Something For Ourselves
Happy Christmas @xoheatherkw
A little something Bughead from your secret Santa; hope you enjoy!
Snow. The bane of holiday travel. Currently the bane of Betty Cooper’s entire existence.
And not just snow.
He’d said it. The one word that would ruin everything.
Nor’easter.
That stupid contraction that set to topple every single well-laid plan Betty had made for the next three days. Well, to be fair, they were mostly her mother’s plans. But for the first time in the six years they’d been together, Jughead was coming home with her.
Not that they didn’t travel together for the holidays every year, they did, but they’d spend Christmas Eve and morning with their respective families before meeting up at the Andrews later on Christmas day. This year, however, Jellybean had decided to spend her break with some friends in Aspen rather trek back to Riverdale. Because of this, FP also absconded, deigning his bones couldn’t take another year of the cold. He’d packed up all he could on his bike back in October and took off for sunnier skies.
She can still remember the look on Jughead’s face when he’d told her; lying on their bed, flannel-clad arm slung across his eyes, as he tried desperately not to let the hurt shine through. He’d talked about staying in the city, spending Christmas alone. And the fact that he hadn’t even thought she’d want to ask him to come with her, stung quite a bit more than she’d wanted to admit.
Finally, Betty had convinced him to come. Apparently, her enthusiasm for gingerbread building contests was enough to sway even the most disparate cynic. Or maybe it was when she’d admitted that she’d always wanted him with her. That even though they’d been living together for nearly three years, it wasn’t quite enough; that as crazy and manic and downright unpleasant as it could be with Alice Cooper at the helm, she wanted nothing more than for Jughead to dive into the fray with her.
“Betts?” Jughead placed his hand on her shoulder, catching the collar of her shirt between his thumb and forefinger. She felt the familiar tug as her eyes sought his, her lower lip nervously sucked between her teeth.
“Maybe it’s just a delay! I mean, my mom won’t be happy that she’ll have to push the candy-construction extravaganza back a few hours, but if we can get in at some point tonight…”
Jughead crooked his head to the side, an errant curl falling across his forehead as a sad smile tugged at the corner of his lips. “Babe, I don’t think we’re going anywhere tonight,” he pulled the phone from his back pocket, grimaced at the screen and set in down on the coffee table next to them. “Or, in the foreseeable future from the looks of the forecast.”
“It’s so unfair, Juggie!” Betty felt herself deflate. “Sure, I wanted a white Christmas, but I wanted to be in Riverdale to enjoy it!” Jughead chuckled and dropped the hand that was still playing with the collar of Betty’s shirt. She couldn’t help the pout that seemed to overtake her face, but it was Christmas Eve dammit, and as the shrill ring of her phone cut through the room, she remembered the worst was yet to come.
Jughead leaned forward, placing a gentle kiss on Betty’s forehead as the ringing started again. She watched him disappear behind the wall that separated their living room from their kitchen and heard the tell-tale signs of coffee being made. Smiling ever so slightly, Betty took a deep breath before answering her phone to the onslaught of questions lobbed by her mother.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“How’d she take it?” Jughead asked, leaning against the counter as he held the steaming cup to his lips. Betty’s head dropped forward, blonde hair dancing around her as it shook back and forth.
“Somehow, it’s your fault,” she crossed the few feet between them, grabbing her own festively emblazoned mug from the cupboard and filling it with the hot brew. Now standing next to him, she looked up to see the annoyance play across his face.
“Ah, yes, I can control the weather. And clearly it’s in my best interest to keep their youngest daughter away from family frivolities.”
Betty rolled her eyes as she made her way out of the kitchen and back to the living room. “Because you should care about being in their good graces. Jug, she didn’t care that we’re supposed to see unprecedented amounts of snowfall, she cared that she now had two extra gingerbread house kits and how long tomorrow they’d have to wait for us to try and arrive before they got on with their holiday.”
“That Alice really is a peach.” Jughead sat down on the couch next to her, placing his free hand on her knee and making gentle circles with his thumb. “Is that all she said?”
Betty’s silence was answer enough for him. “But that’s all that bears repeating,” she turned on the couch to face him, the worn floral jacquard scratching through her leggings. The cup twisted nervously between her palms, coffee sloshing up to the brim, never spilling over but forcing his attention to it and away from her face.
“Betty,” his hand slid from her leg to her hands, stilling the cup and the agitation that threatened to spill over. “Is it just about Christmas?”
Her head shook slightly.
“What’d she say this time?”
She felt his hand slide off of hers and in her periphery, could see the clenching of his jaw and the way his eyes squeezed shut, just a little tighter than usual. “No, Jughead. Whatever she says, doesn’t matter. I don’t care that the Cooper Christmas streak has been broken, I’m not upset that we won’t be there for Christmas Eve. I mean, I am, but that’s only because I finally got to share it with you.”
“Betts…”
“I knew you were upset, about your dad, and JB taking off for Christmas even if you didn’t say it in so many words. So I wanted to make this special for you. Remind you that you’ve got more family than you know.”
