Today's #SJComix365 is Roberta Gregory's seminal comic series, "Naughty Bits" (pub. by @Fantagraphics) which ran from 1991 to 2004, totalling 40 issues. Naughty Bits is the story of Midge McCracken, (who stars in another of Gregory's comics under the title Bitchy Bitch). McCracken, aka Bitchy Bitch, is an everyday woman angry at the world, who frequently explodes with rage. (Bitchy Bitch also has a lesbian counterpart named Bitchy Butch. Everyone following along here?) ...Many of the stories are inspired by Gregory's college days, before she identified as queer and was still meddling with a largely disappointing hetero dating scene. The comics could be described as funny, jarring, idiosyncratic and too believable not to be true (an earlier issue shows young McCracken getting on birth control for the first time and dealing with all the hormonal fuckery that it entails for many women.) Gregory's trailblazing feminist and queer comics began many decades ago, so there's a phenomenal backlog of titles to check out (we will touch on others later in the year). But Naughty Bits stands out as one of the first truly "slice of life" comics about women to reach a mass audience.
