back at it again with another eval post! for july evals, daniel will be doing complete by onf. unlike usual for daniel, we’re going to do the whole shebang this time, dancing included! as always, both guys and gals are welcome, we can change up the lyrics as much as anyone would like, and if this flops i’ll toss daniel into one of y’all’s groups instead (or i may anyway, summer performances are fun.) without further ado!!

it’s a cruel summer,

she eyes the pool disdainfully, nose upturned, and lips pulled low in what is starting to appear as a permanent frown. it can be said that summer is not her favorite season of the year. the constant sweating even when you’re just casually standing and the humid air makes it too uncomfortable for her to enjoy. the only consolation to this godforsaken two long months would be the fashion. the dresses are cute but then again, that’s just it. 

“how long are we supposed to stay in this party?” she asks her friend as they manoeuvre around the space, trying not to get their clothes wet. they performed nearly a half hour ago and she had assumed they would be free to leave. the glare she had received from one of their coaches when she was inching her way towards the exit made it perfectly clear that she can’t just leave that easily. “i’m getting old for these type of occasions.” 

taking a sip from her glass of fruit punch, she sighs in disappointment. “this punch isn’t even spiked. how am i supposed to pretend that i’m enjoying this?” she should be grateful. this event seemed like a perfectly good idea to relax after a whirlwind of performances. but truthfully, she would rather just stay home. nothing beats getting food delivery for dinner, a cup of tea, and laying down on the soft cushion of her bed after a tiresome work day. “what do you think we can do in the meantime?”

jibeom can’t stop the grin from forming on his face when he’s standing in the same practice room as changbin. “this is like... the first evaluation we’re doing together since we both became trainees!” wrapping his arms around his friend, he buried his face into changbin’s shoulder. “hmm, even though we live together, we never see each other anymore...” jibeom’s voice is slightly muffled by the other’s shirt but it’s obvious to tell how much he’s pouting after missing his friend. 

“oh but i can’t wait to hear you rap in person, binnie.” it’s true, after all. jibeom doesn’t think he’s really heard the other rap in person before either aside from like bits here and there that he vaguely recalls from the mgas. other than that, it’s just not the same as hearing it for himself. “can’t wait to wow you with my amazing vocals this time~”

200731 |   he hadn’t planned to stay long, necessarily, because their manager recommended against it and comeback preparations are in full swing. but jinwook thrives in the summer heat, so he never really stood a chance. he’s surrounded by fun performances, familiar shouting from the pool, and old and new friends alike. by now the sun has long passed the high point in the sky. he checks his phone as he heads to the restroom, wanting to wash some sticky spilled punch from his hands, and sees how many hours have passed already without him realizing. it’s the most relaxed he’s felt in days or weeks though, and in the moment he thinks it’s worth the reprimands that might be waiting at the dorm tonight.

there’s a little smile sitting on his face, the epitome of zen, until he opens the bathroom door and trips on the body crouched just inside of it. “oh, i’m so sorry—!” he says immediately, hopping on one foot to catch his balance. “i wasn’t paying attention... are you okay?” mortified, jinwook turns around and thinks he recognizes the young man bent down. it’s park jihoon, baekhyun’s groupmate. jinwook might’ve met him once, on animal crossing, but he’s not sure. in-person meetings always stick better in his memory.

after one more second, jinwook realizes jihoon was down there fixing his insoles, so he quickly glances away. that sort of thing is between a man and his own shoes. not that jinwook would know. he steps to the sink and turns on the tap, running his hands under cool water. “i’m not sure if we met officially,” he says as he smiles through the mirror reflection. “i’m jinwook.”

there’s a vague memory at the back of his mind of another time they’d been given a chance like this, to relax and just have fun. there had been water involved back then too, along with a feeling of lightheadedness and a shortness of breath associated with trying to blow up a huge floating device without proper equipment. he’s learned since then, and this time brought along air pump to aid in the process. things went much more smoothly then, and the inflatable unicorn had been filled with air in no time, and it’s a bit bigger than he’d expected. he hopes none of the other people in the pool mind it when he places it in, positioning it so that he can get on.

