𝐁IOGRAPHY
Life was always quite noisy for Hugo growing up. The packed city, angry household, and every outlet available fed a sort of chaos. Had he known anything different, he might have felt near suffocated. Instead, Hugo followed the pace of the world spread out before him. The family who found him. Who made him.
Jaenan. The calamity. His very nature seemed to mirror their chaotic reality. Contained by leaders of various levels and their orders. The boundary of one island to the next. The first time he left home was when that sound quieted, just for one night, and he would forever chase that feeling.
It would cost him. Bloodshed, darkness, and so much death, all building to one great roar. Maddening, ear splitting, wrenching. Till it all just stopped. Once an orphan, now home. Among the Shinto pantheon. Life here wasn't perfect, but Hugo knew violence. War. Family. He could do the same here, but at long last on his own terms. At his own pace. Without time and foolish leaders dragging him by a short leash. For their own ends.
Hugo committed, immediately, to the cause. The Shinto. His father, a true calamity, a force, but a misunderstood one. There was much to prove, to control and learn, but he found more of himself in every challenge. Even the ones that hurt; a cut to himself or the loss of a brother.
The Shinto cause was his own, until relationships began to be built between other pantheons. Hugo remained loyal, but recalled his want for change so long ago. He knew well enough not to fear it. To listen. To try. If only to learn more of this world that remained far better than that he'd left. Even with the sacrifices.
Hugo carried his own interests, but offered all of himself to the ark project. Build a home for themselves to break tradition and find a new way. To fight. To live. Only after Sugaru's interjection was the last six months of progress all but abandoned. His wild action led to the worst consequence as he became the god hunter's captive.
Tortured, mutilated, it was Forest and company who ended his war. Returned Hugo to freedom. The fighter reflects on his entire life now, rather than the future. Neither nature or knowledge could carry him that far. After ten years, he really thought he would be the victor. So righteous. He fears that this wont be the last time he learns such a terrible lesson.

Authenticity comes at the high price of social failure and so poet goes scurrying back into pen and paper, drawing lines of exhaustion upon his own undereyes, and co-existing in observance of the world rather than with it. He is both too close and too removed all at once. He is both beauty and tragedy all at once. Though, through the nihilism peaks a glimmer of optimism—only under the tarp of late-night rambles on the back porch with those who can keep up—or, rather, stay patient, with him long enough.
This muse is in development and is available for new plots.

Netflix Debuts a Bloated, Baffling Post-Strike SAG Awards Telecast
The 2024 SAG Awards allegedly only ran ten minutes over its two-hour time slot on Saturday, but it felt a whole lot longer.
Unlike most awards shows, the SAG Awards and other guild ceremonies award winners only in their respective discipline, but that didn't make the telecast more efficient or memorable in any way. While the room full of nominees and winners were endlessly thankful to their union and outside solidarity during the strikes, the telecast failed to sufficiently honor the talent on display in a worthy manner - that too on the show's 30th anniversary.
And it was no ordinary SAG Awards year for another obvious reason; the telecast aired live on Netflix for the first time ever (including pre-show hosted by Tan France and Elaine Welteroth). Netflix is one of the only streamers that doesn't dabble in live TV, so teaming up with the SAG Awards was both surprising and smart. The world's most ubiquitous streaming platform could prove that it does traditional TV as well, and that it could be a home for other awards shows looking to reach new audiences worldwide.
It also meant no commercial breaks, as Idris Elba pointed out at the top of show (he commended anyone smart enough to bring a flask, which led to a brilliant cutaway of Rhea Perlman offering hers to Lisa Ann Walter) - at least not in the traditional sense. Instead, France returned in between awards to interview previous winners backstage, starting with Jeremy Allen White after his win for "The Bear." Despite being an inventive alternative to traditional commercial breaks, this creative decision killed the telecast's momentum early in the night and it never recovered.
The decision to include post-win interview might stem from how such clips tend to perform on social media during or after other awards shows, but making viewers sit through the entirety of every interview is not the way. It places extra pressure on both interviewer and winner to perform - to deliver a winning interview that's not being watched by its usual discerning audience, and further still to manufacture viral moments in the haze of earning an award (a height achieved only by Pedro Pascal's drunk interview, where flirted with France, declared his plans to make out with Kieran Culkin, and was finally interrupted by a hug from Steven Yeun, who came to return Pascal's envelope from the stage). If nothing else, it was constant whiplash for viewers to essentially jump back several categories for an interview with a winner who already accepted their award.
