rich location of Neckarsulm. Up to 500 highly-qualified employees work here at the 30,000 m2 production site.
The R8 production is organised as a flexible factory – where Audi Sport GmbH is further expanding its competence with regards to small batch production. Self-driving assembly skids, known as driverless transport systems (DTS), are not only used to carry the finished, painted body, but also for assembly, and replace the classic conveyor technology system. The DTS transport system has autonomous navigation that uses environmental features and RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) as well as high-performance capacitors. During assembly, the employees perform a large proportion of the manual activities in 15 cycles.
Flexibility is extremely important at the “Audi Böllinger Höfen” site – alongside the series models, the employees also produce the R8 LMS GT4. This demands a permanent transfer of technology from the motorsport sector, as well as very strong qualifications due to the complexity of the work processes.
Before delivery, every new high-performance sports car must pass a demanding acceptance process. This is followed by a quality inspection on the factory’s own test track and a test drive on public roads. Only then is the new Audi released for delivery to the customer.
During the first quarter of 2019, the new Audi R8 models will be available to order via the Audi Configurator and in Audi Centres across the UK.

“Our composite language”: WiT Interviews Translator Katy Derbyshire
A few weeks ago we spotlighted one of our favorite Women in Translation reads of 2018, Heike Geissler’s Seasonal Associate, in fellow WiT activist and translator extraordinaire Katy Derbyshire’s superb English rendition. Many of our readers know that as well as being one of the top German-to-English literary translators out there today, Katy was part of the team that initiated the newly inaugurated Warwick Prize for Women in Translation, whose third edition will open once again for submissions this spring.
We recently caught up with Katy to ask her a few questions about her superb Translator’s Note, in which she provides the fascinating backstory to the novel and to its translation and publication in English by Semiotext(e):
WiT: How did the Translator’s Note come about?
KD: I thought that seeing the book is about work, I could take the opportunity to describe my own. I toyed with the idea of mimicking Heike Geissler’s book and writing it in the second person—“You’re a translator, and you’re fortunate enough to love your job,” that kind of thing. Especially as Heike translates as well, from English into German . . . But that felt a little silly in the end so I stuck to a more traditional format, just keeping it plain and—I hope—clear for non-translators. I’m not the only translator to have realised that a translator’s note is useful to reviewers, giving them a little more background information and enhancing their understanding. I’m sure the book would have been reviewed anyway, but as you might have noticed, a few of the critics have drawn on what I wrote. Plus, of course, a note makes all of us translators a tiny bit more visible to our readers.
Did the publisher ask you to write it, or did you propose it yourself?
As it happened there was a clause in my contract that granted me the right to include a translator’s note. I assume that’s standard because semiotext(e) publish a lot of theory and non-fiction, and they didn’t specifically request one. But it set the ball rolling in my mind and seemed like a good opportunity. I don’t always write a translator’s note; sometimes the text doesn’t present the kind of challenges that might be of interest, sometimes I feel like it might spoil the “magic” of a particularly strong voice. But here it fitted well.
What I love about it is that you pull back the curtain to show what it means to translate—you’re not only doing dictionary work, far from it. For example, you say that as a translator you like to immerse yourself in another person’s writing and mimic it in your own language. In order to do that, since you’ve never worked at an Amazon fulfillment center, you dipped into an amazing trove of “Working at Amazon” videos on YouTube and listened to a range of people talk about working there. Getting those exact words and phrases right matters! I think that anyone who’s worked at an Amazon fulfillment center in the English-speaking part of the globe would agree that it's on the mark. Was achieving that one of the more complicated things about the translation?
It was, absolutely! That and working directly for an American publisher, when my English is very British. So those were the two things that most concerned me: How would an American say this? And how would an Amazon worker say this? I was lucky enough to be sharing a desk at the time with a very patient American friend, who kindly helped me to use “shopping cart” rather than “shopping trolley” and that kind of thing. The editor still had a bit of work to do on that front but I think it came out well. And then the online research was essential and eye-opening. I’m a big fan of that culture of sharing advice on YouTube, from makeup tutorials to DIY tips. It feels sincere and generous, and sometimes subversive. Anyone can have expert knowledge! Some of the Amazon fulfillment videos I found were made by people who were grateful to be working there and pleased to be given free pizza on long shifts, for example. Others were angry about how the company treated them but didn’t necessarily reflect on the system behind it. So that extra layer of perspective was fascinating and useful, and reminded me—although Heike says so herself—that a lot of people rely far more heavily on Amazon as an employer than she did, just working there to pay off her overdraft.
