Something interesting I found while playing Overwatch.

So I was playing Overwatch, CRAZY i know, Overwatch. ANYWAYS, i was looking at some of zenyattas skins and then I realized one of the skins was called Sanzang.

It a took a minute, then it clicked in my brain, ITS A REFERENCE TO THE GREAT MONK TANG SANZANG. So obviously I went to go see if there was more like this skin.

Then I realized, I bought a Roadhog skin a few months back called Bajie.. Bajie? The guy from jttw? ROADHOG IS BAJIE, so I got even more excited then before and went on a HUNT to see if there was more references to JTTW lying within.

While looking, I remember that mei had a few new year's skins. So obviously I went to go look, and I saw that one of her skins was Chang'e The moon goddess. Now obviously, I think of Chang'e from LMK because its the only fictional character I know that has that name as well.

Then I clicked on Reinhardt and at first I was sure if what I was looking at was reference to JTTW, So I did some research and found that what I was looking at was infact Sha wujing, a disciple of The Great Monk Tang sanzang.

Now, all I need to find was sun wukong the great sage equal to heaven... It took me so long to put the pieces together, but then I remember that Genji was a disciple of Zenyatta in the overwatch lore. So I quickly ran over to find genji's Icon and there it was. He has a skin called, Divine monkey. NOW OBVIOUSLY this might not be Sun wukong BUT ITS PRETTY DAMN CLOSE.

Anyways, Enough of my yapping. I just wanted to share something that I thought was cool.

OK I think! Those are my answers...!! idk a lot of these were just first impressions & for a lot of the ones I didn't put here I like elements of the design but not the whole thing... but yeah.

redrawing roadhog as zhu bajie is such a fun choice especially since he has a zbj skin.. though it makes me wonder how swk would react to overwatch casting a gorilla as him lol 😂

Honestly Roadhog does have a great height to fat to muscle ratio, which means his physique is one I think would generally really suit everyone's favorite pig man Zhu Bajie given that he does eat a lot and is also very strong! And on a personal note I'd like to see more ZBJ designs out there that are more intimidating if still somewhat cartoony than the standard fare, so a Roadhog-esque build would be a good place to start with that!

Haha! Oh yeah, the Sun Wukong Winston skin is pretty great. And honestly if anything I could see the real Monkey King finding that pretty funny, starting with the fact that he's a monkey, not an ape. But I think it can be appreciated that Winston is quite the intelligent primate himself, so I wouldn't be surprised if there was appreciation for the link made in that regard. As is most western representations of our fellow primates--including most western representations of Sun Wukong--still go towards presenting them as some combination of silly and destructive; more ennobling features for primates in western stories are a really recent phenomena. Winston is a breath of fresh air in that regard!

base is best when it comes to being my dreamy wife. but i do really like Bajie

all his skins have things i like and things i dislike though. not fond of the general aesthetic of his pirate ones (they look really plasticy and unnappealing to me like a cheap halloween costume. tacky) but his Titty Scars do something to me. i like the concept of his halloween skin soooooooooo much but some of the minor details grind my gears enough that i dont like it. the robot one is so cute but its not my wife. also i dont think that blue/green palette works its kind of yucky. ice fisherman is adorable but i dont like when i cant see him. toxic/noxious are REALLY cool but again i go :( wheres my wife. butcher is hot but i dont lnow anything about diablo. they described him as having that good stank during halloween this year though 😵‍💫😫🥴. those are basically all the ones i have positive things to say about

Ahhh these have been collecting dust in my inbox and the Gency tag could use some love. Here’s some short Lunar New Year stuff! Happy Year of the Rat!

The restaurant was decked out in scarlet and gold, and rich, salty scents thickened the air. The final dumpling sat in its bamboo steamer in its perfectly round, creamy white defiance. Both Mercy and Genji stared at it, completely stuffed and utterly defeated. 

“…all yours,” said Genji.

“Oh–no–I insist,” said Mercy.

“You can medically attest to the fact that my digestive system has much less capacity than your average human’s,” said Genji.

“I can also attest to the fact that your prosthetics make your metabolism burn faster, so you can definitely handle one last dumpling.”

“Ah, but you need to keep up your strength for the valkyrie suit–”

“But I also need to maintain my weight for the valkyrie suit—”

“Ridiculous. Your metabolism is fine. You can handle it.”