It also didn't happen for everyone! Netflix aired France's interviews with White, Ayo Edibiri, Pascal, and Da'Vine Joy Randolph, and then a baffling interview with Walter - a fantastic actor and part of the exceptional "Abbott Elementary" ensemble, but neither actor nor show won during the show. It turned out to be part of an extended bit where Walter revealed that there was a camera following her all night, recording every conversation - a bit that yielded close to zero entertainment, despite Walter's best efforts.
This was unfortunately a pattern throughout the telecast. SAG took a leaf from the 50th Emmys in January, by uniting iconic casts on stage, including the winning TV ensembles of "Modern Family" and "Breaking Bad" and mini-reunions for "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Devil Wears Prada" (an easy high in the night that took place less than ten minutes into the show). Elsewhere, paired presenters plowed through stilted, scripted banter, all of which could have been trimmed down or sped up in the best interest of everyone watching. White noted "Wow, they give you a lot of time at this one," during his acceptance speech before gracefully exiting the stage. Heck, even Barbra Streisand's heartfelt and well-deserved tribute dragged - and clocked in at close to 20 minutes.
But as awards seasons ramps for its final act, the SAGs are the final tee-up for the Oscars, and Saturday's winners certainly pointed the way of major predictions. The supporting actors awards went to Robert Downey Jr. ("Oppenheimer) and Da'Vine Joy Randolph ("The Holdovers") and the lead actor awards to Cillian Murphy ("Oppenheimer") and Lily Gladstone ("Killers of the Flower Moon"). The award for Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture went to "Oppenheimer," proving that all eyes will be on Christopher Nolan's blockbusting drama come March 10.
The 2024 Screen Actors’ Guild Awards were hostless – and pointless, too
Lack of presenters aside, the big novelty was that the SAG Awards were airing live on Netflix. The streamer has been dipping its digital digits into live broadcasts for several years: 12 months ago it broke new ground with a live Chris Rock comedy special (in which he flubbed his big joke about Will Smith slapping him at the Oscars).
With live broadcasts, of course, comes the headache of time-zones. In the UK, the SAG Awards kicked off at midnight – with the first 60 minutes consisting of yawn-inducing red carpet interviews by Tan France before the ceremony finally began.

Pedro Pascal accepts the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series - Matt Winkelmeyer© Provided by The Telegraph
The SAG Awards are organised by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and are thus a fountain of luvvydom. The 2024 event began with a trio of actors – Michael Cera, Colman Domingo and the ubiquitous Hannah Waddingham – walking through the crowd, explaining how and why they joined the profession.
They were followed by Idris Elba, the closest the night came to an actual host (he was back later with further jokes). He delivered a few playful quips and then got on to the meaty business of commending his colleagues for holding firm in their industrial dispute with the big Hollywood studios (and the streamers – including Netflix).
Winning a SAG Award clearly means a lot to the actors. Pedro Pascal revealed he was both drunk and astonished when collecting the accolade for Best Male Actor in a Drama Series for The Last Of Us – and was still agog in an awkward backstage interview/ambush by Tan France. Pascal’s joy was infectious – as was his tipsiness. Alas, it wasn’t enough to paper over the cracks in a ceremony lacking the gonzo absurdity of the Golden Globes or the blockbuster heft of the Oscars.
youtube
One SAG Award speciality is hosting on-stage reunions by the cast of beloved shows and movies. True to that tradition, the 2024 edition welcomed the stars of Modern Family and Breaking Bad – during the latter Jonathan Banks dropped one of several F-bombs sprinkled throughout the evening. “It’s an award show, for God’s sake, they can’t fire us. F--- ‘em,” he declared. Elsewhere, Barbra Streisand accepted a lifetime achievement award with charm and dignity – revealing a teenage crush on Marlon Brando was her portal into acting.
In the main, though, the event was an Oppenheimer victory lap. Robert Downey Jr collected his Best Supporting Actor statuette with a quirky speech in which he thanked everyone he has ever worked with (including the cancelled Mel Gibson). The Oppenheimer cast subsequently won an ensemble award. It was an opportunity for Kenneth Branagh – apparently he was in Oppenheimer – to debut his alarming new beard and again reference the actors’ strike. He seemed excited. The rest of us will wonder when the awards season phoney wars will finally end and we can proceed to the serious business of the actual Oscars. At the end of a long night, the real prize at the SAG Awards should surely go to viewers who stayed up for this snoozy extravaganza.

Idea for how to integrate Agents of SHIELD into the main MCU:
The miniseries is “Jimmy Woo: Former Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.”.
