Preservation Of Soul by Pratik Risbud
“As the savage commonly explains the processes of inanimate nature by supposing that they are produced by living beings working in or behind the phenomena, so he explains the phenomena of life itself. If an animal lives and moves, it can only be, he thinks, because there is a little animal inside which moves it: if a man lives and moves, it can only be because he has a little man or animal inside who moves him. The animal inside the animal, the man inside the man, is the soul. And as the activity of an animal or man is explained by the presence of the soul, so the repose of sleep or death is explained by its absence; sleep or trance being the temporary, death being the permanent absence of the soul. Hence if death be the permanent absence of the soul, the way to guard against it is either to prevent the soul from leaving the body, or, if it does depart, to ensure that it shall return. The precautions adopted by savages to secure one or other of these ends take the form of certain prohibitions or taboos, which are nothing but rules intended to ensure either the continued presence or the return of the soul. In short, they are life-preservers or life-guards.” - James George Frazer, ‘The Golden Bough: A Study in Magic and Religion’ (1890)

“The carvings are only a sample of 1,200 figures that Mr. Risbud and Dhananjay Marathe, engineers and dedicated naturalists, have uncovered since they set out on a quest in 2012. The two men are part of a long tradition of amateur archaeologists, according to Tejas Garge, the head of the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums for the state of Maharashtra, and the petroglyphs they have uncovered amount to a trove of international significance.“

In the late 1980s whilst cycling around his neighbourhood, Sudhir Risbud recalled seeing as a schoolboy a strange and enigmatic rock relief pattern just off the road near the village of Niwali, 15 km from Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. The mesmerising pattern caught his attention, with the strange geometric shapes, interlocking curls and concentric circles, and this relief seemingly cut short prematurely by the recent road construction. At the time he had absolutely no idea that what he was seeing was a prehistoric petroglyph, although he did know that the local tribal people identified it as a legacy from their ancestors and treated it with reverence In the following 25 years Sudhir and his colleagues identified more examples of these strange rock carvings, but it wasn’t until a historian accompanied them on one of their trips that they finally learned the significance of their discoveries. Six years later, and as of January 2019 there have been 52 confirmed and explored sites, and over 1,000 petroglyphs discovered. An ongoing project to visit local schools is underway, not just to learn of potential new sites, but also to educate the children on the significance of these petroglyphs and how they need to be identified, recorded and protected in the landscape. The majority of the petroglyph sites are in quite remote locations, away from villages on the laterite plateaux. They are believed to date to the mesolithic and neolithic period, potentially as far back as 10,000 B.C.E. However, the lack of material culture associated with these petroglyphs has thus far prevented us from making any firm conclusions. What struck me when visiting these sites is the huge variety of carvings they have. Some sites have clear and obvious depictions of animals such as elephant, rhino, buffalo, pig, tiger, deer, rabbit, varieties of bird, aquatic animals (fish, sharks, stingray), and humans – often life size, while other sites have abstract geometric patterns that are often incredibly complex and symmetrical. Some of the animals depicted have not roamed the Konkan for at least 10,000 years. #swiggywala @googlemaps #petroglypth #prehistoric #rockart #archaeology #maharashtra #konk https://www.instagram.com/p/CbpH2OXPXbL/?utm_medium=tumblr

#BanSunburn Protest Emerges Ahead of Major Indian Festival
Coming up on Sunburn‘s hopeful return to Goa, #BanSunburn has been trending in India. It seems there are many protesters out there who believe the electronic music festival is a sure gateway to drug use.
The fest, set to take place on December 27 – 29, has experienced a rough few years. Following the 2016 installment, the festival was relocated from Goa to Pune, a city nearly 300 miles away. And the issues only continued to accumulate in 2017 and 2018.
This it’s the first time the #BanSunburn hashtag has been used either. Some of the tweets date back to 2017. If you feel so moved to speak your opinion either way on the issue, now would be the time.
With The Chainsmokers, Flume, Martin Garrix, and many more leading electronic acts on the lineup, this could be Sunburn’s year to bounce back. That is, if the #BanSunburn movement subsides.
