what pokemon characters do you wanna write about? 👀👀 besides dommy daddy rika ofc ofc
Most characters I write about nowadays are kind of side swept gym leaders or characters that usually get overshadowed by super popular characters in their same Gen
This is mostly dudes aaa since a lot of the women I really like I've already written for
Morty🥰😘😚
Falkner Volkner
I wrote about roark a few times.
Wallace and Eusine He's a cutie
Oh my God I really want to write about a lot of elite four especially Lucian and Will💖😘❤️(I have this crackpot theory that Lucian and Will are Avery's older brothers or at least related)
Avery is also in this list.
(I really really want to right a Avery X reader where his Brothers come to visit him and they see you [let's just say Avery and you have a complicated relationship] and So they decide just once they'll help their little brother out. Orr tease him a little bit, just to give Avery that push to finally let go of his feelings (jealous Avery anyone) )
Obviously the champions but I'm more likely to lean towards Lance and Steven because I don't get to write about them often.
Milo it's such a cutie Oh my god
I really have bisexual thoughts about some characters in the Pokémon New horizons anime You probably know who (Freide and Orla my beloved also that fucker with the Umbreon I don't know his name I love him)
I have some thoughts about lieutenant Surge👀
Aaaa someday Brycen (especially Brycen Man I don't know why but I spin him around in my brain every night. PokeStar studios still got a grip on my soul)
Burgh👀
Larry and kabu but recently leaning more towards Kabu since I write Larry quite a bit
I want to write Lorelei but her cool woman aura frightens my poor gay heart.
Grushaaaa aaaaa
GEETA AAA
Still think about Nanu
Brassius🥰❤️👏 Brassius x reader x Hassel💖💖😘❤️😘😍😘
Professor Sycamore
💖😘😍Dulse🥰❤️(nobody probably remembers or knows him but I never forget him He's the love of my life.)

Glenn Rambo
Glenn Marshall Rambo was born on December 4th, 1970 in Alice, Jim Wells County, Texas. His father was Gary W Rambo, and mother, Rebecca Anne Roark. Though he had siblings on his mother’s side, I’m unsure if there are any on his father’s side.
Tumblr media
There wasn’t a whole lot that I could find about Glenn’s life, other than some old forum posts that talked of him posthumously. On my death space, there was a post from the user “Puke”, who copied and pasted a letter/description about Glenn Rambo, and the life that he lived.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Glenn was raised by his mother and grandmother in Violet, Louisiana, St. Bernard Parish, the New Orleans area. He was “blessed/cursed’ with a unique appearance “which some found strange or evil”, and would lead him to be harassed on a daily basis, by closed-minded law enforcement and those who called him and his family “witches”. Others in St. Bernard would always see Glenn walking everywhere, with a big boombox on his shoulder, taking his time and listening to his music. He soon acquired the affectionate nickname “Lilac Ozzy”, finding a safe haven connecting with “freaks” like himself in the growing underground Hardcore/punk/metal scene in New Orleans.
Tumblr media
Eventually starting a band called Nuclear Crucifixion in the mid 80’s with friends Donovan Punch, Brian Patton, Dave Moran, and Darren Shallenberg. This band would eventually morph into the early iterations of Soilent Green. Their shows would be memorable not only for their “ahead-of-their-time” fusion style, but also Glenn’s outrageous stage persona. He was a true performance artist, as recalled, and would eventually end up singing with bands like “Nun Molesters”, “GM Pussy Bitch”, and “Swarm”. Glenn is remembered as the guy that, “knew every lyric, every riff, and who had such an extensive knowledge (of) music in general, that you could talk for hours and hours with him, and he’d just keep recommending new bands, or pulling out obscure and arcane types of music you may not have heard of”.
Despite people thinking that he was sinister, he was actually “one of the most genuine, loving, intelligent people you’d ever meet.”. He’s remembered for his dark and piercing appearance, while also having an absolutely hypnotic speaking voice. Low, modulated, and subtle; a true Southern gentleman. Glenn loved reading, obtaining information, and devoured books. He was always thirsty for knowledge, and a deeper understanding of spirituality. “No garden variety Satanist”, Glenn was more interested in human nature and all its darkness. Wise beyond his years, he was also very sensitive. You could talk to him seriously about any number of topics. He also had a keen sense of humor, and a sense of absurdity. Glenn was a lover of animals, who he adopted a whole flock, and called them his babies. He’d walk around the French Quarter with his beloved ferrets stuffed in his pockets, sneaking up his jacket, curled around his neck.