“hey, check out my new ride,” he says to minho with a grin, using one hand to keep it steady and the other to gesture toward it. his concentration is then spent elsewhere, trying to board the inflatable object, but finding it more difficult than he’d anticipated. after a few mere moments of trying to think it over, he does what he does best and just goes for it, hopping off the concrete around the deep end of the pool and onto the flat surface of the unicorn’s base.

bad idea, as it turns out. as soon as he lands, the inflatable unicorn flips, sending him into the depths of the chlorinated water, sending the both of them upside down as he makes a grab for the unicorns neck. still, he’s laughing once he emerges from the water, immediately splashing water toward minho as he does. “don’t laugh,” he warns, even as he continues to do so himself. “it’s a learning process.”

Summer has just begun and it’s time to cool down!

When the temperature heats up, it means that music show’s stages and music videos get more colorful and the new releases gain lively beats, helping to create the perfect mood for long awaited vacation trips or sunny days on the beach.  While a summer break is something trainees can only dream of as they continue to practice day and night, they can still get a glimpse of it with the next evaluation. 

Before the theme of this month’s performances is revealed, coaches inform that they should pack some sunscreen, floats and water guns, but since rewards only come after blood, sweat and tears, they are told to prepare a stage with feel-good, upbeat tunes that makes everyone get up and dance along. Whether it’s a dance stage (choreographed by the group), a vocal one or a combination of both, the key is pumping up the small audience of coaches. 

However, instead of the usual practice rooms and auditoriums, this month the performances will take place in the rooftop swimming pool of a hotel in the heart of Seoul on July 31st. A small stage by the pool will be set for this and, after all performances are concluded, trainees are allowed to enjoy a party to celebrate the new season and their hard work. For those who are not fans of swimming, ball pits, ice cream, snacks and fruit punch stations will be also offered and a DJ will take over the stage to play the hottest hits.  

The day starts with regular training and trainees will be taken from their companies to the hotel after lunch. Performances will start as soon as they all arrive and they are free to enjoy the rest of the day until 12 am. Despite the more relaxed environment, they are expected to be on their best behaviour as the coaches will be around all the time and anything that stains their reputation or the company’s image won’t be tolerated.

Though he’d never actually say it out loud, Moonbok had ended up having some misgivings about practically forcing Youngjae into first going to the Starbright Auditions, and then to the subsequent TRC audition. He hadn’t thought ahead to what the consequences of a potential rejection might have done for his friend’s mental health.

Thankfully, Tiger JK proved that he could spot the talent in other and had signed Youngjae. Which now meant that Moonbok could be unashamedly big-headed about the whole thing.

“What did I tell you? Hm~? What did I say? Didn’t I tell you you’d succeed?” smirking at the younger boy as they take a break in their evaluation practice (the companies were certainly throwing the new trainees straight into the deep end). Moobok flipped his hair out of his eyes.

“No need to thank me, either. Though if you want to shower me with graditude, I won’t refuse either~”

what’s it like being in an evaluation group with people who are far more talented than you? serim can tell you that it’s not as bad one might think. or maybe it’s because he doesn’t care if they know his dancing and singing aren’t anywhere near mind-blowing. he’s got two things going for him: his looks and his charisma. he doesn’t need anything else. 

still, he’s incredibly thankful to daniel for even letting him join the group in the first place. they’ve all be helpful with the practice and learning lyrics and choreography. if anything, he’d be way worse if it wasn’t for them. now he can actually sing. 

he also finds it comforting to be in a group with people he already knows like beomgyu from high school or mina whom they’ve exchanged flyers before and both of which he knows are connected with soobin so he knows he can get along with them. 

when d-day comes, serim’s busy fixing himself with a small compact mirror. by the time their turn arrives, serim has hyped himself up to the point where he actually thinks he’s hot shit but that’s nothing new. they get themselves into their positions and the song starts. 