Betty set her cup down on the table and felt him shift beside her, when she turned back he was already off the couch and turning down the hall to their bedroom. She sighed. Pushing herself from the sofa she padded down the hall and stopped in the doorway of their room. She watched as he rifled through his bag before turning back to her and holding out a pair of pajamas adorned with Santa-hatted llamas.
“Put these on.”
“Jughead?” He crossed the room and put them in her hands.
“Betty, please don’t make this awkward and pretend like you didn’t get me something with penguins or jingle-bells,” When she couldn’t help the blush that crept up her cheeks, she laughed, stretching on tiptoe to place a gentle kiss on Jughead’s cheek. She had, in fact, bought him pajamas. And when she handed him the t-rex printed flannel set, she actually saw him smile.
“What are we doing, Jug?” He slipped his hand under her chin and tilted it up toward his face, before his lips covered hers, slowly, deeply.
“Our flight is effectively canceled. Nothing is getting in, or out, until tomorrow morning at the earliest,” he pulled away slightly before putting his lips to hers again. “So put those on and meet me in the living room in five.” He kissed her just about breathless again before slinking out of the room.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Alright Mister Jones,” Betty sashayed into the space in her new llama jammies and the warmest, fuzziest socks she owned. “Now what?”
Jughead smiled warmly as he beckoned her to join him on the couch. “I know missing Christmas is a big deal. Not just because your mom will use it against you for years to come, but because it means so much to you. Because your family means so much to you. The fact that you consider me family too, Betty, is just something that never ceases to amaze me.”
“Juggie,” she tried to interrupt but he pulled her into his lap instead. Immediately her arms snaked around his neck as his came to settle around her waist.
“While getting caught in a blizzard isn’t exactly my idea of a good time, we’re home, in our apartment and we’re still together. So it’s still a Christmas of firsts, and maybe, I don’t know we’ll find something tonight that we can carry forward, into future Christmas Eves.”
Betty could feel the smile that threatened to take over her face. If she could bottle the warmth she felt radiating from him, or somehow contain that particular sparkle in his blue eyes whenever he nervously mentioned their futures, just for those days when his self-deprecation and anxiety threatened to overtake him, just to remind him those feelings are reciprocated. “A tradition of our own,” she leaned forward and captured his lips with hers. “We’ve got out pajamas, what else did you have in mind?”
Jughead leaned his head against the cushion while Betty’s fingers played with the hair at the nape of his neck. “I know you’re not particularly fond of the horror genre, but, there are a plethora of cross-marketing delights in the holiday horror subgenre. I can almost guarantee you that not one of these films will be actually scary, and will still technically fill the quota for thematic film consumption.”
“You want to watch scary Christmas movies?” She questioned playfully. There really wasn’t a whole lot she wouldn’t do for this man. It had been a long road getting to where they were. It likely wouldn’t all be rainbows and butterflies from that point on either. So if he wants to spend Christmas Eve in his pj’s, watching horrible films, damn right you’re going to find Betty Cooper curled up by his side. “Well, what are we going to eat? We don’t exactly have lots of food at the ready considering we aren’t supposed to be here.”
Betty watched Jughead’s Adam’s apple bob in his throat heavily. Clearly, he hadn’t thought about food. She had to bite back the laugh that threatened when his stomach seemed to gurgle on cue. “I’ll go see what I can whip up; you pick out something awful.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Twenty minutes later she came back with the fixings of a hearty breakfast. Bacon, eggs, toast, fresh coffee…all the things that had eaten for actual breakfast just a few hours before. Jughead took the plates from her hands and set them on the table before excitedly turning back to the television.
“You will not believe what I’ve found for us. It looks like it might just be the worst movie ever made,” Jughead said proudly as he shoved a slice of bacon into his mouth.
Betty’s eyes flickered to the screen before she looked up confused. “Wasn’t Jack Frost a children’s movie?”
“Well, yes, but that’s not what this is. This is cheesy, nineties, horror glory!”
“Someone’s excited,” she noticed his giddiness turned sheepish in an instant. “How long have you wanted to do this, Jug?”
“What, Christmas-horror-thon?” Betty nodded, obviously. “Well it was something I always wanted to do with Jelly, I guess, but that never happened. I guess it’s just been in the back of my mind ever since.” He rubbed the back of his neck as he settled into the corner of the couch.
“Thank you.” Betty said softly as she set her plate on the table and scuttled up the couch to be closer to him.
“For what, baby?” Her head laid on his chest as his fingers began to weave through her hair.
“For sharing it with me. For wanting to make this, ours.” She felt his lips press on the crown of her head as a contended sigh rose out of her. Once he’d assured she was comfortable, he pressed play on what would become the first of many horrible films consumed on Christmas Eve.
They managed to get through Jack Frost with no less than three what the fucks, five instances of uproarious laughter, and two, stop and go back we have to re-watch that’s.
“What did we just watch? Did that really just happen?” Betty said, still laughing as the credits rolled.
“Ninety minutes of your life you wish you could have back?” Jughead asked as he stretched, sinking deeper into the couch and bringing Betty with him.