Glenn had epilepsy, which caused him to be on meds his whole life; the condition gave him seizures, but he considered it a blessing in disguise, because it “gave him visions that other people couldn’t see.”. His mother had epilepsy too.
He would take something potentially tragic, and turn it into something unique and magical. When he’d see you, he’d come over to give you a hug and a kiss. Glenn is recalled as a healing presence, a truly enchanting soul.
Glenn stayed in Voilet, Louisiana because he and his mother didn’t have a car, his leg was broken, and he didn’t have anywhere to evacuate to. He thought that they could just bear down, and ride out the storm. They may not have wanted to leave the comfort of their home, when they didn’t have anywhere to go to. But, “when the levees broke, they didn’t stand a chance.”.
Tumblr media
One of his favorite quotes was, “Invoke me under my stars! Love is the law, love under will. Nor let the fools mistake love; for there are love and love. There is the dove, and there is the serpent. Choose ye well! He, my prophet, hath chosen knowing the law of the fortress, and the great mystery of the house of God.” Liber al vel Legis 1:57, Aleister Crowley.
Tumblr media
♦♦♦ [Music History] ♦♦♦
On the metal archives, Glenn’s musical history is still rather vague. It lists that he sang for the bands mentioned before, though the only ones with dates or links seems to be Soilent Green and Nuclear Crucifixion, as of June 2023. I’m not sure what the exact time frame was for the other bands.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nuclear Crucifixion is listed as having been from New Orleans, Louisiana; one source states Metairie in particular. They formed in 1987, and lasted through 1988, though the archive also states 1989. I don’t know the info about that specifically. This iteration of the band had 2 demos, the first being “Killing Ourselves To Live”, in 1987, and the second, “Torture of Humanity”, in 1988. The former starts with a song titled, “Nuclear Vomit”, which was later reworked into some Soilent Green songs, like “Numb Around The Heart”. Both demo releases were on cassette, no label. The band was also listed as being spelled “Crucifixtion”, with a T, and at some point it was called “Seveth”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The band’s music was very underground, with this general old school Death Metal feel, which is right on par with the nearby Florida Death Metal scene that exploded around that time period. Though it may be obvious to those my age and older, for the younger audience, it seems that the band’s name was inspired by the idea of nuclear fallout. During this time period in the US, with the cold war, many pieces of media reflect this fear; the first to come to mind for me, is ‘Retaliation’ by Carnivore.
The first NC demo was spelled “Nuclear Crucifixtion”. The band photo that is found on the metal archives was taken by Al Hodge of Tungsten, in what was Donovan Punch’s grandmother’s garage. The garage was where they practiced, the area previously having been used as a dance studio by his grandma. Soilent Green also practiced there when they formed, and in the early 90’s Jason Pizzolato’s band Apostasy would play shows with Soilent Green.
Tumblr media
Sammy Duet, second to the left, wearing a ‘Nun Molesters’ shirt.
While “Nun Molesters” isn’t listed as its own page on the metal archives or discogs, a few videos from Jason Pizzalato dates the band at having played from 1989-1991. I assume that this was virtually a name change for the band Nuclear Crucifixion, since it had similar members. The band had a man named Joey Hall who was on vocals for the demos and shows, but it should be noted that the band would switch instruments, and invite friends and audience members to join them on stage. Glenn is actually listed as having played drums here.
Glenn would include their Nun Molester recordings at the end of some demo tapes for Soilent Green that he dubbed and sold. As Pizzolato said, “Classic Nun Molester songs include, ‘We Like Smoking Weed’ and ‘Big Pussy’.”. Joey Hall is listed as having later become a cop.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nun Molesters seemed like a hilarious band to see live, as the demos were quite silly. Though musically great, the eloquence of “I like to eat vagina” cannot be understated. Or maybe that was Nuclear Crucifixion? :p
A video from the amazing ‘Acid Bath Archive’ actually shows a small snippet in time of Nuclear Crucifixion’s life, where Glenn Rambo and Brian Patton were interviewed. The interview was from Pagan Fest, July 22nd, 1988, which took place in Dallas, Texas.
