Who is a Head and Neck Surgeon?
A head and neck surgeon is a medical specialist with extensive training in diagnosing and treating conditions that affect the ears, nose, throat, thyroid, salivary glands, and other structures in the head and neck region. This field overlaps with otolaryngology (ENT), but head and neck surgeons often focus on more complex issues, including tumors, cancers, and reconstructive surgeries.
These surgeons are experts in handling delicate surgeries involving the voice box, sinuses, skull base, and lymph nodes, along with cosmetic and reconstructive procedures aimed at restoring function and appearance after trauma or cancer treatment.
Common Conditions Treated by a Head and Neck Surgeon
Head and neck surgeons treat a wide range of conditions, including:
Thyroid and Parathyroid Disorders: Thyroid nodules, goiters, and cancers often require surgical intervention. A head and neck surgeon performs delicate thyroidectomies and other related procedures.
Salivary Gland Tumors: Tumors in the salivary glands can be benign or malignant. Surgery is often necessary to remove these tumors while preserving nerve function.
Head and Neck Cancers: These include cancers of the throat, larynx (voice box), mouth, and nasal passages. A head and neck surgeon may perform procedures like laryngectomies or complex tumor resections to remove cancerous growths.
Sinus and Nasal Cavity Disorders: Conditions like chronic sinusitis or polyps that don’t respond to medical treatment may require surgery. Surgeons can perform minimally invasive procedures to restore proper sinus function.
Throat and Voice Disorders: Head and neck surgeons treat conditions that affect the vocal cords, such as vocal nodules, polyps, and cancers, often restoring the patient’s ability to speak and swallow.
Trauma and Reconstructive Surgery: Trauma to the face and neck, such as fractures or soft tissue injuries, may require reconstructive surgery to restore both function and aesthetics. Surgeons also work on reconstructing areas after cancer removal.

Doctors use transoral robotic surgery to treat head and neck cancer. They may also use it for obstructive sleep apnea. It can often lead to better surgical outcomes than other surgery types. Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) is a type of robotic surgery for conditions affecting the head and neck. Instead of making an incision in the skin, a surgeon performing TORS accesses the surgical area directly through the mouth. It is becoming more common. A 2020 study of 73 hospitals found that the use of robotic surgery increased from 1.8% in 2012 to 15.1% in 2018. Read on to learn more about TORS, including what doctors use it for, what the procedure involves, and how effective it is. What is transoral robotic surgery used for? In 2009, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the Da Vinci system — the specific robotic system used in TORS — to remove both benign (noncancerous) and malignant (cancerous) tumors in the head and neck region. This includes tumors affecting tissues of the: oral cavity (mouth) oropharynx (middle throat), which also includes:the base of your tongue the soft palate the tonsils larynx (voice box) hypopharynx (lower throat) Doctors have also used TORS as a surgical option for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). It helps open up the space in the back of the throat and may involve removing the tonsils or reducing the size of the base of the tongue. In some situations, doctors have used TORS to treat thyroid cancer. This involves removing the thyroid gland, which is a procedure called a thyroidectomy. Who shouldn’t have TORS? TORS isn’t suitable for everyone. In certain situations, a doctor may suggest a different treatment approach. Your age and overall health play a role in these decisions. Additionally, your anatomy may play a part. Depending on how the tissues of your mouth and throat are structured, a surgeon may be unable to access the surgical site easily or safely. When doctors use TORS to remove a tumor, tumor size and location are important. TORS may not be feasible for large or extensively spread tumors. If the tumor is very close to important blood vessels or nerves, TORS may carry too many risks. How do you prepare for transoral robotic surgery? Before performing TORS, a surgeon will want to get a better picture of the area where they’ll be operating and of your overall health. To do this, they’ll typically order imaging tests and a variety of blood tests. As TORS involves operating in and around the tissues of the mouth and throat, it can potentially affect functions like swallowing and speech. Due to this, you’ll meet with a speech-language therapist before your surgery. The speech-language therapist will evaluate your swallowing and speech. They’ll also discuss how TORS may affect these functions and what to expect during recovery after surgery. If you’re taking medications, your doctor will give you specific instructions on which medications you need to adjust prior to TORS. Examples of medications that may need to be adjusted before surgery are blood thinners and certain medications for diabetes or pain. Additionally, you’ll be asked to fast in the hours leading up to TORS. This means you won’t be able to eat or drink anything, save for small sips of water, after a certain point before your surgery. What happens during transoral robotic surgery? Surgeons perform TORS while you’re lying down on an operating table. A healthcare professional will give you general anesthesia, which means you won’t be conscious or feel any pain during your surgery. A device called a retractor will be used to keep your mouth open. It also helps to better expose the tissues of your mouth and throat so a surgeon can access them more readily. During TORS, the surgeon will be seated at a panel that controls the robotic system that will perform the surgery. This system includes a 3D, high definition camera and robotic arms with different surgical instruments.