“No,” she replied, smiling softly and tracing the curve of his jaw with her fingers. “As terrible as that was, and it really, really was, I was with you. It doesn’t get much better than that Jughead Jones.”
“So, think we have a contender for Christmas Eve? Or is our impromptu movie night a one-and-done?”
“I think, that the only way tonight could have been better is if we’d have had real food. I dig the breakfast idea, don’t get me wrong, but I’m thinking next year we do crepes or maybe cinnamon rolls…” before she could name another food Jughead’s mouth was on hers, hands tangled in her hair, body pulled flush against his.
“This is the best present I have ever gotten. I love you, Betty Cooper.” She managed to untangle herself from his arms and pulled herself off the couch. She stood in front of him, tired, hair haphazardly in a bun atop her head, no make-up and never looking more beautiful.
“Jughead Jones, I love you. Let’s go get into bed, and I can show you the other present you’ll be thankful we’re not in my parent’s house for.” With a wink, she turned and headed down the hallway. She hadn’t gotten but three steps in when strong arms circled her from behind and the voice in her ear whispered,
“Best Christmas ever.”
She had never been more inclined to agree.

“Are you sure about this, Betty?” Jughead asked, his breath tickling the shell of her ear.
“Yes,” Betty insisted. “Are you? Because now would be a really bad time to tell me you aren’t.”
Betty thinks her next kiss should be with someone special. Jughead doesn’t think about kissing anyone.
This is my Riverdale Holiday Exchange 2017 gift for @rikyl. It got away from me and ended up way too long. But the ending is kind of cute?
Happy Holidays to all!

(i knew that it was) now or never
There have been many times, in the nearly thirteen years that he’s known her, that Jughead Jones has watched Betty Cooper approach him, and his heart hasn’t felt like it was collapsing into his stomach.
Now is not one of those times.
(Betty, Jughead, and the First Annual Riverdale High Senior Scavenger Hunt, as presented by Veronica Lodge.)

~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Betty was curled up with Jughead on his couch, perfectly content to waste the day away and catch up on some much needed relaxation. It was the start of their winter break and her mother was busy following up on a story, which allowed her the opportunity to actually relax under the guise of working ahead on her school projects.
She was settled between his legs on the couch, her back pressed up against his chest. Every now and then, his fingertips would caress the back of her arm and she just snuggled further into his embrace.
Then she heard it.
A low grumble emanated from behind her, the low vibrations reaching her back. "Jug! How are you still hungry?" she asked. They had just eaten at Pop's about an hour ago, and he ate two cheeseburgers, fries, onion rings, and a large vanilla milkshake.
"I can't help it, Betts," he shrugged.
She turned in his grasp, before standing abruptly. She extended her hand to him and he laced their fingers together. She tugged him to an upright position and led them to his kitchen. "Come on, let's see what we can make."
She let go of their hands and started opening the cupboards. She let out a frustrated sigh when all she found was salt and pepper, an opened bag of brown sugar that had long since hardened to a rock, and a dusting of flour in a container that wasn't useful for any amount of baking.
She switched gears and inspected their fridge, but only discovered a handful of condiments and a nearly empty container of orange juice. She quickly closed the fridge with a sigh.
"Well this isn't going to work," she exasperated. "How do you two survive on ketchup and mustard?" she muttered.
He shrugged. The real answer was he survived on the kindness of Pop and the Andrews family, because if not for them he’d likely starve. "You know me, I manage," he replied, unsure if her question was rhetorical or not.
She rummaged through a few more cabinet and drawers, making a mental list of what they would need. Whisk, baking sheets, cooling rack, and all the ingredients to make… well anything.
She smirked at him and took him by the hand. “What do you say about us making chocolate chip cookies?”
Jughead immediately thought of the mouthwatering delicacies that were commonly found in the Cooper household. “I think I could be persuaded to bake,” he teased.
“Come on, we need to go to the grocery store. And maybe Mal-Mart.”
They bundled up and headed out.
Jughead placed his hand on her knee after he shifted into drive for the short trip to the grocery store, drawing small circles over her jeans.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
They returned from their shopping venture with enough food to feed an army... Or the Jones men for maybe a week. Betty insisted that she make them a home cooked meal, and prepare several casseroles that they could pop in the oven for dinners during the week.
Jughead acquired quite the appetite while they were out shopping, so they picked up a pizza on their way back to his place.
Jughead carefully balanced all the bags from the grocery store and left Betty in charge of bringing in the pizza. Their shoes crunched over the light dusting of snow that accumulated since they left (luckily none stuck to the roads) as they rushed back inside to the warmth.
Betty set the pizza down on his coffee table and followed him into the kitchen. She selectively set out the ingredients they would need for chocolate chip cookies, while he put away the perishable items. She made sure to open the package of butter and set two sticks on the counter to soften.
"Did you mean to leave those out?" He asked.
"We need to let the butter soften."
"Why can't we just pop it in the microwave when we need it?"
"That will ruin the consistency."
"Of course," he remarked.
Semantics, he reasoned. But she was the one taking the lead on baking, so who was he to argue?