In this first episode, we start off with a flashback to 2010. We learn that before he joined the FBI, he was a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent working on the field. His real name is actually Woo Yen Jet. For this particular mission, Jet and a few other agents have been sent to Berlin, Germany in order to stop an arms deal between the Ten Rings and the Golden Claw Society, a South Korean crime syndicate and the main villainous faction of the series.
Jet is paired up with a still-alive Phil Coulson and Brock Rumlow. The plan was for their team to link up with the second team, which would lead into the main assault. The three S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, after some chit chat, eventually do link up with the second team, revealing that the second squad’s leader is Melinda May.
The S.H.I.E.L.D. agents stop the arms deal, but not before the Golden Claw leader issues a warning to Jet that he will remember this (foreshadowing for the rest of the series).
We then get a flashforward to 2014. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” happens, leaving S.H.I.E.L.D. in ruins. With every agent in danger, Melinda May tells Jet to go into hiding. Jet does so and starts a new life as Jimmy Woo, an ordinary FBI agent. This leads into a brief recap of “Ant-Man and the Wasp” and “WandaVision” before leading into the present day, where Jimmy is forced to reckon with his past when the Golden Claw Society reemerges from the shadows.
(Side note, if I had to cast the leader of the Golden Claw Society, I’d pick Steven Yeun. I want him to play a villain role for once)

Top 10 Hottest for June
The thirst continues.
Tex Sawyer (Viggo Mortensen, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III)
Tumblr media
He’s got that southern charm down to a T, and it works. I mean, he’d kill me, but he’d look good doing it.
Cybil Bennett (Laurie Holden, Silent Hill)
Tumblr media
Between the pixie cut and her incredible posture, I’m not sure which thing I find more attractive.
Ambrose Spellman (Chance Perdomo, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina)
Tumblr media
Gotta love the witty with a heart of gold type. Plus he’s pretty dedicated to people he cares about. V hot.
Jack Ferriman (Desmond Harrington, Ghost Ship)
Tumblr media
It should come as no surprise that I actually find him more attractive once we know why he’s there and he gets to doing what he’s supposed to do. Also transformation is hot.
Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun, The Walking Dead)
Tumblr media
That was my boy right there. I cannot tell y’all how upset I was when Negan did what he did.
Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts, The Ring)
Tumblr media
/chanting Milf Milf Milf Milf! She’s tenacious as hell and it’s very attractive.
Brent Ryan (Nicolas Cage, Mom and Dad)
Tumblr media
Okay, listen. He’s kind of a douche. But when he goes full chaos it spoke to me.
Long Haired Fiend (J. Larose, Insidious)
Tumblr media
I kept almost typing Long Haired Friend and that would be one of the more inaccurate things I’ve put up. What that tongue do tho?
Lirio (Assumpta Serna, The Craft)
Tumblr media
She’s mysterious but also seems to be a good person and that’s hot. Just offering advice to the only baby witch to not steal from her outright.
Marius de Romanus (Vincent Perez, Queen of the Damned)
Tumblr media
His character actually didn’t stick out that much to me beyond, “attractive man... man hot... hot hot leg...”

Oscar Trivia 2021
A few days late, but here we are!
The elephant in the room is that for the first time in Oscar history, there is more than one woman nominated in Best Director: Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) and Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman). As part of their unique roads to their nominations, Zhao is the first Asian woman nominated for the award, while Fennell is both the first British woman nominated and the first woman to be nominated for her directorial debut. If either of them win (which looks incredibly likely for Zhao), they will be only the second woman to win Best Director, joining Kathryn Bigelow who won for The Hurt Locker (2009).
The late Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) has become the eighth actor to be nominated posthumously and the first in the Best Actor category since Massimo Troisi in 1995 (Il Postino). If/when he wins, he’ll be the third actor to win after their death, joining Peter Finch (Best Actor 1976, Network) and Heath Ledger (Best Supporting Actor 2008, The Dark Knight).
In a continuation of the weirdest streak possible, Leslie Odom, Jr. (One Night in Miami) is the fourth artist in a row to be nominated for both acting and songwriting. For over 40 years, Barbra Streisand had the distinction of being the only person nominated for both acting and songwriting. Mary J. Blige one-upped her in 2017 when she was nominated in both categories in the same year (Mudbound), and then Lady Gaga (A Star is Born) and Cynthia Erivo (Harriet) managed to do the same in the following years. Odom is now the fifth person to achieve this distinction in Oscar history and the first man to do so. Barbra still has the last laugh, though: she’s still the only person to win both categories (albeit in different years).
