Although it was difficult to determine who the men were in the tent at Kilimanjaro base camp,
they were German geographer Hans Meyer and Austrian mountaineer Ludwig Purtscheller, the first people to reach the rim of Africa’s highest mountain.

Note
Lake Chara, also known as Lake Challa, is a crater lake that straddles the border between Kenya and Tanzania. The lake formed approximately 250,000 years ago. The lake is east of Mount Kilimanjaro, 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) north of Taveta, Kenya, and 55 kilometres (34 mi) east of Rombo District. The lake is surrounded by a steep crater rim with a maximum height of 170 metres (560 ft).
Lake Chara's average annual rainfall is about 565 millimetres (22.2 in). The lake surface has an average annual evaporation of near 1,735 millimetres (68.3 in). Approximately 80 percent of the lake's inflow comes from groundwater, which is derived mostly from rainfall in the montane forest zone of Mount Kilimanjaro at an elevation of 1,800 to 2,800 metres (5,900 to 9,200 ft). It takes about 3 months for groundwater to reach the lake. The groundwater flowed into the lake at an estimated annual volume of 8,390,000 cubic metres (296,000,000 cu ft) from 1964 through 1977.
* That is real??
* I thought they were simply making a joke...

Kenya and Tanzania are two of the most popular destinations for wildlife lovers, offering stunning landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and exceptional opportunities to experience Africa's rich wildlife. Planning a Kenya wildlife holiday or exploring Tanzania wildlife parks can lead to unforgettable adventures filled with thrilling encounters and remarkable scenery. Both countries are home to some of the most renowned national parks and reserves, making them essential stops for any safari enthusiast.
When considering Kenya wildlife holidays, the Masai Mara National Reserve stands out as a top destination. Known for its impressive wildlife and stunning vistas, the Masai Mara is particularly famous for the Great Migration, which occurs between July and October. During this time, millions of wildebeests and zebras travel from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the lush grasslands of the Masai Mara in search of food and water. Visitors can witness this extraordinary event from the comfort of their safari vehicles, enjoying guided game drives that provide opportunities to see predators such as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas. The Masai Mara is also home to the Big Five—lions, elephants, leopards, buffaloes, and rhinoceroses—making it an ideal location for wildlife photography and memorable encounters.
In addition to the Masai Mara, Amboseli National Park is another highlight for those on Kenya wildlife holidays. Known for its clear views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Amboseli is recognized for its large elephant herds. Here, visitors can observe these magnificent creatures as they roam freely across the park. The park’s diverse ecosystems, including swamps and open plains, provide a unique setting for wildlife viewing. Birdwatchers will also find Amboseli a paradise, with over 400 species of birds recorded in the area. Its accessible location from Nairobi makes it a popular choice for travelers seeking a quick escape into nature.
Tanzania wildlife parks offer equally impressive experiences, with the Serengeti National Park being a premier destination. The Serengeti is famous for its vast savannahs and is one of the best places to witness the Great Migration. Visitors can participate in guided game drives and hot air balloon safaris, providing a unique perspective on the expansive landscapes below. The Serengeti is also home to a diverse range of wildlife, including the Big Five and an array of other species such as giraffes, zebras, and wildebeests. The park’s rich biodiversity and varied landscapes make it a top destination for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers.
Another notable Tanzania wildlife park is Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This massive volcanic caldera is home to a high concentration of wildlife, making it one of the best locations for game viewing in Africa. Within the crater, visitors can see lions resting in the shade, elephants grazing, and the endangered black rhinoceros. The unique ecosystem of the crater supports a variety of wildlife, making it an essential stop on any Tanzania wildlife safari. The views from the crater rim provide a stunning backdrop for wildlife photography, ensuring visitors capture lasting memories.
For those interested in a Kenya and Tanzania combined safari, many tour operators offer packages that allow travelers to experience the best of both countries. This option typically includes visits to the Masai Mara in Kenya and the Serengeti in Tanzania, providing a seamless transition between two of Africa’s most iconic wildlife destinations. Travelers can witness the Great Migration in both locations and enjoy diverse wildlife experiences in each park. Such combined safaris often include accommodations in luxury lodges or tented camps, providing comfort and an immersive experience in nature.