A cassette of the first NC demo is shown, with some footage of the band playing. Glenn stated that they decided to play at Pagan Fest because they really like Dallas, and how the people would listen to music and “accept it for what it is, instead of denying it for it ain’t.”. When asked if he’d still help underground bands if they got famous, Glenn said that he absolutely would.
Tumblr media
In 1988, Soilent Green was formed. Also having Rambo, of course, the band’s first iteration seemed to consist of him, Brian Patton, Donovan Punch, Marcel Trenchard, and Tommy Buckley. Some of the earliest demos, as posted by Jason Pizzolato, state that Soilent formed after the ashes of Nuclear Crucifixion. Once again, the time frame is a little confusing, and I don’t know if Nun Molesters was its own separate entity from Soilent. The metal archives states that Soilent was formed after Rambo, Punch, and Patton left Nuclear Crucifixion, though I am unsure what their reasons are, for why they left that band.
The early iteration of Soilent Green is vastly different from the records we know today. A 1989 demo provides a thrashy feel, and the ones from 1990 have that underground early Death Metal feel. The tracks posted by Pizzolato remind me a lot of Macabre’s album “Dahmer”, which actually came out 10 years after those! Early Soilent had this fantastic Death Metal feel which could have really turned them into a major forerunner of the genre, at least, in my eyes. Or ears. It feels like the sound that they achieved in 1990 seemed to be somewhere that Glenn wanted to achieve, as his vocals settled in the Death range, and to me, were great! I’m reminded a lot of bands like ‘Ripping Corpse’, ‘Death’, and ‘Baphomet’. It almost makes me sad that this iteration of the band didn’t continue on.
In 1989, the band released their first demo, which was on cassette. According to videos of the demo by Pizzolato, the demo was recorded at Protech Productions, in Marrero, Louisiana.
In 1991, a demo was released called ‘Satanic Drug Fog’ which was recorded in 1990 in Baytown, Texas. This was recorded the same time as their other demo, ‘Squiggly’. Squiggly is also known as ‘Squiggly Demons’ and ‘Soilent Green’. Both were on cassette. Ten songs were recorded total, with 2 being left off the tapes. I am unsure why, let alone whatever happened to those songs.
In 1991, a 7” vinyl was released that had 4 songs, one being from Soilent Green. The song was “Circle of Death”, which was on side B. The other songs included were, “Waiting in Silence” by Slugs (also on Side B), “World View” by S.I.K., and “Brainwashed Society” by the Detrimentz. Interesting to note, Slugs was the band that Kirk Windstein and Todd Strange were in, before it turned into Crowbar.
In 1992, Soilent Green released a demo, though there is no official art or title for the project. An interesting note about this demo though, is that Donovan Punch had broken his arm the night before, at an Exhorder concert, and couldn’t play guitar. As such, he is only backing vocals. Pizzolato was friends with the guys, and he and his brother listened to a cassette that Punch brought of the recordings, so that they could record the guitar parts from him. This demo was to be released in 7” format by Relapse Records, but it never happened. Years later, the band ended up putting out a handful of releases on the label. This demo would be the last to feature Glenn Rambo, and as far as I know, might have been the last piece of music that he’d ever record.
I’m not sure why, or how, Glenn Rambo ended up leaving Soilent Green, but in 1993, he was replaced with Ben Falgoust. In an interview with Richard Metal Fan, in may of 2023, Ben stated that he’d help Soilent when they’d play shows in the Texas area. He said that there was some kind of situation with their singer at the time, and they parted ways; which later, Ben was offered to join the band.
But I’m not sure what that reason was, let alone what happened to Glenn after that. Between the years of 1992-2005, I have no idea what might have happened in his life, though it doesn’t seem like he created anything musically.
Tumblr media
On August 29th, 2005, Glenn passed away, having been found dead in his mother’s home. His ex-girlfriend Stacy, and some National Guardsmen went to his mother’s house, because they hadn’t heard from them since Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. The bodies of Glenn and his mother were still in the house. A friend named Melissa posted on the (now defunct, not archived site) nola underground:
“Glenn had a broken leg, and he and his Mom had no car to evacuate. If you know them, you probably know that his family didn’t have much money. I’m not sure where they are going to bury them, or if there are any next-of-kin that could help. Maybe we can all take up a collection to make sure that they are buried properly and have grave markers. I don’t even know how to go about doing something like that. It just makes me sad to think that after we have all lost so much, we are now finding out that we have lost good friends as well. Glenn was an important part of the NOLA scene, and a good friend to many of us. He will be dearly missed, and fondly remembered. -With Love and Sadness, Melissa October 2nd, 2005”
Glenn M. Rambo was buried at Saint Bernard Memorial Gardens, in Chalmette, Louisiana. He was 34.
