I’m obsessed with the fact that we get this from Chapter 27 of Iron Flame:

“I’m not mad at you for not being hurt. I would never want you hurt. I’m pissed at myself for being so reckless, so wrapped up in you, having such little control over my emotions that I just ran after you like…like…” Like a lovesick little fool. “And you, you’re always calm, collected, and in control. You would have waited for all the information, and you sure as hell never, ever would have let Sgaeyl’s emotions take over—” (…) “I’m not always calm or collected, and I’m never in control when it comes to you.” (…) “I would have done the same thing you did because I’m just as reckless for you as you are for me.”

And these snippets from Xaden’s POV of Chapter 27 in Fourth Wing:

“Yes, why are you here?” Sgaeyl doesn’t disguise the mockery in her tone. (…) “It was your idea to bring the daggers.” I’m careful to only speak down Sgaeyl’s bond. “It seemed a prudent course of action, considering your insufferable intolerance of being away from the general’s daughter.” She huffs.

Can We Talk About Xaden's Favorite Food

Listen I don't care if it's been said before! I will never get over the fact that his favorite food is chocolate cake! It is probably the best part of the entire series. For context Xaden Riorson is 6'5, has a a sleeve tattoo, is the leader of a rebellion, essentially the king of a nation, one of the most powerful dragon riders of his generation, his entire personalty is that he's a strong sexy manly man with secrets and trauma, he fucked the daughter of the woman who carved 107 scars into his back, he lifted a grown man in the air with one arm because he hurt his girlfriend, he can literally wield darkness! And his favorite food is chocolate cake! ... I love it. Rebecca Yarros is fucking genius.

It’s taken me way too long to appreciate the symbolism behind Xaden’s scars.

The scars for the Marked Ones are on his back, because he carries the weight of their lives, choices and loyalty on his shoulders.

And the scar for Violet is over his heart, because he’s vouching for the woman who holds it.

Me: It’s been months since IF came out. I’ve read it so many times that I’m totally desensitized to the feels.

IF:

(I) step out of formation and walk past Andarna and Feirge, over the trampled grass, straight to Xaden. The scruff on his jaw is thick with days of growth, and there are circles under his eyes as he reaches forward, surprising me by tugging me against his chest in front of all of Fourth Wing. The cold beard tickles as he buries his icy face in my neck and breathes deeply. “I’ve missed you.” “Same.” I wind my arms around his torso, sliding my hands in the space between the swords he wears crossed at his back and his flight jacket, then hold tight to help warm him.

In one of the next Empyrean books, I’d love to see an alternate reality (in the form of a dream/illusion/hallucination/whatever) in which Violet joined the Scribe Quadrant on Conscription Day.

I don’t even care what events transpire, as long as somehow Violet and Xaden still find each other, to highlight the inevitability of Riongail being endgame.

If it’s Xaden having the dream, I can almost see him going about his daily life with the nagging feeling that there’s something wrong. Something missing. But he continues as normal. Until he sees Violet. Then he can’t get her out of his head. And it would be adorable because Xaden is a freaking marshmallow in all possible realities when it comes to Violet.

Anyway, Riongail has my entire heart.

Watched an interview today where RY pretty much guaranteed Violet’s “happy ending” but wouldn’t comment on Xaden’s future. If you ask me, Violet can only have a happy ending if Xaden is in it, so I’m choosing to believe he’ll make it out alive and well. Riongail is endgame, and I refuse to entertain the alternatives. Using this scene to put good vibes into the universe.

Xaden meets me between Tairn and Sgaeyl, a scenario that reminds me entirely too much of Resson. He reaches for me, his warm hand cupping the back of my neck. “I love you. The world does not exist for me beyond you.” Leaning down, he rests his forehead against mine. “I couldn’t tell you that the last time we flew into a fight, and I should have.” “I love you, too.” I grasp his waist and force a smile. “Do me a favor and don’t die. I don’t want to live without you.” There are so many of them and so few of us. “We don’t die today.” “If only we all felt that kind of certainty,” I try to joke. “You keep your focus on the enemy and your life.” He kisses me hard and quick. “Even Malek himself couldn’t keep me from you.”
