Staff Pick of the Week
I was perusing the stacks in Special Collections and the children’s book Frog Went a-Courtin' by John Langstaff caught my eye because of the wonderful pictures by Russian illustrator Feodor Rojankovsky.  Our copy is a first edition that was published in 1955 in New York by Harcourt, Brace and Company. It was the recipient of the Caldecott Medal for illustration in 1956.
Frog Went a-Courtin' is a retelling of a Scottish folk song that first appeared in Robert Wedderburn's Complaynt of Scotland in 1548 under the name "The Frog cam to the Myl dur." The introduction of John Langstaff’s retelling notes that the story was “written down in Scotland more than 400 years ago, but it has always been the kind of story that was told and sung to children, instead of being read to them.”
The basic premise of the story is that Frog wants to marry Miss Mouse, but first must ask for permission from Uncle Rat (an antiquated practice in my opinion). Once Frog and Miss Mouse decide to get married, all sorts of other creatures like bugs, birds, and raccoons get to work preparing a wedding celebration. The story ends with Old Tom Cat crashing the party. In the original story the cat devours all the wedding guests, but luckily in this version Frog and Miss Mouse end up in France on their honeymoon. Frog Went a-Courtin' has been adapted many time over the years, and has even been covered by Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen.
John Langstaff (1920-2005) was a concert baritone, and early music revivalist, and the founder of the Christmas Revels, a modern-day theatrical celebration of the winter solstice that draws from folk traditions of many cultures. Langstaff had a long career in music education, as well as writing over 25 children’s books.
Feodor Rojankovsky (1891-1970) was born Mitava, Russia. He was artistically inclined from a young age and ended up studying at the Moscow Fine Arts Academy, but left to serve as an infantry officer with the Russian army during World War I in 1914. Several years later, he began making children's book illustrations for the Ukrainian Republic during the Russian Revolution, but was conscripted into the White Army in 1919 and soon became a prisoner-of-war in Poland. He stayed in Poland after the war and worked as an art director for both a fashion magazine and a book publishing company. Eventually he moved to Paris, and while there produced his first children’s book for a Western publisher, Daniel Boone in 1931 (we have a later edition published in 1945 our holdings). In 1941, Rojankovsky moved to the United States and continued to work in book illustration until he died.
On a totally coincidental note, both John Langstaff and Feodor Rojankovsky were born on Christmas Eve, December 24! So we would like to wish them both an early birthday anniversary.

Cecil Taylor
Tumblr media
Cecil Percival Taylor (March 25, 1929 – April 5, 2018) was an American pianist and poet.
Taylor was classically trained and was one of the pioneers of free jazz. His music is characterized by an energetic, physical approach, resulting in complex improvisation often involving tone clusters and intricate polyrhythms. His technique has been compared to percussion. Referring to the number of keys on a standard piano, Val Wilmer used the phrase "eighty-eight tuned drums" to describe Taylor's style. He has been referred to as being "like Art Tatum with contemporary-classical leanings".
Early life and education
Taylor was raised in the Corona, Queens neighborhood of New York City. As an only child to a middle-class family, Taylor's mother encouraged him to play music at an early age. He began playing piano at age six and went on to study at the New York College of Music and New England Conservatory in Boston. At the New England Conservatory, Taylor majored in composition and arranging. During his time there, he also became familiar with contemporary European art music. Bela Bartók and Karlheinz Stockhausen notably influenced his music.
In 1955, Taylor moved back to New York City from Boston. He formed a quartet with soprano saxophonist, Steve Lacy, bassist Buell Neidlinger, and drummer Dennis Charles. Taylor's first recording, Jazz Advance, featured Lacy and was released in 1956. The recording is described by Richard Cook and Brian Morton in the Penguin Guide to Jazz: "While there are still many nods to conventional post-bop form in this set, it already points to the freedoms in which the pianist would later immerse himself." Taylor's quartet featuring Lacy also appeared at the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival, which was made into the album At Newport. Taylor collaborated with saxophonist John Coltrane in 1958 on Stereo Drive, now available as Coltrane Time.
1950s and early 1960s
Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Taylor's music grew more complex and moved away from existing jazz styles. Gigs were often hard to come by, and club owners found that Taylor's approach of playing long pieces tended to impede business. His 1959 LP record Looking Ahead! showcased his innovation as a creator as compared to the jazz mainstream. Unlike others at the time, Taylor utilized virtuosic techniques and made swift stylistic shifts from phrase to phrase. These qualities, among others, still remained notable distinctions of Taylor's music for the rest of his life.
Landmark recordings, like Unit Structures (1966), also appeared. Within the Unit, musicians were able to develop new forms of conversational interplay. In the early 1960s, an uncredited Albert Ayler worked with Taylor, jamming and appearing on at least one recording, Four, which was unreleased until appearing on the 2004 Ayler box set Holy Ghost: Rare & Unissued Recordings (1962–70).
By 1961, Taylor was working regularly with alto saxophonist Jimmy Lyons, who would become one of his most important and consistent collaborators. Taylor, Lyons, and drummer Sunny Murray (and later Andrew Cyrille) formed the core personnel of the Cecil Taylor Unit, Taylor's primary ensemble until Lyons' death in 1986. Lyons' playing, strongly influenced by jazz icon Charlie Parker, retained a strong blues sensibility and helped keep Taylor's increasingly avant garde music tethered to the jazz tradition.
Late 1960s and 1970s
Taylor began to perform solo concerts in the latter half of the 1960s. The first known recorded solo performance was "Carmen With Rings" (59 minutes) in De Doelen concert hall in Rotterdam on July 1, 1967. Two days earlier, Taylor had played the same composition in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. Many of his later concerts were released on album and include Indent (1973), side one of Spring of Two Blue-J's (1973), Silent Tongues (1974), Garden (1982), For Olim (1987), Erzulie Maketh Scent (1989), and The Tree of Life (1998). He began to garner critical and popular acclaim, playing for Jimmy Carter on the White House Lawn, lecturing as an artist-in-residence at universities, and eventually being awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1973 and a MacArthur Fellowship in 1991.
In 1976, Taylor directed a production of Adrienne Kennedy's A Rat's Mass at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in the East Village of Manhattan. His production combined the original script with a chorus of orchestrated voices used as instruments. Jimmy Lyons, Rashid Bakr, Andy Bey, Karen Borca, David S. Ware, and Raphe Malik performed in the production as the Cecil Taylor Unit, among other musicians and actors.
1990s and the Feel Trio
Following Lyons' death in 1986, Taylor formed the Feel Trio in the early 1990s with William Parker on bass and Tony Oxley on drums. The group can be heard on Celebrated Blazons, Looking (Berlin Version) The Feel Trio and the 10-disc set 2 T's for a Lovely T. Compared to his prior groups with Lyons, the Feel Trio had a more abstract approach, tethered less to jazz tradition and more aligned with the ethos of European free improvisation. He also performed with larger ensembles and big band projects.
Taylor's extended residence in Berlin in 1988 was documented by the German label FMP, resulting in a box set of performances in duet and trio with a large number of European free improvisors, including Oxley, Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Han Bennink, Tristan Honsinger, Louis Moholo, and Paul Lovens. Most of his later recordings have been released on European labels, with the exception of Momentum Space (a meeting with Dewey Redman and Elvin Jones) on Verve/Gitanes. The classical label Bridge released his 1998 Library of Congress performance Algonquin, a duet with violinist Mat Maneri.
Taylor continued to perform for capacity audiences around the world with live concerts, usually playing his favored instrument, a Bösendorfer piano featuring nine extra lower-register keys. A documentary on Taylor, entitled All the Notes, was released on DVD in 2006 by director Chris Felver. Taylor was also featured in a 1981 documentary film entitled Imagine the Sound, in which he discusses and performs his music, poetry, and dance.