His mother, Rebecca Anne Roark, was buried in the same location, she was 61 (June 8th, 1944-August 29, 2005). They were survived by family, as listed in their obituaries, which was published by the Time-Picayune, on January 3rd, 2006. Their funerals were on January 4th, 2006.
Glenn’s death was a shock to many, as there are still accounts online which have blogged, or commented about their sadness. One in particular is Paranoize, who was friends with Glenn, and played shows with him in the past.
Tumblr media
While Glenn may not have spent that much time on Earth, I believe that it is still important to acknowledge his influence on the music scene. Going through the history of Soilent Green, and the music before that point, it’s clear that his musical endeavors helped form the eventual NOLA sludge scene, which grew to prominence in the ‘90’s. My heart goes out to his friends and family. I can only pay my respects, and say thank you, for everything he made.
Thank you Glenn, may you rest in peace.

Ahhh squiggly! I just got a chance to read my request you fulfilled and I loved it so so much!!! And I’m extremely honored you enjoy my messages, I’m glad they make your day better! If Pokémon requests are still open, may I please request another one with Roark? I headcannon he gives really good bear hugs! 10/10 bodies the person (and tooootally dosent spin his s/o) and if it’s not a big deal, can you also do another x reader? But, if your Pokémon requests are full, no worries friend! Just ignore this request and have a lovely day! Thank you so so much!! -⚡️
Aww!!! That makes my heart happy! Thank you friend :) And gah, my heart is BLOOMING! Roark beloved- I always love writing for him! This is beyond precious! I've gotcha covered, friend! Have an amazing day aswell!
There was a lot of things you loved about Roark.
For one- he was an absolute dork about fossils and rocks. He could ramble for hours about the history of various prehistoric pokemon and their habits, forms, and the mythology associated with them. His excitement for said things was incredibly endearing, and he had a way to him that made even what seemed like the most boring aspects entertaining.
He was also incredibly supportive of you in all your plans and decisions. As long as you were doing it for you and weren’t putting yourself in harm's way, he was your number one cheerleader, encouraging you to take risks and being there for you if you stumbled.
Both in the metaphorical and literal sense. He’s a strong guy- there had been more than one occasion where he carried you home after you hurt or exhausted yourself.
All these are great, but by far your favorite part of Roark came in his hugs. There were two types when it came to the fossil loving redhead: the first was softer- a gentle squeeze when the day’s been long and you needed physical affection. They could last forever if you desired it.
The second was even better.
“ROARK! ROARK I GOT IN!” You all but screamed as you raced through Oreburgh, flying past trainers and workers alike. In your hand you were waving a piece of paper, the words “We welcome you to Naranja Academy” sprawled across the top. “THEY ACCEPTED ME!”
“They did?” Roark, who had come running at your screams, whooped in joy as he gathered you up in his arms, spinning you around as you laughed and laughed. “That’s my (Y/N)! I knew they'd accept you! I knew it!”
“I’m going to Paldea!” You cheered, hugging him just as tight as he let you down on your feet. Then the reality of what was happening kicked in, dampening your mood. “I’m leaving Sinoh..”
“Hey, hey- no tears.” Roark smiled as he reached up, brushing your cheek. “This is a good thing! You’ll finally get to travel like you’ve always wanted!” He pinched your cheek gently. “My dear (Y/N)’s gonna be famous! Don’t forget me when you're the new champion, okay?”
“Ugh, you’re annoying!” You laughed, shoving him lightly. “Really though- I won’t be home for a year. I’m gonna miss you.”
“I will, too.” Finally, a drop of sadness entered his voice, the two of you sharing the moment as the world went on. “But,” he shook himself out of it, smiling once more. “I’ll come visit! Once you're settled in, you can give me a tour of the region and introduce me to all your new friends.”
“Hm, we’ll see. I might be too famous by then.” Yout teased, laughing as he pulled you along, the two of you arm in arm as you walked back to your shared apartment. You were gonna miss him when you were gone. “Promise you’ll at least video call me?”