In terms of accommodations, both Kenya and Tanzania offer a range of options to suit various budgets and preferences. From luxury lodges with stunning views and exceptional service to more affordable tented camps that provide a closer connection to nature, there is something for everyone. Many lodges and camps also offer guided tours, allowing guests to learn more about the wildlife and ecosystems they are exploring. This adds an educational component to the experience, making it more enriching for families and solo travelers.
When planning a wildlife holiday in Kenya or Tanzania, it’s essential to consider the best time to visit. The dry season, which typically runs from June to October, is ideal for wildlife viewing as animals congregate around water sources, making them easier to spot. This is also the peak season for the Great Migration, particularly in the Masai Mara and Serengeti. However, the green season, from November to May, offers unique opportunities for birdwatching and witnessing the calving season, when many animals give birth.
Both Kenya and Tanzania are committed to wildlife conservation, and many safari operators support sustainable tourism practices. This ensures that travelers can enjoy the beauty of these incredible landscapes while also contributing to the preservation of the wildlife and habitats they cherish. Choosing eco-friendly lodges and participating in conservation-focused activities can enhance the experience and positively impact local communities.
Whether you choose a Kenya wildlife holiday or explore Tanzania wildlife parks, both countries offer remarkable experiences that will leave you with lasting memories. From the captivating landscapes of the Masai Mara and Serengeti to the rich wildlife in Amboseli and Ngorongoro Crater, every moment spent in these iconic destinations is an adventure waiting to unfold.

African Safari With Kids: Everything You Need to Know
The property also has a “kids room” full of games, toys and other entertainment that we can barely pull any child off, as well as babysitting services during dinner – leaving us to peruse the wine list. A round outdoor raised rim pool on the face of Mount Kilimanjaro served as the perfect place to cool off. The staff even brought out lunch boxes one day so we could enjoy a casual, picnic-like…

Random Thoughts at 60
A few days ago I turned 60 years old. 60 years is a little strange. I cannot figure out if 60 years is a long time, or a relatively short period. There are times when it seems a little bit of both. Whether 60 years is short or long, it is one of those big, round numbers that typically give people a chance to think and reflect. Without further ado, here is a collection of scattered thoughts from 60 years of shuffling around this orbiting sphere.
In my lifetime I have seen Mens' fashion change from normal ties to very wide ties, only to see them get very skinny, bright and pastelly, and back to a more middle range of width again. I like it in the middle, am not overly fond of skinny, but I really hate the big wide ties. No reason.
I remember watching Apollo 8 circle the moon on Christmas Eve, and the first steps on the moon for Apollo 11. I thought that if I looked at the moon with binoculars I might be able to see the lander with the astronauts walking around. Even though I couldn’t, there was such a sense of accomplishment. I do not think we aspire enough anymore.
Apparently, 60 years is not long enough for my Indians to win a World Series championship, or my  Browns a Super Bowl. My Indians (I will not use the new name) were one strike away in 97, and one hit away in 2016 but it all predictably collapsed. I am all alone in pain as it was the Cubs who beat them in 2016. Maybe next year, but I doubt it.
When I was young people always dressed in their best for church. That has all changed. Now people dress the same on Sunday as they do the rest of the week. The people who really have this holiness thing down still look the same now as they did 40 years ago- and it has nothing to do with clothing. Just thought I would mention that. There is a lesson there somewhere.
I don’t know if I gave much thought to the places I would like to see when I was growing up as a teen in Marion, OH. In these subsequent years I have been fortunate to see:
- Mount Rainier on a clear day.
- Poas Volcano in Costa Rica from the rim of the crater.
- Upper Two Medicine Lake in Glacier National Park on a spectacular September day.
- Zip-lined over a Jamaican waterfall
- Mount Kilimanjaro on a spectacular morning with elephants walking in front of me
- The Road Hole at St. Andrews in Scotland
I think I still would take a Lake Michigan Sunset over all of these. Call me crazy.