2000s
Taylor recorded sparingly in the 2000s, but continued to perform with his own ensembles (the Cecil Taylor Ensemble and the Cecil Taylor Big Band) and with other musicians such as Joe Locke, Max Roach, and Amiri Baraka. In 2004, the Cecil Taylor Big Band at the Iridium Jazz Club was nominated a best performance of 2004 by All About Jazz. The Cecil Taylor Trio was nominated for the same at the Highline Ballroom in 2009. The trio consisted of Taylor, Albey Balgochian, and Jackson Krall. In 2010, Triple Point Records released a deluxe limited-edition double LP titled Ailanthus/Altissima: Bilateral Dimensions of Two Root Songs, a set of duos with Taylor's longtime collaborator Tony Oxley that was recorded live at the Village Vanguard.
In 2013, he was awarded the Kyoto Prize for Music. He was described as "An Innovative Jazz Musician Who Has Fully Explored the Possibilities of Piano Improvisation". In 2014, his career and 85th birthday were honored at the Painted Bride Art Center in Philadelphia with the tribute concert event "Celebrating Cecil". In 2016, Taylor received a retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art entitled "Open Plan: Cecil Taylor".
Taylor, along with dancer Min Tanaka, was the subject of Amiel Courtin-Wilson's 2016 documentary film The Silent Eye.
Ballet and dance
In addition to piano, Taylor was always interested in ballet and dance. Taylor's mother, who died while he was young, was a dancer and played the piano and violin. Taylor once said: "I try to imitate on the piano the leaps in space a dancer makes." He collaborated with dancer Dianne McIntyre in the late 1970s and early 1980s. In 1979, Taylor composed and played the music for a twelve-minute ballet "Tetra Stomp: Eatin' Rain in Space", featuring Mikhail Baryshnikov and Heather Watts.
Poetry
Taylor was a poet, and cited Robert Duncan, Charles Olson, and Amiri Baraka as major influences. He often integrated his poems into his musical performances, and they frequently appear in the liner notes of his albums. The album Chinampas, released by Leo Records in 1987, is a recording of Taylor reciting several of his poems while accompanying himself on percussion.
Musical style and legacy
According to Steven Block, free jazz originated with Taylor's performances at the Five Spot Cafe in 1957 and with Ornette Coleman in 1959. In 1964, Taylor co-founded the Jazz Composers Guild to enhance opportunities for avant-garde jazz musicians.
Taylor's style and methods have been described as "constructivist". Despite Scott Yanow's warning regarding Taylor's "forbidding music" ("Suffice it to say that Cecil Taylor's music is not for everyone"), he praises Taylor's "remarkable technique and endurance", and his "advanced", "radical", "original", and uncompromising "musical vision".
This musical vision is a large part of Taylor's legacy:
Playing with Taylor I began to be liberated from thinking about chords. I'd been imitating John Coltrane unsuccessfully and because of that I was really chord conscious.
Personal life and death
In 1982, jazz critic Stanley Crouch wrote that Taylor was gay, prompting an angry response. In 1991, Taylor told a New York Times reporter "[s]omeone once asked me if I was gay. I said, 'Do you think a three-letter word defines the complexity of my humanity?' I avoid the trap of easy definition."
Taylor moved to Fort Greene, Brooklyn in 1983. He died at his Brooklyn residence on April 5, 2018, at the age of 89. At the time of Taylor's death, he was working on an autobiography and future concerts, among other projects.

Who Is a Continental Philosopher? 5 APRIL 2011 / DAVID AUERBACH / 1 COMMENT In the debate over continental philosophy a few posts back, there was some question as to which philosophers fell under the rubric of continental philosophy. In the eyes of many observers, indeed, a certain strain of French thought has come to stand for the entire field. Both positive and negative attention have been focused around Derrida, Lacan, Foucault, etc., to the exclusion of many, many others. So I was glancing through the Blackwell Companion to Continental Philosophy (1998) on Google Books tonight, edited by Levinas evangelist and Leiter nemesis Simon Critchley. Even Critchley and co-editor William Schroeder relegate that French strain to just one corner of a large tradition, and most of the names are far less contentious. Rather than trying to answer what continental philosophy is, I think it’s better just to look at these names to get a sense of what the field encompasses. Part I: The Kantian Legacy:. 1. The Context and Problematic of Post Kantian Philosophy: Frederick C. Beiser (University of Indiana, Bloomington). 2. Kant: Robert B. Pippin (University of Chicago). 3. Le Doeuff: Moira Gatens (University of Sydney). A reasonable list. It definitely has a French bias, but it’s not too bad. If compiled today, it would probably include Agamben, Badiou, and Negri too. The unforgivable omission is Ernst Cassirer, who is only mentioned twice in the Neo-Kantianism article and once in passing by Beiser (whose work I very much like). Schlegel, Schiller, Saussure, Bourdieu, and Barthes also seem rather important. Given the inclusion of a bunch of cultural and sociological thinkers, sociologists Max Weber, Emile Durkheim, and Georg Simmel should definitely be on this list. Other worthy omissions: Humboldt, Brentano, Croce, Mauss, Lowith, Valery, Fanon, Bachelard, Blumenberg, Apel, Eco, Bouveresse, and Virilio. (Not that I like all of them.)

The Tale of Mister Robert “Bob” Gray.
Full fanfiction is located here.
At this time, dear readers, we must take a moment to break away from our narrative at hand. Because, at this time, we need to focus on a different narrative to understand the current story, the stories we've read, and the stories we will, someday, read.
Pennywise the Dancing Clown came from a story widely known – widely loved. But as it were, the words jumped off the pages of that book and landed in a collection of minds – a hive of thoughts. The named “Robert 'Bob' Gray” became a topic of focus, for so little had been officially written about him. The monster took the name, true as gold, and that was the word of God – or rather... that was the word of the monster's creator, Its author. Beyond that name, not much else was known about Mister Gray, and certainly nothing else was ever, or had ever, been explained.
Bob Gray became the start of a question. “Gray” was a query, a thing of mystery that so many desired to solve. Through readers' own suppositions they did conceive various tales about “Mister Gray” – who he was, what he did, and how he became an urban legend.
Mister Gray.
Bob Gray.
Robert Gray.
Each of those whispers, those quandaries, those theories, those amateur fictions... they led to arguments, debates, and essays – but none of them were one hundred percent accurate.
However...
None of them were one hundred percent wrong, either.
A good story is an amalgam of half stories. Tales pieced together like an epic foil ball, containing only the most compelling bits carefully cherry-picked from the bunch.
So this, dear readers, is the actual, true-to-god, story of Mister Robert “Bob” Gray. Would I lie to you? Me? Your storyteller? Why yes – that's what any good storyteller would do. So, as I'd said in the beginning: If you don't trust me... then stop reading. Are we ready? Let us begin...
The Tale of Mr. Robert “Bob” Gray (better known as) Pennywise the Dancing Clown
Gray was a man between the age of thirty and thirty-five, and he was a tall man with sandy-brown hair and striking blue eyes. True enough, his hands were large, his fingers long, and his legs put him around six and a half feet tall. He wasn't a heavy man, but by no means was he scrawny – not at his height and certainly not at his age.
Gray was indeed an immigrant from Sweden who had, at the ripe age of seventeen, sailed over to the northeasternmost region of the great United States of America. He did indeed come over to the land of the free with little else but spare change and a willingness to work – even if it broke his back. Now, understand this... his name wasn't Bob Gray back in the old country. No. His birth-given name was Robert Grå. Just like that, with the funny circle above it and everything, or so the Americans said. Hell, it meant the same damn thing between the languages, but those American types sure relied heavily on everything being spelled out in English. And so... Robert Gray it became – or Bob if someone was feeling particularly informal.
