Tumblr media
notes: i was sad and i want to cheer myself up a little bit so here we are. protective!rin sounds cute because this guy is in concept really soft inside while having an emotional intelligence of a chick. it's cute in a very odd way. warning: light injury on your part (sprained ankle); fluff; mentioned childhood friend to lovers; post canon au; overprotective!rin; mild cursing. as usual, please don't take this to seriously. and can someone talk rin to me. anyone. i miss him.

“Stop with that pissy face,” you said, poking a finger towards Rin’s cheek.
As if nothing happened, Rin didn't stop messaging your right ankle. The ever-present gloomy frown on his face deepened even further. Harshly, yet without much force behind it, his hand swatted your finger away before returning back to you sprained leg, touching them gently despite his grim face. You mocked out a voice of disappointment, leaning back against the foyer’s wall while your boyfriend still chose to focus on your injury instead.
“And stop poking my face,” Rin replied sharply. He looked as grumpy as always, yet to you it was as clear as day that he was expressing his worry along with something. Which you were still trying to figure out.
“Are you mad?” you asked innocently, tilting your head in attempt to see his face better.
In return for your effort, Rin scowled even darker somehow. “Stop moving. And I’m not.”
For someone who was saying that the face and the glare he gave your ankle sure said otherwise.
You winced when he pressed at a particularly sore spot, “Ouch.”
“Bear with it for a little bit,” Rin said, still pushing and tracing his fingers around your heel, albeit much more cautiously. “Do you really think you don't need a hospital?”
“What—ouch—no!” you laughed out in between your pained hisses, “It’s just a sprain. Take it easy.”
Rin took a moment to pause and sent you a heated side eye, “Which came from you landing twelve steps down the fucking stairs. We can't know for sure if you didn’t crack a bone.”
“I’m sure it will hurt way more if something breaks down there,” you replied lightly. “Don’t worry—”
“If I didn't catch you back there, you could have fallen down with your empty head and crumbly neck as some useless cushion and fucking die,” Rin cut you off sharply, a glare directed straight to your face the moment he turned his head fully towards you, “and you told me not to worry?”
At that, you fell silent.
The ringing sound of tinnitus felt like it echoed through your whole body all of a sudden. Both you and Rin stared at each other for another minute, your eyes wide like a saucer whilst Rin’s were as sharp as it was shaky. Looking at him, you couldn't help but feel an overwhelming guilt weighing down your heart.
“…I’m sorry. I gave you a real scare, didn't I?” you apologized. You reached out a hand towards him once again, this time choosing to comb through his bangs, pushing it slightly towards the back of his ear. Rin stayed silent, merely staring at you with a hand still warmly resting on top of your injury. Chuckling softly, you continued, “But really, I’m okay. I caught myself and walked out with a sprain. I bet I can still jump—”
“Don't you dare.” Rin growled at your suggestion. Then, after a blink, he added with a murmur, sounding softer and spoiled, “Dumbass.”
“This dumbass is your girlfriend, unfortunately!” you said proudly with a childish huff. Even as Rin gave you a perplexed, questioning look as if you were his brother suddenly proclaiming a desire to have a pet bunny, you didn't stop. “I mean—yeah, I will be more careful next time. But I grew up in diapers with you. You know I won't go down that easily!”
Rin scoffed at that, “You cried when I bit you last nigh—”
“This and that are different,” you shut him off quickly. “What I mean is that this me, who pushed through your emo phase three years ago with the sheer power of friendship and love, won't be ended by a stair out of all things! No need to be that antsy, Rin!”
As you finished with a smile, you pulled Rin’s head to your chest. Unusually, Rin refused to budge, taking your hand and moving it towards the side of his face instead. “You are—” he said with a hitch in his tone, “—you are hopeless.”
The way Rin spoke it sounded as if he just finally let out a breath he had held in for hours. Being the receiving end of it, you stroke a thumb against his cheek, “That's mean.”
Somehow, that comment of yours immediately flipped a switch and he sent you a dirty, sour glare yet again. “I will show you mean when I carry your ass to the hospital.”
“That’s meaner and seriously—I don't need a doctor, Rin!”
“You won't need a doctor if you didn't try to be funny and suggest we take the emergency stairs—”
“You are the one who told me I need to move around more!”
“—then jumped at a goddamn cockroach—”
“I was surprised!”
Then, that exchange continued for another 30 minutes, with Rin emerging as the winner—equipped with an astoundingly hard head and spiteful comebacks—thus dragging you to the hospital. True to your words, you really didn't break anything.
Nonetheless, Rin still watched you like a hawk for two weeks straight.
