Please join Project Roll Call and Flags of Honor Escorts as we escorted the Roll Call Flag and the Roll Call Flag for 22 and visited the Korean and Vietnam Memorials and the Geographic Center of the Nation Monument in Belle Fourche, SD. The center of America hasn't changed since August 21, 1959, when Hawaii became the 50th state. At some point shortly afterward, the center was marked with a metal pole stuck into a pasture, off of a gravel road behind a ditch, 22 miles north of Belle Fourche, South Dakota. It's still there, and tourists can still drive to it, but Belle Fourche thought that something as important as America's center needed a monument that was more memorable, as well as one that was more accessible. As Teresa Schanzenbach of the Belle Fourche Chamber of Commerce told us, "We haven't even had a post card, because a post card of a fence post really doesn't cut it." So, on August 21, 2007, slightly in advance of the 50th anniversary of Hawaii's statehood, Belle Fourche dedicated its elaborate "Geographic Center of the Nation" monument. It's in town, behind the Visitor Center, close to major highways, parking lots, rest rooms, and the Belle Fourche Pizza Hut. Made of granite, it's designed in the shape of a giant compass, flat on the ground, with a map of the U.S. and Belle Fourche at its center, marked with an official-looking metal disk. Visitors instinctively understand that they should stand on the disk for photos, and you-are-standing-on-the-spot reaction pioneered by the monument at Four Corners. Belle Fourche insists that it's not trying to mislead anyone with its 22-miles-off-center Center, and indeed anyone visiting it during Visitor Center hours can get directions and a map to the real center, a 35-minute drive away. "If you want to go there," said Teresa, "go for it." #RollCallFlag #RollCallFlagfor22 #RollCallGSFMMFlag #FlagsofHonorEscorts #ProjectRollCall www.Projectrollcall.org https://www.instagram.com/p/CRRuXd1rdba/?utm_medium=tumblr

Please join Project Roll Call and Flags of Honor Escorts as we escorted the Roll Call Flag and the Roll Call Flag for 22 as we visited the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument. Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument preserves the site of the June 25 and 26, 1876, Battle of the Little Bighorn, near Crow Agency, Montana, in the United States. It also serves as a memorial to those who fought in the battle: George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry and a combined Lakota-Northern Cheyenne and Arapaho force. Custer National Cemetery, on the battlefield, is part of the national monument. The site of a related military action led by Marcus Reno and Frederick Benteen is also part of the national monument, but is about 3 miles (5 km) southeast of the Little Bighorn battlefield. LT Charles F. Roe and the 2nd Cavalry built the granite memorial in July 1881 that stands today on the top of Last Stand Hill. They also reinterred soldiers' remains near the new memorial, but left stakes in the ground to mark where they had fallen. In 1890 these stakes were replaced with marble markers. The bill that changed the name of the national monument also called for an "Indian Memorial" to be built near Last Stand Hill. Markers honoring the Indians who fought at Little Big Horn, including Crazy Horse, have been added to those of the U.S. troops. On Memorial Day, 1999, the first of five red granite markers denoting where warriors fell during the battle were placed on the battlefield for Cheyenne warriors Lame White Man and Noisy Walking. The warriors' red speckled granite memorial markers dot the ravines and hillsides just as do the white marble markers representing where soldiers fell. Since then, markers have been added for the Sans Arc Lakota warrior Long Road and the Minniconjou Lakota Dog's Back Bone. On June 25, 2003, an "unknown Lakota warrior marker" was placed on Wooden Leg Hill, east of Last Stand Hill to honor a warrior who was killed during the battle, as witnessed and reported by the Northern Cheyenne warrior Wooden Leg. #RollCallFlag #RollCallFlagfor22 #RollCallGSFMMFlag #FlagsofHonorEscorts #ProjectRollCall www.Projectrollcall.org https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ_syzerTKC/?utm_medium=tumblr

Please join Project Roll Call and Flags of Honor Escorts as we escorted the Roll Call Flag and the Roll Call Flag for 22 and visited the Canby Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Located at: 1000678, Canby, OR 97013 Driving north on Highway 99E as you enter Canby, it’s very hard not to notice the Vietnam memorial citizen of the small Willamette Valley town have constructed. As you crest the hill into town, you are greeted by a Bell UH-1 helicopter – better known as a “Huey.” The small park, along Highway 99E at the south entrance of Canby, has been in place since about 2008 and is a reminder of the sacrifices and service of those who served in the military during the Vietnam era. The helicopter is a medevac which had the call sign of “dust off” in 1963. During the Vietnam War, wounded servicemen were airlifted to hospitals within an average of 35 minutes, saving thousands of lives. The memorial, which was started in 2000 took 11 years to complete, with the land, helicopter and other amenities at the park being either donated or purchased through years of fundraising. Most people who live in or around Canby during that time pitched in to make the memorial a reality, and in 2011 it was finished. It was a community effort, with local businesses, government agencies and the local newspaper being heavily involved in making it a reality. “A Hero’s Prayer” was the last piece of the memorial to be finished, and it’s a bronze statue which depicts PFC Gary W. Martini, USMC, Oregon Medal of Honor recipient who was killed in action in Vietnam, with a Vietnamese child by his side. The figure Martini is carrying is U.S. Army Spec-4 Warren E. Newton, a Canby soldier listed as missing in action in Vietnam. The statue was created by Pennsylvania sculptor Wayne Hyde. When you stand at the park, it looks like subjects in the statue are moving toward a red cross, where the helicopter will land. It’s a very powerful image if you take the time and really look at it and think about the war. May Their Service and Sacrifice Never be Forgotten! #RollCallFlag #RollCallFlagfor22 #RollCallGSFMMFlag #FlagsofHonorEscorts #ProjectRollCall www.Projectrollcall.org https://www.instagram.com/p/CQbpvFyLIql/?utm_medium=tumblr

Please join Project Roll Call and Flags of Honor Escorts as we escorted the Roll Call Flag and the Roll Call Flag for 22 on our visit to Mt Rushmore. Mount Rushmore National Memorial is centered on a colossal sculpture carved into the granite face of Mount Rushmore (Lakota Tȟuŋkášila Šákpe, or Six Grandfathers) in the Black Hills in Keystone, South Dakota. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum created the sculpture's design and oversaw the project's execution from 1927 to 1941 with the help of his son, Lincoln Borglum. The sculpture features the 60-foot (18 m) heads of Presidents George Washington (1732–1799), Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826), Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919) and Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865), as recommended by Borglum. The four presidents were chosen to represent the nation's birth, growth, development and preservation, respectively. The memorial park covers 1,278 acres (2.00 sq mi; 5.17 km2) and the actual mountain has an elevation of 5,725 feet (1,745 m) above sea level. South Dakota historian Doane Robinson is credited with conceiving the idea of carving the likenesses of noted figures into the mountains of the Black Hills of South Dakota in order to promote tourism in the region. His initial idea was to sculpt the Needles; however, Gutzon Borglum rejected the Needles because of the poor quality of the granite and strong opposition from the Lakota (Sioux), who consider the Black Hills to be sacred ground; it was originally included in the Great Sioux Reservation. Each president was originally to be depicted from head to waist, but lack of funding forced construction to end on October 31, 1941. #RollCallFlag #RollCallFlagfor22 #FlagsofHonorEscorts #ProjectRollCall www.Projectrollcall.org https://www.instagram.com/p/CQOxsojtXb5/?utm_medium=tumblr