All the groceries and supplies were put away within a few minutes, and the pair spent a lazy hour curled up on the couch and eating pizza.
After the episode, Betty took his hand and stood up, bringing him with her. "Come on, Juggie. Time for cookies."
Helpless against her pleas, he trailed behind her.
She put on an apron (another item they needed in the Jones kitchen) and handed him the second. She got two identical aprons with a simple pattern, lemons and limes on an ivory background with a green border.
"I'll get the butter and vanilla going. Can you get me three-quarter cup each of sugar and brown sugar?"
She got out the electric mixer and tested the 'give' on the butter before opening the wrapper. It was the perfect consistency.
A second later, Jughead brought over a mix of sugar and brown sugar in one of the two cup measuring containers. He was about to pour it in, when she raised a hand to stop him.
"What's that?" She asked.
"Um, the sugar you asked for?" His tone ended the statement with a question.
"That's for liquids," she clarified.
His eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "But it's the same measurement. Why should it matter if it's in the larger measuring cup or not?"
She pressed get fingertips to her forehead. This was going to be more difficult than she realized. She looked back up at him and gently guided the measuring cup onto the counter. "The big measuring cup with the spout," she pointed at the one he used for the sugar. "That's used for liquids. The individual measuring cups are for solids." She pointed at the stacked cups next to the sugar she set out earlier. "You make sure you have an even amount by running a flat edge over it to make it level. Got it?"
"I think I can manage... Can we just use what I got out? Even though I used the wrong measuring cup?"
"That depends. Did you pack the brown sugar?"
The questioning look on his face told her the answer was likely no. So, she tried a different approach. "Have you done any baking before?"
He smiled sheepishly. "Not exactly. I can cook. Granted only a handful of things like grilled cheese, and eggs… sometimes. But the Jones family doesn't really bake," he admitted.
She smiled warmly at him. "Well then, it's time to change that. Don't you think?"
With that bright smile, he couldn't resist anything she asked of him.
She helped him get the sugar. Then once he got the hang of that, she showed him how to crack an egg without getting the shell into the batter (something he still hadn't mastered in the few times he made eggs for breakfast).
She left him to his own devices to get their flour, and he only spilled a few times while trying to get an even layer before tossing it into the mix.
It wasn't long before they had cookie dough ready to go. They just needed to divide it up into baking sheets and put them in the oven.
Their playful touches throughout his baking lesson left them wearing a bit of the flour and sugar as well. He brushed up next to her, secretly swiping his index finger into the cookie dough. "I think you have a little something, right here." He swiped the cookie dough on her cheek, delighted with himself that he got away with it before she noticed.
She swatted his hand away and glared at him. "I don't think you know who has the upper hand here," she challenged. "We only bought enough chocolate chips for one batch, and I haven't given you the recipe yet." She didn't volunteer that the recipe she used, but memorized probably ten years earlier, was the one on the back of the chocolate chip cookie bag.
His eyes widened, and he tried to tell if she was joking or not. After a split second of internal deliberations, he figured he would rather not risk it. "I concede." He threw his hands up in surrender. "Can we go back to making the cookies? Please?" He added for good measure.
She narrowed her eyes at him. "Alright."
The tiniest dab of cookie dough was still on her cheek, so he swiped it off and popped it in his mouth, savoring the sweetness.
"Jug! You can't eat raw cookie dough."
"Says who?"
"The board of health for one." She playfully shoved his shoulder. "And because I say so. Just help me with the cookies."
She got out two spoons and handed him one. "Just get small rounded teaspoon full and drop them on the baking sheet."
She got a few on the sheet and looked over to see Jughead's were about three sizes too big. She laughed and corrected him.
"Why can't I have large cookies, Betts?" He protested.
"They won't cook evenly, that's why," she teased back.
They put the first two baking sheets in the oven, having to wait until the baking sheets were free again to bake the remainder.
Jughead nibbled on a few within a minute of taking them out of the oven, which just got a shake of her head at his impatience.
They got the second half in the oven, and as Jughead stood upright, she placed the (now nearly empty) mixing bowl over his head. His beanie was long discarded, as to not get flour all over it.
She stifled a laugh as she caught the sight of his black curls underneath the bowl. "You started it Jug," she reminded him.
He had a wicked grin as he removed said bowl and chased her back into the living room and tickled her in retaliation.
They spent the rest of their afternoon laughing and just enjoying each other's company, snuggled up on the couch for the remainder of the evening. Betty occasionally found a small remnant of cookie dough when she ran her fingers through his hair.
He didn't mind though. He was happier to spend his time stealing kisses in between their TV watching marathon, and only bothered to shower and wash his hair after she left late in the evening.
~ ~ The next day ~ ~
Betty was coming over later that day. Her mother was out following up on another story, so she didn’t even have to make up an excuse. But knowing Betty she would probably actually make them study, or work ahead on their assignments, which they neglected to do the day before. Not that he minded.
After her little baking lesson, Jughead was determined to show off his newly found culinary skills by making a batch of chocolate chip cookies. Betty was kind enough to start a recipe collection on a few index cards, in one of their kitchen drawers; although she was insistent on getting them a recipe box, so they wouldn’t get misplaced.
