Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (Switch)

Let me start out by saying I’m a huge fan of Castelvania: Symphony of the Night and it’s no secret that bloodstained draws a lot of inspiration from that classic.  The similarities are for sure there and 505 Games gets most of it right.

I played the Nintendo Switch version of this game, I’ll go ahead and get that out of the way.  If any of you have done research on this game, you’ve no doubt heard that this game suffered from some technical difficulties at launch and im hear to tell you that’s no longer the case!.......kinda.  I didn’t play this game before the patches rolled out so i can’t say for certain what has been fixed, but from what I’ve seen a lot has been optimized since then.  Depending on who you are however,  It’s possible that not enough have been optimized.  The graphics are still not the best, some of the load times are inexcusable and I still suffered frequent frame rate drops when the screen got too full.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s discuss the game.  Bloodstained it a faithul adaptation of the Castlevania series. My biggest praises from Symphony of the Night are still there.  This game boasts a huge amount of monsters to slay and weapons to collect, but wait there’s more!  Bloodstained introduces a new form of attributes to apply to your character called shards.  Your character is what’s known in this world as a Shardbinder, which means she has the ability to absorb shards from the demons she fights and gain their powers to use in the form of mana draining spells.  This is incredibly creative and was a blast to play with.  You can equip multiple shards to your character at once allowing for tons of possible builds and ways to play the game.

Just like any metroidvania this game also has lots of secrets to collect and reasons to backtrack the large map.  You’ll notice I’m giving this game a lot of praise for how it faithfully sticks to the metroidvania genre, and that is defintely true!  The problem is, if you’re looking for something new to the genre you’re going to have to look elsewhere.  It’s a lot of fun to play and explore but it’s nothing you haven’t seen before if you’re a fan of the series.  And maybe that’s good!  Maybe you’re just looking for more of the same to scratch that metroidvania itch because Konami refuses to port Symphony of the night over.  If that’s the case then I’m willing to bet you’d love Bloodstained, if you can get past the technical issues that is.

All in all Bloodstained symphony of the night is a great game with a lot to offer if you’re looking for more metroidvania and you can get past the technical issues.  I got this game for $20 and was overall happy with my purchase.  But really there’s no excuse for the lack of optimization in this game when Mario Odyssey also runs on this system with no problems.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is an action RPG by Koji Igarashi. You play as Miriam who has the power of crystal shards coursing through her body. Battle through a demon-infested castle and defeat its master to save yourself, and all of humanity!⁣ ⁣ Bloodstained follows the tried and true Symphony of the Night approach. Various weapons behave differently and a large selection of armor and accessories allow one to create exciting builds. I mostly used the sword, but enjoyed the Spear and Whip. The Shard system is the best part of the game. Almost every enemy has an ability which can be used once their shard has been obtained. Some are silly, others are incredibly powerful. I loved the way Miriam voiced each spell with fervor.⁣ ⁣ While some might criticize the cartoon / cell shaded visuals and slightly low res textures, I found the characters, environments, enemies and spell effects to be wonderful. Bright, saturated colors are everywhere and fit the gothic horror theme. Miriam’s and Gebel’s design are top notch.⁣ ⁣ Michiru Yamane, Keisuke Ito and Ryusuke Fujioka composed many pleasing and beautiful tracks in ROTN. “Lost Garden”, “Gears of Fortune”, “Forgotten Jade”, “Autumn’s Desolation”, “Theme of Gebel”, “Theme of Johanes”, “The Executioners” and “Silent Howling” all deserve a listen.⁣ ⁣ I enjoyed my time with Bloodstained. If you’re in the mood for a Castlevania style game, there is plenty of content, customization and challenge to keep you occupied for quite some time. Digital Trax - Episode V⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Tracks: "Theme of Johannes", "Gears of Fortune" and "Forgotten Jade" ⁣⁣ Composers: Keisuke Ito, Ryusuke Fujioka and Michiru Yamane⁣ ⁣ Bloodstained Ritual of the Night has excellent music. These three are some of my favorites so far. Theme of Johannes has a regal touch that's catchy, poignant and full of aristocracy. Gears of Fortune is downright wicked, full stop. Love the violin and fantastic tempo. Forgotten Jade is soothing, peaceful and mysterious.