“Oh no, this is very rich in fat--”

“I will die if I eat that dumpling,” said Genji. 

“You’re being overdramatic–Pork!” said Mercy, “That is a pork dumpling and you know I don’t eat pork–”

“It’s one of the chicken dumplings and you know it,” said Genji.

“I mean we could just leave it,” said Mercy, “It’s just one dumpling.”

“But it’s the last dumpling,” said Genji, folding his arms, “Can we truly say we are Overwatch agents if we can stand up to Talon, but not to a single dumpling?”

“Arw gaw ih!” A voice came from below the table. Both Genji and Mercy flinched back as a grubby metal arm came up and slammed on the edge of the table. Genji took ahold on the table and stabilized it as Junkrat hoisted himself up on the edge of the table. His face was completely and horrifically stuffed with dumplings, “Lerrwhe haaw ih.”

“…how did you get here?” said Mercy, a bit disturbed.

“He’s with me,” a clearly stuffed and exhausted Roadhog in a Bajie mask hoisted Junkrat up in one arm, prompting a weak ‘Oi’ out of him, “He loses inhibitions when he’s got too much food in him.”

“Girrwhe a duhlih..” Junkrat weakly stretched his arms toward the dumpling.

“Let’s go,” said Roadhog, turning around, prompting a whine out of Junkrat. A soggy half-chewed dumpling fell out of Junkrat with the motion and both Mercy and Genji flinched back at it. They both watched as Roadhog headed out with Junkrat under his arm in silence.

“We don’t need to finish the last dumpling,” said Genji, after Roadhog finally walked out of earshot.

“No, we don’t,” said Mercy.

A long pause passed between them.

“But it is this last dumpling, though,” said Mercy.

“It is, and it will haunt me forever if it goes uneaten,” said Genji.

“…we could split it,” said Mercy after a few beats.

“We could split it,” said Genji, the lights on his shoulders glowing with realization. He moved to divide the dumpling in half with his chopsticks but Mercy had already managed to pluck it up and hold it between them. 

“On three–” said Mercy.

“Oh–” said Genji, setting his own chopsticks down.

“One, two,–” Mercy counted and they both took large bites out of opposite ends of the dumpling, their lips barely brushing against each other in the middle and leaving a small mess of cabbage ribbons between Mercy’s chopsticks in the middle.

“…Not as neat as Lady and the Tramp, is it?” said Genji, dumpling contents in one cheek.

Mercy snorted and tried not to choke on the last of her dumpling.

SAME wkngkwkgnka like i was in the overwatch fandom for a bit when i started playing but i left shortly after cuz of weird/crazy cishets. It was toxic as well and i wouldnt be surprised if it still is lol. Cishets more like SUShets am i right

I started playing in 2017 too i think, around the winter wonderland event. At least that is the earliest event i can recall playing lol. I started off maining Genji and Reaper. In like my first year of overwatch i refused to play tank lol. And i have mained Mercy since the very beginning.

What's your favorite overwatch event or skins?

Oooo I’m legally obligated (/j) to say Archives and Anniversary, for Archives it’s solely because I’m a <insert slur> for story modes in games, and for Anniv it’s. Everything really 🥴

On skins I (of course) love all of the Archives skins, but besides that I’m in love with Bedouin Pharah, Bajie Roadhog, Sanzang Zen, Formal Doom, Oasis Symmetra and Talon Sigma

Overwatch AU

Remember that time Overwatch had Journey to the West skins? Now, Imagine child versions of the JttW characters being raised/looked after by the Overwatch characters who had the respective skins.

Wukong with dad Winston and his cool aunt Tracer.

Sanzang and his dads Zenyatta and Genji. Like, you can't tell me Genji wouldn't also adopt this child.

Roadhog is a chill dad to Bajie, but Junkrat is too chaotic of a brother/uncle/dad.

I'd imagine Reinhardt just kinda found Wujing on his travels, and now nothing he does gets the kid to stay away, so might as well keep him around.

Now, I don't think there was a skin for Longma. Sure, he could be left out of this AU, but he's forgotten enough as it is.

Clearly, the only solution is that Sanzang is distantly related to the Shimadas and can summon his own mini dragon.
