..so with set 12, my Random Word Roller Derby Drawing Prompts (RandoDerby) have gone from scans of post-it note sized sketches, to scans of post-it note sized sketches I digitally color and shade :/

RandoDerby 12a: Civilian. …at some point we were all hashtag-rollerderbynewbie-s, just figuring out how it all worked; I'd wager many of us started that process as spectators.

RandoDerby prompt list 1

So, JanuDerby was a list of derby-related prompts on Instagram where people posted photos for a different prompt for each day of January. I started doing sketches for JanuDerby, but cuz I was just doing quick sketches daily cuz I wasn't spending 1-4 hours finishing them digitally it was fun and I could draw a lot. So I started my own RandoDerby prompts based on the output of RandomWordGenerator.com, and here's my first set of prompts and sketches:

1a. Comedy: …since like 90%+ of my #rollerderbycartoon -s have been comedy, I thought I'd take the prompt "comedy" and draw the race for Lead Jammer in the form of the Greek "Comedy / Tragedy" masks :D :O

1b. Bird: Look, over the apex -- it's a bird! It's a plane! It's a FROG!

1c. Cool: Blocker, blocker, crazy blocker! Stay cool-y-cool, blocker!

1d. Enlarge: ..this probably isn't the most Derby Muscle Building Exercise… but it's the one I could most easily represent "lots of reps" AND illustrate without having to draw gym equipment ;)

1e. Cigarette: Here's my nicotine-free Derby response to the unfortunate random word prompt, "Cigarette"!

Roller Derby Punchline Madlibs 4: Can-Opener Amethyst. (In roller derby, a "Can Opener" is a kind of block where the skater pops up and catches her opponent in the sternum or chest).

Ah; I've made a joke that kinda only makes sense if you are a Columbo fan AND know a bit about roller derby. So for everyone outside of that Venn Diagram's intersection:

In the '70s, there was a television program starring Peter Falk as Lieutenant Columbo.

In roller derby you skate counterclockwise around the track; hence, you're always turning to your left. Also "N.S.O." is the abbreviation for "Non-Skating Official", one of two kinds of referees. And um.. since this referee is on skates, we'll just assume they usta be an NSO. (and "Column" has nothin' to do with nothin', outside of phonetics). Also "Official Review" is a derby term for a time-out officials take (or coaches request) to review a jam / unit of play and assess penalties. So it's like, "..just one more thing"

Roller Derby Punchline Madlibs 1: Santa Hat Sizzle. In case you wondered what kind of train wreck you'd get from writing phrases and madlib-ing a Verb and a Noun, and using them as a roller derby cartoon punchline, here's an example. It would be this kind of train wreck.

Remedial Roller Derby: (I'm sure I've mentioned this before but) an Apex Jump is when the jammer jumps over the corner of the track, and lands in-bounds.