Jughead even made a late-night trip to the grocery store the night prior and stocked up on more chocolate chips, sugar, and flour. Especially after he spilled a good portion of the dry ingredients on the counter.
He prepared a batch of cookies, with a few mishaps- getting egg shells in the batter, spilling flour, accidentally melting and nearly burning the butter because he was too impatient for it to soften, and wearing a handful of the ingredients on his flannel shirt.
He successfully shaped the cookies in teaspoon sized (because Betty insisted that they wouldn’t cook evenly if he made them the size that he wanted to), and placed them in the oven. He started cleaning up and eventually went to change clothes.
Apparently, he forgot to set the timer, and only realized it a few minutes too late when he removed the baking sheets to discover the cookies were burnt to a crisp. They went into the trash, and he started another batch of cookies.
He promptly took them out when the timer went off, and was about to taste test the cookies when he heard a few knocks at the door.
He rushed over and opened the door for Betty.
“Hi Juggie,” she said, throwing her arms around his neck in a tight embrace.
“Hey Betts,” he whispered into her hair.
“Mmm, are you making cookies?” She pulled back a little and looked over his shoulder, seeing the edge of baking sheets cooling on the stovetop.
“Yeah, I just took them out,” he said proudly. “Come on, you have to try one.”
“Don’t tell me you ate all the cookies we made yesterday?” The batch made five dozen, and they ate about a dozen between the two of them.
“Maybe,” he answered with a sly smile. Between late night snacks and breakfast, the Jones men polished off the remaining cookies earlier that day.
He pulled her by the hand into the kitchen. He carefully lifted one of the cookies with a spatula, and placed it in his hand to test how hot it was. Finding it acceptable to the touch, yet still hot, he handed it over to her.
“You’re cute, you know that?” She smirked and accepted it from him. She took a small bite, mindful of the temperature.
Her cheerful expression fell to one of confusion. She promptly spit out the cookie into his trashcan, and the remaining cookie along with it. “I think you forgot something Jug.”
He looked around the counter, moving the mixing bowl and discovering the untouched container of white sugar. “Oh,” he muttered under his breath. He was wondering why this batch was slightly smaller than his previously attempted batch of about five dozen, and why the cookies were a little darker than normal. At least he remembered the brown sugar.
“Yeah, oh. You forgot to add the sugar, Jug.” She chuckled a little and helped him dispose of the cookies. “Maybe I shouldn’t leave you to your own devices in the kitchen after all,” she concluded.
“Ha ha,” he said dryly.
She placed a gentle hand on his arm. “Come on, let’s make a batch together,” she offered.
He wrapped her up in a hug circled his arms around her waist, running his fingertips on the small of her back, where her shirt had lifted and exposed her skin. “Have I ever told you what a great girlfriend you are,” he muttered. He placed a gentle kiss to the crook of her neck, pleased when she shivered slightly.
She sighed happily and tilted her head up. She kissed his lips, smiling into the kiss. “You may have mentioned it once or twice.”

A Holiday Fic Exchange gift for @imreallyloveleee!
One summer can change everything.
Instead of going to LA for a glamorous internship, Betty Cooper finds herself stuck in Riverdale, caught between two of her best friends.
The prompt asked for a fic in which Archie decides he does want to try dating Betty during the events of the pilot episode, exploring how that changes the way Betty's relationship develops with Jughead. I went back to the beginning of the summer, though, because I thought Archie had more reason to consider Betty before he was distracted by Miss Grundy and then Veronica.
I probably should have picked a less complicated prompt because I’m a slow writer, but I loved this prompt and hope you don’t mind waiting for a second half. There’s more Barchie than I intended in this first chapter, but I promise will have more Jughead and more Bughead to come. Also more friendship between the core three, because they’re all important to me.

Heart of Gold - beggie
An additional treat for the Riverdale Holiday Exchange 2017. For @buggiekinsx with the prompt: beggie + Christmas (with mistletoe, oh my!)
College/future fic. Actual classes and professors based on personal experience (ugh). I *may* have researched cheesy pick up lines for Reggie.
Read on AO3 / FF
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Veronica's celebratory post-finals party was in full swing. Betty was sipping the fruity cocktail that Kevin made for the occasion. She mingled a bit, saying hi to the few acquittances that she made in her first semester at NYU, but ultimately circled back to Kevin and Ethel.
Ethel smiled brightly, noticing her before Kevin had. "Betttyyyyyy! You're back," she slurred.
Betty inserted herself right in between Kevin and Ethel, running a comforting hand down her friend's arm. "You alright?" She asked.
She nodded rather forcefully and slung her arm around Betty's waist. "I missed yoooouuuu," she said affectionately.
Betty turned her attention to Kevin. "You were supposed to keep an eye on her." The annoyance in her tone was unmistakable.
Kevin simply shrugged. "She needs to let loose, and I am keeping an eye on her. Besides, she deserves it after this semester. I could say the same for you," he said with a pointed look.