“Everyday.” He swore, raising a pinky finger.
You tucked yours around his, smiling.
Send me a headcanon and character(s) and I'll write a short 300-500 word dabble for it!

10 fandoms, 10 characters, 10 tags:
Basic rules: choose 10 fandoms that you are part of/support, and choose a favorite character from each of those. Then, tag ten folks!
Tagged by: @jigschosai @sealrock @reikatsukihana and @sasslett! Thank y'all :'D
This is not ordered by how much I'm into them, they're just in whatever order came to mind :) I will caution that I don't tend to choose favorite characters, I'm more of an OC maker. Feeling chatty, so I'm putting the actual list under a cut. You're welcome.
1. FFXIV : Pretty self-explanatory for the xiv sideblog. Since I'm not as in to the MSQ, I don't think I actually have a favorite character (which I know is illegal, I'm sorry :<). I really love seeing what the community does with the characters, though!
2. Halo : The storyline went to hell long ago, but I do still adore the original trilogy and constantly mine it for gpose captions. It was basically what I lived off of in high school. If I had a tumblr back then, I'd have been insufferable. Favorite character is easily Rtas 'Vadum.
3. WoW : Kind of. Asterisk. I really only know Classic, and even then, I'm way more Horde than I am Alliance. I have approximate knowledge of many things. No favorite there either - I'm all about the world and making OCs. We have two concurrent WoW tabletop games running at the moment, so this is where most of my headspace is. Their shared timeline is different from the canon, so I'm not really in the fandom per se.
4. Mass Effect : Alien dating sim, my beloved. I even enjoyed Andromeda (jump jets implemented perfectly, fun combat, the Jardaan reminded me of Forerunners). If you ask me to choose a favorite, I'll cry. How is a mother supposed to choose between her two sons (Legion and Grunt)? Drack also gets an honorary mention for his 100s of low res pictures of guns email.
5. Elder Scrolls : Mostly Skyrim, some Oblivion. I know, I'm one of those fans. Anyway, I've probably played over 1k hours of Skyrim by this point and yet. And yet! I don't have a favorite. The entirety of the Companions? I just wish that the faction questlines in Skyrim weren't "you killed 3 wolves and have been here a week. You lead us all now", but it does give me good scaffolding which. As an OC fiend. Grabby hands.
6. The World Ends With You : This game made me good at calculus in high school. My favorite character from here is Sho Minamimoto, and I was a completely normal teenager who dealt with that by doing calculus problems for fun. Turns out, the trick to get good at math is repetition.
7. Pokémon : Probably my earliest fandom. Still play the games now and again, just got Legends Arceus (super late, I know), and that's been a lot of fun. My favorite character from the franchise is Sinnoh's Rock type leader, Roark. I had a long-running sideblog dedicated to the Sinnoh region because gen IV is my favorite in general! It's inactive at the moment.
8. Guild Wars : 2, to be more precise. I started playing about a month after release, and since it's f2p, I still drop in from time to time. Like every MMO, I have no favorites. I really love playing Sylvari, though! (The glow!! The nightmare!! The [[Heart of Thorns spoiler!!]] They're just so neat)
9. Star Trek : we're now getting into "shows I watched and didn't hate" because I'm definitely not in the 'fandom' for Trek. We've been going through the old series as a way to wind down before bed, starting with TNG. We're on Enterprise now, and I'm sad that it got canceled. Still will probably have a better ending than Voyager. I don't have a favorite, but I can tell you that the writers' collective favorite must be either Seven of Nine or Data.
10. Uh. Various anime? I can't say I've recently loved any particular series to the point of fandom, but as a whole, I've been a weeb since I was in middle school. "Recent" series that I've enjoyed have included Mob Psycho and Love is War. Coincidentally, they both saved the most banger opening for their third season.
We had to stretch a little bit, but we made it to ten! Proud of this community (this community is my brain desperately trying to remember 10 things I like)
Have no idea who's been tagged in this, so if you've done this, please ignore! Or reblog it again!
@miqojak @airis-ray @wilanserulia @ahollowgrave @blackestnight @starstrider @iron-sparrow @sumifinalfourteen @jump-n-dive @otherworldseekers

@electrivolt said: "What... what's a lantern rite?"
