šŸŽ‘ spinning records with dee dee: day 3 šŸŽ‘
Page and Plant ā€“ Rude World (1997)
This track stands out in Jimmyā€™s discography as being the only one where his signature guitar distortions are merged with digital beats and an overall more modern sound.
It was released as part of The Inner Flame ā€“ A Tribute to Rainer Ptacek, a tribute and benefit album put together by Howe Gelb and Robert Plant, with the purpose of helping the German-American musician with his mounting medical expenses during his battle with cancer. Many renowned artists contributed to the project, including Emmylou Harris, PJ Harvey, Lucinda Williams and Ptacek himself.

tma voice actors rated on how well they would play the character in live action
Jonathan Sims as The Archivist: 3/10. He just doesnt look pathetic enough. Its the poor little meow meow factor. He gets some points for looking like he might be just a little bit insane tho. Also, fun fact, when I started the podcast I was having trouble picturing Jon so I looked at a picture of Jonny and immediately went "...no. he doesnt look like that"
Alexander J Newall as Martin Blackwood: 0/10. Alex is an evil little man and you can tell by looking at him. Even without the suit, there's malice in those eyes. He is neither gentle nor a giant. Just an all around unpleasant experience, not a Martin!!
Alexander J Newall as Jared Hopworth: -10000/10. No explanation needed
Mike LeBeau as Tim Stoker: 9/10. Im pretty sure he is actually s1 Tim. He's very charming and good looking and just generally has the right personality. Season 3 is harder but I bet he has the range physically too!
Lottie Broomhall as Sasha James: 7/10. She looks very sweet and nerdy! Shed be a good fit. Not like shes around for long anyway...
Evelyn Hewett as Not-Sasha: 5/10. She also looks very sweet!!! Which is the problem!!! I dont think shes creepy enough... but that might actually make it more creepy?? Idk man, take a half rating
Ben Meredith as Elias Bouchard/Jonah Magnus: 4/10. Hes just not scary! Not to mention too young. However he gets points because it would be absolutely hilarious
Lydia Nicholas as Melanie King: 8/10. Something in their face just says "Im a nice person but I could kill you if I wanted to." I think she would really pull off the woman slowly losing her mind look
Hannah Brankin as Jane Prentiss: 7/10. I mean. Shes gonna be covered in worms anyway. Anyone will look terrifying with good enough sfx
Hannah Brankin as Rosie Zampano: 4/10. She looks very sweet but I feel like Rosie has this very specific vibe of well concealed yet visible rage that Hannah just doesnt have. Plus I imagine her being a bit older
Frank Voss as Basira Hussain: 5/10. Theyre too sweet! Basira is very serious and I just dont think I could be intimidated by Frank. They could definitely do the more emotional moments but they just dont look like they would hold someone at gunpoint!
Imogen Harris as Helen Richardson: 4/10. Similar situation to Not-Sasha. She doesnt look unhinged at all but the lack of unhinged energy might actually be creepier? -1 point for not having ringlets. Idk why I just cant imagine Helen without ringlets
Luke Booys as Michael Shelley: 15/10. Just put a wig on him and tip to toe that is a Michael! He has the perfect energy. Theres just something in those eyes that says "I have seen madness beyond your comprehension and I have become a part of that madness." I think hes an avatar of the Spiral irl based solely on his face. He doesnt even fit the canon description but hes just so perfect you cant cast anyone else
Fay Roberts as Daisy Tonner: 10/10. Ze looks very graceful and gentle yet also like ze can and will kill you which is the exact energy I get from Daisy. And their hair is so perfect for her too!! Like yeah thats Daisy!!
Carrie Cohen as Mary Keay: 10/10. Shes got the unhinged old woman energy down to a SCIENCE!! She is TERRIFYING!! Good for her!!
Sasha Sienna as Georgie Barker: 6/10. He looks very sweet, very strong cat mom energy but the problem is they just look too innocent. No offense but I just dont see death in her eyes
Guy Kelly as Mike Crew: 8/10. He looks pretty much exactly how I imagined Mike but I dont think hes tiny enough. Hes gotta be a real short king
Jessica Law as Nikola Orsinov: 11/10. Youre not allowed to cast anyone else!! Shes perfect!! Like Nikola doesnt even have a face but if she did thats what it would look like. There is a reason she gets typecast as a sentient human shaped object and its because she slays it both vocally and physically!!
Lowri Ann Davies as Lynne Hammond/Celia: 8/10. Im just enjoying imagining her in a cult
Francesca Renee Reid as Julia Montauk: 10/10. My only justification for this is that I am gay for both of them
Ian Hayles as Trevor Herbert: 8/10. Needs a little more chaotic bastard energy but nothing a little makeup cant help. Give him a more fucked up beard and put some dirt and blood on him. Thats Trevor!
Jon Gracey as Gerard Keay: 2/10. Hes Not Even Goth. Like I know you could just dress him up goth but its just not the same! We need an authentic goth actor for accurate goth representation! Points for being a weird nerd tho
Alasdair Stuart as Peter Lukas: 7/10. Alasdair is way too wholesome for Peter and I dont think I could be intimidated by him or see him as pathetic. HOWEVER I am giving him a bunch of extra points because I simply thinks he deserves to play Peter in live action. Alasdair is the OG Peter kinnie and who am I to deny him that right?
Russell A. Smith as Oliver Banks: 9/10. He looks so nice and handsome! Yet also a little depressed at the same time! Give him some dark circles under his eyes, and yep, he's Oliver!
Helen Gould as Laverne: 10/10. Theyre such a comforting presence. She could totally be a therapist. I would tell him all of my problems
Layla Mannings as Manuela Dominguez: 5/10. Shes too adorable! She doesnt look like someone who would try to extinguish the sun!