Betty did not need the reminder. She and Ethel took a course to satisfy one of those pesky general education requirements with the professor from hell. They thought Russian Fairytales would be a piece of cake. In reality, they had more required readings than most of the rest of her classes combined, with pop quizzes nearly every week. It was supposed to be their easy class for the semester. But, at the very least, their non-western requirement for graduation was done and over with.
Ethel leaned into her and Betty rubbed her hand up and down Ethel's arm. "Hey, I'm going to get you some water. Okay?"
Ethel just hummed in response, slightly swaying in her efforts to stay upright.
"You'll keep an eye on her, won't you?" She directed at Kevin. At this rate, Ethel would have a killer hangover tomorrow, and hydrating was key to minimizing it.
"Scout’s honor."
"You were never an eagle scout," Betty huffed. She gently extracted herself from Ethel and made a bee line for the kitchen.
She quickly surveyed the fridge, not finding any water bottles. Either their friends drank all of them, or the more likely scenario was that Veronica forgot to put more in the fridge. She grabbed a glass from the cupboard and filled it with ice and water. She turned, intent on going back to Ethel, when someone's broad shoulder nearly body checked her. She ended up spilling a little bit on her too tight and too short dress (Veronica's doing). "Hey! Watch where you're going- Mantle?"
Reggie was briefly starstruck by the breathtaking beauty in front of him. He had always thought she was beautiful, but seeing her tonight was on a whole other level.
"Cooper, hey," he said casually. He took the few precious seconds of her swiping the water off her dress to really appreciate her. The deep V dress did wonders to accentuate her assets, and the form fitting burgundy dress hugged her curves in all the right places. Combined with her hair down in waves and a smoky eye, he was impressed that he even got two words out.
He hadn't even seen her since graduation - nearly six months prior. He wasn’t exactly in her circle in high school, so they didn’t keep in touch. Much to his chagrin.
Sure, they were going to the same university, but he hadn't had the fortune of bumping into her - literally - until that night. It was only pure luck that Veronica noticed him in the quad the other day and extended an invite to her Christmas themed party before break.
Betty brushed off what she could and finally looked up to meet his gaze. The apologetic look on his face made hers soften slightly. "Just try to watch your step next time, okay?"
He placed his hand over his heart. "I'm sorry, Betty," he said sincerely. Reggie stepped a bit more into her personal space, enough so he could lean down and whisper in her ear. "I was blinded by your beauty." He pulled back, so he could give her a wink. "I'm going to need your contact information for insurance purposes."
Betty let out a good laugh, setting down the glass on the counter as to not spill any more. "Wow, does that line actually work on girls here?" She gently wiped the wetness pooling at her lash line from laughing so hard.
"You'd be surprised," he said with a smirk.
"Then I have less faith in my gender than I previously thought." She shook her head slightly, not the least bit surprised. Reggie was always a charmer.
"How have you been, Betty?"
She smiled softly. "I've been good, Reggie. I'm so glad the semester is over though."
"I hear you on that one. Dr. Alas was a tough grader for my Western Civilization class. I worked my ass off and got an A-."
"You had Dr. Alas too? Which section?" Surely, she would have noticed if they were in the same class, wouldn’t she? Although the class size was over a hundred people.
"I was in his 9am class. Remind me not to take a class that early." He missed a few classes due to hitting his snooze too many times.
"Ahh, the 9am section conflicted with my Creative Writing class. I was in his afternoon section." Betty was thankful she scheduled classes with a two-hour break for lunch, as she recently discovered her love affair for naps during lunch. And it better prepared her for her afternoon classes, so it was a win-win.
"Small world, Cooper. Small world," he muttered.
She ran her hand down his arm, squeezing his hand briefly before dropping it. "I need to get back to Ethel. Maybe I'll see you later?"
He stepped back and ran his hand across the back of his neck. "Yeah, of course. See you around."
She picked up the glass with the same hand that grabbed Reggie's hand. The cool touch did nothing to calm the warmth his skin left behind.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
About an hour later, the party had died down a little bit. Betty took advantage of not being needed at that very moment and she made herself another drink and collapsed on the sofa. Her dress moved on its own accord up her thighs just a touch more than she was comfortable with, but didn't have the energy to care.
She just had to wait a little longer until it was socially acceptable to go to bed at her own party, and lock herself in her room to get some sleep.
"You're not falling asleep, are you?" The familiar voice had Betty picking her head up from the back of the couch and opening her eyes, not even realizing she had closed them.
"No, just resting my eyes… So, we meet again, Reggie," she said.
"Do you mind if I sit?" He pointed at the free spot next to her.
"Course not." She turned slightly so she could prop her head up on the back of her hand, crossing her legs and tugging her dress down with the other hand. He sat down on the spot next to her, accidentally brushing his knee against hers. If she noticed, she didn't back away. "Sorry about running off earlier. I needed to make sure Ethel was okay."
"No worries. How’s she doing?"
"She’s good. She’s in the kitchen with Ronnie. They ordered pizza."