truth be told, serim feels an instant energy boost from the song. dare he say that performing was fun and to be here in front of an actual audience (mainly just all the trainers and other trainees) but it was still something new to him and he liked new things the most. 

taking on u’s parts wasn’t difficult. his lines were easy enough considering that during them, he wasn’t dancing so he’d be able to sing without sounding like a beached whale. then when he’s not singing, he could focus on the dancing which needed a lot of his attention. like true park serim fashion, he thinks he has his facial expressions down pat too looking every bit of cute and bubbly and charismatic

and if complete ends up in his spotify liked songs, serim mentions it to nobody. after all, he doesn’t really like idols, doesn’t he? the song ends before he knows it and he’s breathing hard after their stage. he knows what he needs to work on but for the most part, everything was perfect to him. and he really hates how much he enjoyed it, too. too bad he’s not ready to talk about that yet.

Choi Beomgyu was excited. Perhaps excited was an understatement. This was not only his first evaluation since becoming a trainee, but it was also a big event. This month’s evaluation was part of a summer party and Beomgyu was probably more excited for the party itself more than anything. He loved social gatherings and this gathering sounded like a big one.

He was ready for it.

Beomgyu knew only two people from his group; Serim and Mina. Serim was Soobin’s best friend and Soobin was Beomgyu’s childhood friend. Plus they attended the same school. Mina he had seen hanging around with Soobin before. Now he had a chance to get to know them better and Beomgyu was excited. Anyone who knew Soobin was cool in his books.

Being a trainee was nothing like he had imagined. He had pictured something completely different. Being a trainee was definitely much harder than he anticipated. Couple that with the fact that he’s a high school student and Beomgyu had very little time to socialise and spend doing things he loved. All his time was now taken by studying or training and Beomgyu longed for some free time, even if just to dance. His participation with INBEAT had been severely reduced and he missed his second family.

Arriving at the location, Beomgyu could sense the party vibes even from outside. He was anxious to attend the party and meet his favourite idols but first he had to perform. Thankfully, he had members of his group who were experienced with evaluations and had provided him with tips and advice to help him. They had rehearsed like crazy and the song they chose was fun to perform.

He took some time to himself while waiting so he could focus and run over the lyrics and choreography. He ignored the nerves that came out of nowhere and took some deep breaths. The realisation that this was his first evaluation since signing with TRC hit him suddenly and Beomgyu had to wipe the sweat that was forming on his forehead. When their group was called, Beomgyu had to force his feet to move.

Standing on the stage in front of the few judges was more nerve-wracking and worse than standing in the streets of Hongdae while performing surrounded by strangers. There was no turning back now and he needed to focus on the performance. Beomgyu was a dancer and he could not mess this up.

The dance was large and the moves quick and energetic. He was thankful that  he only had a few lines this performance since it meant he could focus on dancing which was his forte. As soon as the music began, Beomgyu became the focused and talented dancer he was whenever he performed.

he isn’t too sure of how he got one on his own. in passing makes sense but you’d think he’d remember when someone handed him a lei. did he accept one earlier? did he take it from chanyeol who got it somehow? yeah, that seems most likely to be honest. either way, the colorful flowers of the lei are more realistic than the ones he used to see as a kid. looks fancier too and odds are he shouldn’t just randomly have it. hell, he wonders if someone brought it in particular for someone else. 

if he could, he would’ve done that for naeun but distance is needed and he can’t risk it as much as he did before, not when he got tied to a royal girl before and it hits a little too close to home. 

debating looking for chanyeol again, which wouldn’t be hard considering he’s got ‘bruce,’ minho changes his mind once he spots yeji, walking up to her with a wave in greeting. “hey! so, i’ve given you flowers before but... want this lei? i think it’d look much better on you.”