John Henry Falle as Arthur Nolan: 2/10. He definitely looks insane but not in a landlord kinda way ya know? He looks like he would commit arson but not like he would be a class traitor
Karim Kronfli as Simon Fairchild: 0/10. Hes like 50 tops. Simon is like 500 and appears 100. We need a man whos fucking decaying
Richard Soames as Eric Delano: 1/10. This Dude Is Like Thirty
Chioma Nwalioba as Annabelle Cane: 9/10. Shes adorable!! And I think Annabelle is adorable too!! She would look great in some vintage clothes. I would tell her all of my secrets I dont care if she would use them against me <3 I cant imagine her as a giant spider tho but Im sure she has the range
Ray Chong Nee as Mikaele Salesa: 10/10. He really does look like he would sell people cursed shit, he just has that eccentric vibe. Seems like hes a big dude too. Definitely the kind of guy to dramatically play the piano to reveal he was alive all along
Mabel Syrup as Dr. Jane Doe: 10/10. Looked at her instagram for ten seconds and nearly went insane. My brain cant process any of this. Thats the kind of vibes we need. Good for her
Anil Godigamuwe as Arun: 10/10. I literally just imagined him as Anil the entire time. I cant separate the actor from the character
Tim Ledsam as Jordan Kennedy: 10/10 but only if he wears the Gunpowder Tim getup and this is never addressed

haikyuu + musical theatre boys
hq characters & what theyā€™d be like as musical theatre boys - what theyā€™re good at, what kind of shows they book, how they are to work with, roles theyā€™d play, etc. | starring: sugawara, oikawa, bokuto, kuroo, tendou (+ tsukishima, kenma, akaashi)
for weeks my head has been full of hq!MT boys, inspired by over a decade of being a theatre kid, and @karasimpno has only enabled my debauchery. these are just a few of my faves, but i have more theatre boys where this came from so if this doesnā€™t flop maybe i will post more hehe
PART 2Ā
tw swearing, musical theatre references, oikawa slander
SUGAWARA [tenor]Ā this bitch is SO talented it should be illegal and he books like crazy. nothing like a pretty soft boi with the voice of an angel in musical theatre <3 not really a dancer but moves very well, also can act the house down like you think heā€™s this basic MT boy but then it turns out this mf has range and is not afraid to use it. will go from playing the sweetest, most charming leading man to a complex, terrifying villain, and the whiplash will make you fall in love with him. a dream to work with, obviously. very strong with classical text as well. his ability is frankly terrifying and far too powerful. the type of boy you cold read with once at a callback and never see again, but playing opposite him for those 2 minutes is enough to make you think about him for the rest of your life
lucas in the addams family, anthony in sweeney todd, the princeton/rod or nicky/trekkie/bad idea bear track in avenue Q, the emcee in cabaret PLS
OIKAWA [tenor]Ā letā€™s be real oikawa already has an MT personality and itā€™s the worst kind. he thinks heā€™s rachel berry but really heā€™s kurt. he still books though bc heā€™s pretty and sings like an angel~ he can move really well and his jazz/MT style dancing is very strong, can also tap a little but itā€™s like barely enough to get by. his acting is kinda mediocre but his stage presence is out of this world and heā€™s hot so it doesnā€™t rlly matter, he stays booking leading men & disney princes left and right. truly is very talented at what he does, heā€™s just so annoying about it and constantly fronting all these skills he does not have, like he keeps trying to put leading lady songs in his book in their original key which is just.... not what those pipes are built for girl. bringing a whole new meaning to the nickname ā€œflattykawaā€
fiyero in wicked, pippin in pippin, conrad in bye bye birdie, aaron samuels in mean girls, joseph in joseph & the amazing technicolor dreamcoat, just all the basic mt boy shit
BOKUTO [baritone, tenor, everything in between, HIS RANGE] an absolute star. all-around amazing dancer (those muscles arenā€™t just for show babyyy) but especially tap and partnering (imagine him just lifting u.. god) powerhouse vocals across the board, his diaphragm is insane. heā€™s the type of MT who is always yelling even when they arenā€™t on stage, not even aware of it heā€™s just loud asf. always spitting everywhere too. no one is safe. acting is probably his weakest point just bc he doesnā€™t have a lot of versatility style-wise, but in no way is he bad at it i meannnnn have u seen how expressive and energetic that man is?? he does literally any golden age musical comedy leading man soooo well and is a blast to work with, such posi vibes & the character choices his himbo brain comes up with are so silly theyā€™re genius
don lockwood in singin in the rain, gabey in on the town, bobby in crazy for you, jimmy in nice work if you can get it, robert in drowsy chaperone, will in oklahoma!