You say that Heike Geissler gave you the green light to add extra layers to the translation where you thought it was necessary, but you don’t identify these additions. I thought one added layer must have been about the word “tote,” which is Amazonspeak for the ubiquitous yellow crates used to hold products as they move on conveyor belts. By a remarkable coincidence, “tote” sounds like the word in German for death—ha! (But you don’t use the German word—Tod—which I found interesting). Can you give another example of what you added to the translation?
In that case, I left out the German word because, to a non-German-speaker, it doesn’t look like a homonym for tote, and I wanted to explain the odd reaction to the word but not add even more confusion. The other thing that springs to mind is that I added something to Heike’s initial description of herself—and therefore of you, as the reader who slips into her position through the narration. Here’s what it says now—everything from “Another important thing” is my addition:
From now on, you are me. That means you’re female; please don’t forget that because it’s important in places. You’re a writer and a translator, and at this point in life you have two sons and a partner who suits you well, something you’re usually aware of. Another important thing, which you rarely think about but which has to be said: You’re German, but the country you were born in no longer exists.
In this case, the book’s original readers can instantly place Heike geographically, because they know she’s in Leipzig in the former GDR. But I thought Anglophone readers might benefit from a little help. I added these interventions once I had a feel for our composite language, if you see what I mean—how Heike sounds in my English. And the book’s forthright style made that very easy to do. Obviously, I ran them by Heike too.
You write about the difficulties finding a publisher for the book in the US and UK. Do you think the Women in Translation problem had anything to do with that? I remember it was one of the books you listed in your LitHub post a few years ago on “10 German Books by Women We’d Love to See in English.”
I think there were a number of factors that made publishers cautious. Firstly, who wants to annoy Amazon these days? But also, the book is a long way from a conventional narrative. It’s a stylized account of Heike’s time working at Amazon, and it also explores broader ideas about paid labour and what it does to us. Yet it’s not a theoretical or philosophical book as such—it’s radically subjective. Hard to categorise, in other words! I’m only now thinking about whether gender played a role . . . Perhaps we unconsciously expect books about work to be written by men? Do we expect women to write about relationships, parenting, “soft subjects”? I’m not sure. At any rate, semiotext(e) came along and ignored all that. I’m really thrilled by the reactions and reviews—very exciting.
What are you working on now?
I’m finishing off a short story collection by Clemens Meyer for Fitzcarraldo Editions. Tomorrow I’m going to Leipzig to take a look at some of the stories’ real-life settings with the writer and his Italian translator, Roberta Gado. That’s the huge advantage of living in the same country as the writers I translate. I have to admit I took a longer break than usual between first translating the stories and finishing off, so I’m excited to be returning to them with a fresh viewpoint. They’re gorgeous, crazy and sad. This is the first time I’ve cried at my computer while translating.
What books are on your nightstand?
Too many! Here’s a photo . . . As it turns out, there’s only one male writer (and two anthologies) among them. Yay me.

Combined bearings for material handling applications
What is Combined Bearing Technology?
Combined bearings are wave bearings that can transmit together radial and axial loads. The configuration of combined bearing is in such a method that the axial and radial bearing operates at 900. The main load is approved by the radial bearing whereas the axial bearing takes the side thrust. The combined bearing is used with outline rails or channels. There are two key forms of profiles, I and C profiles. The combined bearing transparencies into the profile rail resulting in the required linear motion. The combined bearing is welded with flange plate for the mounting necessary as per the essential of the use. This assembly is majorly used for weighty duty vertical and horizontal movement with precision.
How combined bearings are diverse from other linear motion technologies?
Combined bearings are used ordinarily for high load applications. For sure claims like dusty atmosphere or high temperature environment linear guides or ball screws can be replaced by combined bearings. The overall valuation of dissimilar linear motion systems is given in the below table.

DWS Systems makes its international show debut at IFAT
DWS System, the joint venture between Siltbuster, the water treatment specialist and the German recycling equipment giant, Doppstadt, , will be exhibiting at IFAT 2016 in Munich. This will be the first time DWS Systems has taken part in an international show, since the company was formed in 2015.