it was just a small stage, set by the pool, but the view from the rooftop of the hotel in the heart of seoul was simply breathtaking and by far one of his favorites from all the stages they got to stand on until now. the little crowd consisting of trainees, staff members and coaches and the scenery gave off a vibe that reminded him of summer festivals, so he was spontaneously stroke by an idea for his upcoming performance. luckily, the coaches had allowed him to perform one of his own songs, as long as it fitted the theme of the evaluation. so he was even more motivated to take over the entire stage and get the party rolling.

shortly before he was told to stand on stage, he approached his friends and asked them to splash him with water, soaking his outfit, a white t-shirt and black ripped jeans, to sport a wet-shirt look cause summer was all about beach bodies and appeal, right? the rapper had discarded his initial idea of being shot with waterguns, while being on stage like at waterbomb festivals, but as it appeared him too risky for those who might wanted to do a dance performance after, he went with this instead.

his chosen song was actually a very vocal one, though the range wasn't too hard, people would probably wonder why a rapper like gray would like to sing instead of rap. in his eyes though, this song was just ideal to heat up his fellow trainees. as the past months had been quite hard on everyone, gray wanted to have fun for once, instead of competing with others.

he was called to the stage and with ease he leaped onto it, starting to bop his head immediately as soon as the music roared from the speakers. now the thing was he had produced two versions of the song, and the version he was about to perform was the remix version that also had a female part. instead of looking for a female trainee who would take over the part that was originally sung by sooyong, he had decided to sing the solo version while using the remix version as instrumental. like that the summer vibes wouldn't get lost.

walking down the stage, he began to adlib, looking down the stage as his eyes searched for his friends cheering for him, while he pointed at them. when the intro transitioned into his waterdrop trademark, he whispered his artistname into the microphone, before the actual song began. gray stopped in the center of the stage closing his eyes, when his voice filled the space around him, his mind with the girl he had recorded this remix version with. it still felt like a dream to him, how well the lyrics could be applied on the two of them now.

the male lifted his arms, throwing his hand up and down, while animating the onlookers to enjoy the rhythm and let their bodies rock to the music. dark orbs looked into the little crowed to his feet, and while he sung about her, how she was unique, he met eyes with said girl. a grin appeared on his lips, the heart thumbed hard in his chest and he kept his gaze on her for a moment, before proceeding to grab a watergun handed him by jungkook to sprinkle the other trainees with water on this hot summer night.

he’s nervous the day of the performance, and he wonders if this will always be the case. maybe one failed evaluation has scarred him for life, and he’s doomed to have it flash through his mind before every performance. he reminds himself that that was different; he couldn’t prepare for a switch in their music to go along with an already difficult dance and a daniel that felt drastically less skilled somehow, despite it being mere months ago. 

maybe it’s just new confidence. maybe it’s that this performance is fun, and was his idea-- his evaluation to begin, and his evaluation to finish more than any others with dancing included. 

regardless, that new confidence wavers a little as they’re on deck, following several wonderful performances that daniel tried to enjoy in full but ultimately failed to with this performance heavy on his mind. thankfully, there are still plenty to come, and depending on whether he nails it or fails it, he’ll be able to enjoy them once this is all said and done. there’s the promise of the party on the other side of this too, and one way or another, the performance will come and pass, and--

no, that’s not a winner’s mindset. wasn’t he thinking mere days ago about how much fun he had working on this evaluation? it’s more important now than ever to look like he’s having fun, here on this rooftop in the middle of summer, performing a song that’s full of energy to keep the crowd of other professionals in this industry lively and enjoying the performances. (there are idols there too. he tries not to think about that too much either, or his nerves multiply.)

no, they can do this, and they can do well. he is confident, even as the nerves still flutter in the pit of his stomach when the audience claps after the performance they will follow. he needs a little more confidence, so he says a quick prayer, and flashes back to when he felt the most himself: ironically, while pretending to be someone else. he thinks of empty enigma stages, and his element, and cameo, and he tries to bring some of him back. it worked well for him on the mgas, so why not now? why not every performance from here on out? he can do it.