KUROO [baritenor]Ā one of those fuckers who started doing theatre by accident, and immediately started booking out the wazoo with no training because heā€™s naturally talented and hot. i hate him so much. has that ā€œidgaf i donā€™t have to tryā€ aura about him, but his work ethic is actually?? really good??? once he starts learning more he really does put the work in. has that feeling of ease in his stage presence & good instincts that make up for his lack of training, plus his vocals have no right sounding that good on their own wtf. fucker thinks heā€™s frank sinatra, and honestly, itā€™s criminal how good he is at golden age material when most of what he books is contemporary bc of his dumb hairĀ heā€™s not exactly a dancer but likeā€¦. bitch can move. plus heā€™s got body so that helps him a lot. mostly books leads anyway because thatā€™s just how it goes when ur a hotboy with charm and talent. also he can fieRCE classical text??!?? (hint: itā€™s bc heā€™s a nerd) just stop being talented already jesus
melchior in spring awakening, sky masterson in guys & dolls, demetrius in midsummer, BENEDICK IN MUCH ADO PLS I NEED IT FOR MY HEALTH
TENDOU [countertenor]Ā kicks ass at everything like heā€™s so talented and so versatile. vocals are insane, he has mad range and can do any number of character voices/impressions/dialects/what have you. his falsetto is unmatched (nice try flattykawa). we been knew his instincts are killer - character acting, comedy, improv, clown, mime, devised/alt theatre, contemporary MT, golden age MT, classical text you name it he can slay it all. his resume is so chaotic. he can body a super intense scene too, i feel like he trained in meisner & got traumatized from it and for a while he had an issue with getting too into character & doing crazy shit bc it was ā€œmethod,ā€ but eventually learned better<3 excellent mover, used to be a trina ballerina so his technique always shocks people even though heā€™s been out of practice for a long time (the dance world can be toxic and he was over it, so he yeeted all the way out of there a while ago). all around a wild human being with the ability to transform into numerous other wild human beings, creatures, abstract concepts, etc.
beetlejuice in beetlejuice, almost any track in cats but especially mungojerrie, mary sunshine in chicago, the porter in macbeth, CALIBAN IN THE TEMPEST PLEASEPLEASRPKEASE
----------------------
+BONUS: NOT MTs
characters who have zero MT energy but still fit elsewhere in the theatre world:
TSUKKI is a sound tech who is mean to performers esp during sound check, has a particular vitriol against MTs (except yamaguchi)
KENMAĀ is an ASM who rarely gives a fuck, also does lighting & projection design. doesnā€™t hate MTs like tsukki, but their energy is usually a lot for him so he tends to avoid
AKAASHI is a playwright & dramaturg, but he used to act and can recite shakespeare on a dime, sonnets, soliloquys, whatever ur heart desires <3 may also play an instrument and sometimes writes lil songs but he doesnā€™t flex them bc heā€™s shy bby

QULTUREā€™S TOP 20 SERIES OF 2018
Tumblr media
20. Ā BUSY TONIGHT
You guys! Good energy is, like, totally in right now. And itā€™s never going away. You may know her from Freaks and Geeks, but I know her from Cougar Town as CCā€™s fun-loving, super-supportive sidekick. When you watch Busy Phillips on her cheeky, positive-vibes only E! talk show, a sense of ā€œweā€™re all in this togetherā€ and ā€œbeing kind to one anotherā€ is definitely a recipe for demolishing disaster. Remember how major Chelseaā€™s career became because of what so many probably considered a silly little talk showā€¦ well. Iā€™m not a fortune teller or anything, but I could totally see Ms. Phillips taking over the universe. I want to be one of her minions. Cheers to another leading lady of late night!Ā
Tumblr media
19. THE VOICE
Iā€™ve always been anti-reality competition shows when it comes to singing, only because Iā€™m a total snob when it comes to what I subject my ears to. My musical tastes are versed and varied, but I still am pretty picky about who I let in to my drums, mostly because I need it to stimulate an eargasm and coincide with my lifeā€™s soundtrack. When American Idol launched, I definitely was enamored with Kelly Clarksonā€™s powerful vocals, but I still kept the close mind that an artist is discovered naturally, not ā€œcreatedā€ by producers with the backdrop and illusion that AMERICA gets to vote and pick the winner. Ah, who knows, maybe they doā€¦ I would just never take the time out to vote. HOWEVER. When I found out Kelly was going to be a judge on The Voice, which is a whole separate animal than Idol, I was shitting my pants with glee, because she really is such a goddamn force of fucking nature. Her spirit is overwhelmingly angelic and I simply love everything about watching her. Last seasonā€™s competition was magical, at least for me, perhaps because it was the first time I really got to experience the message and place the show has in the universe. It really is inspiring and lovely to see how much these artists themselves care for the teams they build and the individuals they want to see grow ā€“ regardless of whether or not it leads to fame. Alicia Keys and Kelly Clarksonā€™s dynamic was really something special that inspired me in so many ways.
Tumblr media
18. COMEDIANS IN CARS GETTING COFFEE
I love nothing more than a loose format, sans makeup, realistic conversation between famous people. Talk shows rock and all, but thereā€™s something to be said for two people we all know and (often) admire, getting together and doing something that, ya know, regular people do! Likeā€¦ go out to breakfast. I was never a fan of the Seinfeld sitcom, mostly because when it was popular it was kinda over my head and nothing that interested me. Iā€™d probably be more inclined to watch and enjoy it now because of how much Veep has made me adore Julia-Louis Dreyfus and now much Jerry Seinfeldā€™s Netflix series about himā€¦ getting coffeeā€¦ with comediansā€¦ has made me adore his admiration for vintage cars, honesty in humanity and one of the most important things we all seem to forget sometimes ā€“ which is to LAUGH! We live in such politically charged times, and while I get how important it is to talk about the very things we were always brainwashed to believe were impolite to talk about, we also need to be able to make jokes and not be so sensitive about everything. Ya heard?
