I can’t recommend the Tiffany Aching books enough.

There are 5 books that span the preteen to young adult events of a young witch from a barren place known as The Chalk outside of Ank-Morpork. These are lesser known gems that I cherish deeply. They were written with young readers in mind, but they’re absolutely comfort food (particularly if you were raised by a Scottish granny like me- listening to Stephen Briggs read the Nac Mac Feegles make me homesick). They were all available via audio book from my library app (libby).

"Angry robin" "violent robin" "misbehaving robin" shut up and accept my alternative; spunky Robin. Determined and head strong, can out-stubborn the Batman, has a strong moral-backbone and does what he thinks is right regardless of what anybody else says, Robin. Jason who was sassy and quippy and made crude jokes with a smile on his face. Jason who hid in Bruce's cape and whispered gossip to him. Jason who, if Bruce refused him something, could keep bothering endlessly until Bruce caved. And also dramatic Jason. If Bruce tells him no, it becomes a whole theatrical show; a monologue, a narration, embellishments, and falling onto the floor in his grief upon the fact his cruel father has denied him once again.

(Jason who has suffered through abuse and homelessness and poverty and starvation, who is the Fight out of Fight or Flight, who's built up defenses and walls and when pushed and triggered responds with the thing that's always protected him; anger. He's sweet and kind and funny, and when he sees a pimp hitting a prostitute he gets furious and responds with violence.)

There's this article from 1984 about the rise of villainous blondes in movies that I'm reading — and while it's interesting, all I really care about are the sections on The Karate Kid and interviewing William Zabka on the subject lol

First, great way to describe William Zabka's/Johnny's platinum bangs.

Reminder: this article released in 1984. So it's little squeaky-voiced Zabka saying this about himself.

Just LOVED the way this is phrased about the Cobras LOL (nooo don't forget about Token Brunet Jimmy 😭)

What I found MOST intriguing though is that Zabka apparently shares This about him and his costars:

Let me tell y’all I HATE it when people write characters out to be so perfect - clicks for Palestine

NO! PERFECTION IN IMPERFECTION! 141 WITH IMPERFECTIONS!

Soap with acne scars from his teenager days when he couldn’t stop picking at his pimples, scabs and scars littering his legs and thighs from mosquito bites and having exactly no impulse control. Soap developing smile lines and if you looked at him from a certain angle you could see the shadow of it appear on his face even if he isn’t smiling. Delilah dimples and chapped lips, having a bad habit of scratching the back of his neck.

Ghost with a soft jawline, pimples dotting his forehead and cheeks from the mask, blackheads on his nose. Scratch marks where his mask ends at his neck, a bit of a soft tummy and jagged scars lining though his whole body. Bad stitches healed through making his calf look like a disfigured mess, Glasgow smiles and one eye just smaller than the other. A patch of hair at the back of his skull will never grow again due to burn scars.

Gaz with a bad habit of picking his lips, biting and tugging on them during high-stress situations. Nervous and almost imperceptible tics like cracking his knuckles or spinning his ankle around, not being able to stand still for some strange reason. Hip dips. Back acne with an impeccable skincare routine. Complains about blisters and aching on his feet and is most likely to sweat BUCKETS right when they step out of the helicopter.

Price that’s slowly getting a receding hairline, absurd hacking coughs due to the cigars he smokes, a scar creeping up his collar and stopping right below the edge of his jaw. He has a slightly limp on his left leg if you look close enough, and he’s hairy as shit. He’s basically a bear he doesn’t even really try to shave cause he has no time for that. He has one of those belly buttons where the flesh is on the outside and is so ticklish but no one knows about it.