Steven Yeun (Minari) is the first Asian-American actor ever nominated in the Best Actor category and the third male Asian-American actor nominated ever, joining the ranks of former Supporting Actor nominees Mako and Pat Morita.
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’s Maria Bakalova is the first Bulgarian actor nominated for an Oscar.
With her Best Actress nomination for Nomdland, Frances McDormand has joined Meryl Streep, Jack Nicholson, Laurence Olivier, and Michael Caine as actors nominated in five consecutive decades. Additionally, as one of the producers of Nomadland, McDormand is the first woman nominated in acting and producing in the same year and the third overall (the other two being Barbra Streisand and Oprah Winfrey).
Glenn Close (Hillbilly Elegy) received her eighth nomination, extending her own record as the most nominated living actor without a win. She is also the third actor to be nominated for both an Oscar and a Razzie for the same performance, and the first since 1983.
Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah) is the first Black British actor to receive more than one Oscar nomination. If he wins (which looks incredibly likely), he’ll be the first ever Black British actor to win an Oscar.
With her nomination for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Viola Davis is now the most nominated Black actress in Oscar history, with four nominations and one win. If she wins, she’ll be only the second Black woman to win a Leading Actress Oscar and the first since Halle Berry, who won for 2001′s Monster’s Ball.
Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal) is the first actor to Pakistani descent to be nominated in any acting category and the first Muslim actor nominated in Best Actor. His performance is also the first one primarily in American Sign Language (ASL) nominated in this category since Alan Arkin in 1968′s The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. Additionally, Ahmed is one of the only actors of color in Oscar history to be nominated for a role in which his race has no bearing on the story.
Youn Yuh-jung (Minari) is the first Korean actor nominated for an acting Oscar and the third East Asian woman nominated (the others being Japanese actresses Rinko Kikuchi and Miyoshi Umeki).
This year also marks the second time ever with more than one Black nominee in Best Actress, with both Viola Davis (Ma Rainey) and Andra Day (The United States vs. Billie Holiday). The only other time this happened was in 1972 when both Cicely Tyson (Sounder) and Diana Ross (Lady Sings the Blues) were nominated. In an incredible coincidence, both Ross and Day are nominated for playing the same role: Billie Holiday.
Between the five of them, the films nominated in Best Visual Effects have a total of seven nominations, the lowest for that category since 2007, when there were only three films nominated.
On that same note, Billie Holiday is now the sixth historical figure to earn multiple actors Oscar nominations in different films. The others are King Henry VIII (Charles Laughton in 1933′s The Private Life of Henry VIII, Robert Shaw in 1966′s A Man for All Seasons, and Richard Burton in 1969′s Anne of the Thousand Days), Queen Elizabeth I (Cate Blanchett in 1998′s Elizabeth and 2007′s Elizabeth: The Golden Age and Judi Dench in 1998′s Shakespeare in Love), Abraham Lincoln (Raymond Massey in 1940′s Abe Lincoln in Illinois and Daniel Day-Lewis in 2012′s Lincoln), Howard Hughes (Jason Robards in 1980′s Melvin and Howard and Leonardo DiCaprio in 2004′s The Aviator), and Richard Nixon (Anthony Hopkins in 1995′s Nixon and Frank Langella in 2008′s Frost/Nixon). Holiday is the first Black person to receive this distinction.
At 83, Anthony Hopkins (The Father) is the oldest Best Actor nominee in Oscar history. He is also the first person to get back-to-back acting nominations in his 80s and only the third actor in history to receive more than one acting nomination in his 80s, joining the likes of Jessica Tandy and Christopher Plummer.
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom marks the third time ever that Best Actor and Best Actress both have Black nominees from the same film. The other two are Sounder (1972, with Paul Winfield and Cicely Tyson) and What’s Love Got to Do with It (1993, with Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett). Of the three films, only Sounder made it into the Best Picture category.
Judas and the Black Messiah is the first Best Picture nominee with an all-Black producing team.
Thomas Vinterberg scored a surprise Best Director nomination for Another Round, which makes him the first Danish filmmaker to receive an Oscar nomination. Another Round is now only the third film in history to be nominated for Best DIrector and no other non-Foreign Language Film categories, along with Hiroshi Teshigahara’s Woman in the Dunes (1965) and Federico Fellini’s Fellini Satyricon (1970).
Amanda Seyfried (Mank) is the second Mean Girl to be nominated for an Oscar, joining Rachel McAdams. None for Gretchen Weiners, indeed.