Tumblr media
17. AMERICAā€™S NEXT TOP MODEL
Oh how I love me some Tyra, but it seems the future is all about Ashley Graham. Yet again ā€“ another fucking beautiful superhuman. I am really starting to hate that people even think of someone as ā€œplus sizeā€, but hey, itā€™s the world we live in. All I see when I look at her is someone with a whole lot of personality, gorgeous features and a personality that youā€™d be crazy to not gravitate toward. She is living proof that good vibes, energy and kindness (in the fashion industry?! How dare you!) go a long way. Tyra and Co. are doing such a bang-up job sending young women empowering messages about feeling safe in their own skin by infusing all shapes, sizes, colors and archetypes. This cycle was full of hilarious moments and was totally unpredictable. Despite her Trump-loving, Republican ways and complaining about being transformed into a ā€œfire-crotchā€, I was rooting for Liberty, Rio and Jeana to compete in the Top 3. That certainly evolved as the season went on, mainly because Jeanaā€™s insecurities were getting the best of her (she had alopecia and they convinced her to be the alien-like, bald beauty ā€“ which she looked 10X better as vs. wearing wigs) and Rio had the most off-putting temper tantrum that had me and my bestie Carlee yelling at the the TV, ā€œWho da fuck you think you talkinā€™ to?!ā€ as if we were speaking for Tyra. Be humble, girls! Beauty ainā€™t just skin deep. At the end of the day, I loved seeing Kyla take the crown, because her activism, big heart and growth really was something special at the end of the day. Keep up the good work! I want 1000 more cycles.
Tumblr media
16. SWEETBITTER
Starzā€™s adaptation of the best-selling novel by Stephanie Danler is short, but bittersweet. Ella Purnell is a breakout star, headlining the cast of unknowns who are all as equally as fantastic. I think thatā€™s one of my favorite things about it (Caitlin Fitzgerald, in particular, who definitely has that thing) ā€“ how naturally gifted the entire cast is. Purnell stars as Tess, an All-American girl from bumfuck who makes her way to New York City to chase the dream, even if she has no idea what it is yet. Any of you who have worked in the service industry as a waiter or waitress will appreciate the authenticity of how intimidating, grueling and chaotic the industry can beā€¦ but how much fun it can be once your shift is over.
Tumblr media
15. MANIAC
What is Netflixā€™s limited, vivid, disturbing, funny, emotional rollercoaster about? My brain is exploding from trying to analyze. Typically, in each episode, I get so lost in the perfection that is Emma Stone, Iā€™m completely enthralled by how inspiring it is to watch one of our most exceptional young talents only seem to get better and better. Itā€™s also always a pleasant surprise to see someone like Jonah Hill continue to prove himself as truly versatile. Remember when these two were just getting into stoner cinema and taking over the shelves at Blockbuster, during their Superbad days? Justin Theroux, plus. Sally Field, super-plus. Julia Garner (also of Ozark), a star on the rise! It might make you feel a little crazy while watching, but hey, we all go a little mad sometimes.
Tumblr media
14. SHARP OBJECTS
Gillian Flynnā€™s book to big screen success with Gone Girl made a lot of us anxious to see what would be translated next. Following the trend of mini-series, binge-worthy greatness and big stars coming to the ā€œsmallā€ screen, HBO announced Amy Adams would star in Sharp Objects, a dark, sultry murder mystery set in the swampy south that co-stars the amazing Patricia Clarkson ā€“ one of my absolute favorite actors. Iā€™ll never forget when I ā€œdiscoveredā€ her, in Lisa Cholodenkoā€™s High Art, one of my all-time faves. Thereā€™s a similar hypnotism with the limited series which also features a deliciously naked Chris Messina, and, of course, the direction of the man Iā€™d say is pretty much cinematic perfection these days ā€“ Jean Marc Valee. If you have not yet seen Dallas Buyers Club, and another all-time favorite of mine, Wild, you are missing out. Iā€™m assuming you have watched all of Big Little Lies once or twice, and canā€™t wait for season two next year. Neither can I. These are the people doing AWESOME awesome things in Hollywood.
Tumblr media
13. AMERICAN HORROR STORY: APOCALYPSE
So, Iā€™m always back and forth with AHS. I always love how visually stunning it is, but some seasons either lack substance or are literally just too fucking freaky for me to engage. I can not even set my eyes on Freak Show, thought Cults was too gory and scattered (although fresh off of the Trump presidency was a possible prediction of the future if we donā€™t all get our shit together) and definitely didnā€™t even give that Roanoke one a chance. The first two seasons rocked, and Gaga slayed in Hotel, but being that I love witches (Hocus Pocus, Witches of Eastwick) I have to say Coven is my favorite season. I love every Farmiga in life, Preciousā€™ Gaborey Sidibe always makes me laugh and Emma Roberts is a rock star. How gorgeous?! Sheā€™s also such a little asshole in the best way. Sheā€™s someone I can picture punching me in the face, and Iā€™d invite her to. Apocalypse is the best infusion of boy/girl magic and the ultimate comradery casting wise ā€“ as what could make for a perfect finale for the series ties all of Ryan Murphyā€™s brilliance together. Thatā€™s just my opinion ā€“ because I think a great series needs to know when to wrap it up, but these days everything is all about milking everything to the last drop, soā€¦ idk.
Tumblr media
12. THE CONNERS
Roseanne returning was definitely the best of the best in reboot land, until her big mouth got her fired from ABC and launched The Conners, which features the entire cast minus a dead mother. I still respect her as an artist and will always love when TV wasnā€™t so linked to the Twitterverse, but these days I guess everyone really does have to be super careful about the shit they say ā€“ especially when we should know better that racism isnā€™t cool. Itā€™s such an odd thing, because Roseanne was always so controversial, brave with their material, and was one of the first shows to have an out lesbian comedian/actress and character (the great Sandra Bernhard)ā€¦ soā€¦ idk. That Sarah Gilbert thoughā€¦ sheā€™s somethinā€™ special.