The surgeon will position the camera to allow a good view of the area they’ll be operating on. They’ll then use the surgical instruments to perform the operation. When the operation is complete, the surgeon can use the instruments to close any surgical wounds with sutures. After this, they’ll remove the surgical instruments and camera and take you to the recovery room. What is recovery like after transoral robotic surgery? After TORS, you’ll be taken to the recovery room. During this time, hospital staff will monitor your vital signs as you emerge from general anesthesia. During the first 48 hours after TORS, throat pain and trouble swallowing are common. Medications can help with pain during this time. A speech-language therapist will also work with you to help you eat and drink safely. You may also have a nasogastric tube to help ensure that you get adequate nutrition and don’t inhale food into your lungs, which can lead to pneumonia. A nasogastric tube runs through your nose and into your stomach. A healthcare professional will remove it when you can swallow better on your own. You’ll likely need to stay in the hospital for a few days after TORS. When you’re able to go home, you’ll be given instructions on how to care for yourself and when you can start doing certain activities again. Be sure to follow these closely. The exact recovery time can vary from person to person. However, you’ll likely need at least 6 weeks off to completely recover from your operation. A surgeon will also want to have a follow-up with you to see how you’re recovering. During this visit, you may also have additional tests, such as imaging tests. How effective is transoral robotic surgery? A 2020 study looked at people with early stage oropharyngeal cancer who had either TORS or nonrobotic surgery. People having TORS had a slightly higher 5-year overall survival rate of almost 5% than those having nonrobotic surgery. The researchers also found that, compared with nonrobotic surgery, TORS was associated with: lower rates of positive margins, which is when cancer cells are still detectable around the edges of the removed tissue lower use of chemoradiation after surgery, a combination of cancer treatments A 2020 review of four studies compared TORS with open surgery for head and neck cancer. When compared with open surgery, TORS was associated with a shorter hospital stay and fewer risks during and after surgery. However, the study authors noted that they didn’t observe a difference between the two approaches in terms of cancer outcomes. There were no significant differences in positive margins or survival rates. A 2020 study found that TORS had a similar success and complication rate to other types of surgery for OSA. Its effects on oxygen saturation levels and sleepiness were also similar to those of other types of OSA surgery. What are the risks of transoral robotic surgery? As with any type of surgery, TORS carries a variety of risks. These include: a reaction to the general anesthesia used significant throat or neck pain excessive bleeding infection damage to your lips, teeth, or gums tongue swelling tongue numbness or weakness speech changes a blockage of your airway A 2017 study of 122 TORS operations found that 19 people (16%) experienced a major complication that was directly related to the TORS procedure. Older age and a larger area of removal were associated with an increased risk of major complications. A 2024 study specifically looked at swallowing and speech outcomes after TORS for oropharyngeal cancer. It found that most people receiving TORS had healthy long-term swallowing and speech function after their procedure. Takeaway TORS is a type of robotic surgery that may be used for head and neck cancers or for OSA. Instead of making an incision in the skin, a surgeon uses a robotic system to access the surgical site through your mouth.
TORS is generally associated with shorter hospital stays. However, you’ll likely need several weeks at home to recover after TORS. Potential risks of the procedure include bleeding, infections, and airway blockages. Before deciding on TORS as a surgical approach, be sure to have an open discussion with a surgeon about its benefits and risks. ### What is‌ Transoral Robotic Surgery? So let's discover the types of Erectile dysfunction treatments to find out which is the best option among all.
Major Treatment Options Available for ED
Oral Medications or ED Pills
Oral medications are the first go-to option that a person thinks about. To increase the blood flow in the penis or for erection, patients take different medicines such as sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), and vardenafil (Levitra). The oral medication ED treatment option is not adequate for the long term, and it also has side effects like headaches.