when he steps on stage, he believes it, even as he looks out at the crowd-- even as he spots haknyeon and the rest of per_se, then and*roma, and his eyes settle on sunmi momentarily. that desperation to prove himself returns, but it’s also accompanied by a desperation to have fun, and a smile that stretches across his face.

it’s a good thing, too, because he sings the first lines, and sets the standard for the entire rest of the performance. 

i wanna run to you all my senses are looking for you right now

he doesn’t have many lines, but he doesn’t mind it. he actually enjoys this choreography, and is content to just dance for most of the song. he hopes the others, most of which it’s their first evaluation, are enjoying themselves too.

maybe, just maybe, in one of the rare times he dances near the front, he’s intentional to catch sunmi’s eye, and even more determined to finish out strongly.

thankfully, he does, and despite all of his previous doubts, the confidence of a job well done and a channeled alter ego has him think as expected.

Dowoon truly doesn’t deserve his mother. After voicing his complaints about the evaluation setting and the chance that he might have to unwilling show his surgery scars, she’d presented him with a a shirt made out of swimwear material. In fact, it reminded Dowoon a little of the top part of a wetsuit. She’d even gone to the effort of finding one with a high neck to help hide the IV scars on his neck too. She really went above and beyond and Dowoon made a mental note to get her something nice soon. Even if he did disagree with her words as she’d handed over the present.

“Dowoon-ah, you know there’s no reason for you to be ashamed of those scars, right? They’re proof of your survival!”

He knows she’s right, but he can’t quite bring himself to accept that yet. Even two years later, he’s still trying to wrap his head around everything he’s overcome so far. However, as he stands ready to perform with the others, he firmly shoves all thoughts about himself and his hang-ups to the back of his mind.

They have a show to put on, after all.

He hadn’t expected to perform with Taeyang two months in a row, but Dowoon was quite happy that the other had joined their group. They’d worked wall together last month and had a good foundation to build on for this month. Plus Dowoon had noticed that Daehwi tended to listen to the older Nova trainee for the most part, which made dealing with his little brother a lot easier. Dowoon hadn’t really seen Haruto since the May evaluation, but any bitter feelings he’d felt towards the younger trainee for beating him and Changbin during the competition evaluation had long since evaporated, so apart from some gentle teasing about the event, they’d worked together without issue.

Daehwi was, well, Daehwi. But as much as he’d complain loudly, Dowoon genuinely enjoyed working with his brother. Plus the fact that they lived together and could practice at home gave them an advantage other groups probably didn’t have.

Adjusting his shirt to makes sure absolutely nothing shows, Dowoon grins as the music begins and they literally call for the audience’s attention. Daehwi really had outdone himself with their choice of song.

Singing in tandem with his brother gives Dowoon a thrill. Their voices give off a natural harmony and contrast well, even as they dance around the stage. Combined with Haruto’s rapping and Taeyang’s vocals, Dowoon finds himself grinning throughout the song, clapping his hands as he dances in an attempts to hype their audience up even more.

Whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo!

After their performance comes to an end, Dowoon affectionately ruffles his brother’s hair despite the other’s complaints and sincerely thanks his other group mates before retreating to a quieter area of the party to eat in peace and watch the rest of the performances.

(And believe it or not, he even gets into the pool for a little while after all. Shirt still on, of course.)

july 2020 eval: summer party fun  perfoming: natsu koi natsu game by an cafe 

he hummed the song that he was going to performing under his breath as they headed to the pool party after lunch. he was pretty excited.

he adjusted his hair after lunch, before his performance was supposed to be upon arrival to make sure that the spikes in his hair were standing properly and all his piercings were properly in. yeah, most often he wore two of the ten piercings he had in each ear, but for evals and more specifically, semi-public performances, he liked to flex a bit.

he wasn't the plain ahjussi type that everyone thought him to be at the company. he was a rocker, through and through and while that rocker side was dormant for the sake of the artist to flourish, sungyeol had always been a bit wild. Even his song choice this time around was a bit on the wild side with almost the entire second verse being a bit erotic ( "chotto eroi..." like that tiktok). His turn to perform came fairly quickly and he took his turn with ease.