Tumblr media
11. THE GOOD PLACE
Kristen Bell!!!!!!! Thatā€™s all. Ok, well, thatā€™s not allā€¦ because Ted Danson is equally as amazing. Who wouldnā€™t love someone married to a dame like Mary Steenburgen?! Iā€™ve been a fan of his since Three Men (and a Little Lady!). The diversity, quick wit, modern spin on the classic sitcom and concept behind this hit NBC series reminds us of why the network is always killing it when it comes to delivering quality, quantity and maintaining its colorful edge. Iā€™m surprised I didnā€™t get into this show when it premiered, as season 4 approaches and the Globes, and surely the Emmyā€™s now are getting into recognizing genius when they see it. This show is filled with all the good feels! Maybe Heaven really is a place on Earth.
Tumblr media
10. WILL & GRACE
When the reboot of W&G first returned to NBC, I was a bit underwhelmed by some of the writing. It seemed forced and a bit insecure ā€“ but it just took a few episodes for them to really get back in the swing of things and season 2 of the return is really on point. Debra Messing is better than ever (congrats on a Globe nomination!), as are Eric, Megan and Sean Hayes ā€“ who Iā€™ve always greatly admired because of, what I like to consider his ā€œbig breakā€ ā€“ the film, Billyā€™s Hollywood Screen Kiss. Growing up gay, Will and Grace was a trailblazing, extremely important and relevant show to so many of us because there wasnā€™t much of that on TV. But Iā€™ll always remember that adorable indie of Seanā€™s. He should make more movies! I love him in Pieces of April too!
Tumblr media
9. I LOVE YOU AMERICA: with SARAH SILVERMAN
Sarah has always been my absolute favorite comedian. Jesus is Magic is probably one of the most brilliant stand-up comedy feature films Iā€™ve ever seen (are there many of those) combining music, comedy, political satire, sexually inappropriate and explicit linguisticsā€¦ nothing is off limits. From jokes about AIDS, Martin Luther King Jr. and the Holocaust, to her dead grandmotherā€™s rape to pussy jokes about child lesbians sheā€™s related to. On her new Hulu series, Silverman takes a tour of the great country we live in, United States of A, talking to Trump supporters, men and women of all colors, shapes and sizes and makes an honest, unbiased, non-judgmental effort to deliver an intellectual perspective on all things current and heated in the minds of many. I love her condescending approach, ability to keep her cool, remain true to herself and do something important with her career. Itā€™s a humbled and divine dose of reality that I think we all need, as at the end of the day sheā€™s basically trying to unite us and get people to understand that despite our differences, respect and kindness can truly inspire change.

8. POSE
First of all ā€“ watch Paris is Burning, if youā€™ve never seen it.
I remember when I worked for the super cool East-coast indie video chain, TLA Video, it was one of the most popular rentals in our Gay and Lesbian section, as it should be. Itā€™s a classic documentary that captures the heart, sole and strut of African American LGBTQ culture during the AIDS epidemic, when being a queen and going to the balls would begin to define what FIERCE meant for a generation. (Play: Azealia Banks, Fierce). Itā€™s one of RuPaulā€™s favorite movies and certainly inspiration for Ryan Murphyā€™s vivid and heartfelt FX series starring Evan Peters, James Van Der Beek, Kate Mara and a wonderful assortment of newcomers including the fetch, fierce, versatile and gorgeous MJ Rodriguez, Dominique Jackson and (MY FAVE) Indya Moore.

7. CAMPING
Ever since 13 Going on 30, Iā€™ve known Jennifer Garner was a unicorn. She has that innate ability to charm, impress and entertain us with charisma and natural comedic talent. When it comes to the American adaptation of the Brit series Camping, developed for HBO (in part with Girlsā€™ master Lena Dunham), the team surely arranged the most perfect blend of talent for both behind and in front of the camera. Garner brings the most complicated and hilarious nuances to her character and proves she is more than capable of leading a most diverse and perfectly perfect blend of talent.

6. OZARK
Janet McTeer!! OMG! This woman is amazing and really the force that makes the sophomore season of the hit Netflix drug smuggling/money laundering/gangsta livinā€™ series all the more bombastic. Sure, Jason Bateman continues to be awesome in every way, but the women on the latest season (even the creepy old meth lady who wants a baby at 99) really slay and own the show, keeping us on the edges of our seats and beyond impressed with how hard anyone with a vagina is proving that they are taking over the world these days. As if we needed more reasons to be obsessed with Laura Linney ā€“ she takes her character to new heights, getting more screen time and really being thrust into a more evolved dynamic ā€“ sort of how Robin Wright does on House of Cards. As though the audience was more drawn to the female than the male lead the series was built around. But Janet McTeer?! Holy fuck, Janet McTeer. Sheā€™ll make your skin crawl and keep you up at nightā€¦ binge-watching.

5. THE AFFAIR
Showtimeā€™s scandalous, suspenseful and intricate portrait of love, marriage and infidelity has been one of my must-see series since its debut. The entire cast is pure magic, especially the four leads ā€“ Dominic West, Ruth Wilson, Maura Tierney and Joshua Jackson. Iā€™m constantly lobbying for Tierney, who continues to blow my mind with everything from those perfect, pouty lips to the way she can make my heart melt with a single tear. Last season, the twists and turns were so unexpected ā€“ something so refreshing these days when it comes to storytelling ā€“ that none of us couldā€™ve ever seen coming what we now have to go into season five knowing (and grieving with, in my case). This is one of of those shows that stands tall from start to finish, and continues to inspire the way character and perspective is conveyed, as well as how we process it ourselves as an audience. Iā€™ve always been fascinated by the same story being told through different goggles ā€“ kind of like in The Rules of Attraction, or Go. I canā€™t wait to see how this show wraps up, as I am pretty certain we move into the final act, which in itself is always a great quality for a series to know when to wrap it up.