With the nominations for Maria Bakalova and for Adapted Screenplay, Borat becomes the eighth film franchise to ever receive multiple nominations in above-the-line Oscar categories, joining The Godfather series, the Toy Story series, the Before... series, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Rocky/Creed series, and the pairs of Going My Way/The Bells of St. Mary’s and Elizabeth/Elizabeth: The Golden Age.
After the Macedonian film Honeyland became the first film in Oscar history to be nominated in both Best International Feature and Best Documentary Feature, the Romanian documentary Collective became the second film to earn this distinction this year.
The White Tiger continues the 20-year-old trend of there being at least one film that receives a screenplay nomination and nothing else.
Terence Blanchard (Da 5 Bloods) is the first Black composer to receive multiple nominations.
Sound of Metal is the third Best Picture nominee in the last 20 years to have its world premiere the year before its American Oscar-qualifying release. The other two are Best Picture winners The Hurt Locker (which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2008) and Crash (which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2004).
Mank is the third black-and-white film to be nominated in Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and the first since Ed Wood in 1994.
This is only the third time that all five of the Best Actor nominees were nominated alongside co-stars. This previously happened in 1991 and 2013.

⤷ ( noah. gmt. 22. they/them. ) the courts offer bread and salt to SUNHWA of HOUSE TARGARYEN. many say that the THIRTY EIGHT year old PERSONAL GUARD of RHAELLA TARGARYEN is known to be STEADY FOOTED and JUSTICE DRIVEN, though ill tongues whisper that HE/THEY is HIDING SOMETHING and UNYIELDING. when his name is uttered, one is reminded of bloody footprints, white scars, battle-worn gaze, a smile trapped around a scream, the inability to watch injustice even as you mourn the collatoral damage, the desire to sink into the dust and let the mountains claim you but a death knell rings and you are determined that it won’t be for your country but for your king. may they be blessed and protected in this war of crowns. tldr ; SUNHWA MIN is the personal guard of the princess rhaella targaryen. Originally a simple castle guard, he watched in horror as the country descended once more into chaos, and promised to himself to get close to the leadership to see it change into healing hands once more - no matter the cost.

YOON EUNJAE (윤은재, HE/HIM) has zero external enthusiasm, but makes up for his apparent apathy with some stellar performances. even after two years of being in 'the company's basement', eunjae's patience is seemingly endless. he believes that his debut will come at the right time. for now, he'll have to put up with a redhead and the nicest rookie he's ever encountered in this company.

SEONG DASOM (성다솜, SHE/HER) rise and grind has been her motto even before it became a trend. friends with half the company, from staff to trainees!! even then, it doesn't kill her spirit at all, and she continues to work even after getting high praise. there's always room for improvement, even after two years of training at this company. take that, kq and jyp! two years each, and you couldn't knock 'em out!

CHIBA FUJIMORI (千葉藤森, ANY/ALL) one of the newer trainees who joined a few months ago. despite having lived in south korea for a year, adjusting is still difficult. friends are hard to make. language barriers are only being chipped away. at least this one girl was nice enough to try, and... maybe she actually likes them? they don't exactly know. at least there's somebody...

Mun Yeun from my story L’Arche du Bonheur - [ENG] Hapiness Land - (which I created while playing The Sims 4).
He’s an orphan boy who has been adopted by Kate. He loves his mom and his siblings very much. Amy is his best friend ♥
Music, music, music. This passion was passed on to him by his mother and later, he’ll become a fantastic musican. He can play violin, guitar and his favourite instrument, piano.
At first, Mun found it difficult to assume his homosexuality but with Carlos love and his family’s support he'll end up succeeding.
Very handsome, he loves wearing long coat in wool or rings in his fingers.