Located in hall B1.404, DWS Systems will be exhibiting the latest Gritbuster WT-250 road sweepings recycling system. The WT-250 is uniquely engineered to handle road sweepings, gully waste and trommel fines on a commercial scale, handling up to 25 tonnes per hour. It cleverly uses water to further separate out recyclable materials - washed gravel and sand products - making it easier for materials recycling facilities to separate out on a large scale the constituent elements of the waste they handle. This boosts the level of material reuse and minimises waste going to landfill. Thanks to this level of innovation, the WT-250 is in the running for a prestigious MRW National Recycling Award.
DWS Systems will also be showing its range of water treatment technologies including the HB40R lamella clarifier. This is specifically designed for the removal of suspended solids and other matter from process waters, so that the water can be reused. As a result, those using DWS Systems’ water treatment kit can operate a closed loop process; they don’t have to rely on large settlement lagoons to naturally treat their waste water. The net result is compact solutions which can be rapidly deployed on small sites to reprocess a range of waste materials to a higher standard than can be achieved by the current dry processing techniques.
Commenting on the company’s presence at the exhibition, Dr Richard Coulton, founder of Siltbuster and CEO of DWS Systems UK said: “As just these two products show, we have some powerful solutions for the world’s recycling industry. The collaboration between our two businesses means we can roll them out to an international audience much faster, which is important as the recycling sector faces some real challenges which our systems address. Our presence at IFAT is an important first step in that process. It’s a great opportunity to showcase both the new business and most importantly, the technologies we offer.”
Chapter One - What is a Conveyor Belt?
A conveyor belt is a material handling system designed to move supplies, materials, and components using an efficient and effortless process that saves on time, energy, and cost. The design of conveyor belts includes two motorized pulleys with the conveyor material looped over them. The pulleys operate at the same speed and move in the same direction to activate the motion of the conveyor belt.
There is an endless number of types and uses for conveyor belts. All of the varieties serve the purpose of transporting materials and goods along a continuously moving path. Though motorized conveyor belts are the traditional form of a conveying system, there are systems that use rollers without a motor to move materials.
Chapter Two - Types of Conveyor Belts
The range and uses of conveyor belts cover several industrial settings and applications. The efficiency of conveyor belt systems assists in improving productivity, saves on labor costs, and decreases lead times. Conveyor belts move large quantities of goods quickly and reliably for transport, further assembly, or storage.
The principal reasons so many conveyor systems are in use are the savings in labor costs, efficient movement of goods, and their ability to keep products and materials from damage. They provide the best possible service at the lowest possible cost.
Types of Conveyor BeltsRoller Bed Conveyor Belt
The surface of a roller bed conveyor belt is a set of rollers that match the weight and speed required by the product. The length of the roller bed conveyor belt determines the number of rollers to be used.
A roller bed conveyor belt is designed for applications where materials are loaded by gravity. They are an ideal solution for conditions where materials have to be moved over long distances since they are designed to reduce friction.
Flat Belt Conveyor Belt
A flat belt conveyor belt uses a series of pulleys to move materials and supplies. Its belt is made of natural or synthetic materials; this makes it versatile and adaptable to varying conditions and applications. In some instances, a flat belt conveyor belt may have a center drive and nose bars.
Modular Conveyor Belt
A modular belt conveyor consists of interlocked pieces made of hard plastic with segments that can be easily removed and replaced. The design of modular belt conveyors makes it easier to clean, and the material is resistant to sharp and abrasive substances. Modular belt conveyors come in varying configurations and use a single belt to go around corners, in a straight line, up inclines, and down declines.
Cleated Conveyor Belt
Cleated belt conveyors have sections, pockets, or dividers that secure granular products when the belt declines or inclines. The cleats have equal spacing between them and come in various styles and shapes depending on the product to be moved and the design of the belt.
Inverted Capital T
An inverted T cleat stands perpendicular to the belt and provides support for delicate and fragile materials.
Forward Leaning Capital L
A leaning capital L has a wide base that can be curved to scoop up granular materials. The design of the capital L makes it less resistant to leverage forces.
Inverted V
Inverted V cleats are two inches or less to create a trough like effect and are used for heavy, abrasive, and larger pieces of bulk materials.
Lugs and Pegs
Lugs and pegs are designed to meet the specific needs of a product and are a cost effective solution for products that do not require continuous support, such as cartons. They can be selectively placed to move products of varying sizes.
