“wanna have a race?” the water beneath you kisses your cheeks as you float on its surface, soft waves carrying you wherever they please with the direction of the wind. the sun isn’t as bright as it had been earlier in the day, doesn’t beam uncomfortably over your skin and in your eyes. it’s beginning to sink down past the horizon, leaving the sky an almost mystical blend of pink and purple.

a lounge chair drags against concrete somewhere on the other side of the pool—no doubt matsuoka going down the checklist of tasks to do before either of you can lock up the gates and go home for the night. he always makes an effort to start the closing duties as soon as the last patron leaves for the day.

“no… would you like to help me clean up?” his voice is smooth despite hours of blowing his whistle and firmly reminding rowdy children not to run or roughhouse. 

“come on.” you whine from your place on the glistening blue water. “sitting in a chair all day is no fun. it’ll be quick—promise! and we can make it more interesting with conditions.”

any noise from outside the pool ceases. you can’t see him from your position on your back but the silence is enough to tell you he’s at least considering. “what do you mean?”

with his question, you effortlessly transition from floating on your back to swimming towards matsuoka. splashes sound in your ears as you make your way to the edge of the pool, the sound softening when you slow to a stop, propping your arms on the warm concrete. your gaze drags up from matsuoka’s sandal-clad feet, over his red trunks and white t-shirt, to finally land on his cherry irises. they’re sparkling with curiosity.

“if you win, i’ll quit slacking off and help you clean up—i’ll even take on the majority of the work. but if i win…” you pause for a moment, contemplating how you can benefit from this arrangement. something comes to mind, makes the corners of your lips pull up in a smile. “you have to do whatever i ask.”

his eyebrows come together in the middle of his forehead in a troubled frown.

you frantically wave your hands to wipe the unsureness from his face, drops of water flinging from your fingertips onto the concrete, leaving dark little imperfect circles on the pool deck. “nothing bad!”

he thinks about it for a moment before shrugging and reaching for the neckline of his shirt to pull the fabric over his head. he shakes his hair out and kicks off his sandals, all while looking at you. “fine, i’m in. freestyle?”

“well, we’re not doing butterfly,” you tell him, putting your palms on the concrete to pull yourself out of the pool. there aren’t any starting blocks at the humble neighborhood pool but you still emerge from the water to take your place.

rin chuckles at your unwillingness to swim his specialty. you must really have your mind set on that unspoken wish of yours. “free it is, then.”

you both ready yourselves at the pool’s edge. knees bent, the toes of your starting foot gripping the edge of the deck, you clear your throat. “on three?”

your companion hums. “you count.”

“one.” you extend your arms over your head. “two.” you lean forward. “three!”

you push off the deck as fast as you can after shouting the last count but it seems like rin is faster, entering the water a fraction of a second quicker than you. you can only stay underwater so long, the pool much more shallow than those used for your competitions, shorter in length too. you break the water’s surface and start your stroke, arms alternating in their mission to carry you to the end of the pool.

the water beside you in rin’s imaginary lane looks like it's splashing ahead of yours. you’re in the final stretch and don’t have the luxury of paying him any attention if you want to win. you muster up every bit of energy left in you after a draining day of dealing with kids and teenagers who treat rules as suggestions and convert it into strength that feeds your final push.

when you emerge at the end, rin’s head has already popped above the water, maroon strands of hair dripping with beads of water that drop right back into the pool. you run a hand over your face and shake your head. “no fair.”

rin snorts. he saw this coming—you always find something to nitpick about whenever your so-called friendly competitions don’t end in your victory. he’d call you a sore loser if it weren’t so entertaining. “you’re only saying that because you lost.”