Why does my internal motivation seem to hate posting on Saturdays so much? But regardless, you guys ARE getting two posts this weekend! Hurray! Hopefully, these will lift your spirits at least a little during these nutsy times. Also, get ready for a long-ish description for this drawing because I feel it deserves it. This is a bit of a special sketch for me, not only because it features my current-favourite-ship-ever, but also because it was inspired by a certain song. A song which is basically KeithxZuri in a nutshell, and thus a song that I have personally dubbed “DA KEIRI SONG”. Yes, in all caps. Because I’m extra and because, seriously, it’s a beautifully fitting song. The song is, as you might’ve guessed from the title of this sketch, Shelter by Ray Lamontagne, but SPECIFICALLY, the cover version by Steven Yeun. And if that name rings a bell, THEN IT SHOULD! BECAUSE IT’S KEITH’S VOICE ACTOR! That’s right! The VA for half of this ship sang a beautiful cover of this song (not to mention played it on the guitar) (can I just take a moment to acknowledge the fact that Steven Yeun has the voice of an angel?) (oh, and I totally headcanon that Keith can play the guitar now!), this song which is beyond-a-doubt the theme song for this ship. Can you see now why I found this song so fitting that I had to make a drawing based off of it?!?! And why I hope to write a fanfic based on it too?!?! Now, given my huge-ass list of fanfic ideas, I can’t make any promises on the fanfic front, but I will try my darndest to write this one! And I will attempt to fill it with feels, hurt/comfort goodness and romantic softness out the wazoo! Now, I could end this description here, buuuuttt I wanna wax poetic a bit longer on why I find this song so damn fitting for my precious emo babus, as well as touch on why I drew them like this, soooooo I’m gonna! XD Firstly, I’m just quickly going to share the lyrics of the song to you guys so you all know what I’m talking about during my poetic waxing (also, here’s a link to the cover so you can fully appreciate Steven Yeun’s blessed rendition of this song: https://youtu.be/k6wDOi2HrsI): I guess you don’t need it I guess you don’t want me to repeat it But everything I have to give I give to you It’s not like we planned it You tried to stay but you could not stand it To see me shot down slow as though it wasn’t an easy thing to do Listen well All of this around us will fall over I’ll tell you what we’re gonna do You will shelter me, my love, and I will shelter you I will shelter you I left you heartbroken But not until those very words were spoken Has anybody ever made such a fool outta you? It’s hard to believe it Even as my eyes don’t perceive it The very things that make you live are killing you Listen well All of this around us will fall over I’ll tell you what we’re gonna do You will shelter me, my love, and I will shelter you I will shelter you Alright, so you all know this song now? Good! Now why is this song so fitting for keiri, you might be wondering if you weren’t one of those to whom I’ve rambled about keiri in private chats and therefor know more about this ship than most of my followers? Allow me to enlighten you!!! The song seems, at least in my interpretation, to be about a couple who’s facing difficulties, but that still love each other, and the narrator/singer affirms this love and this commitment and devotion they and the person they’re singing about/their partner have. It’s like the whole message of this song is “This isn’t going to be easy, but it’s going to be worth it, and even if everything else goes to shit, I know you still love me and I sure as heck still love you, and that’s what matters”. At least, that’s how I interpret it, and I know it might not be the original intended meaning, but that’s the meaning I get from this song. And this message pretty much describes how Keith and Zuri get together in most of my headcanons, including my main headcanon, which is the storyline I would write if I were in charge of VLD and had to make it a show. See, Keiri isn’t a fast-burn romance. I wouldn’t call it a slow-burn either, because I’m a bit too impatient to make it a slow-burn (I prefer couples being together over the process of them getting together), but the point is that they don’t get together immediately. The biggest reason for that is because of their emotional baggage. Keith, as we know, has trust issues and fears getting rejected and hurt by people he cares about. Zuri, for her part, is still stuck in the grieving process for the many losses she went through in her life and she fears that, if she gets close to someone again, they’ll just end up dying in the war just like pretty much everyone she cared deeply about in her life until this point. Nonetheless, they end up forming a bond and grow to deeply care about each other. It gets to the point where Keith trusts Zuri, views her as a close friend and even likes the idea of being in an intimate relationship with her (it helps that, yes, he finds her attractive). On Zuri’s side, it’s much the same: she trusts Keith, she’s attracted to Keith, she enjoys his company, she finds that she’s closer to him than she is with anyone, and the idea of being in a relationship with him does appeal to her very much. But it also scares her. All of the things I just said about how she views Keith scares her. Because what if something happens to him? What if he gets injured or worse in the war? What if it claims his life as well as the lives of everyone else she’s opened her heart to? Then all the pain of loss that she’s been trying to numb herself to and supress all these years will come crashing back, maybe even worse than before! So, even as she and Keith grow closer throughout their “courtship” period, she’s trying the whole time to keep a distance between them, to subtly push Keith away, to prevent him from getting too close, to keep from letting him in entirely. But Keith realizes what she’s doing. I mean, it’s hard for him not to: it’s what he’s been doing for years. And he knows first-hand how lonely and sad this kind of self-isolation feels, not to mention how unhealthy it is! BTW: I just want to note that, at this time, he’s forming