Sidewall
The purpose of sidewalls on a conveyor belt is to keep the material being moved on the belt. Sidewall conveyor belts are ideal for incline and decline belts and help increase product load capacity to improve conveyor system efficiency. There are a wide variety of sidewall materials, and they can be corrugated at various depths to fit the needs of the product and application.
Curved Conveyor Belt
The curves in conveyor belts are used to carry products around corners, make transfers, and make efficient use of floor space. Curved conveyor belts can make “U” turns to face the direction from which they came. They are made with flat belts and can make turns at 45o, 90o, 135o, and 180o angles.
Incline Conveyor Belt
Incline conveyor belts have a rough, uneven surface to hold materials and prevent them from slipping or falling back. The underside of the belt is smooth to allow the belt to glide smoothly along the bed. Modular belt and timing belt conveyors can be used for this purpose. Depending on the material to be moved, cleats may be included for increased slippage prevention.
Decline Conveyor Belt
The purpose of a decline conveyor belt is to move products or materials down or change its height. As with the incline version of conveyor belts, a decline conveyor belt has a rough surface or cleats to prevent materials from slipping or falling.
Decline conveyor belts are a continuous operating conveyor system with an articulated frame with a section that is pivoted or placed downward to accommodate downward movement of products from an upper location.
An advancement in conveyor belt technology is the electroadhesion conveyor belt, which acts like a magnet that is activated by a switch to create a strong and secure holding force between the container and the belt. Two low amp power strips placed in the conveyor belt powers its holding force. Materials with an electrically conductive pattern are knitted into the belt to produce the force that holds materials in place.
Filter Conveyor Belt
Unlike conventional conveyor belts, filter conveyor belts allow materials to pass through in order to drain excess liquid from components or filter out toxins and contaminants. Filter conveyor belts are constructed with lateral grooves and holes in the center of the belt to allow liquids and fluids to escape. Drainage holes are placed in a fabric free zone down the center of the belt or sealed to prevent the liquid from soaking into the belt fabric.
Much like a sidewall conveyor belt, filter conveyor belts can have sidewalls to prevent liquids and fluids from spilling over the sides of the belt. They are made of heated polyester, polypropylene, polyolefin, or stainless steel mesh for dewatering applications.
Vacuum filter belts are used for washing coal and other ores to assist in the separation of fluids and solids.

Chiori Belt Overview and Features
CHIORINO belts research are ideal for all categories of conveyors, whether roller supported, straight, inclined, with rollers, depressed, non-inductive or conductive flame resistant, etc. The wide assortment of CHIORINO products provide a large selection of belts with several features including: non-conductive and conductive flame resistant (with or without conductive threading) flame retardant (food quality only) and food service type belts with pre-installed double stitching. All kinds of belts - from heavy duty truck conveyors and industrial belts to heavy duty PVC pipe, polyethylene, petroleum and rubber tubing - can be used in controlled environments. The high-quality CHIORINO belts are designed to stand up to the toughest work conditions withstanding temperatures of up to 350 degrees F. Unlike other types of plastic belt, the heavy duty plastic belt constructed of CHIORINO will not melt or warp when exposed to heat, cold, chemicals, grease, dirt, moisture, and excessive vibrations. In addition, the unique design allows for quick removal of chipped belt material.
Roller Belts: Since the invention of the first roller belt, chlorine belts have been on the cutting edge of automatic belt and pulley systems, offering a large variety of styles, materials, and applications. Chiori nema, nylon, and polyester are common materials used in high resistance roller belts, which are both durable and safe for a variety of applications. Ideal for general light duty, heavy-duty, and high resistance applications, these belts have an industry standard for easy installation and low maintenance.
Conveyor Belts: The basic function of conveyor belts is to transport raw materials and products from one location to another. While most conveyor belts are comprised of a straight track, others are made with curved tracks that allow for customized movement with ease and fluidity. These conveyor belts may include a combination of roller and non-roller components, including: belt, wire, conveyor, and non-conducive detergent delivery system. The conveyor belt is often the largest component of a priori system and typically consists of an axial "plane" that rolls over a non-bearing surface, transmitting and transporting any weight load.
Finger Joints: One of the most popular chlorine belts features finger joints on both sides of each end. These finger joints are ideal for use in food industry applications such as washing machines, can dispensers, food displays, vending machines, and pick & pack systems. Because finger joints are so durable, choir belts featuring these types of joints are designed to be very useful for years of use without requiring replacement or repair. Finger jointed choir belts, when designed for heavy industrial use, may require the use of extra tie straps and strong reinforcing hardware to ensure that the fingers have enough leverage to lift and transport the products they are intended to move.