Her eyes started to droop on their own accord. The late-night studying was really taking its toll, and all she wanted to do all break is sleep. And maybe eat Christmas cookies.
"That's good. You know, if you're too tired, I can head out. I'm sure you get plenty of beauty rest." He threw another wink her way.
She patted his knee gently, not bothering to remove her hand afterward. "You're smooth Reggie, I'll give you that. But no, I think I can stay awake long enough to catch up with a friend."
"Yeah, I'd like that Betty." The warmth of her skin was already distracting him, even through his jeans. But he didn't dare say anything to stop her. "So, let me guess, you're majoring in Journalism?" He raised a questioning eyebrow at her.
"You know me too well, Reggie. Are you playing football here?"
"No, actually. I was offered a scholarship, but since my parents could afford to send me here, I figured I should get out before I have too many concussions." At least he had the option available to him.
"Sounds logical. Let me guess what you're majoring in... Business?" She predicted.
"History actually. I want to be a teacher."
She smiled. "I could see that."
She only then registered that her hands were tracing patterns on his knee. She found that she didn't want to stop, mesmerized by the animated story Reggie was telling her about how he wanted to follow his own passion instead of following in his father's footsteps. She felt drawn to him in a way she hadn't, with anyone, in a while. And every now and then he'd look at her with such an intensity that it nearly took her breath away.
They even discovered they were in the same Statistics class next semester, both preferring that choice over the calculus option to satisfy their math requirement.
They laughed and just caught each other up on their lives since graduation.
She was genuinely having a good time. And she found that she wasn’t even tired anymore.
“Betty,” Ethel interjected.
Betty pulled back and shook her head to clear her mind. She found herself becoming more enamored with Reggie, the more time she spent with him.
Reggie's hand stilled, having found her arm at some point during their conversation and was running his fingers up and down her delicate skin.
Betty turned around to find the source, her eyes landing on a very tired yet blissfully happy Ethel. She was a cute and happy drunk, just content to be with her friends.
“Can you take me home? Kevin is preoccupied with a guy from his Economics class.”
Betty rolled her eyes at that. That was the one thing she asked of him, considering she decorated for the party all afternoon. But, he’s been in kind of a funk lately, so she couldn’t blame him too much.
She smiled warmly at her friend. “Yeah, sure. I’ll order us a Swift.” She turned back to Reggie, finding herself surprisingly disappointed that she would have to leave. “I’m just going to ride with her and make sure she gets home safe. I’ll be back, if you’ll still be here?” She raised an eyebrow.
A couple quick taps on her phone said their Swift would be there in approximately ten minutes.
He leaned back on the couch, spreading his arms across the back. Play it cool, he thought. “Yeah, yes. I mean, probably – I’ll probably still be here,” he said with a shrug of his shoulders. He internally groaned over his fumbling. Real smooth.
Betty placed a gentle hand on his arm and smiled. “I’m just going to use the restroom, and grab my coat from my bedroom,” she directed at Ethel. “Meet me by the foyer?”
Ethel nodded and went off to locate her own coat in their hallway closet.
Betty excused herself to the restroom.
When she exited and turned towards her bedroom, she bumped into another broad shoulder for the second time that night. She and Reggie ran into each other - quite literally- in the hallway near the bathroom. Her hands landed on his shoulders and he gripped her waist to steady himself. Neither one of them moved from their embrace.
"You should really watch where you're going," she breathed out.
“We need to stop meeting like this, Cooper.” He let out a light chuckle. Either he was really lucky to keep running into Betty, or the universe was taunting him with the unobtainable.
Just then, Veronica appeared in the hallway, intent on going to the restroom. Until she saw something much more interesting.
"Ooh, look who's under the mistletoe! You know what that means." She slightly stumbled as she took another step forward, extending her finger to point at the pair. "Betty and Reggie, K-i-s-s-i-n-g.”
Betty rolled her eyes. Tipsy Veronica was even less inhibited than usual, and she had been trying to set Betty up for months. As much as they wanted to stay together, the long distance was too much for her and Trev and they broke up about a month into the semester. He was planning on going to school on the west coast next year, so it was only a matter of time anyways.
The gentle caress on her waist brought her back to the present.
The pair leaned back slightly. They looked up, seeing the mistletoe that Betty nearly forgot Veronica had hung (all throughout their apartment). She wasn't sure if she should be cursing or thanking Veronica in this moment. She knew Reggie's reputation of being a play boy, but that was not the impression she got from their conversation that night. In fact, he seemed more focused on schoolwork than she'd seen in his entire four years of high school combined.
His heart was racing, and he gripped Betty's waist a little tighter. He couldn't believe his luck of running into her under the mistletoe. He had the hugest crush on her all throughout high school. But between her childhood crush on Archie, her relationship with Jughead that crashed and burned, and then dating Trevor her senior year... He just never had the chance to ask her out. That didn't even address the fact that she was way out of his league. He noticed the way she gripped his shoulders and her flushed cheeks, so maybe he had a shot after all.
Betty started to lean in, determined to capture his lips in a kiss.
"We don't have to," Reggie confessed.