By his twenties, Bob had made a name for himself in the township of Derry, Maine. In so much that he was the man you'd call on if you'd needed odd jobs done. Some farm work here. Some machinist work there. And every year there'd be a carnival that rolled through Derry, as sure as rain. The event lasted through a long, summer weekend, and when it was over, those carnies packed up that carnival like stuffing socks in a suitcase. You'd better believe Bob Gray was willing to help out with the odd jobs at this event. It was only for a weekend, but the coin was good.
A carnie – a real leathery fella – by the nickname of Carnie Ron had been the one who'd personally tasked Bob Gray for the right wages. He'd set Bob to work on various chores like fixing things that went broke and restocking prizes, food, and refreshments as they'd been consumed (maybe once in awhile thieved) throughout the weekend. The downside for Bob was that this carnival only came once a year. A man needed to live the rest of those twelve months. Regardless, he took what he could, worked his duties, and collected pay from Carnie Ron.
It wasn't until Bob's third year that things had changed. One of the carnie hands, not Ron, asked Mister Gray to fill in as a clown – something to keep the younger kids entertained while their ma's and pa's drank themselves loose on cheap stout (which made them spend all the more coin for the rest of the night).
And that's just what Bob did. He put on the clown suit, which was little more than a dingy, old pair of men's pajamas, and caked some white pancake makeup all over his sun-soaked face. Then, Mister Gray took a bit of red paint and gave himself a big, merry smile from ear to ear. He looked just like the Cheshire Cat, if that wicked old cat was ever the clownin' type.
“Hand me all those balloons,” Bob had told that same carnie hand, and – boy oh boy – Mister Gray took to being a clown like a duck takes to water. The kids got a dance out of him, silly voices, crazy faces, and each one of them walked away with their own balloon after they'd begged their ma's and pa's (til they were blue in the face, no less) for the extra coin to buy their very own from the clown. Why, Bob even took a paintbrush to the balloons and signed each one of them, like he'd been peddling out his very own autograph. (As if he'd been anything to anyone at the time, but for that measly hour, to those kids, Mister Bob Gray was like a god.) Before he'd signed his first balloon, Bob had to think of a name on the fly. He saw those coins jingling in the youngsters' hands and it just came to him: Pennywise. Pennywise the clown. The clown that danced, even sang a tune or three, and handed off balloons with his signature and everything.
It wasn't long after that day that Bob Gray got to thinking that he could do this for a living. He could entertain, sing, dance, and overcharge for cheap balloons. (And he could do it more than once per year!) So, with the money he'd saved thus far, Mister Gray bought an old, worn down caravan off Carnie Ron. He'd fixed her up and painted a likeness of his clownin' self across her side. Then he wrote the words, as big and as grand as he could: The Great Pennywise – The Dancing Clown. And, sure enough, that had been Mister Bob Gray's modest source of income for years to come.
What Bob Gray hadn't known was ...that in all that time... he was being watched. (And interestingly enough, he'd been watched by two very different sets of eyes.)
The first, and prettiest, set of eyes that'd been watching Mister Gray from afar belonged to Miss Melody Sharp. She was a provocative young woman with a lean build and a face that could charm the skin off a snake. Her hair was thick and golden and often prettily decorated with some ribbons or another. Her eyes were deep and beautiful, like a pair of sparkling sapphires. One look from her and it could melt any man's heart. (Well... almost any man's.) It was true. Miss Melody was a lovely thing, and even lovelier was her soul. She'd help just about any person in need, no questions asked. Miss Sharp was a kind girl with a gentle touch and a soothing voice. Why, her tone was so pacifying that her own birth-given name didn't do it justice. Yes, just about any man in the Derry township could agree that listening to Miss Melody Sharp speak was like being serenaded by a warm, beautiful song.
Now... don't ask me why... but poor Melody, for some unholy reason, had her sweet heart set on Mister Bob Gray. One could theorize that she took to him because he'd been so engaging in his performances. Perhaps he amused her which had, in some way, bewitched the sweet girl. One could also argue that she took to him because, admittedly, Mister Gray was a handsome man with those unconventionally attractive Scandinavian looks. Oh sure – he was tall and strong and his eyes were piercing blue. So blue, in fact, you could swear that god himself plucked two pieces of the sky and stuffed them right in Gray's sockets on the day he'd come squalling into the world.
So, without a doubt, Miss Melody Sharp had fallen for Mister Bob Gray. Unfortunately – because life just isn't fair, even if you are as darling and as elegant as Miss Sharp – the man could have cared less. She came around after his shows while he'd been winding down back behind the caravan, and it was always the same sad story.
“Evening, Robert!” she'd say with the prettiest smile. “I baked you a shepherd's pie.” And little Melody would approach Mister Gray, often times while he was still in his clown makeup, offering the man some painstakingly handmade gift or another. Poor thing. She went a-courtin' after Bob, day in and day out, never quite getting the hint that he was dead set on remaining a lifelong bachelor.
“Thank you, Miss Melody,” he'd always say, without so much as looking at her. His tone was often quiet, unimpressed, perhaps with a hint of eagerness for her to just go away. Now, there was nothing actually wrong with Mister Gray. Nothing criminal about him. He simply wasn't interested. Some folk balked at his persistent indifference to Miss Sharp, and that's how rumors circulated, but – true as gold – Bob only cared about Bob.
Melody didn't see this for what it was. She persisted in her own way, in spite of his antipathy. “There's a dance at the local hall coming up...” That was her usual line when that time of year came around. “Gee, I'd hate to go alone...”
But of course, Bob Gray, with that thick head of sandy hair sitting on that prominent forehead of his would look down at the hopeful, young woman, clear his throat, and say, “I'm sure you'll manage.” Then he'd turn right back around and stare into that mirror of his as he wiped his makeup from his skin.
Melody had taken Bob for a coy man, which was part of her whole denial over the issue. In spite of his day to day vocation, she was convinced he was shy. And that was the long and short of their relationship, if you had the cheek to call it such a thing.
Then... there had been the other set of eyes watching Bob Gray. These eyes were much different from those of Melody Sharp. These had been the devil's eyes. Eyes from another place – a dark place – not anywhere bright enough to be considered another world. It was like an unworld. A void. Nowhere that any man or woman would willingly go. Perhaps it'd been a place that led straight to hell for all one knew. Hell or death. Or perhaps both.
What is known about the Derry township is that a great evil thrived somewhere at its core. This was an unfortunate truth, one that no citizen wanted to advertise, but a truth with which every citizen was all too familiar. Some said the town was cursed. Others said that the evil bore the town, itself. There was no true agreement on the matter, but, true enough, it had been the same evil that plagued Derry in its later years to come. It was the same evil that eventually caused the Ironworks Factory explosion, the same evil that burned down the Black Spot. Hell, it was the same evil that skyrocketed both the citywide death toll and the headcount of missing children at an alarming rate. This evil... It had a mind. It was conscious. It was self aware. And, regrettably, It took notice of Mister Robert Gray.
For a brief time, It merely watched him. It studied everything about Gray – his daily routine, his habits, his apparel, and his performances. It took to him, you see. It took to his likeness. In a way, It envied Gray – how easily he drew in crowds of people. Gray simply saw them as potential meal tickets... easy coin.
But It...
It saw them as potential meals. Plain and simple.
Bob Gray hadn't been too difficult to drive to madness. No sir. All it took were some whispers in his mind, driving his thoughts to dark places, forcing the man to slowly become unhinged. Gray had begun to question his sanity the night he'd seen himself eat a boy. The creature – It – took to shapeshifting into the very spitting image of Bob Gray. It had strut around, looking exactly like him, right before his eyes, causing the man's mind to snap faster than a stale twig.
