Everywhere I go, there are signs which say, take nothing but photographs, leave nothing but footprints. And yet, I find these rock cairns everywhere. The park rangers knock them down regularly, because they interfere with (among other things) the lizards environment and their habitations. Why then do people persist in building them? Leaving a mark, however temporary? I acknowledge the skill and time it takes to build them. Getting the balance right is damned tricky, but ,,,,, do the ranger's and parks administration admonitions mean nothing?

Awfully tired of the work-grind... Who wants to go and stack rocks while wandering on a foggy beach?

Sacred stones were used by my people originally for marking burial sites, boundary lines, directions to water and food sources, ceremonial sites, and more. They marked both time and space.
Colonial settlers then started using rock "cairns" to mark trails.
Then many thought it cute, and what began as navigation has gotten out of hand and the land is being disturbed at an alarming rate.
Cairns have been scientifically proven to kill living species. They kill endangered aquatic species that risk being completely extinct.
When you lift a rock out of the earth or water, it can result in fatalities. It dries out and or disturbes living creature's habitats and nests.
A trail marker, vortex idea, or "memorial," is then turned into an act of murder. Even if you the perpetrator didn’t mean to.
Why continue to do more damage when you absolutely know better? Instead, leave a living memorial. Plant a native tree.
People who act defensive about cairns being okay and become aggressive about it are showing signs of mental illness and lack of intelligence concerning the topic.
Take the bigfoot challenge!
I’ve seen a few ~aesthetic~ photos of rock stacks in rivers recently and this is just a reminder that you are destroying habitat when you move rocks around in rivers and streams.
In addition to dragonfly nymphs, rocky river beds are home to lots of other larval invertebrates like damselflies, mayflies, water beetles, caddisflies, stoneflies, and a bunch of dipterans. Not to mention lots of fish and amphibians!
Plus large scale rock stacking can change the flow of a stream and lead to increased erosion.
Anyway dragonfly for admiration:

cairns
last night i dreamt i was at a gathering, perhaps a party, i may have even been the host. it was filled with people i would have recognized on the street, but we had never been close, never spoken much, if any at all
made up of people unaccustomed to one another's company, it was quiet gathering, so i felt compelled to do a trick i had been practicing but hadn't mastered yet. i walked towards one wall of the room and slowly and awkwardly up the wall. when i reached the ceiling, i steeled myself against a rising fear, and i stepped onto the ceiling and walked, upside down, slowly to the center of the room
no one appeared to notice, or maybe out of embarrassment for me, for themselves, for this awkward gathering as a whole, they pretended not to notice.
then i felt my feet start to slip and i was falling head first towards the floor and i woke up

baby’s first fakemon 🎉
Brairn
Type: Grass/Rock
Height: 8’0” 2.4 m Weight 247.0 lbs 112.0 kg
Ability: Wayfinder, Sturdy (Hidden)
Wayfinder is the Brairn evolution family’s signature ability. This Pokémon’s moves will always hit, but it will always move last.
Pokédex Entry 1: Brairn prefer to remain stationary if possible. Hikers can reliably use them as cairns.
Pokédex Entry 2: It is believed that Brairn originated from the emotions and spirit of hikers on trails.
Origins: Brairn appear to be based on mossy cairns.
Etymology: Bryophyta, the taxonomic division of moss + Cairn
Brairn evolve into ??? at level 31.
#gari draws#nintendo#pokemon#fakemon#brairn#this fakemon was born from my frustration at pokedoku that there’s literally three grass/rock pokemon and none of them are moss rocks#like dude do you know how many times they play that category i already got dex for the three (3) pokemon give it a rest 😭#thought a little bit about theming and remembered how people make psas about rock stacking bc the tourist ones can get people lost#if they think they’re cairns and so we got this guy#the number one thing preventing me from posting them months ago was the fact that i didn’t have an ability#and then i had real like stuff once i actually figured one out which was funny bc this was 90% done too#graphic design is not my passion#the aligning shit pissed me off so bad#i think i lowballed the weight but it came to me in a dream (random number in my head)#their cry sounds like you’re shaking pebbles probably#i already designed the evo the same time as this but i just dont have dex entries#also i need to draw them officially they were designed in apple notes ✨#then after that i want to design a ground/fairy fakemon#i was really into fairies as a kid but unfortunately that just manifested in reading fictional book series and writing group fiction#on message boards about it#so i need to look up mythology for inspiration

Mouse's Ways to Witch#4: Rock-stacks and trail markers (“cairns”) are an ancient practice and can even be spiritual to some people. However, rock-stacks made out of and in the way of a running creek should be immediately kicked down or never made in the first place. River and creek stones are homes (sometimes NESTS) to many aquatic animals and moving or removing them can ruin ecosystems. Please make cairns on your own property with your own rocks and remember to stack responsibly!