4. HERE & NOW
Alan Ball, oh how I love thee. In the evidence of his brilliance, my affection toward Ballā€™s beautiful writing and ability to conduct such a beautiful cinematic symphony began with Six Feet Under, as it did most. If ever there were a perfect start to finish seriesā€¦ Rare is the artistic bird who can take such a celebrated drama and weave the social and political issues into a horror series ā€“ which is what he did with the addictive True Blood, a show that I would find myself equally hypnotized and aroused by. Ballā€™s latest gem is yet again a celebration of why we love HBO, his observant mind and heart, and ability to recognize genius when he sees it, in regard to casting. The always wonderful Holly Hunter and Tim Robbins headline a cast of brave, beautiful talents ā€“ including the tiny miracle that is the birth-child of Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon, Sosie, who is one of my favorite actors/characters in this captivating new drama that celebrates all the feels of our current reality. Itā€™s a mixed blend of understanding the human condition and how people of all walks relate to one another while truggling with matters of the heart and psychological warfare.

3. RUPAULā€™S DRAG RACE
For ten seasons now, Queen of Drag, RuPaul Charles has been taking her dynasty and giving it a royal upgrade every season with eye-popping elements that consistently allow this groundbreaking competition series to be one of queer and pop cultureā€™s most celebrated. From the guest judges (Season X premiered with a Farrah Moan-esque Christina Aguilera dolled up for all the queens to gag over, which they did ā€“ myself included) to Michelle Visageā€™s dazzling eyewear collection to the costumes to the casting and the challenges ā€“ which get more and more innovative ā€“ Rupaulā€™s Drag Race has become a small empire that has the promise to spinning into so many different types of series and assure celebrity drag careers are a thing of the future, now more than ever. I loved the queens this season, especially my future husband Kameron Michaels (beautiful inside and out, boy or girl) and the well-deserved winner Aquaria. This was the second season in a row for me (I havenā€™t seen a lot of the previous seasons) where Ru got it absolutely perfect. Iā€™m also a huge fan of Viceā€™s The Trixie and Katya Show which you should get into as well!
Tumblr media
2. THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL
All of the hype surrounding the Golden Globe & Emmy winning Amazon Prime series starring the incomparable Rachel Brosnahan as Mrs. Maisel, is the type of perfection that isnā€™t all-talk. Everything youā€™ve heard about this hilarious gem of a binge-worthy comedy is true: the costumes, the production design, the brilliant performances, directing and top-notch writing is on trend with celebrating everything we love about women in the world right now, and the time capsule reminds us of how far everyone has come marching to the beat of optimism and fighting for equality. Iā€™m so happy the great Alex Borstein has been honored and been receiving praise for her work, and rightfully so, as she steals scenes from the great Maisel herself in the latest season. Itā€™s truly one of the best watches out there, so get into it!
Tumblr media
1. SCHITTā€™S CREEK
What started out as a little Canadian sitcom from a then unknown Pop TV, has since become a pop culture phenomenon and one of the small screenā€™s most celebrated, quoted and adored comedies out there. In Season four, we continue to follow the Roseā€™s on their journey of personal growth, going from riches to rags in a small bumfuck town where they clearly stick out like a redneck tooth fairy for plenty of good reasons. We already knew Catherine Oā€™Hara and Eugene Levy were totes brilliant, but every season I grow more and more enamored with how crazy talented Dan Levy & Annie Murphy are. Their nuances, the way the arcs of their characters have evolvedā€¦ itā€™s like their learning from two comic legends and its working for them every step of the way. This is truly already an iconic, feel good show that is spreading such messages of love and beauty throughout society. Loves it!

J Murph & Lou ā€“ J Murph & Lou ā€“ Photo by Monica Dtc
Bug is the third and final pearl in the string of albums released by the original formation of Dinosaur Jr. The music here shows the band moving into ever more orderly realms of composition and structure, even as anecdotal evidence suggests that they were coming apart at their physical seams.
After the release of Bug, Dinosaur changed their name to Dinosaur Jr, due to the protests of a band of San Francisco ballroom-era leftovers. This seemed incredibly stupid at the time, but now it is possible to see as both a remark (by the hippies) that the band was starting to become known, as well as one by the band that they didnā€™t give a fuck. It was in this time that people truly began to appreciate the power of the songs that had always lurked inside the bandā€™s sonic cataclysm. Live shows of the period were incredible. They harnessed a very special kind of aggression like no one els,e and the emotional turmoil inside the band frequently erupted into something cathartic and Brobdingnagian. J had moved to New York City, and there was a new sense of disconnect within the band. Lou was doing his own recordings for Homestead, Murph was playing more aggressively than ever, and J was kinda doing his own thing. Without any songwriting input from Barlow, the material for Bug was scripted entirely by Mascis, and when it was time to record the stuff, J had very specific ideas about how everyoneā€™s part should be played. If the band prior to this had been operating in at least a faux-democratic way, that pretense was now shucked. It was, it seemed, Jā€™s band. And this knowledge (both within and without the group) loaded some of their live shows with a particularly furious edge.
There might be true havoc on stage, now and then, as J and Louā€™s antipathy towards each other increased, but more often this negative gush was channeled into an orgy of magnificent meat music. The trioā€™s roar ā€“ one that had initially seemed impossible to contain or control ā€” began to assume a comprehendible shape in front of an audience that was familiar with the material (from the records) and attuned to its details. Not all their live shows were perfect, but there were lots of great ones, and their first trip to Europe in late ā€™87, brought them before a group of people who were both delighted and mystified by their utterly American combination of explosions and mopery. The British press fawned over them (in their own tongue-in-ass fashion), but Dinosaur Jrā€™s true impact was on the audiences, who were absolutely ready for the stylistic shift into post-core non-ironic-rock that the bandā€™s music suggested. Indeed, it is postulated that a whole generation of British ā€œshoegazerā€ bands sprang up as a reaction to that first visit. Even if this is hyperbole, it is undeniable that Dinosaur Jr were offering a way out of the noise morass for certain group of misfits.