“I'm you, Bob!” It had said, dragging around the half dead body of a bleeding and terrified boy. That same boy had earlier been part of the paying crowd that gathered to see Gray's dancing clown performance. Gray screamed, night after night, watching a nightmarish facsimile of himself gruesomely eat away at the flesh and bone of one horrified patron or another.
Tragically, Bob Gray – the man – had become convinced that he, himself, was the killer. Such a thing wasn't true, but try telling that poor son of a bitch that after the terrors he'd been forced to see. Becoming unhinged didn't take long. No sir. Gray's grip on reality had long since slipped clean away and he couldn't live with himself any further. After two weeks of watching the other Bob Gray, Mister Gray fastened a rope up to the branch of a tall tree, secured it snugly around his neck, and promptly took his own life.
The creature... It was delighted. With the real man out of the picture, It was able to take over his appearance, his caravan, and his dancing clown routine. It took over his life. It was the new Mister Robert “Bob” Gray, now. It continued to feed off the patrons who came to see Pennywise do his dance – oh yes – like shooting fish in a barrel. Easy meals – and these types scared real easy, too. It ...Gray... made their meat jump with flavor.
The creature went by Bob's name, who frequently introduced himself as Pennywise, just as his muse (now swinging from a tree) had done. Nothing seemed to be standing in his way to endless meals. No more hunting and starving. No more worrying that he couldn't fill his belly before his long sleep. The whole setup was about as convenient as running a farm.
One day, however, after a few weeks of this delicious convenience, Miss Melody Sharp – oblivious and as innocent as pie – went calling on Mister Bob Gray just as she'd always been apt to do. Melody circled the caravan, peeking around for him, but found that, as it were, he didn't appear to be home. The caravan was, indeed, the man's home. She knew this well. He wasn't the type to stray too far from it for too long. However... without warning – without even a sound – Melody almost jumped out of her own skin when she turned to see Bob Gray just standing mere inches from her, as if he'd noiselessly appeared from thin air!
“Robert!” she'd yelped, raising a hand to her heaving chest. “You startled me half to death. That wasn't very kind, sir.” She chuckled a bit, for there was a part of Melody who had been amused by her own shock, and so her chuckle turned into a laugh. Composing herself, she then beamed a warm smile to the tall man staring her down with intense eyes; a man who sported a grin that didn't seem to sit quite right on his comely face. It looked like the smile of the clown, as if it had been glued, indefinitely, to Gray's lips. It did, indeed, give Melody pause before she continued. “I...” the young woman stammered, “I made you something.”
He stared her up and down – she was dressed in a frilly, sky blue dress with white trim. It was warm that day, so her hair was done up in some fancy knotwork to which only pretty girls like Melody knew the secret method. Gray found her... appealing. Just that brief bounce of shock had sent an appetizing aroma to his sensitive nose – like fresh meat simmering in a spicy stew.
Melody handed him a box. It had been conscientiously gift-wrapped, almost too perfect to tear open. “Go on,” she smiled.
Without a word, Gray nimbly untied the white ribbon around the box, then ripped at the shiny, red paper, peeling it away from the parcel. The box was a simple paper cube, likely something she'd found in her attic. Melody's smile widened as she blushed a little. “Open it up, Robert.”
Gray popped and flipped open the paper flap and looked down. Inside, there was some sort of ivory fabric, pleated and lacy, made from some fancy material or another.
“Here,” huffed Melody, too excited to wait for him to take it out. “Let me.” Miss Sharp removed the item and draped it around Gray's neck. “See?” Ruffs. She'd sewn together custom-made, Elizabethean neck ruffs for the man's Pennywise costume. “I hope you like it.” Still smiling and blushing, she awkwardly looked down.
Gray, he ...It... had never been given a gift before. Certainly nothing intended for the indulgence of his (Its) own vanity. He reached to the back of his neck and fastened the ruffs together, spying himself in one of the makeup mirrors. The ruffs, indeed, looked good. And because Gray looked good, he felt a multitude of good feelings wash over him in that instant. He turned to Miss Melody, clutched her delicate hand, stared into her eyes, and said, “Thank you, Miss Sharp. This is a beautiful gift.”
Melody's blushing cheeks reddened even more. “Will you wear it to your next show?” she'd asked. Some part of her expected Robert to tell her no, rip off the ruffs, stuff them back in that box, and send her on her way.
“Oh yes, Miss Sharp. Melody. Yes I will wear it. I will wear it to every show.” He held her hands a bit tighter, now. Just a squeeze. Then, he let her go.
Melody's heart nearly melted. Meanwhile, Gray excused himself, but unlike in the past, he did so warmly, with a tone that seemed to say, “Oh Melody... please do come visit me again...”
And so... she did. Miss Sharp, bless her innocent heart, did not realize the man called Robert Gray – to whom she'd devoted the remainder of her free time on Earth – was truly not the same man as the one that snubbed her again and again. No. She visited nightly with a foul thing. A skinwalker that had been asleep for billions of years, only having recently awoken within the last few hundred. Thereafter, It followed a sleep cycle of twenty-seven years only to emerge, hunt, and eat on the flesh of Derry folk, before returning to Its rest.
Melody was none the wiser, but she sure was tickled to see Mister Bob Gray hungrily wolf down her shepherd's pie for once in her life. She wondered... did his feelings change for her? Had Robert finally warmed up to her advances? And oh how he wore her hand sewn neck ruffs! Each time she caught his act, he'd faithfully had them wrapped round his oh-so-handsome collarbone. Melody was elated. Robert had finally taken to her.
Now, this is the point in our tale, dear reader, where one might think this wicked creature had depraved plans for the likes of poor Miss Melody Sharp. Did the thought cross Gray's mind to plunge the delicate young maiden into her deepest fears and then proceed to eat her alive? Oh yes! This thought did indeed cross Gray's mind – and more than once, assuredly.
But...
Melody had a certain something about her. Even all the Derry men could agree on that. Perhaps even some of the Derry women, if you can open up your mind and wrap your head around such a thing. Sure enough, that certain something, that unconditionally giving nature of Melody's, well... it was powerful enough to transcend barriers even of the dark, extradimensional kind. People like Miss Sharp don't come around all too often. This dark tale goes to show just how much of a rarity she'd been. Perhaps her certain something failed on the real Robert Gray, but... on the likes of this entity... on this creature... it sure hadn't failed in the least. Gray's ability to probe deep into Miss Sharp's psyche and read her every whim had, unbeknownst to her, enchanted a monster. Not an easy feat to do. Sometimes it was what was on the inside that counted... and in this case, it counted for one's very life.
Gray complimented Melody's shepherd's pie each and every time she'd brought it around, singing the utmost praise to its delicious texture and taste. The animal meat within had been seasoned just right, almost enough to rival the scared, savory flesh of a quivering child.
“They say the quickest way to a man's heart is through his stomach,” Miss Sharp would laugh.
Gray laughed along with her, oh how he laughed and laughed. Sort of a haunting giggle, really, but Melody cheerfully paid no mind.
One night, Miss Sharp came to Gray, very nervous, hoping to ask him the same question she'd asked each year. The dance. She wanted him to accompany her to the dance at the local hall where all of the township would surely be in attendance.
“Will you do me the honor?” she'd asked. “I know, I know. I ask every year, but–”
“What about now?” said Gray.
Melody quirked a half smile. “N-now?”
Gray took her small hand in his, cupping his other hand to her slender waist. “Would you kindly dance with me now Melody Sharp? Out here? Under the moonlight?”
On cue, her cheeks flushed and she smiled. “Of course, Mister Gray.” Miss Sharp couldn't believe it – she had won this man's heart.