Just a little bit ago I was watching my kids play baseball and soccer. I loved watching them play sports, sing in musicals and do the things they loved. They live their own lives now and are out in the world on their own. How did this happen so fast? Now I am watching grandchildren grow up. If I had known grandchildren were this enjoyable, we would have had them first.
I remember when I received the Texas Instruments calculator with the % function in the 8th grade. I was at the height of Western technological prowess. Things just cannot get any more advanced than that computer I held in my hand. I do not remember which model that was, but it cost around 80 bucks. Let me check my smart phone for that model number, I will get back to you.
People love their chocolate, but I am not much for desserts. Yet I still remember a raspberry cobbler with a sweet crème sauce drizzle and blueberries from the Shields Tavern in Williamsburg, VA. I also remember a Honeycrisp Apple Crisp with homemade Ice Cream and caramel sauce from Boone’s North Country Grill in Suttons Bay, MI. I think I might walk across broken glass for either of these.
I loved my college years. I met many new friends, and started to see that the world was a little larger than I had previously experienced. Somewhere in these years I picked this girl who would take me to the hospital when I had a kidney stone, raise my children, and will one day plan my funeral. 38 years later that was a better choice than I knew at the time.
I am certain there are many people who are richer than me, taller than me, and better looking than me, but no one has been blessed with better friends, and I am not burdened with ex-friends. That is a good thing. Somehow in all of this, I also was lucky to have the two best kids in the world, and two others have joined the family as well along with six grandchildren. That is an even better thing. There has been a lot of change over 60 years, but the one constant has been grace. Sometimes I have searched for it, and other times I have been immersed in it, but it was more prevalent than I was aware at the time. I am sure I will look back at this time, and say the same thing. At 60 I am more confident about the existence of grace than I am of any other thing. I hope I look for it more in the years ahead.
BTW – it was the Ti-1450.

Top 5 Reasons why you should visit Tanzania
Tanzania, a jewel in East Africa, is a destination that captivates travelers with its remarkable blend of natural wonders, vibrant cultures, and unforgettable experiences. From the sprawling plains of the Serengeti to the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania offers a range of adventures that appeal to nature enthusiasts, thrill-seekers, and culture lovers alike. The country’s stunning landscapes are complemented by its rich wildlife, including the iconic Great Migration, and the serene beauty of Zanzibar’s beaches. Additionally, Tanzania’s diverse ethnic groups and their traditions provide travelers with a unique cultural tapestry to explore. Whether you’re looking to embark on a thrilling safari, climb a majestic mountain, or simply relax on idyllic beaches, Tanzania promises an array of experiences that make it a must-visit destination.
Tumblr media
Here are some reasons why you should visit Tanzania.
1. The Serengeti National Park: An Eden for Animals:
Tumblr media
Serengeti National Park is well known throughout the world for its amazing species and gorgeous scenery. With millions of wildebeest and zebras migrating across the plains during the Great Migration in quest of better pastures, the Serengeti provides a safari experience that is unmatched for those who love to travel on foot. It's a must-visit location for adventure seekers and lovers of the great outdoors because visitors may watch the dramatic sight of predators and prey in their natural habitat. Numerous animals, including lions, elephants, and giraffes, have homes thanks to the park's varied ecosystems, which range from grasslands to acacia trees.
2. Mount Kilimanjaro: A Stunning Ascent:
Tumblr media
For trekkers and mountaineers, climbing Africa's tallest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, is a trip off their bucket list. At 5,895 meters, its diverse environments, ranging from lush rainforests to frozen tundra, make for a memorable climbing experience. Beautiful views may be seen during the ascent, and reaching the summit gives one a sense of accomplishment. The allure of Kilimanjaro is its accessibility; although preparation is essential, climbers do not require technical expertise to ascend the peak. The ascent is a demanding but worthwhile experience, making it a must-do for anybody hoping to scale one of the most famous peaks in the world.