After all,  rock  and roll was his wheelhouse in general. he began dancing a bit and while it did look awkward, he managed to pull it off since it was a fairly simple dance and his charisma was high enough to make it seem like a pro. he began singing, his husky voice almost like a seduction game but the song was meant to be a bit sexy and a bit fun.

He did truly love jrock. It was like an almost perfect fit for his husky voice and the missed notes were almost hidden. yes, he still struggled because he'd only began singing recently, but he liked to think that his performance was okay.  it for sure was not the best but it was okay and once he was done, he could relax and have a swim.

he hung out at the party until about 9 pm, and chose to go home at that time, since he wanted to also spend some time with his beloved boyfriend.

july 2020 evaluation: summer party  perfoming eusha eusha and touch my body with jeongguk and seungkwan 

summer fun, summer vibes.

jongsuk seriously loved summer pool parties. it was like the only way to celebrate the summer season. after all, that was the summer was celebrated in california, albeit on beaches and with huge barbecues, but he would take what he was given. if he was given a company pool party, hell yeah, he'd take it all the way.

their performance  was one of the first ones upon their arrival and they took the stage with ease. their practices had paid off and performing a fun medley alongside seungkwan and jeongguk, their trio (or as jongsuk absolutely laughed at, BooSukKook) was having a blast. jongsuk got to show off those high notes of his and why he was aiming for that king of ost crown upon his debut (which was all he really wanted out of everything eventually). the performance also reminded him as to why he loved what he did so much. the feeling of singing in front of large crowd gave him an adrenaline rush and a high that just couldn't be compared to anything at all. that was how he wanted to feel all the time.

On a constant performance high. That adrenaline rush made his heart pound inside his chest and with every word, every note, it was just getting louder and louder. jongsuk craved that high. once they finished their performance, he went to grab a well deserved glass of fruit punch and reached for a pool floaty. "we've earned a good time, boys!" he exclaimed, grinning.

as soon as all the performances were over, jongsuk was in the pool, with the fruity drink on a floaty, floating back and forth in neon colored green swim trunks. "we worked so hard! now we can play hard!" he exclaimed, laughing loudly and drinking the juice. was it the juice? or was it that extra energy that he still had from their performance? no one would really know and he could rock with this.

summer has always been one of his favorite seasons. the sun, the chill vibes, that feeling of easiness that permeates the air. there's just something inexplicably refreshing about summer that equates it to fun in the sun, and those are things he'll never get tired of.

(actually, chanyeol loves all the seasons, but we're not talking about the other three right now.)

it's no wonder, then, that the summer season always brings upbeat and cheerful songs to the charts when that time hits, and really really is no exception. while not really a song about the summer season, it still embodies the season's carefree feeling. when he thinks back to three years ago when the song had first released, he remembers vividly how often he'd heard it playing over the airwaves, in the stores, at his work, even on his friends' playlists. it had been a massive hit, and chanyeol likes to think it's because it's such a feel-good, summery song that it's hard not to like.

it makes it a little bit nerve-racking to perform it when he thinks about it like that. he doesn't like to use the word legendary too often (a lie; he's quite the exaggerator), but he thinks the song has achieved such status when even years later, the song is still just as enjoyable to listen to as it was when he'd first heard it.

so that's what he thinks about instead when he performs, a focus on making the song enjoyable. he performs the song to have fun first and foremost over everything else, over technique, over trying to perfect dance moves, over trying to impress any of the staff or anyone else who's watching. after all, isn't such a carefree attitude what makes it such a summery song in the first place?

once the performance finishes, he would love nothing more than to jump into the pool straight from the stage, but he'd hate to ruin the only lightweight suit he owns, so he decides against it. that, however, is the last true thinking he does for the evening, because since that's all and done with, all he has left to do now for the night is have fun, and that's exactly what he'll do.