Their songs were complex in a way that seemed both simple and intuitive, their lyrics were sad and reflective without appearing obnoxiously introspective. These were graspable creative tenets, so it made sense that they would be aped. And aped they were. The bandā€™s profile on the American scene was growing exponentially at the same time. This had been something in the making for a while, but their popularity was blown wide open by Bug, and its accompanying single, ā€œFreak Sceneā€ ā€” a classic slab by any known yardstick.
Robert Pollard (of Guided By Voices) remembers, ā€œI bought their first album when it came out and I couldnā€™t figure out what the fuck it was. I couldnā€™t tell if they were nerds or goth heads or what. I thought they looked cool, but I couldnā€™t figure out what time period they were about. That first album was mesmerizing, but it was so strange. The picture with the sun on the cover just confused me. The music was recorded real lo-fi, but they didnā€™t fit into anything that was going on. When you listened to it, you might think parts of it were from the late ā€˜60s or early ā€˜70s. I mean, what was it? Sort of a dark psych metal but with punk roots.
ā€œThe bandā€™s whole approach reminded me of something our band was doing a little later, because they were burying strong melodies inside of this total sonic attack. There was almost something sinister underlying everything, but it was beautiful, too. There was always something hidden inside their songs. When I thought my lyrics were corny, we would use tape hiss to cover up the sentiments and fuck things up. It seemed like they were trying to fuck up their music by the craziness of their attack,
ā€œAnd each of their albums just got better and better. They really are one of the few bands that, to this day, I get out all of their early catalogue and listen to them all in a row, all the way through. I still do that every so often. The amazing thing about their songs is that even though they were all sonically heavy, almost every one of them has the ability to give me a chill. The first songs on their albums were always great. Like ā€˜Forget the Swan.ā€™ That may be my favorite. But they had so many great ones ā€“ ā€˜Little Fury Things, ā€˜Budgeā€™ ā€“ theyā€™re all great. I even like ā€˜Poledoā€™! (laughs) That one actually sounded more like the way we were doing things then. But my favorite album is definitely Bug. They were so solid musically by that time, and every song on it is good.
ā€œIt was also around that time that I saw them play in Cincinnati. I saw them with Murph and Lou one weekend at this club that had all the heavy bands right then, like Big Chief and Nirvana. They were really loud, and J was such a great guitar player ā€” one of the best in the world. I just loved that band.ā€
As they rolled on, there was no lack of people whoā€™d second Pollardā€™s sentiments. ā€œFreak Sceneā€ became one of the great college rock anthems of ā€™88. A beautiful blend of confusion, neo-folkie yearning and guitar belligerence, the songs still slays. But thereā€™s so much great stuff on Bug. One of my personal faves is ā€œDonā€™t,ā€ which is like a perfect post-core version of a track from the Stoogesā€™ Funhouse. Repeat-o sludge riffs up the wazoo, absolutely raunched guitar textures, and bellered vocals (which J, perversely, had Lou sing) that ask a perplexingly simple question, ā€œWhy donā€™t you like me?ā€ What could be better?
Well, one thing that could have been better, one presumed, was morale inside the band. They didnā€™t last all that long after the completion of Bug and the tours to support it. Dinosaur Jr continued in name for a good while, and they released some great records. But there is something totally organic and beautiful about the first three albums. They represent a creative arc that begins with teenage hardcore sput and ends with the dream of guitar heroism. And its an arc that many followed, but one this trio defined. Once and for all. Over and out. Amen.

Episode 128 : Crystalline Carbon
"...as long as I'm alive, I will make it."
- Kim Stephens
It's been a subdued start to the year in the main, and my equipment may have conspired against me, but nothing was getting in the way of the first podcast episode of the decade! There are definitely some popular classics in the selection, right next to brand new releases, and some slightly older tracks which deserve a second - or even first - chance in your headphones.Ā
Twitter : @airadam13
Playlist/Notes
Roc Marciano : Richard Gear
Roc is the absolute master of this style, and he's back with a new LP release, "Marcielago". If you like this vibe, then you're in for a treat as he carries it over the whole project. It's easy to forget that he's not just penning all those rhymes, but producing the beats as well. He's self-taught and beautifully individual in approach - a leader, not a follower.
[Alchemist] Mobb Deep : The Realest (Instrumental)
One of the most straightforward beats in Al's career - a two-bar loop with nothing added. It was originally going to be an interlude on the Defari "Focused Daily" album, but eventually became a standout on Mobb Deep's "Murda Muzik". This exact instrumental version is on the now-deleted "Gangster Theme Music" collection, but you could pretty much just loop up the start of the Mobb track :)
Trae Tha Truth : Even Tho Its Hard (sic)
A fairly recent release from Trae, taken from his eleventh album, "Exhale". This is a real struggle anthem, voiced by a man whose mic skills are too often overlooked. This is bell-clear rhyming, where you can pick out every single word - aided by the production not fighting him too much for focus. (Once again, this is a case where my digital purchase doesn't contain the credits to enable me to shout out the producer. Fix it, record companies!)
O.C. : The Chosen One
It's been a little while - well over four years - since we visited the "Jewelz" album, so it's about time we came back. Buckwild brings together the jazz and soul to craft the beat on this one, and O.C. strides over it like a king surveying his subjects. The whole album was criminally underrated when it came out, with many just expecting a re-tread of the "Time's Up" sound. A lot went into making it, and it took many listeners a while to catch up - but they did!