The question is immediate the moment they return home, little ball of fur just a little reluctantly slipping out of his cozy spot between layers of fabric and instead opting to allow the fox to take a seat right on top of the table, tails swishing and legs crossed as he watches his human put aside the recent purchases. ( and waiting for his fish, too. roark better not forget that. )
"And why are so many people talking about it? Is it important? They sounded happy about it. And rushing. Do we have to do something too?" Has Roark forgotten to mention something to him again? He better explain now, his fox needs to know everything. / the gays go to a lantern rite p1. | accepting.
Tumblr media
"Ah? Oh, right, I guess you would've never seen the rite from the outskirts beyond the mountain pass, huh," Roark pauses halfway between putting their basket of food for the week on a low counter, having let his small furball wiggle out from the depths of his jacket and onto the table. The market streets were bustling with crafts and materials, brightly colored lanterns strewn en masse and stalls being set up along the docks. Roark knew immediately by sheer habit, but this would have been Volkner's first, right? If Inazuma had anything similar, there was a good chance the kitsune was already ushered into hiding by then.
Well, then it's settled—he has to introduce him the right way. "It's a yearly celebration to bring in the new year. All the lantern material you see that's everywhere is so everyone can carve a wish into plaustrite, light a lantern with that wish, honor fallen heroes, and let go so it floats away." He continues while he organizes their plethora of meats and vegetables, sprinkling dash of salt on some of the cuts he's elected to be good for a curry and rice some time during the week. It's all fluid muscle memory. "When everyone releases them around the same time, the lanterns are like stars all grouped together—people come from all over to do this one thing together, guiding the honored home. It's really fun, and there's so much good food during the festival—" He whirls around, bounding over to the kitsune and taking his hands into his own, squeezing them and swinging them side to side, abandoning his beloved's tuna in his excitement. "And then—and then, there's the big mingxiao lantern that's built by everyone in Liyue and it's freaking huge and amazing and it's usually an adeptus but like! Watching it lift into the air after so much plaustrite! With the fireworks! Have you seen fireworks before, Volk?! They're so fun and colorful and loud and they explode into shapes now—it's so fun! Let's go and make our wishes together!"
Volkner can't say no to this adorable face, could he? ( not that roark was trying to convince him ) He only abruptly lets go to get back to the fresh slab of tuna that said kitsune had so politely ( read: kept pressing his cold snout into his chest ) reminded him to bring on the way home, separating food groups into their appropriate containers and placing them neatly into the icebox for later. Once Roark starts prepping the cutting board and his filet knife, Volkner will have his tuna in hand soon enough. That is, if he manages to get Roark to shut up.
"So you know those floaty rocks I've been coming home with recently? Those are the plaustrites! Civil Affairs usually asks for some level of procurement so they can guarantee enough people can engrave their wish, so needless to say, I like to do my part to help out with the lanterns. They allow the lantern to float away—I'll show you how it does it when I drop off this batch. Everyone that can do something usually does, whether it's gathering, or cooking, or even building the fireworks you'll see around. All if it is just for the celebration and charity in the end." With how happily he spoke about it, maybe it was an important tradition to him, one that he wanted to share with Volkner, now that he was here. “Everything is so delicious and vibrant along the docks, I have to show you everything there is to offer, if you’d have me! We can even make it a date and dress up nice, if that sounds fun to you, yeah?”
It’s a miracle that he doesn’t manage to cut his fingers while he’s babbling excitedly, soon taking out a small dish to serve the freshest slices of tuna for the week for the fox in question, making sure there were no surprises of the parasitic variety, and upon finishing his examination, he comes back to Volkner to offer him his food. “So, you up for it?”