Other characteristics of choir belts include wider width dimensions, larger sizes, and high tensile strength. Wide width dimensions are typically achieved through the use of galvanized steel or high tension rubber components. Large sizes are achieved through the use of large diameter galvanized steel profiles and sidewalls. Both of these features are necessary in order to provide the wide width of choir belts that are designed to handle heavy loads in food processing plants. High tensile strength is usually provided by high profile, stainless steel, or other high tensile alloy profiles and sidewalls.
There are several additional belt types that feature different materials and are used in highly automated workshops. These include doublewall construction with reinforced stitching and double overlap sidewalls and profiles. The construction of these belts is typically accomplished with high tensile rubber components. The use of high tensile reinforcement is important in highly automated workshops in that the stronger the sidewall/profile, the more force is able to hold and lift the load. Many choir belts are constructed with high tensile profiles and sidewalls made from galvanized steel. It is important to note that if force is applied to a priori belt's sidewalls and profiles they will not break or bend due to fatigue or design constraints, but instead will just become damaged and either need to be replaced or repaired.

The Asia Pacific generator sales market size is projected to reach USD 8.8 billion by 2025 from an estimated USD 6.8 billion in 2020, at a CAGR of 5.1% during the forecast period.Increasing requirement of hybrid generators, bi-fuel, and inverter generators is creating demand opportunities for the generator sales industry in the Asia Pacific region.
Also, increasing demand for uninterrupted & reliable power supply in several industries is driving the generator sales market in the Asia Pacific region. However, the growing adoption of energy storage technologies and renewable energy sources hinder the growth of generators in the Asia Pacific region.
“The industrial segment, by the end user, is expected to be the largest and the fastest-growing market from 2020 to 2025.”
Industrial account for the largest share in the Asia Pacific generator sales market in 2019. The adoption of power backup solutions during the peak demand period to reduce the demand-supply gap in remote areas drive the growth of the market in the industrial sector.
The industrial end-user segment includes utilities/power generation, oil & gas, and other industries. Other industries include mining, marine, chemical, military, and manufacturing industries. Industrial generators are developed to ensure that there is a continuous supply of power in the event of power failure from the grid system. Thus, such generators guarantee an efficient performance of the equipment during the non- availability of electric supply. Moreover, diesel generators are used widely in mining operations all over the world. They provide over 70% of all the power needed in mining operations by heavy-duty equipment, such as excavating machinery, drillers, conveyor belts, and cranes.
Developing countries, such as China, India, and Thailand, are witnessing rapid industrialization and have introduced favorable policies to support industrial growth, including adequate power supply. Such developments are expected to offer lucrative opportunities for the generator sales market in the Asia Pacific region in the near future.
“The gas segment, by fuel, is expected to be the fastest-growing market from 2020 to 2025.”
Natural gas fuel is growing owing to the expansion of the gas distribution network in emerging economies. Also, natural gas is used widely as an efficient source to power both emergency and portable generators and regarded as one of the most affordable and effective fuels among non-renewable resources for power generation. Also, natural gas generators are cheaper and more environment-friendly compared to diesel generators. In comparison to oil and coal, the emissions of sulfur, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) are considerably lower in the case of gas gensets. Such features of gas gensets, along with the development of gas distribution networks, are expected to motivate the end-users to install gas generators, which would drive the growth of the gas generator sales market in Asia Pacific.
“Cambodia: The fastest-growing country in the Asia Pacific generator sales industry.”
The country is developing into the fastest-growing end-market for energy, power, and technologies. Also, rapid economic growth and tariff reduction policy are driving the growth of the generator sales market in Cambodia.According to the International Trade Center,Cambodia has reduced 50% of the tariff lines in 2015 and has eliminated 90% tariff lines in 2017. This has promoted free trade movement within the country. With a favorable tariff reduction policy, the country is also focusing on installing power plants for the reliable supply of electricity. However, Cambodia, on an average, records 22% of T&D losses each year due to lack of transmission network, an unreliable supply from a local grid. Thus, the utility companies use generators in remote areas during the peak demand period to reduce the demand-supply gap. Therefore, all these factors drive the demand for generator sales in the Asia Pacific region.
