Books that punched me in the throat:

Priory of the orange tree (one of the biggest books on this list, definitely worth the time it takes to read it. A series that gives its main characters hope for a future, the coolest depiction of dragons I’ve seen in a while, and will have you immediately turning around and restarting it as soon as you finish it)

She who became the sun- Shelley Parker-Chan (okay imagine if mulan dealt with gender and then got a girlfriend. Deals a lot with fate, politics, examines gender, and has a stunning ending)

Nona the ninth- tamsyn Muir (it’s tumblr. You’ve heard of the series, go pick up Gideon the ninth to start the series)

The jasmine throne/ The oleander sword- Tasha Suri (beautiful series, compelling characters, the first book establishes ghe story so well that by the time book two takes that sharp right turn into horror, you’ll be excited to see what happens next)

The unbroken - c l clark (deals with colonialism, broke my heart and pieced it back together. The writing style alone makes it worth reading, and every chapter you complete makes you feel like you e swallowed lightning)

The Sea Witch -Kate Roberts (monster romance, if I remember correctly. Fun, a little tiktok-ish in places but I’ve read about five of her books at this point so obviously that didn’t stop me)

Pestilence, War, Famine, Death - Laura thalassa (okay uts a romance series and each book deals with a different horseman of the apocalypse. I think the first one is the best but i enjoyed them all immensely. )

Mysteries:

The final girl support group- Grady Hendrix (final girls aka girls who have survived horrific murder attempts, are being hunted by someone, but will they find out who is trying to kill them before it’s too late)

The maid- Nina prose (murder mystery with a pretty obviously autistic main character, she’s accused of murder because her reactions are different than a neurotypical persons would be. One of my favorite murder twists at the end, but I’ll shut up in case i spoil it)

The binding- Bridget Collins (all you need to know is that memories can be taken away and stored, and that this is a great and mysterious read)

Misc:

How to keep house while drowning- k c Davis (how to clean with adhd basically. I found it very helpful!!!)

Crying in hmart- Michelle zauner (a memoir from singer/songwriter Michelle Zauner, she talks about reconnecting with her Korean heritage through food in the years after her mother’s death from cancer)

Worm- yknow. Worm the web serial (yeah worm the web serial what else do you need to know)

Mary Shelley's monster -- by which I mean the novel, not the creature in it -- has undergone so many dismemberings and reassemblages over two centuries that I doubt she would recognize it today. I certainly don't want to speculate about what she would think of Frankenhooker, which carries the premise of reanimating the dead to its sleaziest extreme. When Jeffrey Franken's (James Lorinz) fiancée, Elizabeth Shelley (Patty Mullen), dies in an accident that leaves him only her head, he takes what he has learned in the med schools he flunked out of and the equipment he has "borrowed" from his job in an electrical power plant, and sets out to collect other body parts with a view to reconstructing and reviving her. He finds the parts he needs on the women walking the seedier streets of Manhattan. How he collects them and how the plan goes awry involves, among other things, some explosive crack cocaine and a vengeful pimp. Yes, the movie is in the worst possible taste, with something to offend almost anyone. The acting is atrocious and the special effects are, let's say, marginal. But it's also some kind of classic -- cult or camp or exploitation, you label it. I can only say that if you don't laugh out loud at least once, you may need to reanimate yourself.

technically it’s probably twilight but let’s say it’s not, and in that case let’s say it’s the raven boys by maggie stiefvater. it’s definitely my most heavily annotated book and i tend to date my annotations and well there’s just a lot of them

15. recommend and review a book

ok ok gonna do my fave nonfiction i've read recently and some of you have been unlucky enough to hear me talk about it but it's the power broker by robert caro, it's a 1,200+ page brick of a nonfiction book published in the 1970's as a biography of robert moses and just new york city infrastructure in general. i read a lot of nonfiction and honestly a lot of the writing is just bad even if the content is interesting but this was seriously one of the most well-written pieces of work i've ever read and it completely changed the way i think about local government. some fun excerpts and all my notes:

granted, part of the fun was i read it with my dad and we had a lot of fun bonding over it, but still! it's been such a cool foundation for other works on urban studies, too - i recently finished davarian l baldwin's in the shadow of the ivory tower: how universities are plundering our cities and there was a whole chapter on new york that i felt really well-equipped to engage with

19. most disliked popular books?

ok not to be one of those ppl that are like teehee i hated it before it was problematic but genuinely i never got the hype about harry potter. i think the problem is i read them out obscenely out of order and probably just a little too young (i started with the order of the phoenix when i was 10) but nevertheless i've just never cared. more recently i read the midnight library and i was so unimpressed i was this could've just been a supernatural episode we didn't have to do all this
