Interview: Kate Clover, "The Apocalypse Dream"

Last month, Kate Clover and her band were back in Switzerland to play at Roessli Bar in Bern, to present her new album The Apocalypse Dream. So about one year after our first interview, I got in touch and Kate kindly agreed to do an interview about her new record before the (amazing and fun once again) show. Join us as we talk about The Apocalypse Dream, writing songs, poetry, and more. Many thanks to Kate for her time and kindness!

Let’s catch up a bit! This is your third EU tour, and you have just completed a long run of shows in Spain. How do you feel?

Kate Clover: I feel good. Every time we come back here, the shows get bigger, we make new fans and friends. It’s starting to feel more and more like home, because we have friends everywhere now. It’s exciting to be back.

I also wanted to talk briefly about your tour with the Hives. How was it ?

It was so fun! Really great shows, very nice guys. I learned a lot watching them play. It was very inspiring.

Let’s talk about The Apocalypse Dream. I loved it, every song is so catchy - I also really liked the album cover. It looks like a movie poster.

That’s what I wanted! I wanted every song to have a hook. For the cover, I wanted it to look like an ad for Los Angeles, but apocalyptic with the palm trees on fire and everything – just a little skew. That was the inspiration behind the album, because it was written during the pandemic in Los Angeles. I tried to capture the way the city felt. Los Angeles is known for films and Hollywood, so I wanted to play on that without being obvious. I am actually happy you picked up on that, because that was the idea.

I feel like it literally matches the album title – I can picture Los Angeles as a paradise, but on the picture, it is on fire.

When I was writing the songs, I came accross this poet that I really like, Charles Plymell. There’s a lot of beautiful imagery in his poems. The words feel like they’re technicolor on the page, like they come to life. After reading a lot of his poetry, everything clicked. I was able to write my lyrics in a very concise and visual manner – which I always did anyway, but that just elevated it. He has a poem called Apocalypse Rose, and I love that idea. So then, when I was thinking more about the title of the album, I thought ‘I feel like I am living in an apocalypse dream right now’. Because it’s paradise, but it’s also apocalyptic. That was the genesis of the ideas.

I remember in our first interview, I asked you about my favorite song from your previous record, Channel Zero. You told me you found the idea while you were driving in your car. For this new album, I read an interview you did for the website Remember the Lightning, in which you mentioned having the idea for the song Like a Domino while you were out and about. Do you get your ideas this way often, just by living your life? Or sitting down in a quiet room writing instead?

I think it’s both. Best case scenario, an idea comes and it’s overwhelming, fighting for life to get out. So you sit down, and it just appears. That’s what you wish for every time, but that’s not possible every moment. There are times where you’ll find a fraction of inspiration, and base everything else around that. But that’s a little bit harder. I do try to write as much as I can, because with that, you get better at choosing your ideas. For me, a lot of writing is editing and being okay with what you’ve written. Because you could rewrite something a hundred times – it’s what’s in you that tells you it’s good or bad. I don’t know sometimes, but I think that practicing only makes that decision making stronger. Every creative mind works differently.

My favorite song from the record is You’ll be the Death of Me. I was wondering how you found the little riff during the chorus.

That’s just melodic play off the chords, sitting down and figuring out what sounds right. The riff is Brandon’s, we write together. The lyrics came because my friend kept going back to this person – she was addicted to this bad relationship. It was conscious decision-making that was obviously leading to the wrong place, but she couldn’t help herself. It’s almost like a relationship can kill your spirit and your soul, but you’ll keep showing up. That was very interesting to me, and I wanted to write about it. It felt natural.

My final question is: raclette or fondue?

I would like to have fondue, only because I haven’t had good fondue yet!

“Hey, don’t get into trouble!” Se-ri chided, straightening herself up, “You’re not supposed to be my bodyguard anymore.” 

“But I’m your boyfriend.” Jeong-hyeok protested, which to him by virtue should outrank the profession.