Gray pulled her close, swaying gently, leading Melody along with his graceful strides. He rested his chin on the curve of her head as she felt the soothing heave of his chest against her face. For some time their quiet waltz continued, silently but beautifully, beneath the glow of the moon above, until Gray lifted her innocent face to meet his eyes. He leaned downward and gently kissed the young woman on her velvet, soft lips. She tasted as he'd imagined – sweet and fresh. Gray found himself unable to unlock his mouth from hers. Melody pressed against him in her own, eager way – meanwhile her small but firm hands cupped the rugged contours of his jawbone and neck.
Gray lifted Melody from her feet, still embracing, forever trapped in the perfect kiss. And the two eventually found themselves back inside his caravan, clothing off, making love on a bed roll stuffed with down. Melody had never lain with a man in all her life – and as far as Gray knew, she was assuredly his (Its) first, as well. Their lovemaking was raw, but slow, bathed in a soft light provided by a neighboring kerosene lamp.
Gray had hunted the humans... had fed on the humans... but this...
“I love you,” Melody Sharp had whispered against his lips, now wet from her kisses.
It had been a phrase the humans said to each other when their affections had... blossomed. Gray, for all his evil and wickedness, could only hear himself utter those same words back to her.
“I love you too...” Even though this monster had spent centuries playing deadly tricks on people, this was indeed no ruse. The creature that had driven Bob Gray to suicide, stole his life away, and murdered those who paid to see him dance, deeply felt love – of all things – for Miss Melody Sharp.
And as she moaned and panted against Gray as he bucked his hips into her, he resolved to himself that while almost all humans were potential meat – Melody Sharp certainly was not.
Time went on and the two continued their trysts, but as all stories have a beginning, there must come the inevitable end. Whether Melody Sharp knew it or not – she'd trapped the heart of a monster. Not a small victory, which undeniably makes her the hero of this tale. In spite of how everything shall boil down in the end, Melody Sharp was the one who had saved the monster inside of Mister Robert “Bob” Gray.
Now, Gray, for all that he (It) was... had been a cloud of malevolence cast over Derry. Perhaps, Melody did not perish by the wicked creature's hand in of itself – Its influence was still the death of her. Gray's corruption spread like a disease through the hearts of Derry residents far and wide. Murder. Rape. Arson. All accounts of such heinous deeds increased in frequency, namely when the creature's eyes were open.
Gray waited for Melody that night, as he always had each and every night. How he missed her when she was away. But Miss Melody never came to the caravan that night. She'd taken her usual walking path – oh yes – but this time some men had been waiting for the poor girl. They'd been watching Miss Sharp, memorizing her routine over the course of some time. These men knew that the young lady had coin on her and they were, unfortunately, the desperate criminal types in a rush to leave the great state of Maine. Now, be aware they didn't violate Miss Melody – no they did not. As previously stated, they were in a rush. The thoughts had crossed their ugly minds, sure, but the coin was all they wanted. Truth be told, had Melody handed over her purse, then everyone would've walked away in one piece. But Miss Sharp, deep in her gracious heart, was a hero – she was a fighter. And, bless her efforts, she tried to fight off those men, but she lost that battle. She lost it hard.
In fact, it had been in that very moment when one of the men – whose eyes Melody had nearly clawed from his face – stuck his knife deep in her belly that Gray looked up at the moon above and gasped in sync with Miss Sharp's final breath. Those awful men ran off with her coin – they even took her shepherd's pie. All the while, Gray raced across the Derry landscape, moving faster than any mortal man could do. Though he hadn't moved fast enough and, in the end, he found his love lying flat on the wet earth, bleeding red through the center of that sky blue dress of hers.
Gray took Melody in his arms and shushed her as she choked. Blood bubbled from the corners of her mouth and he held her closer, knowing all too well when a human's death was near.
“R – Robert...” she'd managed to say.
“I'm here,” he croaked in reply, his once smooth voice changing under the duress of watching her die. As Melody's life slipped away, all the affection Gray had for her sunk downward, deep into a forgotten place where he locked away his (Its) sensitivities. Gray's affection was replaced with a heavy layer of malice and hatred for Derry. Hatred for the humans. Hatred for their children. Oh how... how... he would make them suffer. Make them scream. Make them into his food forever and always. They took her from him. Miss Sharp could have been the one to quell his urgency to always consume – but not anymore.
Gray hugged Melody's limp, delicate body close and rocked her. He shuddered with grief so fiercely that he began to lose his form. Tendrils inched out from his spine as he arched forward, cradling his love. But... deep down... that affection still lingered. It was still there... somewhere... buried within a monster who wept into the night. Melody Sharp may have died, but her long lasting impression on Mister Robert “Bob” Gray never did.

________________
‘”What if you’re going to upset her with staying... not able to give her what she deserves?’ was enough to cloud her mind once more and make her sneak silently but quickly out of the room, leaving her lover behind without another looking back; she knew that she couldn’t bear to leave then. “
Chapter 2: The housekeeper
The thief managed to stay silent the whole time she was sneaking through the upper level of the estate. Much to her disadvantage, the size of this house and therefore the walk through it was long enough to make her think and getting lost in those thoughts once she was down the stairs. As she was walking slowly through the ground level she carefully leaned against the walls, almost as if she’d use them as a hiding spot in case someone was walking by.
It was a good plan and would have worked out if she wasn’t lost in her thoughts. Because due to not paying any attention to her surroundings she didn’t hear the soft hum coming from the kitchen, which should have made her alarmed and maybe search for a different way.
But the thief continued walking slowly in that direction, the noise of her hand trailing the stone wall made the person in the kitchen stop humming and turn around to face the source of noise: “An early riser as I see, eh?” Said person shook her head in amusement and started laughing, making the thief jump slightly, now being pulled out of her thoughts, and gasp at being caught.
“I-” Melie stared at the person in front of her, who turned out to be the old but friendly lady the group met while freeing the house and who now worked as a housekeeper and servant for the De Rune’s.
‘Shit.’ Was all that went through Melie’s mind at the moment, being caught off guard and not knowing how to respond. But before she could think of something to say or to just start running without another word, the old woman laughed again and waved her hand at Melie, inviting her to join her at the cattle.
“C’mere, young lady. Ya can help me with preparing today’s meal if yer already here.”
Melie didn’t exactly know why she followed the invitation and sat down on a simple wooden stool next to the fireplace on which a stew broiled in the cattle, but she did and now was watching the housekeeper cutting some vegetables. It took the thief a few seconds to regain her voice and all she was able to let out was a: “Not sure if you should call me a lady, ma'am. I ain’t one.”
The old woman only laughed softly in response before she showed her a gentle smile: “Usually women’re flustered at being called a lady even if it ain’t suitable for them. But you and the little lady are courtin’ each other, yes? It indeed makes yer suitable for the title, in the future for sure at least.”
“Uhm...” The red haired girl looked down at the mentioning of her and Amicia being a couple and sighed, reminded of what she was about to do.
She didn’t have to think of more as a response because the housekeeper noticed her reaction and therefore something being wrong: “Something has yer stirred up I see?”
Melie gasped quietly and blinked as her head shot up to face the old woman, being more than surprised at how she could tell. But she didn’t have time to question her about it and she blinked again when the woman simply dumped a sack of potatoes and two wooden bowls in front of her. The older spoke once more as she was handing the young thief a flat knife: “Talk, my child. About what has made yer heart so heavy. And talkin’ gets easier when you’re doin’ something, like being productive.”
The thief was hesitant about opening up to the kind housekeeper, remembering how she often heard old women spreading every bit of gossip, and she really didn’t want this to spread around: “Sure that ya wouldn’t gossip it around, madame? We all know that it’d be nice to share what the young De Rune’s girlfriend worries about, eh?”
