I’m tryna find my own lane, in this freeway of life Just remember home boy there ain’t no free way to life My nigga it’s gon cost you, try not to lose your soul To the rims, hoes, and gold Cause once the devil grab hold, that nigga ain’t letting go And I’m far from religious, I just know right and wrong

CJ Fly - RUDEBWOY ALBUM REVIEW
Tumblr media
I can imagine that being in a group with a guy that has had amazing success can leave you with a chip on your shoulder and make it seem like you have a lot to prove and that you follow up that success. Pro Era is a crew that is full of talented guys that have been rapping for so long now but damn near the whole crew aside from Joey Bada$$ have not been given their flowers and are still pretty underrated. Some have had a lot of recognition and a whole lot of potential but they haven’t put out enough music to really keep our attention. Kirk Knight has seen success as a producer and songwriter but not with either of his two solo albums. Nyck Caution is such a dope rapper that it should be a crime that he isn’t talked about more but he hasn’t put out a solo project since 2016′s Disguise The Limit. The same goes for CJ Fly. Since Pro Era popped on the scene, CJ Fly was one of those rappers that instantly stood out to me because he doesn’t rap like anyone else and he’s a great rapper. His 2013 mixtape, Thee Way Eye See It was heavily slept on but his 2016 project, Flytrap was disappointing to me not because he rapped over different production but it’s just that the quality of the songs weren’t as good and there wasn’t enough variety either. Not too long after the release of his album 8, Statik Selektah tweeted a list of albums that he was working on. Many of those albums did eventually come out such as Saints X Sinners with Millyz, Yuck with Anoyd, and Gran Turismo with Curren$y. RUDEBWOY was on this list of albums along with Statik’s 9th album and a collab album with 2 Chainz that I really wanna hear. Both CJ and Statik have been teasing RUDEBWOY for a while and Statik put out a whole lot more music before this album dropped in addition to the ones I just listed such as TrillStatik with Bun B, Still 1982 with Termanology and Give Thanks with Paul Wall. When I went to the Beast Coast tour, CJ played the title track/lead single off this album. That show was last August and it’s now out. RUDEBWOY is technically CJ Fly’s debut album which is long overdue because he’s that dope of a rapper. An album entirely produced by Statik Selektah is perfect for CJ because these are the types of beats he sounds the best over. The album starts off with Goin’ Thru, which features T’nah who used to be in Pro Era. I’m not sure if she is re-joining Pro Era but I have missed her a lot because she is really unique and talented. She doesn’t have that much solo work but the music that is on her YouTube channel is really good. It’s great to have her back. This was a chill intro and I liked it a lot. I especially liked this one line that CJ had where he said “I done drank so much Patrón, they tryna label me a patron.” The album is called RUDEBWOY because of CJ’s Jamaican heritage and that’s what the title track is all about. “American and Bajan, plus my father's side Jamaican,” he raps. This song is so fun to listen to and it brings back some of those vintage Pro Era vibes. Much like CJ’s parts on Beast Coast’s Snow In The Stadium, CJ’s patois is riddled throughout the album on songs like Rudebwoy and Barrell. The song Show You is fantastic and I love it because CJ takes us on a very detailed tour of Brooklyn. When rappers talk about where they’re from, they don’t usually get as detailed as he does on this song. The video for this song makes you realize how detailed the song is. He takes you through Fort Green, Williamsburg, and Flatbush with lines like “Stashed his hammer in this alley when my dad got locked / Just a couple blocks away from where he had got shot / By this Chinese store on Linden where I had got rocked.” This album is relatively laid-back and songs like Block Party make the album a warm and fun album that is also chill. I always liked the way CJ uses melodies in his raps that don’t really sound like anyone else. I think that has to do with his voice sounding very different. Ever since Griselda emerged on the scene, I was hoping for a Pro Era and Griselda collab and that’s what we get on City We From which features Conway. Statik has done plenty of beats for the guys from Griselda and City We From is a harder beat than the rest of the ones on the album and it’s the perfect beat for Conway to get on. Jooks was a very interesting track to me because it seemed like CJ was paying homage to DMX. His voice sounded deeper and raspier and he was using that flow where he was talking the first parts of the line and putting emphasis on the last couple of words like he was trying to imitate DMX. Some of my favorite DMX songs are stories and I liked the way CJ used the DMX voice and flow to tell a story. The biggest issue I have with this album is that there isn’t too much variety with the beats even though I think the production is great. The final song on this album brings me back to the point I was making about the lesser known Pro Era members not releasing music to get their name out there. The PROS is a posse cut featuring most of the members of Pro Era and it’s the first Pro Era posse cut we’ve heard since Butterflies from 2014′s The Shift EP. I’m guessing Joey and Kirk aren’t on this song because they are on other songs. It’s easy to forget how dope rappers like Dessy Hinds and Rokamouth are because they don’t put out any music but they instantly remind you of how dope they are on this song. I don’t think Chuck Strangers is that strong of a rapper and is a much better producer and I really hope that T’Nah starts to put out more music because she’s been gone for so long and she’s super talented. Nyck Caution killed it as expected and I hope to hear a solo project from him soon because he killed it on the Beast Coast album and Disguise The Limit and Nyck @ Knight were so good. This is one of my favorite beats on the album because it’s the jazzy style of hip hop production that I love Statik Selektah for but I like the swing that the beat has on it. RUDEBWOY really was the album I was hoping it would be and CJ Fly and Statik Selektah did a fantastic job.
