Roleplay Is Not Dead Nor Doth It Sleep
There's a post going around about how text-based, freeform roleplay is dead, and I was typing up a huge response to this, with an accompanying guide on how to find roleplayer in 2024, when I realized it might have a bigger reach if I made it its own post. So here's that guide.
I hesitate to say that there isn't a problem with the new format of social media making roleplay more difficult to find, but in the desire to make that point, the OP of the original post has left people with the idea that there's no way for them to get into freeform text roleplay in 2024. Which just isn't true! Here, look at all the ways.
Forums
The link to RPG-Directory to find roleplaying forums is a good start. Once you've found a forum RPG, even if you don't join, there's usually an 'advertising' section on that forum where other forum RPGs post their ads - this may help you to find forums that don't advertise on RPG-D.
Another really good forum to find roleplay on is Barbermonger. Barbermonger is focused on connecting people for one-on-one roleplays.
This last one's going to be weird, but it turns out that there are still people seeking roleplay on the Gaia Online forums after all these years. I think this is delightfully retro and then crowd there seems a little older than average. No pre-existing knowledge of Gaia required.
Tumblr
You can also find forum roleplay groups (as well as tumblr and Discord groups) right here on Tumblr. Usually, the thing to do is to use the search function - search for "[genre] rp" or "[fandom] rp" and sort by "latest." (If you sort by Top, you are likely to find dead RPs.) For example, here's fantasy rp, historical rp, and marvel rp. You can also try jcink rp, as most roleplay forums are hosted on Jcink these days, or discord rp, depending on your favored platform.
There are also tumblr blogs specifically dedicated to advertising roleplays. I'm not super familiar with these nowadays, but just in the process of searching those tags above, I found these:
Jcink Tinder
RPG Adverts
RPings
There are more, I just don't know them off the top of my head.
Reddit
Listen, don't run away, I swear it's good now - I swear Reddit is good now -
Reddit is a good place to find Discord roleplays. It's a little heavier on smut-only roleplays than other platforms mentioned here, but it's not impossible to find sexless, plot-based roleplay here either. Most ads are for one on one RP, but you can find groups mixed in here too. The big subreddits for text-based freeform RP seem to be:
r/DiscordRP
r/RoleplayPartnerSearch
r/roleplaying
r/Roleplay
Some of these have weird rules about what you can put in your ad, and I don't remember which ones, so read carefully and don't get discouraged if your ad is initially removed.
Discord
In 2024, Discord is by far the biggest and most popular platform for roleplay, and it has its own native roleplay advertising hubs. Here are a bunch:
roleplay partner hub
Rockin Roleplay
The Roleplay Garden
roleplay help
the roleplay connection
RP Central
Roleplay Central
Roleplay Hub
Barbermonger also has a Discord server
Roleplay Meets: Reborn
RP Hub
The Scribes Guild
DM Rp Village
cherry blossom! roleplay hub
DM-RP
Roleplay Round Table (21+)
The Historical Syndicate (specifically for historical roleplay)
The Roleplayer's Directory
If you can't find the Discord roleplay you want on here, you can also try Discord hub websites, like Disboard. These work similar to tumblr tags - search for [genre] rp or [fandom] rp.
Other
The original post specifically mentions that 'all the old "omegle but for role play" type websites died out ages ago'. This is mostly true, but not quite! There's still Rolechat. It's a little janky, but what it needs more than anything is a bigger user base. Their Discord server is also a good place to find one on one discord roleplay. It is, of course, free, but if you want to support its development, they have a patreon.
Please reblog this post, and add your own tips on how to find roleplay!

you know what hang on i'm taking it out of the tags
@roleplayfinder @rphunter @25plusroleplays @rp-partnerfinder @anotherrpfinder
are all some good rp partner finding blogs that update regularly and i'm aware of, but i'm sure there's others! some that might even suit you better! but these ones are pretty good
if you like discord servers and are over 18, try roleplay meets reborn sorry for the under 18 crowd, there's plenty of other rp servers, just none are laid out quite as well as rmr imo and make it harder to find partners, but they're out there if you look
if you like/don't mind forums, rpnation is fantastic and has roleplayers of all age groups and writing ability, from people who started yesterday to fifty year olds who've been running dice games for thirty years.
if you're an internet veteran like me, gaiaonline is still up and running and waiting for you, and its roleplay recruiting subforum is pretty lively
and then of course there's r/roleplay and r/roleplaypartnersearch and there's even r/dirtypenpals (18+) for those who are looking to primarily write smut
i don't use reddit much, but i know these two are some of the most populous and active rp search subreddits, and that dpp is sort of the king of smut centric rp subreddits
these are just the tip of the iceberg, and if they don't fit your needs they're not your only options. i just know they're active, reliable, and pretty good about having a wide diversity of skill sets which should make it easy for a lot of people to dip their toes in
please
please find roleplay partners
it's a wonderful hobby full of talented, kind people who would kill and die to write your favorite character for you. i promise. i super promise. they're all very friendly (if not a little socially anxious) and most are willing to help you if you're new to writing with a human partner
reminder that being against ai also means being against character.ai and not using character.ai and not interacting with character.ai
i've never talked to chatgpt i've never talked to character.ai i have no interest in talking to a chatbot even if it's fun or based on my comfort character. if we want companies to stop using ai we need to tell them we aren't going to interact with it - so don't.
don't talk to robots. full stop.
#i just#it's such a wonderful hobby if i can throw some links into the abyss to make it easier for ppl idk#its like the least i can do right

Searching for a Roleplay Partner
Hi! Lets start off by telling you a bit about myself. My name is Dani. I’m in my mid 20’s I live in the US in PST time zone. I’ve been roleplaying since I was probably 13 and in my off years I spent a lot of time writing as well. I work a full time job but it’s remote so I reply pretty quickly. Generally I’ll let my partner know if I’m going to have a busy day or be away for any reason. I also go to college as well (I’m an English major ha) buuut it’s summer break so HUZZAH! Now, what I’m looking for in a partner: I’m looking for someone who is open to communication and discussing plot ideas and stuff like that. If I come to you saying that I’m not feeling the plot I don’t want hurt feelings I want us to work together to improve the plot somehow or agree to try something new. I’m not really a fan of premade characters. In my experience they often bring baggage from previous storylines that either halt the progress of the story or just don’t fit with the plot that we have agreed upon, however, this does not mean I absolutely will not accept premade characters. It simply means I may need some convincing. I also need a partner who is going to be flexible. I don’t want one character to constantly be a damsel of sorts while the other is repeatedly swooping in to save the day. Yes drama is good and angst is great but let’s not play into the victim complex more than necessary. As far as post length, literacy, and so on goes, I prefer my partner to give me something good to work with. I’d rather spend a day waiting for a reply and get something with substance that helps move the plot and isn’t distracting with typos etc. than to have a fast back and forth that doesn’t get anywhere. Speaking of moving the plot, WE SHOULD BOTH BE MOVING THE PLOT FORWARD! I do nooooot like having to be the person to constantly put things into action only to get my partners responses and that is all. What I will roleplay: I’m honestly open to anything. I have a few plot ideas in my brain I mostly prefer slice of life plots fantasy or supernatural whatever you prefer to call it and some adventure type stuff. I’m not big on gore or horror so if that’s what you’re looking for I’m not your gal. I can play many characters or one character. I am only interested in playing M/M plots at the moment so please keep that in mind.