“nuh-uh.” and here come your desperate, far-fetched attempts at discrediting his win. “you’re taller than me so that’s an automatic advantage.”

he won’t argue with you on that one but he does take notice of how you opted to base your argument on that rather than technique or skill. a mischievous smile turns the corners of his lips upward. no good can come from such an expression. “yeah, but i thought free was supposed to be your specialty.”

a strangled noise of disbelief penetrates the air as your eyes widen and you point an accusing finger at him. “you train in freestyle too!”

rin burst into laughter at your reaction, eyes crinkling at the corner, arms wrapped around his stomach. what’s worse, you can’t be as mad at him as you want to be. you’ve always told him that you find him the prettiest while he’s laughing—really laughing. any anger you can summon, barely any at all, comes in the form of a displeased groan and a weak splash of water at him.

his laughs die down, leaving only the gentle ripple of the waves and the occasional chirp of a cricket on the other side of the fence. humor lingers on rin’s face but there’s tenderness in his features. “look, if you promise to hold up your end of the bargain, then i’ll give you that wish.”

“really?” you ask. you never planned on leaving him hanging, and you think he knows that, but you’re definitely willing to pull your weight if he’s willing to be so amendable.

“sure.” he nods, elbow propped on the deck. “so, what is it you wanted me to do so badly?”

it’s silly now that you think about it—the idea and your convoluted way of asking for it. a sense of comfort washes over you as you gaze into his inquisitive eyes. he once told you he’d do anything for you. “i want… a pool kiss.”

his lips stretch into a grin. “that’s it?”

“don’t ‘that’s it?’ me.” you bring your hand up from the water to slap his chest. your cheeks haven’t been this warm in his presence since the two of you first started dating. “i thought you’d call me corny for asking.”

“i mean, it’s a bit cliche but…” you open your mouth to tell him that your worries weren’t for nothing but he doesn’t let the words pass your lips. his wet palms cradle your face as he leans in to capture your lips in a kiss. his body is firm against you but his lips are soft like the fluffy clouds that have yet to disappear with the day. they’re sweet like the cotton candy sky.

“Ah, this place is just like I remember it!” Rin dropped his duffel bag on the tatami mat next to the door and stretched his arms into the air, sighing.

Rin had to return to Japan for Gou’s high school graduation and decided to take this opportunity to bring you to his home country for a little getaway, complete with introducing you to his family and friends. Hence the immediate reservation made at Anago Hot Springs three days before Gou’s graduation to spend some romantic alone time with you before subjecting you to the chaos that was Iwatobi.

“Oh, have you been here before?” You asked, kicking the door shut behind you and dropping your bag next to his. Rin hummed in confirmation and approached you, taking your hand and leading you to the big glass window that completed one of the walls of your room. He positioned you in front of him and secured his arms around your waist, resting his chin in between your neck and shoulder and gazing out at the view of the shoreline that the window offered.

“Yeah, but this time is gonna be different.” You could hear the lilt in his voice and turned your neck to look at his face. The smirk that you expected to be there was flourishing on his face and his fingers started to rub circles into your hips.

“Why is that?”

“Because I’m here with you.” He placed a chaste kiss to your jawline before releasing you. “Let’s go into town, I’m starving!”

Rin held your hand as you two walked through town, stopping at various food and activity stalls to sample snacks and challenge each other to multiple games. Once you had both had your fill, Rin opted to walk with you along the shore, still holding your hand.

“I missed the beaches here so much.” He smiled, looking out over the water simmering under the moonlight. You cocked an eyebrow at him.

“We have beaches in Sydney, babe. We literally live five minutes from one of the biggest tourist beaches in Australia.”

“Yeah, but…something about the beaches in Japan is different.” Rin stops walking to fully face the water, prompting you to stand beside him and acknowledge the water as well. The water was a deep blue, that somehow glowed even in the darkness, and the lull of the waves along the shoreline seemed to have a gentle calm to it. You could immediately understand what he meant once you stopped to regard it the way that he did. “Maybe it’s because I always came to the beach when I needed to clear my head.” He smiled softly and started to scrape at the sand with his toe. “Or maybe it’s because it’s the last place my dad ever saw. Makes me feel close to him.” 

You turned your head to see Rin still smiling down at the sand, no doubt thinking about his late father who had drowned at sea while working an honest job to provide for his little family. You squeezed his hand. “Is that why you swim?” You asked slowly, trying to make Rin feel safe enough to talk about his feelings. He was probably feeling a multitude of emotions since coming back to Japan after two long years of being away. He was probably being reminded of all the feelings he felt during his time here. He was probably feeling the closest he’d felt to his dad in a long time.