Immediately after letting those words out, the thief already regretted her choice of words, knowing that it really wasn’t necessary to be so rude: “Ah shit- uh- I didn’t mean to-”
But the old women interrupted her with a soft laugh and waving it off: “Don’t you apologize, young lady. Ya can’t be too careful enough nowadays, saw it with my own old eyes. But my lips will remain closed, don’tcha worry.”
Melie still felt more than uncertain about being honest, but she guessed that it would be better to share that worry and to ease its weight through this than to keep it forever. And in a way this old lady did radiate trustworthiness off, which eased her to speak in a low voice, noticeably a bit ashamed as she took care of the first potato while letting her deepest worries out: “I...I-” Her voice failed her at first and she looked down on the ground once more, only able to continue in an even quieter tone when she felt the housekeepers hand on her shoulder, encouraging her to try talking again: “I… I don’t think that I’m good enough for Amicia… She- she’s just so damn wonderful in every way, there’s nothing you can’t love about her, even when she’s kinda childish… ‘ts still cute. And- and she’s rich, a knight’s daughter…”
Melie’s hesitation fully faded away as she started speaking and soon she didn’t whisper anymore, even though her voice was still drowned in uncertainty: “And I-  ‘m a lousy thief in comparison. Hell- I can’t and couldn’t ever give her what she deserves, all the fancy stuff ya know? I can’t give her that or any other good thing she is used to, so she’d probably get upset about being with me… and I don’t want her to get upset-”
While Melie was speaking, the housekeeper only shook her head as a response, but still keeping her soft, motherly smile as she thought about the problems the youth had in relationships. That soft smile only faded when Melie came to her last part, about what she was about to do: “Hell I couldn’t stand her being upset… and me being the reason for it. So- I wanted to leave… it probably sounds weird- but maybe she’ll forget about me and can get the happy and wealthy life she deserves-”
  smack!
Without hesitation and without waiting for the younger woman to finish talking, the old housekeeper shook her head and lightly smacked the back of Melie’s head while scolding her, her motherly care never really leaving her voice or actions: “What a foolish thing to believe! Love doesn’t die, young lady. The only thing you’d do with leaving would be to break both of yer hearts. More than if ya stay and ya two would realize years later that ya don’t fit and would peacefully part.”
Melie was about to puff her cheeks out and complain about the smack on her head, but didn’t want to be rude again so she decided to wait until the housekeeper was finished speaking. Her idea of complaining afterwards completely vanished though when the housekeeper brought up an interesting point. That was when said old woman continued cutting vegetables; before that, while she was still talking, she turned around to get back to work while gladly taking the few potatoes that Melie peeled off while letting her heart out: “Besides- I think ya by her side is the best thing to happen, n’ the best fate the little lady could’ve wished for.”
That sentence was what caught Melie’s attention and made her tilt her head at the housekeeper: “Wh-what d’you mean by that? Best fate for her?”
At first the older woman only chuckled softly while working, only a few moments later she spoke with an amused tone in her voice: “Ya need to know- I know the little Amicia since she’s born. I’ve worked for this family till the first year of the little boy. And she’s always been quite the adventurous ‘n stubborn minded, ya know?”
The soft laugh she let out at the end also made Melie laugh; the thief really could perfectly picture Amicia being like that as a child: “She never got rid of that then. But how comes you stopped after Hugo was born?”
“Hmm- I finished training the younger housemaids, ‘twas my time to retire,” The housekeeper quickly answered with an amused laugh and smile before she went back to what she wanted to say: “Anyway- ya could see that she wasn’t made for the path she’d have to take as a lady. Followin’ a husband and other men without a word, livin’ for high expectations, go on gatherings but no adventures… Her mother wasn’t made for that too, she’s the most noble and independent lady I’ve known. But she was only lucky that Sir Robert let ‘er be the way she was, ‘cos he loved her the way she was. And Amicia-”
The servant paused and showed Melie a soft smile “-Truly is lucky to have found  ya, to have ya by her side. She has everythin’ she wants with ya, y’know? Freedom and love. She dreamed of that since she was small- always has been the dreamy romantic. And still seems to be.”
Melie was silent after the housekeepers speech, gladly she finished peeling before, because now she was too struck by that information to do anything besides sitting on the stool with an agape mouth, lost in her thoughts which worked all the new aspects of this revelation in.
And the housekeeper decided to let her take all the time she needs for thinking, taking the rest of the potatoes while deciding and watching Melie for a few seconds from time to time.
____________
And so their conversation died. The housekeeper went back to quietly humming her song from before while preparing today’s meal, and Melie still thought about everything. Now with the new view, the thief started to feel dumb for thinking that leaving was a good solution, or a solution at all.
It took minutes until Melie’s thoughts were finally all sorted out and she was able to give the housekeeper a proper response: “D… D’you really think that…?  I mean- I never really thought of it like that… “
“It’s only natural, one thinks that the wealthy and noble are simply lucky and don’t have their problems. Not famine- nor sickness… but their own burdens. And to be fair- I thought so too ‘till I started working for the De Rune’s, or rather for Sir Robert even before he started courting the noble lady. Thought that he’d be a horrible person- greedy, not caring; we poor know the prejudices we have, eh?”
The housekeeper grinned slightly when she got a nod and soft laugh from Melie as a response before she continued while laughing as well: “And we two, young lady, can also tell how wrong we were in the De Rune’s case. They’re kind to everyone who’s not disrespectful, a trait barely anyone truly has.”
“Oh we really were-” Melie laughed even more and nodded in agreement, grinning happily at the old woman after a bit of time passed “Ya really know them well, don’t ya?”
“Over 20 years of working for a family indeed makes ya know them well, and make the children see ya as a part of their family too,” The housekeeper nodded and smiled softly back, “So trust this old lady here when she says that Amicia couldn’t be happier anywhere else. And ya can also trust me when I say that ya should talk to her about it... tell her what was on your mind.”
Melie’s amusement died at the last sentence, worry and a little bit of panic spreading in her mind as she blinked in disbelief: “I can’t tell her that…! ‘twas stupid of me to think so, what would she think of me if I told her that I believed that?”
“Ya may be assuming the worst, that she’d think lower of ya, don’t yer think so?”, The housekeeper only stopped talking to get a response from Melie, a slow nod in this case, before she continued: “But don’t immediately assume that, dear. Y’know… a good relationship is only good if it’s built on trust and honesty, no matter what kind of relationship. It ain’t bad, not at all, to be honest about your fears… ‘cos-”
While she spoke, she slowly trailed through the room, to the cattle and back to the counter while being watching with anxious looks from Melie. At her ‘Cos’ she turned around to face the thief with one of her motherly smiles, seemingly typical for her: “’Cos ya never know if she ain’t worrying about the same thing. Ya both are very well aware of your different heritages. Yer worried about not being good enough for her and making her upset with it… but did’ya ever think of that the little lady might worry that yer not comfortable with this kinda life, with bein’ so close to this higher class? Or that it ain’t what ya wanted in life and get upset ‘bout it?”
The way the old woman stressed ‘might’ during her speech and the knowing smile she gave her at the end made Melie realize that the housekeeper wasn’t just speculating; she knew that Amicia had the same worries as the thief and tried to make the two talk about it with this indeed very obvious hint. So she sighed softly and looked at the housekeeper in front of her with an unsure smile: “Guess it really would be the best then, huh…?  Will just have to see how-”
Melie stopped talking and blinked when she noticed the housekeeper looking at her with a raised eyebrow and a slight smirk, making the thief laugh with it, “Hey! I swear I’ll do that!”
