Rock’n’Roll Virginia Beach Course Preview
You will see Hugh Mongous just before Mile 5.
The combination of heat and humidity is my largest achilles heel as a runner. My legs turn into concrete and the body produces sweat at an embarrassingly high rate. As a result, my course preview run here was brutal. Even still, the Rock’n’Roll Virginia Beach Half-Marathon course was a pleasant surprise in terms of scenery. Here are the takeaways:
1) It will most likely be hot and humid. Consider taking your pace down 10-15 seconds per mile for the first 3-5 miles.
2) Shortly after Mile 1 you make a sharp turn onto 29th street and it would appear that you’re about to run up to the beach and its boardwalk. You would be wrong. You turn right onto Atlantic Ave. If you’re anything like me you may think, “What the? I came here to run ON the beach, not next to the beach where I can’t see it.” So I decided to cheat a bit and cut up to the boardwalk to run parallel to the course. It only took me 3 blocks to realize why this was a huge mistake. The sun hit me like a punch in the gut and took the life out of my legs. I retreated back to Atlantic Avenue and realized why having the course run on the street as opposed to the Boardwalk may have been the best decision ever by Rock’n’Roll: it felt at least 10 degrees cooler as the sun was blocked by the plethora of hotels that aligned the street.
3) Atlantic Avenue is a 1.5 mile stretch that seems to be stuck in the year1950, with the exception of a huge, out-of-place Walgreens. And, sorry, but you’d have to pay me to ride the ferris wheel at the VB Amusement Park. (I’m not so good with heights, especially heights that were manmade a LONG time ago.)
4) Your first “hill” is after the 5k mark as you go up a small bridge which takes you over a scenic inlet. It’s not a hill. It’s a bump.
5) Your next NINE miles SHOULD be in the shade as you’re blocked by tree-lined streets. (Mile 7- 8 is particularly gorgeous.
6) If you’re the type of runner who likes to take pictures while you race, one of your best shots will be on your right at mile 4.7. Hugh Mongous is, apparently,a staple here in Virginia Beach (see picture above). It’s actually the 2nd Hugh; the original “suffered third degree burns in 1989″ according to his website.
7) Miles 8-10 as they are on a military base and if you listen real closely, you may just hear someone yelling at you to drop and give them push-ups. Or maybe it’s just the voices in your head.
8) The second and last bump is at mile 11.5 as you go back over the bridge you climbed earlier. The sun will be saying hi to you around this point in the race. If you played it safe and respected the heat, hopefully you can say hi back to the sun. If not, I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re muttering some expletives right about now.
9) The homestretch is wonderful along the boardwalk. Consider running through the finish line and straight into the ocean to cool yourself down.
There you have it. Enjoy the beach and the party. From what I’m told, Labor Day Weekend in Virginia Beach used to be full of college kids. Then runners took over and the college partiers were like, “Ummm, lets NOT be surrounded by a bunch of people who want to be healthy.”

I haven't run since Sunday at #rnrVb I promise I won't 😭 cry,... It was truly a roller coaster weekend of emotions. I loved having my whole family there to cheer me on (even though Peyton did not appreciate the early morning wake up call.) long story short,.. I ran a comfortable 5k,.. a comfortably fast 1 mile in the sand and I injured the hamstring 5 miles into the half marathon on Sunday. So, I've been doing nothing for a few days but foam rolling, stretching and yoga. This might become an extended rest. I Will be ready for the next race if Irma doesn't mess things up in #philadelphia #rnrphilly #blackmenrun #raleigh #running #runnerscommunity

It may sound crazy to run three races in one weekend, but to someone who likes relay races, three times seems completely normal. I’d venture to say that running a 5K, a mile on the sand, and then a half marathon is probably going to be easier than any relay I’ve ever run anyways. I’m still however taking it seriously and have come up with a things-don’t-usually-go-as-planned-game-plan. Depending…

The Rock N Roll marathon series "Gold Record" medal. To earn this medal, you need to run 10 @runrocknroll races (half or full) within a calendar year. As someone who's DJ'd for over 15 years (not so much anymore though) I knew I had to get it. This medal is much more than just a piece of metal attached to a ribbon... This was THE GOAL set earlier this year. This is 10+ races all over the US. This is seeing cities and places I've never seen before. This is meeting amazing, inspiring new friends/runners. This is challenging myself and completing that challenge. This is even finding love on the run. Receiving this medal in Vegas could not have been any more symbolic as Vegas is my second home town, a city where I used to DJ, and the first race of 10 had me cutting out of a friend's wedding reception in Vegas early to run a race in another state and fly back the same day. #runrocknroll #tourpass #heavymedals #questfor10 #rnrsf #rnrsd #rnrsea #rnrchi #rnrvb #rnrsj #rnrbrooklyn #rnrden #rnrla #rnrphilly #rnrlv #medalwhore #bling #nuunbassador #running #travel #lasvegas #maurrunning (at Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon & 1/2 Marathon)

Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon World Tour Stop 5: Virginia Beach, Virginia. Stop number 5 brought me to Mom and Dad’s neck of the woods! I some how convinced my little sister and parents to partake in this running business! The first day we did a mile in the sand along the Atlantic Ocean. It was tough, I won’t lie to you. My Mom was definitely not feeling it. The next day Kate and I geared up for our half and my family set off to do their 5K. The race was humid and felt longer than the others….but the support on the course was second to none. They really kept me going. My family was waiting for me at the finish line, which is something I’ve never had before. I hadn’t realized how lovely it was to have people who loved you screaming your name at the end of the race! I’ll never forget this race. It’s definitely secure in my memory bank. And after all this running and medal business, my family caught the bug. They’ve already signed up for their second 5K! 5/10
Stop Number 5 Virginia Beach, Virginia September 5-7, 2015

"In running, it doesn't matter whether you come in first, in the middle of the pack, or last. You can say, 'I have finished.' There is a lot of satisfaction in that." – Fred Lebow Celebrating @runrocknroll sweet 15 years of running in Virginia Beach by running another half mary with family and friends 💛 Till next year #rnrvb (at Rock 'n' Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon)