"I know." She continued forward. She found herself wanting to kiss him, rather than being forced to. If she was being honest with herself, she had a little bit of a crush on him senior year. But she was dating Trev. She thought the crush fizzled out, but seeing him tonight, the exact opposite was true.
Her lips almost brushed his when he turned his cheek, planting a kiss near the corner of her mouth instead.
He brought his lips close to her ear, and spoke low, just above a whisper. “I don’t want our first kiss to happen because we have to.” His brought his thumb up to her cheek and brushed her skin. “I could really see myself falling for you.”
She let out a shaky breath. “I bet you say that to all the girls.”
He pulled back and brought his hand up to caress her cheek, looking lovingly into her eyes. He spoke quietly, so only she could hear. “I’ve never said that to another girl, because I’ve never meant it before. Just with you, Betty.” He lowered his lips and placed a kiss to her cheek for the second time that night.
The phone in her hand buzzed, causing her to regrettably extract herself from his grip. She read over the message and her eyes went wide. “Shit! I need to go.” She spun around quickly and ran off to her room to get her coat. She had her arm in one sleeve and was struggling with the other as she returned to Reggie, still a little dazed from their interaction.
“I need to go take Ethel home. But I’ll see you when I get back.” This time, it was more of a direction instead of a question, and he found himself nodding.
She placed a brief kiss to his cheek and rushed off to get Ethel before the Swift left without them.
“Well, well. That was an interesting development,” Veronica said more towards herself than at Reggie.
He smirked. “I’m really glad I ran into you the other day, Ronnie.” He smiled to himself and went to track down a beer to calm his nerves.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Betty returned to their apartment, and noticed that the party had died down substantially in the time it took her to make sure Ethel got home safe. She dropped off her coat in her room and started to look for Reggie.
She went through the kitchen, the living room, the office, then their formal living room… and nothing. She looped back to the kitchen to find Veronica.
“Hey V. Have you seen Reggie?” Betty leaned her elbows on the counter.
“B, I never thought I’d see the day where you and Reggie would be an item.” Veronica tapped her fingernails on the counter.
“We’re not-”
“Yes, I know, you’re not an item,” she said, making quotations with her fingers. “Not yet anyways. Make no mistake, I approve.” She sent Betty a devilish smirk.
Betty let out a sigh. “So, have you seen him?”
Veronica pointed out towards their balcony. “He went outside right before you got home.”
Betty pulled her best friend into a hug, before turning around and heading towards the balcony.
“I expect many double dates in our future,” Veronica shouted after her.
Betty rolled her eyes and scooped up her cardigan from the back of the couch. She tugged it on and held it shut with one hand, not bothering to button it as she stepped onto the balcony.
The sound of her closing the sliding door alerted Reggie of her presence.
He took the last swig of his beer and turned to face her. “Hey mini Cooper.” He smirked and took in the sight of her.
She laughed and took a few steps towards him. “Hey Reggie.”
“Aren’t you cold?” He pointed at her clothing, or lack thereof. She had on a thin cardigan and her legs were bare past the very short length of her dress.
She walked the rest of the way towards him on the balcony, stopping right in front of him. She plucked the beer bottle out of his hand and set it on the ledge. She placed a tentative hand on his chest. “You see, I know this guy. He puts up this tough exterior, and truthfully, I used to think he was a jerk, sometimes… but secretly he has a heart of gold. I figured he might offer to keep a girl warm,” she suggested.
He brought his arms around her waist and pulled her flush against his chest. “Yeah, I think I know that guy. He had a huge crush on you all throughout high school,” he said sincerely.
Betty’s eyes went wide before softening her expression into a tender smile. “You did not.”
He brought his hands over her arms, rubbing them up and down to generate some heat for her. “Yeah, I did. And I never thought a girl like you would give me the time of day. You’re out of my league,” he said solemnly.
She brought her hands to circle around his neck and inched herself closer. “Well if you remember anything about me, you know I don’t like people making decisions for me.”
He nodded. “Trust me, I remember. The next move is yours, Betty.”
Betty looked up at him through her lashes, thankful for the first time that night that she was wearing heels. All she had to do was tilt up slightly to capture his lips in a kiss. Her eyes flitted from his eyes to his lips, and back up again.
The kindness and sincerity in his eyes is what made her decision for her. She smiled slyly and leaned in to press a kiss firmly on his lips. He smiled into the kiss and thought how perfectly their lips fit together and how right he felt when he was with her. She threaded her fingers through his hair and swiped her tongue across his bottom lip asking for access. He granted it and pulled her tighter, his hands splaying across her back. She hummed happily into the kiss, only pulling away once their kiss left her breathless.
He rested his forehead against hers and brought his hand up to caress her cheek. “Wow,” he whispered against her lips.
She smiled brightly. “Yeah,” she agreed.
“So, what now?”
Her hands played with the hair at the nape of his neck, his eyes closing at the sensation. “Pick me up at seven tomorrow?”
He smiled and reconnected their lips in a sweet kiss. “Now that, I can arrange.”
She smiled into the kiss. “It’s a date.”
