‘Bumbo sat on the broad, raised wooden fender in the Officers’ Guard Room of St. James’s Palace. Behind him, the portrait of the young Queen Victoria looked across the table, set with silver and glass and white napkins, and with the thirteenth authentic hoof of Napoleon’s horse, Marengo, now made into a snuff-box. Bumbo sat, facing the historical screen, stuck over with coloured pictures, many years old, pictures of Pitt and musket-men and Redcoat heroics. Every so often, a drunk officer would take Marlborough’s sword out of its glass case, and slash at the screen, and later pay for its repair. There were five of them at dinner; Farquhar, and Farquhar’s friend from the City; salacious Captain Jinks; and the Ensigns, Bumbo Bailey and Outram Utterluck. They had eaten borsch, oysters, pheasant, and rum soufflé. The port had been circulating for half an hour…’ Andrew Sinclair.