“At first, I wanted to train hard so I could carry out the dream that my dad never got to see through.” Rin chuckled gently and lifted his head to look out across the ocean again. “But after meeting Haru, Makoto, Sousuke, and the others, I started to swim for myself. I trained hard so that I could swim with them.” Rin let go of your hand momentarily to kneel down and brush his fingertips across the waves. “I wonder if you’ll like them.” He straightened up and dried his hand on his pants before grabbing your waist.

“I’ve met Haru.” You smiled fondly at the memory of the black haired, blue eyed man staying in your apartment when he came to visit Rin last winter. You had never seen two humans bicker more than Rin and Haru, but you could see the years of friendship between them with just a glance. 

Haru took to you immediately upon seeing you interact with Rin. Mainly the way you liked to tease him and make him blush. Haru knew Rin was in good hands with you in Australia. He knew of the loneliness Rin experienced during his first time living in Australia, and was glad to see he didn’t have to worry about that this time around.

“Yeah, you guys are just two peas in a pod. Arguing with me about every single damn thing.” Rin shook his head and squeezed your hip, causing you to giggle.

“Tell me about the others.”

“Well, Sousuke, you’ve met him on facetime. There’s not really much more to him than the stubborn, responsible guy you’ve spoken with. He’s probably kept me the most grounded out of any of my friends, but he’s a pain sometimes, the bastard.”

You remember meeting Sousuke one evening when you had arrived home and found Rin laughing and chatting with him over facetime. Rin immediately took the opportunity to introduce you two and the first thing you did was take note of how handsome Sousuke was. This lead to a string of teasing on your part, petty jealousy on Rin’s part, and more teasing on Sousuke’s part. The next time Sousuke happened to be facetiming Rin, Rin made it his life’s mission to keep you away, as if you were going to fall in love with Sousuke just upon seeing his face again. But over time, Rin got over his petty jealousy and allowed you to befriend his best friend. Now, Sousuke was someone you kept in touch with—mainly to gossip about Rin.

Rin went on to talk about Makoto, Nagisa, Momotarou, and Nitori, reminiscing about all the fun times they had together before he left for Australia. Rin talked about his high school days for the duration of the walk back to your inn.

He chatted with you about all the things he wanted to show you once you were back in his hometown while you slipped out of your street clothes and into the robes that the onsen provided.

“I’m gonna take a dip in the hot springs before bed. What are you gonna do?” You asked, securing the belt of the robe around your waist. Rin grinned and did the same.

“I’m gonna join you.”

“Rin, you know very well they are not co-ed pools.” You narrowed your eyes at him as he followed you into the hall after locking your room door.

“Awe, c’mon, it’s late. There’s probably not gonna be anyone around!” Rin pleaded with you all the way to the entrance of the hot springs. You stopped in front of the women’s entrance and smirked at him.

“If I didn’t know you any better I would think you’re just trying to see me wet and naked.” You ran your fingers up along the collar of his robe, lingering to wrap your fingers around the fabric and pull Rin close to you.

“I’m just trying to spend time with my beautiful girlfriend.” Rin said innocently. He leaned in and let the tip of his nose brush against yours. “Getting to see you wet and naked is always a perk, though.”

You placed a chaste kiss to his lips before letting go of him and pushing open the door to the women’s entrance. “You’ll survive, honey. Try not to pass out from the heat!” You waved at Rin before disappearing behind the door, leaving him speechless, hot, and bothered.

You made quick work of slipping out of your robe and slippers, stashing them away in a cubby, and rinsing yourself off before sliding into the warm water. You let out a content sigh, somewhat relieved that you were the only one in the pool and allowing yourself to feel the stress of the long day of travel evaporate from your body with the steam. 

You were about to doze off when the door to the entrance opened and you heard the sequential splash of someone rinsing themselves off. Before you could turn around to politely greet whoever it was that would join you, a figure flashed across your field of vision and dove into the pool.

