Saddened by Robert Ryman's passing. Love his work so much. So minimal yet so rich. As I am exploring a few changes (adding clothing to the collection, opening a studio|store ) the follow comment by him resonates: "I like to do something that I don’t exactly know how to do. I don’t like to do things that I know I can do. If I take a certain approach to certain paintings, when I finish the problem, I don’t have to go on with it. I’m more interested in finding what else I can do that’s more of a challenge for me." So here's to change 🍾 More deets soon.. #rip #robertryman #stitchandtickleinspo #changes https://www.instagram.com/p/Btt-M5Vnlz2/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=7u8s4ou12yw5

BACK IN THE BOOKSHOP: ROBERT RYMAN - USED PAINT (2009) • In this first book-length study of Robert Ryman, Suzanne Hudson traces the artist's production from his first paintings in the early 1950s, many of which have never been exhibited or reproduced, to his recent gallery shows. Ryman's largely white-on-white paintings represent his careful working over of painting's conventions at their most radically reduced. Through close readings of the work, Hudson casts Ryman as a painter for whom painting was conducted as a continuous personal investigation. Ryman's method—an act of ''learning by doing''—as well as his conception of painting as ''used paint'' sets him apart from second-generation abstract expressionists, minimalists, or conceptualists. • Ryman (born in 1930) is a self-taught artist who began to paint in earnest while working as a guard at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in the 1950s. Hudson argues that Ryman's approach to painting developed from quotidian contact with the story of modern painting as assembled by MoMA director and curator Alfred Barr and rendered widely accessible by director of the education department Victor D'Amico and colleagues. Ryman's introduction to artistic practice within the (white) walls of MoMA, Hudson contends, was shaped by an institutional ethos of experiential learning. (Others who worked at the MoMA during these years include Lucy Lippard, who married Ryman in 1961; Dan Flavin, another guard; and Sol LeWitt, a desk assistant.) • Available via our website and in the bookshop. • #worldfoodbooks #robertryman #suzannehudson (at WORLD FOOD BOOKS)

Its not a comic book today, it’s a coloring book! A very special one! I love coloring with crayons - all of my pop culture pieces for @galleries1988 and the majority of my prints were originally colored with crayon. The reason I enjoy it so much is coloring gets your brain into that meditative “blank” state brought on by simple repetition. The same thing happens to me when I’m making a patch on my modular synthesizer, which is why I still enjoy making the #dailybleeps after all these years! Anyways, these days there are lots of so-called “adult coloring books” that push the mindfulness you can achieve through coloring, only I kept hearing more and more from friends and family that while they enjoyed coloring to de-stress, the overly cluttered line work busyness of those books made it impossible to color a page in a single sitting and in fact led to MORE stress as a result! So I decided to remedy that problem with the simplest coloring book ever made! Slow Down has pages with one or two simple shapes you can color in or around - color everything (the shape) or color nothing (the space around it) - and it features a series of questions aimed at shifting your view of the world ever so slightly. I had so much fun making this one. The highest praise I’ve received for Slow Down was from @vcolaiz (who wrote THE #robertryman monograph for Phaidon) : "full of questions but no answers and therefore very dangerous and subversive... you need one.” If you follow me here because of my pop culture drawings, or my music (thank you!), I invite you to check out my books - they are my true life’s work and very much where my heart is! And if you already follow my comics work, there’s more on the way very very soon! Thanks so much for your support, I’m truly grateful to have the opportunity to share with you in these unusual times ❤️ LINK IN BIO as the saying goes! #bookstagram #giftidea #etsyshop #etsysellersofinstagram #artistsoninstagram #toddwebb #toddbot #shopsmall #indieartist #supportsmallbusiness #cartoonist #books #artistsbooks #smallpress #coloringbook #minimalist #minimalistcoloringbook #slowdown #simple #meditation #mindfulness #minimalism https://www.instagram.com/p/CFmoYkjhLFe/?igshid=fyx7l22vi9vg

We took a trip out to the Dia:Beacon on Saturday. I’m still processing what I saw there, and words just won’t cut it. These photos won’t either, but the experience was too phenomenal not to share✌️ __________ #diabeacon #riggiogalleries #contemporaryart #sculpture #michaelheizer #danflavin #robertryman #louisebourgeois #richardserra (at Dia:Beacon)