The Lodger and "Yours Truly, Jack the Ripper"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The middle film of a trio of Gothic horrors John Brahm directed for 20th Century-Fox in the 1940s, THE LODGER (1944, YouTube) improves on the first, THE UNDYING MONSTER (1942), but can’t hold a candle to the third, HANGOVER SQUARE (1945). Brahm and cinematographer Lucien Ballard copy some compositions from Fritz Lang’s great M (1932) with good reason. Both films are about the effect of s serial killer’s rampage on the city he ravages. Where the Lang focused on a child killer (Peter Lorre) whose compulsions are part of the film’s despondent world view, however, Brahm’s picture seeks to explain away Jack the Ripper (Laird Cregar) by having him kill former actresses because his beloved brother drank himself to death after an actress betrayed him. That’s all too pat to be believable in any but Hollywood terms, which manages to diminish the horror while also suggesting repressed homosexuality as the killer’s deeper motive. Which angers him more — that his brother died or that his brother preferred the actress’ company to his? Cregar is very good as the killer, wisely underplaying a lot of his early scenes, and Brahm shoots him to great effect. He looms over the other actors. Ballard fills the screen with shadows that heighten the sense of ambiguity about his character. And there are two good performances from Sara Allgood and Cedric Hardwicke as the couple renting rooms to Cregar. The real problem here is the casting of Merle Oberon as their niece, a music hall star who captures his fancy and incites his ire. She’s a competent actress and can be quite good in the right material. But her two musical numbers (dubbed) are limp noodles. She doesn’t have a dancer’s grace. It’s obvious the chorus girls are doing all the heavy lifting in what amounts to Mae West choreography (they dance, she moves in front of them), and her most strenuous moves are done in long shot and look doubled. Nor does she have the kind of charisma to suggest she could have been a musical star. Hell, she couldn’t even open for Luise Rainer in THE GREAT ZIEGFELD (1936).
My friend and I followed this with an appropriate THRILLER episode, “Yours Truly, Jack the Ripper” (1961, YouTube), well-directed by Ray Milland from a script by Barre Lyndon, who also adapted THE LODGER, this time drawing on a Robert Bloch story. Here Jack is haunting a modern American city, performing ritual murders to keep himself young. The focus is on British expert John Williams, who’s been tracking Jack’s Satanic murders for 30 years, but the real fun is in the supporting cast. Gloria Blondell (Joan’s sister) is a victim’s neighbor more concerned about the newspapers’ getting her name right than with her friend’s demise (sounds like a Wits End Players sketch), while Adam Roarke and Ottola Nesmith play eccentric artists in a salon run by police psychiatrist Donald Woods. The piece has some ridiculous moments, with Williams’ cigarette standing at attention as he watches stripper Beverly Hills, but it also has a great early score by Jerry Goldsmith.

Gary Cooper in The Fountainhead (King Vidor, 1949) Cast: Gary Cooper, Patricia Neal, Raymond Massey, Robert Douglas, Kent Smith, Henry Hull, Ray Collins. Screenplay: Ayn Rand, based on her novel. Cinematography: Robert Burks. Art direction: Edward Carrere. Music: Max Steiner. Ayn Rand, proponent of a "philosophy" beloved of 20-year-old frat-boy business majors, is still very much with us, as the would-be Randian Übermensch who recently inhabited the White House too well demonstrates. So it's probably worth brushing up on the ideas that seem to captivate perpetual adolescents and sociopaths. Fortunately, you don't have to slog through her doorstop novels to get the gist: All you have to do is watch The Fountainhead, for which she wrote the screenplay. Its sociopath hero, Howard Roark, would be intolerable if he weren't played by Gary Cooper, taking on a role that is a curious inversion of the "common man" he played for Frank Capra in Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936) or the pawn of the Establishment in Meet John Doe (1941). Cooper's occasional eye twinkles or wry smiles help keep us from believing that he's really the kind of arrogant shit who says things like "I don't give or ask for help" or "The world is perishing from an orgy of self-sacrificing." As Dominique Francon, Patricia Neal does a lot of seething and surging about; it's not a good performance by a long shot, but it's watchable. But Raymond Massey manages to give an almost good performance, even when forced to deliver lines like: "What I want to find in our marriage will remain my own concern. I exact no promises and impose no obligations. Incidentally, since it is of no importance to you, I love you." Was ever woman in this humor wooed? The real saving grace of The Fountainhead, however, is its director, King Vidor, whose career began and flourished in the silent era, with classics like The Big Parade (1925) and The Crowd (1928), which honed his visual sense before he had to work with dialogue. If The Fountainhead had been a silent movie, not cluttered with Rand's dialogue and sermonizing, it might have been a classic itself, especially since it had a first-rate cinematographer in Robert Burks and a clever set designer in Edward Carrere. Max Steiner's overbearing score also helps distract us from the clanking and clattering of Rand's screenplay. The Fountainhead, in short, is a hoot, but a perversely fascinating one.
