21/11/2023-Lakeside and home
Photos taken in this set are of: 1. Viburnum, Black-eyed Susans and more in the garden. 2, 3, 4 and 8. Views on a lovely lunch time walk at Lakeside including autumnal colour and a pretty clump of fleabane seed heads. 5, 6, 9 and 10. Two beautiful Roe Deers which it was enchanting to watch and connect with on my lunch time walk. 7. Sky out the back this evening.
I was also excited to see a Cormorant diving and swimming on beach lake and a Kestrel for the second day running, flying over the meadows seen from afar. Tufted Ducks again, nice views of Moorhens including one walking along the path, Coot, Great Crested Grebes, Herring Gull, Black-headed Gulls, Robin, Blackbird and Blue Tit, Great Tit and lovely views of Long-tailed Tits flying into a tree overhanging Concorde lake were other bird highlights on the walk. It was great to see my first Blue Tit in the garden for a while at home with Goldfinches, Collared Doves and for the second day running the evocative feel of Greylag Geese flying over always an immersive moment from my room which is lovely good to see as well. Ragwort, wild carrot, white clover, daisy, hawthorn berries, vibrant rose hips and holly berries were other nice plants seen on my walk with geranium in the back garden and rose hips out the front enjoyed at home.

Sound on! This morning, the roe deer/rådjur seemed very upset. I couldn’t spot anything unusual, but I did notice numerous fox tracks in the snow. After a while, she calmed down and rejoined the other roe deer. The sound roe deer make when they are upset is often referred to as a bark or barking call. They use it to signal alarm or warn others of potential danger. Värmland, Sweden (January 28, 2025).

Two months ago I was driving home, right as dusk was falling. A little black roe deer ran out onto the road in front of me. This painting shows what I wish would have happened: a screeching of brakes, a frightening moment for both of us, but ultimately safe passage.
But in reality I didn't even see her coming. Instead there was a huge crash, two ears over the edge of my hood. It took me a second before I realise what had happened and hit the brakes.
I found her quite a ways back, lying on the roadside. Dead. She looked perfect, spare the blood coming from her nose, and the fact the impact had landed her entrails several yards ahead. That same night she was collected by wildlife services. The next morning you'd never have known she was there, only the scratches on the tarmac still bear witness to what happened.
I'm lucky to have gotten out unscathed, Blue sheep was miraculously undamaged too. But I felt godawful about it and still do. I drive even slower these days. Black roe deer are a rarity, they only occur in a small part of the Netherlands. It always makes me happy to see them out and about. To have taken the life of one weighs heavily on my heart. This painting is a small part of me trying to do right by her and remember her. A little roe deer keychain now hangs off Blue sheep's keys too, to always remind me when I go out for a drive.

With each breath, the air hangs heavy and still,
Emotions freeze, yet warmth lingers at will.

Painting I was commissioned to do for an upcoming book about my local nature reserve here in North Yorkshire, UK.
All the digital paintings i made for the book are of real places. It was so lovely to be asked to illustrate my home and fun trying to capture the seasonal light and mood of somewhere I know so well!
Here is a lesser spotted woodpecker visiting the area in winter. Pictured with barn owl, roe deer and gulls coming into roost on the floodwater.