“So no more running away? Wonderful,” Now the housekeeper laughed once more, not being able to keep the smirk up for too long.
“Yeah- promise that I won’t think of something stupid like that again… looks like your smack knocked some sense into me- usually it did quite the opposite,” Melie shrugged her shoulders at the end when she thought back to her father and how he treated her and Arthur, and to how she has more reasons now to be glad about running away from him.
The housekeeper first looked at her with a concerned look and wanted to ask further, but decided against it when she got a mumbled “Just a shitty poor father, y’know?” from Melie before she could say anything, realizing that it was Melie’s hint of not wanting to talk about him.
The thief sighed relieved when she saw that the older woman nodded at her before going back to the cattle, fully concentrated on her working again. So Melie decided to watch her, it was relaxing in a way, and even offered a bit of help here and there which was gladly accepted from the housekeeper’s side.
_____________
This went on for a while and both women enjoyed talking more, or rather the housekeeper telling old stories while Melie gladly listened, while preparing the meal together.
“Oh the little lady was always on the run. Y’know when she was just 6- she was bored one day and saw Lady Beatrice walking towards her laboratory. So of course, like every other child, she sneaked into the laboratory. And oh was everyone surprised that she only got caught when she decided to sneak up on her mother and scare her-”  The housekeeper was just merrily telling one of her favorite stories about little Amicia’s adventures when she heard quick foot steps coming closer to them.
“Huh…? Who could be-” Melie wasn’t even able to finish her question and turn around as she was interrupted by a very joyful and also slightly breathless “There you are!”

Today’s theme: because Victoria Day falls between Mothers’ Day and Fathers’ Day, the theme of this program is going to be parents & music. I want to hear from you. Get in touch with names of formative songs your parents introduced to you, and/or songs you introduced to your parents that turned their cranks.

Due to some scheduling kerfuffles at the station, the July 2, 2018 instalment of The Midway will last longer and start a whole lot earlier! Coming to your receivers from 6AM-10AM MST, tune in for our post-Canada Day extravaganza.
The theme of this episode is a simple one: what is the best Canadian artist/song you’ve discovered in 2018? It can be a new release, or any Canadian that you weren’t previously aware of - regardless of era.

We’ll also feature some leftovers - songs which listeners recommended for earlier editions of The Midway, but which were not broadcast when received due to time constraints or other impediments. 80 位科学家 死了 都是微生物学家
回顾:80 位已故科学家的完整名单,附有照片和令人震惊的细节
Tumblr media
Foster Gamble 是第一个提醒我们注意这一点的人;我们只希望对这两起死亡事件进行全面调查,因为我们认为这至少有必要对所有、部分或全部是否真的有关联进行调查。

Marjorie Roberts about to open up another block of Jenkins finest on Livermush Monday
Americana Day and Livermush Monday
By KEN WELBORN
Record Publisher
What an amazing fun weekend we were treated to this Labor Day!
At 11 a. m. on Saturday morning, the ridge on E Street in North Wilkesboro where The Record Park is located simply broke out in music when the 13th Annual Americana Day Youth Music program began.
This event, hosted by The Record, pays tribute to our local VFW Post and its Honor Guard with a special day of music, made all the more special by the fact that the players are all under 18 years of age.
Clearly, bluegrass and Americana music is safely in the hands of some very talented young people.
At noon, as is our custom during events at The Record Park, the American flag was raised by the VFW Post 1142's Honor Guard. After Post Chaplain Larry Reavis led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance, 12-year-old Libby Harbour played the Star Spangled Banner on her fiddle.  The sun was bright, the wind was calm, the soldiers and the crowd stood at attention, and the silence was broken by only by Libby's perfectly played rendition of our National Anthem. I said it then, and I'll say it again now, it would bring a tear to the eye of a stone statue.
And so it went for the rest of the day. Youngsters like 8-year-old Lake Carver played and sang with a stage presence that completely belied their youth. Two others, Heidi Holloway and Devin Huie, have both played at 12 Americana Days, and are about to age out of this event. They thankfully both have a future in music that we will all get to enjoy for the years to come.
Americana Day 2018 was truly a beautiful day with beautiful children, and a musical treat for everyone which will be long remembered. Thank you to all who helped.
Then comes Labor Day Monday morning, and I find myself in Carl White's studio with Allen Langley, our mutual friend from Shelby, N.C., recording a podcast with Carl. These podcasts, as Carl says, will tell the story behind the stories.  From there we head up NC Hwy 268 West to beautiful downtown Ferguson to introduce Allen to an event like no other, The Grocery Basket Café, 86 year-old Marjorie Roberts, and a unique musical experience known simply as Livermush Monday.
Some 15 years ago, musicians and others who attended the fiddlers convention in Happy Valley near Ferguson, and didn't leave on Sunday evening to go home, found themselves looking for a bit of breakfast on Monday. The Grocery Basket Café was nearby, Marjorie is an angel on this earth, and in no time a few folks began to bring along their fiddles and banjos and such, and Livermush Monday was born. Sometimes there are as many as 15-20 people in a loose circle; one person will start a song and the others will jump in, playing everything from "Froggy went a Courtin'" to "Will the Circle be Unbroken."  If you can't pat your foot at Livermush Monday, you have a broken leg.
A few years ago, through our connections with Allen and Carl, Marc Mauney with Jenkins Foods in Shelby was contacted and Marc cheerfully took on a de-facto sponsorship, providing Jenkins Livermush for the event.  He spent a lot of time in Wilkes and surrounding areas and we came to know him as a man who didn't mind working hard and who had a heart of gold.  Sadly, we lost Marc last year in September to a heart attack, but it was truly uplifting to speak with many of his customers in Wilkes--to them he was far more than just Jenkins Foods, he really had become their friend on many, many levels. Marc Mauney's legacy was well-remembered on Monday.
I spent several hours on Monday at the Grocery Basket Café with Carl, Allen, and a full house of folks from Icard to Ireland--all with a common bond--a love of family, friendship, music and especially love for a wonderful soul who had just celebrated her 86th birthday, Marjorie Roberts.
Her smile would open the vaults at Fort Knox.
What a great weekend, full of music and smiling faces from 8 to 86.
 Standing Up
By LAURA WELBORN
There is so much in the news these days revealing the destruction that has been wrought from keeping things secret.
The Me Too movement came from this: the Catholic Church that kept secret the years of abuse by priests and the pharmaceutical companies’ promotion of opioids.  Both have been destroying lives with well intentioned people hiding the truth to protect institutions or companies with little regard to the lives lost.
Yesterday, a friend of mine gave me the book “Dopesick-Dealers, Doctors and the Drug Company that addicted America” by Beth Macy.
The book documents how opioid pain drugs got their start in the 90’s and where they were first heavily marketed.  That first market was Appalachia.  Wilkes County is part of that region.
We have the highest number of opioid addicted people of any county in the state. I help people everyday who started out on painkillers from an injury or post surgery and ended up unintentionally addicted.
How big is our problem?
Wilkes County has one of the highest rate of opioid-related deaths per capita in the state.  In 2016, Wilkes County saw 25 such deaths compared to 10 fatalities by car crashes (many car crashes are related to impairment by alcohol/drugs- which are related to people taking painkillers (opioids) while driving).
In her book, Macy talks about the marketing of the drug OxyContin. It used preliminary and ultimately flawed scientific studies heralding the “less than 1 percent” addiction rate from observations of hospital use of opioid pain relievers. The critical part left out was a 56 percent addiction rate after patients left the hospital and tried handle their pain.