Dr. Nadeem Khan, the esteemed owner of Cross Border Care and a leading medical consultant in India, is renowned for his exceptional expertise in brain tumor surgery in India, pituitary tumor surgery in india, Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery in India, Best Kidney Transplant Surgery in India, and robotic prostatectomy surgery in India. Vacuum Erection Device (VED)
Vacuum Erection Device is a non-invasive device also known as a penile pump. It helps to achieve an erection by creating a vacuum surrounding the penis, which draws blood into it. To keep the erection going, a constriction ring is then positioned at the base. For many men, this is a safe and effective procedure.
Sometimes, men don't like the concept of a vacuum. However, it is a reliable option one can opt to restore erection function without oral medications.
Penile injections
To improve penile blood flow, injectable medications that are directly used are called penile injections. The procedure is used primarily by those who don't want to take oral meditation. This treatment also has side effects like pain or bleeding in the injection area.
Testosterone Replacement
Temporary stress or long-term circulatory disorders that lower blood flow to the penis are the causes of ED. Low testosterone, however, may be a factor in problems getting and keeping an erection.
If your testosterone levels are low, reach out to a doctor to determine whether beginning a testosterone treatment would assist your ED symptoms. Depending on your specific symptoms, your doctor may advise testosterone replacement therapy or attempt it in conjunction with another ED treatment option, even though it is not recommended as a first-line, stand-alone treatment for ED.
Penile Implants
Penile Implants are one of the most popular choices among patients with erectile dysfunction. It is a surgical procedure that takes 40 to 50 minutes, where a two-piece or three-piece device is placed in the erection chambers of the penis.
As per top urologists in India, it is not a complex surgery and takes minimal time. One of the advantages of Penile Implants surgery is it enables patients to control precisely when and how long an erection lasts reliably. And it has a high satisfaction rate as compared to other treatments.
Conclusion
Men who are dealing with erectile dysfunction treatments sometimes get confused about which type of treatment is best. Understanding each type and how it works can help you in making the right decision.
Each treatment option has its pros and cons. The choice depends on the patient's health condition and preferences. Understanding Thyroid Cancer Surgery: What You Need to Know
Thyroid cancer is a condition that affects thousands of individuals every year, leading many to seek surgical intervention as part of their treatment plan. Understanding thyroid cancer surgery is crucial for patients and their families to make informed decisions and navigate the journey toward recovery. In this article, we will delve into the key aspects of thyroid cancer surgery, from its types and procedures to post-operative care and long-term considerations.
Types of Thyroid Cancer Surgery
Thyroid cancer surgery typically involves the removal of part or all of the thyroid gland, depending on the extent and nature of the cancer. The main types of thyroid cancer surgery include:
Thyroidectomy: This procedure involves the complete removal of the thyroid gland and is often recommended for more advanced or aggressive forms of thyroid cancer.
Lobectomy: In cases where the cancer is confined to one lobe of the thyroid gland, a lobectomy may be performed to remove only the affected lobe, preserving the function of the remaining thyroid tissue.
Near-total or subtotal thyroidectomy: This involves removing almost all of the thyroid gland while leaving a small amount of tissue behind, usually to maintain some thyroid function.
Minimally Invasive Surgery: Techniques such as endoscopic or robotic-assisted thyroid surgery are becoming more common. They offer smaller incisions, reduced scarring, and faster recovery than traditional open surgery.
Procedures and Precautions
Before undergoing thyroid cancer surgery, patients will typically undergo a thorough evaluation, including imaging tests, blood work, and sometimes fine-needle aspiration biopsy, to confirm the diagnosis and assess the extent of the cancer. It's essential to follow pre-operative instructions provided by the healthcare team, which may include fasting before surgery, discontinuing certain medications, and arranging for transportation to and from the hospital.
During the surgery, the surgeon will carefully remove the affected thyroid tissue while taking precautions to avoid damage to nearby structures such as the parathyroid glands and recurrent laryngeal nerves, which are vital for calcium regulation and vocal cord function, respectively. Advanced techniques like intraoperative nerve monitoring help enhance surgical precision and reduce the risk of complications.
Post-Operative Care and Recovery:
After thyroid cancer surgery, patients will require diligent post-operative care to support healing and manage any potential side effects. This may include:
Pain management: Medications or techniques to alleviate discomfort at the surgical site.
