Zenit KAZAN had to work hard in the first two sets of their semi-final game of the 2017 CEV Volleyball Champions League - Men before dominating BERLIN Recycling Volleys in set three (25-21, 25-22, 25-13).
SET1: The first set of the Final Four in Rome, even though won by Zenit KAZAN, showed that the BR Volleys “deserve to be here” as coach Roberto Serniotti said in his yesterday’s interview. The German team stayed close behind Zenit for most part of the set, doing so till the very end, defending the first set-ball (20-24) in a beautiful rally before coach Alekno’s men won it 25-21. SET2: BERLIN scored the first points of set No. 2 and the score remained tied 7-7, before the Challenge System verified a block-touch and sent both teams to the bench for a first technical time-out. BERLIN’s captain Robert Kromm evened the score again at 13 and soon his team were leading by two points until Anderson’s service ace leveled it out at for a 19-19. A hard point-for-point fight ensued, eventually won by Zenit KAZAN with Leon behind the service line (a double ace for a 25-22).
SET3: Zenit started asserting their dominance in the third set, leading 8-3 before the first technical time-out, after Alexander Butko’s ace. BR Volleys’ net touch fault challenge stopped the game for a moment but did not change the score of 13-5 for KAZAN. The Germans’ defensive attempts got the crowd cheering but the match’s fate was soon sealed 25-13.

Volley Champions League Results - Zenit KAZAN, PERUGIA and Zaksa keep immaculate record
The four-time gold medallists of the CEV Volleyball Champions League, Zenit KAZAN dropped one set in their matchup with Germany’s VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN (3-1; 25-13, 23-25, 25-13, 25-21), and yet the Russian armada still keeps a perfect record in Pool C with maximum nine points from the three matches they have contested this far. Vital Heynen, head coach of VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, could not keep his promise he would buy a crate of beer to each supporter in attendance, in case of a sensational home victory by his team. “We took the second set against Zenit KAZAN, and not many teams are able to do that,” he said. “The guys did very well. But I still hate losing, especially if it is that close.”

Poland reigning national champions Zaksa KEDZIERZYN-KOZLE were close to pulling out a 3-0 victory in their matchup with Dinamo MOSCOW – and even though they dropped a nail-biting third set, they still came out on top (3-1; 25-23, 25-21, 28-30, 25-20) to record their third straight win in Pool A. Zaksa head coach Ferdinando De Giorgi commented: “It just feels great! We had travelled to Moscow very motivated to play a good match but we knew it was not going to be that easy for us, especially because only a couple of days ago we had played the finals of the national cup back home in Poland. This means that we were not fully charged, so to speak, but still we delivered an excellent performance, with my players remaining focussed from start to end.”

Italy’s Sir Sicoma Colussi PERUGIA also added a third straight victory to their record – doing so only a couple of days after the announcement that they will play host to the Final Four tournament in late April. The ‘Block Devils’ made up for a slow start to pull out a 3-2 victory in their much-anticipated home match with Russia’s Belogorie BELGOROD (11-25, 25-14, 31-29, 18-25, 15-13). Ivan Zaytsev, star player of Sir Sicoma Colussi PERUGIA: “It feels really good that we were able to claim a victory under these circumstances. My teammates played a very good match and we could change its course after a shaky start. We started playing our game from the second set. It was a difficult match for me because I know many of their players and we have played together before, but of course I am just over the moon with this victory.”

Arkas IZMIR beat PARIS Volley 3-1 (25-20, 25-17, 15-25, 25-22) in the French capital to cement their second place in Pool C. Germany’s BERLIN Recycling Volleys rallied to a 3-0 win (25-18, 25-23, 25-16)in their away match with Dukla LIBEREC to claim the provisional leadership in Pool B, waiting for Resovia and CIVITANOVA to lock horns on Thursday night. Roberto Serniotti, head coach of BERLIN Recycling Volleys: “It was a good match. We were a little bit nervous because we know that Dukla can play really well at home. We were well prepared, especially to counter Adrian Patucha and it was a surprise for us that he did not play. The turning point of the match came at the end of the second set.”

There was much to celebrate also for Belgium’s Volleyball family as Knack ROESELARE beat Halkbank ANKARA early in the afternoon (3-1; 26-24, 25-19, 24-26, 25-23) and Noliko MAASEIK followed suit with a hard-fought 3-2 home win over ISTANBUL BBSK (25-22, 25-21, 17-25, 21-25, 15-11). Daniel Castellani, head coach of Noliko MAASEIK: “I’m very happy with our first victory in this edition of the CEV Volleyball Champions League. We lost control and our level went down in the third and fourth sets, but we were able to regroup and produce our best performance in the tiebreak.”