closer bonds with the other paladins and getting a truly supportive found-family/support system, even though all that stuff with the BoM is still on his mind. I just wanted to say that he is in a better headspace by now. Still not perfect, but better than at the start of the show. So, yeah, he recognizes what Zuri’s trying to do and he knows that it’s not okay. So, he confronts her about it, which does get her to reveal what she’s going through and to admit that, yes, she’s been trying to push him (and the other paladins, I might add) away because she’s so terrified of the pain that losing him (and them) will cause her. And Keith is understanding, but also more determined than ever. He lets her know that he understands why she’s doing this, to avoid pain, but it’s going to cause more harm than good and it’s just going to hurt her in the long-run and he doesn’t want her to go through that hurt. He understands that she’s scared and that she has reason to be scared (they are fighting a war, after all) and that, honestly, he’s scared of losing his loved ones too. Hell, he did lose a loved one, his father, years ago, and it does still pain him. But that doesn’t make him wish he’d never loved his father. Similarly, his fear of losing the paladins doesn’t make him love them any less, and his fear of losing Zuri doesn’t make him not love her. It just makes him want to make the very most of his time with her. He tells her that he’s there for her, that no matter what she does, he’s not going to stop caring about her, and he knows that she cares about him too. He doesn’t push this part too much, though, thankfully. He respects Zuri too much to try coaxing her into the relationship that, let’s face it, they both know she wants. He’s ready and willing to be with her, but only if she is. It’s got to be mutual and, if she decides that she just isn’t ready to face her fear or that loving him is worth the pain that it could bring, he’ll be sad as hell but he’ll respect that. Thankfully, though, Zuri, after given a bit of time to think it over, does choose to stop living in fear and letting it cause her so much internalized and supressed heartache and misery and loneliness. So, even though it scares the shit out of her, she confesses her feelings for Keith and they finally get together. Of course, they still have their own issues and their problems don’t go away with them getting into a relationship. But the fact that they’ve found someone they can be open with, someone who they know will support them and love them throughout all of the trials life can offer, does make things easier. They are each other’s shelter in the storm of life, so to speak: not making the storm go away, but making it easier to bear as they get through it. And that, kids, is why I effin’ love my ship and why this song (particularly this version of the song) is their theme song! Also, I think that’s a long enough description for you! If you read the whole thing, you earn a gold star and a cookie! REFERENCES: None to be had except the character designs! Event Report: Rhode Island Comic Con 2019
Tumblr media
The eighth annual Rhode Island Comic Con took place November 1-3 at the Rhode Island Convention Center and the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, RI. With the new layout implemented the previous year proving to be successful, the show ran like a well-oiled machine. When not enamored by the countless vendors, I spent a good deal of the weekend in the panel rooms listening to anecdotes from a host of beloved actors.
The first panel of the weekend was with The Office's Brian Baumgartner (who played Kevin) and Leslie David Baker (who played Stanley). After being forced to turn away dozens of fans from last year's The Office Q&A with other cast members, the convention smartly booked the bigger panel room this time around. They discussed the show's longevity and the possibility of a revival. "It will never be the same," Baker stated, but they remain open to the idea; he encouraged fans to write to NBC if they want to see it. Many laughs were had, with Baumgartner occasionally slipping into his character’s voice, in addition to dropping not one but two "That's what she said!" jokes.
Tumblr media
Richard Dreyfuss' panel immediately followed. The Academy Award-winning actor opened by saying that he has answered every Jaws question over the years, so if you ask one he hasn't heard he'll give you $10 - but if you ask one he has heard you owe him $10. He promised more than just funny stories from film sets - although that's what most people wanted to hear. More than half of the 45-minute discussion was dedicated to the absence of civics in today's educational system, a subject on which Dreyfuss wrote a soon-to-be-published book. He did answer a few film-related questions, but the moderator - a local podcast host - did not help the situation.
A Q&A with Freddy Krueger himself, Robert Englund, was a fun way to cap off the first day. A born storyteller with an encyclopedic knowledge of film, his panels are always fascinating. He discussed his work in the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise at length, citing Part 4 has his favorite performance, New Nightmare as his favorite to make, and Tina from Part 1 as his favorite death scene. With questions culled from Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, Galaxy of Terror, and Never Too Young to Die, Englund called it his most esoteric panel. He concluded by telling the audience about True Terror, a new Travel Channel series he's hosting that's set to premiere in February.
Tumblr media
I've never watched a single episode of Star Trek, but I had a hunch that William Shatner's panel would be wildly entertaining - and he proved me right. With no need for a moderator, he began by telling the captive audience about The Ride, an upcoming documentary following his eight-day motorcycle journey from Chicago to Los Angeles, and his new blues album that's due out next year. Surprisingly, there were no Star Trek questions; topics of conversation ranged from Judgment at Nuremberg and Better Late Than Never to working with whales and his likeness being used for Michael Myers' mask in Halloween.