Flamingosis : You Were Meant For Me
A nice little piece from a New Jersey producer whose catalogue has a certain sunniness that you just have to listen to understand! Pick up the "Flight Fantastic" album and keep it in the stash until warmer weather arrives...
Statik Selektah & Termanology ft. Mtume : Never Let My City Down
Yes, Mtume of "Juicy Fruit" fame! The "Still 1982" LP from Statik and Term contained this little gem, where I'm not sureĀ exactly who did what apart from the rhymes, but it works. Termanology's flow glides over this with confidence, and even the way the track winds down is expertly done.
9th Wonder : SuperChopFunk!!!!
Yes, all those exclamation points are part of the actual track title... Anyway, the beat is signature 9th Wonder material, drawn from his mostly-instrumental "Zion III" mixtape. With forty-two tracks in total, you can't say he didn't give you value for money!
Krumbsnatcha : Start Writing
I found this while having a flick through Spotify, and was glad I did! The "Iron Will Ninja Shinobi" album came out about a year ago, and it's good to see Krumb out there and still recording. The beat here is dark and menacing, sounding like a Hip-Hop contribution to the "The Terminator" soundtrack, and KS has no trouble matching that vibe on the mic.
David Bars ft. DJ Premier : Beat The Odds
If you don't know him already, it feels like you will pretty soon! Bronx native Bars getting co-signs from some of the best producers to ever do it - DITC, Beatminerz, and DJ Premier, who gave him this beat to rip! "The Bar Code" EP is the release to check to get a fuller picture of what Bars is bringing.
Meyhem Lauren ft. Big Body Bes : Badmon Ting
That "Ā”Caballito!" adlib will never fail to be amusing! Meyhem is not so much underrated as not well-enough known in my opinion, but he's a beast of an MC. "Gucci kicks got me looking like a pointsettia"? Come on now. Find this DJ Farhot produced track on the 2017 "Piatto D'Oro" album, named after a now-closed NYC restaurant - Meyhem does love the kitchen!
Natural Elements : N.E. Definitely
One of the great crews for the connoisseurs, NE were true kings of the underground right off the bat. Charlemagne provided the beats and L-Swift, A-Butta, and Mr.Voodoo brought bars by the trailerload! Many of the tracks from that era have been collected on the recently-released "1999 : 20 Year Anniversary" collection, of which this is one. Definite recommendation for those who like that real.
[Ali Shaheed Muhammad] Faith Evans : You Used To Love Me (Remix Instrumental)
I was happy to realise I hadn't already used this instrumental on a past episode! This neo-souled-out beat gave Faith's voice more space than the original from her debut album, which was dope in its own right.
Robert Glasper Experiment ft. Brandy : What Are We Doing?
One of the best tracks on the excellent "Black Radio 2", easily. The drummer pushes this one forward constantly, playing a little ahead of the beat as though not completely under control, and the bass and keys fill in a track that would tear down any after-hours spot. And those vocals...you might just write Brandy off as some pop artist because you know her radio singles, but you'd be very wrong. This is a track with the space to expose anyone lacking skills, and she slays it. Recognise!
Children of Zeus : Get What's Yours
New release from Manchester's own Children of Zeus, who are on a flawless run right now. A soulful motivational cut that opens up with the vocals of Tyler Daley before he goes back and forth with Konny Kon on the rhymes. The closing vocals and piano (if you go and hear the full version) round it off exquisitely. Get this on the "Two Syllables, Volume Sixteen" compilation.
Lauryn Hill : Lost Ones
The drums of the Zeus track reminded me of this, so I figured there was probably no better time for me to play it! For me, it's a battle between this and "Everything Is Everything" for best track on the only real Lauryn solo LP, "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" - a monster seller for sure. By all accounts firing shots at Wyclef, you can feel the focused anger in this one.
Kool G Rap : My Life
This was a pretty big single from the Rawkus Records part of G Rap's career, which made noise on the 2002 Hip-Hop charts as well as being a mixtape staple of the time. V.I.C (from the original Beatnuts producer crew) brings the beat, and an artist called G-Wise shows out on the talkbox. The official release of "The Giancana Story" album contains this one, as well as an alternate version featuring Capone-N-Noreaga.
Pete Rock : Stop Dat (Instrumental)
Sparse mastery from Soul Brother #1. The most recent release of the 2004 Edo G and Pete Rock LP "My Own Worst Enemy" helpfully contains all the instrumentals for when you want some unfiltered PR, and so is a recommended pickup for DJs at a minimum.
Raekwon ft. Kim Stephens : Jury
Allegedly, this track is actually supposed to be called "Jewelry", but for a typo in the tracklisting! We close the episode with a second track taken from a poorly-received sophomore album, 1999's "Immobilarity". Infinite Arkatechz, who handled the vast majority of the production, clearly picked up a Chris Spheeris compilation and ran wild with it, but this was definitely the track where that choice made the most impact. "Andalu" has nowhere near the cold, pensive feel of this song, which is classic Raekwon for me, as he tells the story of the start of the Wu from his perspective. This month's epigraph could have been any number of the lyrics from here, which paint pictures and describe feelings that I expect many besides me will relate to. On top of all that, Kim Stephens does a great job on the hook, on what may be her only ever recorded appearance. This isn't a track you put in the middle of a mix, you either start with it or end with it.Ā
Please remember to support the artists you like! The purpose of putting the podcast out and providing the full tracklist is to try and give some light, so do use the songs on each episode as a starting point to search out more material. If you have Spotify in your country it's a great way to explore, but otherwise there's always Youtube and the like. Seeing your favourite artists live is the best way to put money in their pockets, and buy the vinyl/CDs/downloads of the stuff you like the most!
Check out this episode!