Monitoring thyroid hormone levels: Since the thyroid gland plays a crucial role in hormone production, patients may need thyroid hormone replacement therapy to maintain optimal levels.
Follow-up appointments: Regular check-ups with the healthcare team to monitor recovery, assess thyroid function, and address any concerns or complications.
Lifestyle adjustments: Adopting a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and stress management, can promote overall well-being and support recovery.
Long-Term Considerations and Conclusion :
Thyroid cancer surgery is often successful in treating the disease, especially when diagnosed early and managed comprehensively. However, patients must remain vigilant about their health and attend follow-up appointments as their healthcare providers recommend. Long-term considerations may include:
Ongoing monitoring of thyroid function.
Surveillance for recurrence or metastasis.
Addressing any potential long-term effects of surgery, such as scar management or voice changes.

The Future of Endoscopic Thyroid Surgery: What's Next?
Endoscopic thyroid surgery in mumbai has revolutionized the way thyroid conditions are treated, offering patients a less invasive and more precise option for surgery. As technology continues to advance, the future of endoscopic thyroid surgery looks promising, with new techniques and innovations on the horizon. In this blog post, we'll explore the current state of endoscopic thyroid surgery and discuss what the future holds for this groundbreaking approach to thyroid treatment.
Endoscopic thyroid surgery, also known as minimally invasive thyroid surgery, involves the use of small incisions and a tiny camera to access and remove the thyroid gland or thyroid nodules. This approach offers numerous benefits over traditional open surgery, including smaller scars, less pain, faster recovery, and reduced risk of complications. As a result, endoscopic thyroid surgery has become increasingly popular among patients and surgeons alike.
One of the most significant advancements in endoscopic thyroid surgery is the development of robotic-assisted techniques. Robotic systems allow surgeons to perform highly precise and complex procedures with greater dexterity and control. This can be especially beneficial for delicate thyroid surgeries, where the thyroid gland is located near critical structures such as the vocal cords and parathyroid glands. Robotic-assisted endoscopic thyroid surgery has the potential to further improve patient outcomes and expand the range of conditions that can be treated using minimally invasive techniques.
Another area of innovation in endoscopic thyroid surgery is the use of advanced imaging technologies. High-resolution ultrasound, intraoperative nerve monitoring, and fluorescent imaging agents are being integrated into endoscopic procedures to enhance visualization and improve surgical accuracy. These technologies can help surgeons identify and protect critical structures, such as the recurrent laryngeal nerve and parathyroid glands, reducing the risk of complications and improving patient safety.
In addition to technological advancements, the future of endoscopic thyroid surgery also involves the development of new surgical approaches and instruments. For example, single-incision endoscopic thyroidectomy, which involves performing the entire surgery through a single small incision, is gaining traction as a way to further minimize scarring and improve cosmetic outcomes. New endoscopic instruments and devices are also being designed to make procedures more efficient and effective, allowing surgeons to tackle a wider range of thyroid conditions with minimally invasive techniques.
As endoscopic thyroid surgery continues to evolve, it is also likely to become more accessible to patients. Currently, endoscopic thyroid surgery is primarily performed at specialized centers by experienced surgeons. However, as the techniques and technologies become more widespread and standardized, it is expected that more surgeons will be trained in minimally invasive thyroid surgery, making it available to a larger number of patients.
The future of endoscopic thyroid surgery also holds promise for the treatment of more complex thyroid conditions. While the majority of endoscopic thyroid surgeries are currently performed for benign thyroid nodules and small thyroid cancers, ongoing research and clinical trials are exploring the feasibility of using minimally invasive techniques for larger or more advanced thyroid tumors. As the evidence supporting the safety and efficacy of endoscopic thyroid surgery for these conditions grows, it is likely that the approach will be increasingly adopted for a broader range of thyroid diseases.
In conclusion, the future of endoscopic thyroid surgery is bright, with new technologies, techniques, and approaches on the horizon. Robotic-assisted surgery, advanced imaging technologies, and the development of new instruments are poised to further improve the precision and safety of endoscopic thyroid procedures. As these advancements continue to unfold, endoscopic thyroid surgery is expected to become more accessible

Thyroidectomy Surgery: A Comprehensive Overview
Tumblr media
Thyroidectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the partial or complete removal of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland, located in the front of the neck, plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism, growth, and development. Various conditions, such as thyroid cancer, benign thyroid nodules, hyperthyroidism, or goiter, may necessitate the need for a thyroidectomy. This article provides a comprehensive overview of thyroidectomy surgery, including its indications, types, preoperative preparation, surgical techniques, potential complications, and postoperative care.