The godfather of the modern action figure, Marty Abrams, shared the fascinating story of his Mego Corporation. While Abrams remained diplomatic, Mego consultant Paul Clarke asserted their side of the infamous Star Wars story. Abrams did not pass on the Star Wars license; he was in Japan working on Micronauts and never had a meeting. In a "perfect storm," Kenner happened to be located in the same building and signed the deal before Abrams returned. He estimates it cost him billions of dollars. It was a riveting companion to the Kenner-centric Star Wars episode of Netflix's The Toys That Made Us. Abrams also revealed that a Micronauts TV series and movie are in development. The recently relaunched Mego is looking into more contemporary packaging and more play value to appeal to the younger demographic. They're also continuing to expand their licenses, with Star Trek: The Next Generation coming soon.
Tumblr media
I attempted to attend the Stranger Things panel on Saturday evening, but my lack of a mysterious wristband - about which no advanced information was issued - prevented me from doing so. It was a blessing in disguise, however, as I used the spare time to score a front-row seat for Elijah Wood's Q&A. Despite being one of the headlining guests, Wood was in the smaller panel room, which quickly reached capacity.
Wood shared several anecdotes about The Lord of the Rings, confirming that the fellowship actors have matching tattoos and disclosing that he has never read J.R.R. Tolkien's source material. ("I lived the books," he quipped.) He revealed that although Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency is likely done for good, there have been talks of an animated continuation. He also expressed his desire to direct, stating that he would gravitate toward genre films. He cited The Thing, The Exorcist, Rosemary's Baby, Don't Look Now, Carrie, and The Innocents as his favorite horror films, with Goodnight Mommy, Hereditary, and The Witch being recent favorites. He even rushed off stage to hug a Canadian fan who drove over four hours to see Mandy - produced by Wood's SpectreVision - on the big screen.
Tumblr media
Sunday morning kicked off with Christina Ricci's panel. A self-described "very different child," she hypothesized that being raised in a chaotic atmosphere led her to darker roles as a child actress, but playing those parts also impacted her. She cites Buffalo 66 and The Ice Storm among the roles she's most proud of. She loved the technical aspects of working on The Addams Family and considers herself particularly lucky to have worked with Raul Julia. When asked about playing Morticia in an Addams Family reboot, she said she'd be happy to, but it would make more sense for her to play an adult Wednesday. She also discussed making her debut at the age of 7 in a Saturday Night Live skit, an embarrassing experience filming Casper’s kissing scene in the early days of CGI, smoking her first cigarette with Winona Ryder on the set of Mermaids, and understanding the importance of Lizzie Borden upon appearing in New England that weekend.
Like his Star Trek co-star, George Takei was not accompanied by a moderator. He began by speaking about They Called Us Enemy, his new graphic novel about being imprisoned in a Japanese-American interment camp at the age of 5 following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, despite the fact that he and his family were born in America. The subject matter sadly remains relevant, but it was heartening to hear his resolve as well as the audience's reaction. The actor/activist also publicly revealed his support of Pete Buttigieg for the Democratic presidential nomination. He discussed how Star Trek has "lived long and prospered" for over 50 years before proudly speaking about his recent work on AMC's The Terror: Infamy, on which he served as a consultant in addition to acting. While answering fan questions, he shared a humorous anecdote about doing the Howard Stern show for the first time without knowing what he was getting into.
Tumblr media
Rhode Island Comic Con marked comedy legend Chevy Chase's first convention, leading a Vacation family reunion, and saw the final public appearance of Sesame Street's former Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch, Caroll Spinney. In addition to those mentioned, the guest list included Gaten Matarazzo (Stranger Things), Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange), Evanna Lynch (Harry Potter), Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones), Anthony Michael Hall (The Breakfast Club), Patrick Warburton (The Tick), Alex Kingston (Doctor Who), Robert Patrick (Terminator 2), Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead), Lou Ferrigno (The Incredible Hulk), Jaleel White (Family Matters), Richard Brake (Three from Hell), professional wrestling legend Mick Foley, and dozens more.
Beyond the impressive line-up of celebrity guests and a wide variety of vendors, Rhode Island Comic Con also featured comic book creators ranging from big names to indie up-and-comers, exclusive merchandise, after parties, kids activities, geek speed dating, and more. Cosplayers are always a highlight, so I was eager to catch the costume contest on Sunday afternoon. A great Buzz Lightyear - who nailed not only the costume but also the mannerisms - took home the grand prize, bringing the weekend’s fun to infinity and beyond.