A creeping suspicion crawled its way up your chest as you shielded your face from being splashed with the steamy water. You lowered your arm just in time to catch a glimpse of a wet mess of maroon locks as Rin swam up to you, stopping only to rest his arms on your thighs and float in front of where you were sitting against the rim of the pool. A smirk was plastered across his lips.

“If you think you can get rid of me that easily, think again, baby.” Rin grinned at you and pushed himself out of the water to start nibbling on your neck, sneaking one of his hands to fit in between your thighs and push them apart.

“Matsuoka Rin, we are in public!” You scolded, pushing his hands away from in between your thighs. He just smirked at you and pressed his bare chest against yours.

The door to your apartment clicks shut behind you, and neither of you are proud enough of the decision to come home together to want to turn on the light, so instead you fumble and stumble with your shoes near the door in the dark of the entryway. 

“It looks exactly the same,” His voice rumbles the silence of the late night, and as you look around, you realize you have frozen your apartment in the time right before he left.

You were expecting to see you ex, Rin Matsuoka, for the first time since the break-up at your best friend’s wedding. Naturally, you both had received your invitations to the wedding before you had broken up, and you all were part of the same friend group, so it would have been willfully ignorant naivety to assume he wasn’t going to show. What you weren’t expecting was to see your name right next to his on the seating chart at the reception. In a flurry of panic, you had hunted down the wedding planner who offered her most shallow apologies, stating that they had made the seating chart before the break-up and that they just couldn’t accommodate the change once everything was set in stone. Your options were to leave or sit down and deal with it.

Your best friend would have killed you if you left.

So then you spent the entire time next to Rin, and at first, the air between the two of you was awkward and silent and uncomfortable, but then a few drinks in, the cake was cut, the music was getting louder and louder, and the two of you were leaning in and exchanging stories of what you all had been up to since Rin moved back to Australia.

It didn’t help that the break-up wasn’t because of irreconcilable differences or some terrible mistake one of you two made or a realization you didn’t actually like each other. Rin needed to move back to Australia to continue his training, and you simply couldn’t leave the life you lived here. No matter which way the two of you put it, he had to leave, and you had to stay. Long distance just wasn’t going to work, and so that left you with a tearful good-bye at an airport, and the loneliest few months in your apartment that you have ever experienced.

So considering all of this, when it was all over, and the light came on, and the dance floor cleared, and the drinks stopped pouring, it only felt natural for you two to call a cab back to the place you once shared.

“I didn’t feel like redecorating,” You offer in response, and you both know it’s probably a lie, but that doesn’t stop you from bushing past him into the kitchen to pour more drinks as he wanders to the couch, his eyes gazing over the pictures of you and your friends and him hung up all over the walls.

“How’s Australia?” You ask, being generous with the shots you’re dumping into the tumblers that the two of you bought when you first signed the lease on the apartment.

“Hot. Full of kangaroos,” He puts on an Australian accent, and it makes the two of you smile at each other across the space as he flops down onto the couch. You join him, shoving one of the two drinks you’re holding into his hand.

You’re sitting probably a little too close to him, and that thought runs through your head as he shifts, stretches, “accidentally” bumps his knee against yours, and you silence the thought by downing the whole drink without a breath and tapping your glass loudly on the coffee table once it’s empty.

“How’s it been here?” He asks, leaning back and looking up at you, his hair falling out of his face in a way that reveals his shining skin in the moonlight coming through the windows.

“Exactly the same,” You mutter, trying not to stare too long but realizing too late that too long passed a long time ago. “A little quieter, I think.”

“It’s quiet down there too,” He muses, and then suddenly, you feel his fingers gently, questioningly testing your lower back, pulling up your spine, lifting off your shoulder blades, and every hair is standing on edge because this is obviously what you both were expecting when you came home together, but it still feels so wanton and wrong. 

“What are we doing, Rin?” You ask softly into the darkness, and he sighs, and you can hear him hang his head back and stare at the ceiling.

“I missed you, and I came home with you because I want to sleep with you, and I figure that you let me come back to your apartment because you want to sleep with me too"
