Mr. Sigurdson: With more than a quarter of a million legal firearms owners in the province and with tens of thousands more licensed here every year, there’s no doubt in my mind that Alberta is one of Ottawa’s primary targets in its campaign of fearmongering and persecution around firearms. The previous member said that this government is picking a fight. We’re not picking the fight. Ottawa picked the fight. We’re trying to stand up for Albertans.

Mr. Sigurdson: Frankly, what Albertans have done is shed the light of truth on the work of Tides and their sources of foreign funding.

In that spirit I’d like to remind the House of the facts when it comes to Tides or MakeWay, as it will now be known. Let’s start with their funding. Between 2000 and 2010 Tides Canada and projects undertaken in Canada by the U.S. Tides Foundation saw more than $55 million funnelled from U.S. foundations to attack our industry. What have they done with this money? Here are a few examples. They sent tens of thousands of dollars to West Coast Environmental Law to fund legal action to constrain the expansion of our oil sands and attempted to delay critical pipeline projects with endless lawsuits. They sent thousands more to Sierra Club BC to fund activism meant to stop the export of our resources from the B.C. coast. They even funded a Greenpeace website that attacked Alberta’s tourism sector.

Mr. Speaker, the actions of Tides Canada and their radical U.S. allies are shameful.

please enjoy this very special Bill 202 “witch hunt” round-up Bill 202 would have given the Ethics Commissioner more power to do her job. I wonder why UCP members wouldn’t want that? Mr. Sigurdson: I mean, there are a lot of very, very problematic parts to this bill. It’s made it so broad that it opens up more and more witch hunts that are going to continue to waste more and more time and money of the government. 

Mr. Sigurdson: I hear things: flexibility of definition. The member opposite talked about a witch hunt. I think we’ve seen enough already in this 30th Legislature that when I look at things – this bill is so broad in what this is changing right now.  

Mr. Sigurdson: What they’ve changed there now opens this up to exactly what you said it wouldn’t: never-ending witch hunts. 

Mr. Sigurdson: To me, this entire bill is just ultimately a train wreck, and if anything it’s for the purposes of building on your continued witch hunts. I’m sure that that is the intent of this bill in its entirety. 

Ms Glasgo: We want to get more people involved in politics, but the problem is that if you have these spurious allegations and absolutely ridiculous claims and a witch hunt constantly happening, you’re going to discourage people from running for public office.

Mr. Sigurdson: I think I still am with my original statement about a train wreck and that this has just been put out there to continue the witch hunt, so I’ll be voting no. 

Mr. Horner: I think this bill should have “witch hunt” somewhere in its title, to be honest, and I will definitely be voting no.

Mr. Sigurdson: Mr. Speaker, when the NDP were in office, Alberta’s constitutional rights were bulldozed by Justin Trudeau, and the NDP stood by and did nothing. Under this United Conservative government that will never happen again. The attack on Alberta’s resource industries from the NDP-Liberal coalition stops here. It stops today. That message is what we send to Ottawa.