I. Indications for Thyroidectomy
Thyroidectomy may be recommended for several medical conditions. Thyroid cancer, the most common indication, requires surgical removal to eliminate malignant cells. Benign thyroid nodules causing symptoms such as compression of nearby structures, swallowing difficulties, or aesthetic concerns may also warrant thyroidectomy. Additionally, individuals with hyperthyroidism or an overactive thyroid gland, unresponsive to other treatments, may benefit from a thyroidectomy. Lastly, a significantly enlarged thyroid gland, known as a goiter, that causes breathing difficulties or obstructs the airway may necessitate surgical intervention.
II. Types of Thyroidectomy
Thyroidectomy can be classified into three main types: total thyroidectomy, subtotal thyroidectomy, and lobectomy. Total thyroidectomy involves the complete removal of the thyroid gland, whereas subtotal thyroidectomy removes a large portion, leaving behind a small remnant. Lobectomy, on the other hand, involves the removal of only one lobe of the thyroid gland, usually performed when there are benign nodules or suspicious tumors confined to a single lobe.
III. Preoperative Preparation
Preoperative preparation for thyroidectomy typically involves a comprehensive evaluation of the patient's medical history, physical examination, and diagnostic tests. Blood tests to assess thyroid function, coagulation profile, and general health status are conducted. Imaging studies, such as ultrasound or computed tomography (CT) scans, may be performed to evaluate the size, location, and characteristics of the thyroid gland and surrounding structures. In some cases, a fine-needle aspiration biopsy may be necessary to determine if a nodule is benign or malignant.
IV. Surgical Techniques
Thyroidectomy can be performed through different surgical approaches, including the conventional open approach and minimally invasive techniques. The open approach involves a horizontal or vertical incision in the neck, providing direct access to the thyroid gland. Minimally invasive techniques, such as endoscopic or robotic-assisted thyroidectomy, utilize smaller incisions and specialized instruments, resulting in reduced scarring and faster recovery.
V. Potential Complications
Although thyroidectomy is generally safe, there are potential complications associated with the procedure. These may include temporary or permanent damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerve, leading to voice changes or hoarseness; injury to the parathyroid glands, which regulate calcium levels in the body, resulting in hypocalcemia; bleeding; infection; and scar formation. However, the overall incidence of these complications is relatively low, particularly in the hands of experienced surgeons.
VI. Postoperative Care
After thyroidectomy, patients require careful monitoring and appropriate postoperative care. This includes managing pain and discomfort, ensuring proper wound care, and monitoring thyroid hormone levels. Patients may need to take thyroid hormone replacement medication for the rest of their lives to maintain normal thyroid function. Regular follow-up visits are essential to evaluate the patient's recovery, monitor hormone levels, and address any concerns or complications that may arise.
The cost of thyroid surgery in India can vary depending on several factors, including the type of surgery (partial thyroidectomy, total thyroidectomy, etc.), the complexity of the case, the hospital or clinic chosen, the surgeon's fees, and any additional services or tests required. It is important to note that prices can change over time, so it is advisable to contact specific hospitals or clinics in India for the most accurate and up-to-date cost estimates. However, as of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, the approximate cost of thyroid surgery in India can range from $1,000 to $4,000 USD.
Conclusion
Thyroidectomy is a surgical procedure performed for various conditions affecting the thyroid gland. It is crucial to consider the indications, types of thyroidectomy, preoperative preparation, surgical techniques, potential complications, and postoperative care to ensure optimal outcomes for patients undergoing this procedure. With advancements in surgical techniques and careful patient selection, thyroidectomy has become a well-established and generally safe procedure with high success rates. However, individual patient factors and the expertise of the surgical team play crucial roles in determining the overall success of the surgery. Through thorough evaluation, appropriate surgical planning, and comprehensive postoperative care, the goal of thyroidectomy remains the effective treatment of thyroid disorders and improvement in patients' quality of life.