The book talks about Purdue Pharma’s marketing of OxyContin for all kinds of chronic pain, not just cancer, and claimed it was safe and reliable. Pardue sales reps get bonuses for the number of Appalachia doctors they convinced to prescribe Opioids.  They fanned out, evangelizing doctors and dentists in all 50 states with the message “prescribing OxyContin for pain is the moral, responsible and compassionate thing to do for people with back injuries, wisdom-tooth surgery and bronchitis.” The wave of Opioid addiction that followed could not be called moral, responsible or compassionate.
The 1996 introduction of OxyContin coincided with pain being defined as “the fifth vital sign.” Traditionally, temperature, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and heart rate were considered the vital signs, and all could be easily measured and recorded. Pain level was different. In 1999, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations approved new mandatory standards for the assessment and treatment of pain.  But, unlike the other four vital signs, pain could not be externally measured.  Patients were asked to assess their own pain and the goal was no pain.  Sales rates and profits for opioid producing pharmaceutical companies skyrocketed.  The movement of opioid pain relief had begun and with it the cover up of the devastation and death from addiction.
The book describes several physicians and advocates who tried to stop this movement but were largely ignored.  It is the advocates who interest me. The people working to uncover wrong and stop harm. What separates these people willing to risk their own careers, comfort and peace to advocate for the most vulnerable? Is it the power of love and not the love of power?  People who are willing to stand up against wrong and challenge rules and institutions when they see harm are a special breed.  I think every time we challenge something we see as wrong we are doing God’s greatest work.

Enemies of Israel Pay the Price
By EARL COX
Special to The Record
Israel has a long history of standing up to bullies and their threats. They require not only an Iron Dome but also an iron fist, occasionally wrapped in a velvet glove, to protect her land and her people.
One of the first bullies to unleash taunts and threats against Israel was the Philistine giant Goliath. His military stance—and the future king of Israel’s response—is an example of how to stand up to bullies, whether individuals or nations.
Before David showed up at the battlefield, things weren’t going well. Goliath’s intimidation tactics were working. Fear had paralyzed King Saul’s army.  Nine-feet tall, armored to the teeth, and toting a formidable 14-kilo spear, this guy trained hard and was combat-seasoned. But above all, he was BIG. Israel’s present-day enemies are also “big”— in the sheer numbers of anti-Zionists, radical Islamists, and hostile leftists, globalists and thugs spewing threats, lies and insults like a giant corporate Goliath.
Due to fear, no soldier was willing to confront the giant. But fear is what feeds bullies. The best way to neutralize intimidation is to run at it with the right weapon in hand, which David did. Even school counselors in America, which is facing a rash of bullying, advises kids to look the bully in the eye without hesitation and stand their ground. Bullying only increases “when the bully realizes his victim is not going to stand up for himself,” says author Signe Whitson.
But the truth is, Goliath didn’t have much going for himself except for his colossal size.
His presumed victory was so narrowly focused on bigness that he rashly provoked a one-on-one contest—based not just on ancient custom but also on his own arrogance—that would haunt his people for years: “If [David] can fight and kill me, then we will become [Israel’s] subjects.”
Goliath’s gigantic ego was his undoing. His imperious belief in himself blinded his judgment and limited his focus. The mighty warrior —crippled by inadequate intelligence (in more ways than one)—underestimated his opponent. Could history be repeating itself?
In the giant’s eyes, David didn’t have much going for him. He was young and seemed inexperienced for war. After all, he had no armor or helmet, spear or sword.
Nor did he anticipate David’s speed, training, or motivation: David, zealous for Israel and the G-d of Israel, was appalled that an “uncircumcised Philistine” [defied] the armies of the living G-d.” (1 Sam. 17:26)
Mustered by Saul, David “ran quickly” toward Goliath and hurled a fatal stone into his forehead. The giant fell hard and before the shocked Philistines could react, David again “ran,” grabbed Goliath’s sword, and severed his head.
Unbeknownst to Goliath, David did train for adversity—as a shepherd under sometimes dangerous conditions. The flock’s enemies were his own enemies. He perfected his aim with a sling while guarding the sheep entrusted to his care. When a lion or bear attacked, David killed them head-on thus delivering the sheep from their jaws and laws. His training helped him develop an intense motivation foreign to Goliath’s low mentality. David’s heart was for Israel and for the G-d of Israel. This made him fearless.
Israel has had its share of lions, bears and Goliaths. They still stalk, sniffing at the borders, probing for vulnerabilities. They still brag, threaten and incite violence and fearmonger.
But they underestimate and fail to understand Israel, whose founding documents, laws and defense forces have a different motivation and moral code than to rob, hate, kill and destroy. Israel does not sacrifice its people to lions and bears—it defends them.
As in David’s day, present-day “Goliaths” know nothing of the G-d of Israel’s love for the land and people of Israel. David knew, so he was not afraid to face Goliath—or the “giants” that followed. It is also why he won a seemingly asymmetrical battle.
Let us run, with Israel, toward this band of giants, who share not just the attitude of the Goliath of old, but who also are making the same errors in judgment. Whether our slings are the written or spoken word, diplomacy, a timely vote, or another gift, let’s use it faithfully and fearlessly just as David did.
  An Invitation to Come Back
By CARL WHITE
Life in the Carolinas
It was an umbrella day for our cameras and everyone else in Shelby NC, and a lot of people had traveled to the town square for the much-anticipated opening of the Earl Scruggs Center.  Earl Eugene Scruggs was born in the nearby farming community of Flint Hill. Growing up, he had been surrounded by brothers and sisters who played the banjo and guitar, so it’s no surprise that they had a significant influence on his life.
The surprise, however, may have come when, at the age of twenty-one, Earl was invited to join Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Boys. This was just the beginning. Three years later he and Lester Flatt left the Bluegrass Boys and formed the Foggy Mountain Boys; before long the group was simply know as Flat and Scruggs. In 1955 the group joined the Grand Ole Opry and soon the incredibly successful Martha White brand sponsorship become synonymous with the sounds of Bluegrass music. Martha White Self-Rising Flour with Hot Rise “Goodness Gracious, It’s Good” became a common expression of the day.
Another significant public success came in 1962 with their release of "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" on the TV show The Beverly Hillbillies. Flat and Scruggs were guests on the show several times over the years.
The Flat and Scruggs band parted ways in 1969 and Earl went on to organize the Earl Scruggs Revue. They enjoyed much success and the three finger Scruggs style of banjo playing has charmed hundreds of millions of music listeners and players around the world.
The Earl Scruggs Center is located in the middle of the historic Shelby Town  Square in the old Court House and is all about the music and stories of the American South. I met a lot of great people on the opening day of the Scruggs Center, and we produced a good segment for Life in the Carolinas on the day’s activities.
After I finished my interviews I was leaving by one of the side doors of the center. I was greeted by someone saying, "Hi, Carl, welcome to Shelby. I’m Allen Langley and I’m a fan of your show."
We had a pleasant conversation, and Allen invited me to come back to Shelby and he gave me a list of things that he thought would be good stories. He shared his contact number and said he would be happy to assist in any way that he could. I come to discover that Allen was right about Cleveland County and he was also true to his word; when I called, he was very helpful in assisting with producing stories in Cleveland County. Allen leads a very busy life running his business activities. He is an active Rotarian, serves on various boards and has a big heart for those in need, with all that going on he found the time to help anyway. Allen is a good friend to have.
I was glad to discover that The American Legion World Series now calls Shelby NC its permanent home. When I met Eddie Holbrook, co-chairmen of the Executive Committee of the American Legion World Series, I came to understand the true power of his community.
I witnessed hundreds of people working together on projects that benefit their community at large. Eddie was the first to tell me that it’s always a team effort. And those around him told me of his tireless work and comment to benefiting everyone.
It seems like that’s the way community champions should be.I’ve been invited to return many times and I have always enjoyed by visits and continued new discoveries.