3. Zanzibar: A Heavenly Island:
Tumblr media
The Tanzanian archipelago of Zanzibar is well-known for its beautiful beaches, fascinating history, and lively culture. The island's immaculate white sand beaches and azure waters provide the ideal setting for leisurely swimming and water sports. With its winding lanes, humming markets, and antique buildings, Stone Town a UNESCO World Heritage site offers a window into the island's past commercial and cultural legacy. Zanzibar is a wonderful place for leisure and cultural discovery because of its distinctive fusion of Swahili, Arabic, and Portuguese influences.
4. The Natural Wonder of Ngorongoro Crater:
A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Ngorongoro Crater is one of the best-preserved volcanic calderas in the world. This enormous crater, which was formed millions of years ago, is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including the critically endangered black rhino. Because of the crater's rich vegetation and numerous water sources, animals can find refuge there, which makes it a great place to see wildlife. Ngorongoro Crater is a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers because of the expansive vistas from the crater rim and the chance to witness a variety of species in their native habitat.
5. Distinctive Heritage and Culture:
Tanzania is home to more than 120 ethnic groups, each of which contributes to the country's diverse cultural landscape. Traditional dances, music, and events that showcase the nation's rich cultural diversity are available to tourists. Known for their unusual attire and rituals, the Maasai provide cultural tours and community visits that provide a unique perspective into their way of life. Tanzania is a place where you can mix the natural beauty of the country with the rich cultural diversity of the local communities by getting involved with them and learning about their traditions.

The Marangu route, also known as the "Coca-Cola" route, is the oldest, most well-established route on Kilimanjaro. This is the only route which offers sleeping huts in dormitory style accommodations in lieu of camping. There are 60 bunk beds each at Mandara and Kibo Huts, and 120 bunk beds at Horombo Hut. Guests are supplied with mattresses and pillows, but sleeping bags are still required. The huts have communal dining halls and basic washrooms, ranging from flushing toilets and running water at the lower huts to long drop toilets and buckets of water at Kibo Hut. Many favor Marangu because it is considered to be the easiest path on the mountain, given its gradual slope and direct path. However, the short time frame of the route makes Altitude Acclimatization fairly difficult. The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the southeast. Marangu is unfortunately less scenic than the other routes because the ascent and descent are along the same path. It is also the most crowded route for that reason.
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut Elevation (ft): 6,046 ft to 8,858 ft Distance: 8 km Hiking Time: 4-5 hours Habitat: Rain Forest Hut: Mandara Hut. We head to the Marangu Gate for the necessary formalities before beginning our trek. The trail climbs through a tropical rain forest near the upper edge of the forest line, where we sometimes see playful blue monkeys. The trail then widens to expose beautiful hillsides until we reach Mandara Hut.
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut Elevation (ft): 8,858 ft to 12,205 ft Distance: 12 km Hiking Time: 6-8 hours Habitat: Heath / Moorland Our second day on the trail starts up with a steep ascent through the forest and opens into high moorland. If the sky is clear, we might get our first views of Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. Those two volcanic peaks  make up the summit of Kilimanjaro.
Day 3: Horombo Hut to Mawenzi Hut to Horombo Hut Elevation (ft): 12,205 ft to 14,160 ft to 12,205 ft Distance: 10 km Hiking Time: 3-5 hours Habitat: Heath This extra day is used for Adaptation. We hike towards or all the way to Mawenzi Hut and back. The unique landscape offers motivating views of Kibo and Mawenzi.
Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut Elevation (ft): 12,205 ft to 15,430 ft Distance: 10 km Hiking Time: 6-8 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert On this day we climb gently, then cross the lunar desert of the “Saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach our campsite, which sits at the bottom of the Kibo crater wall. Once at Camp, we rest and enjoying an early dinner and prepare for summit day.
Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Point to Horombo Hut Elevation (ft): 15,430 ft to 19,341 ft to 12,205 ft Distance: 22 km Hiking Time: 10-13 hours Habitat: Arctic We wake up in the middle of the night and begin the final push to reach the Roof of Africa. The trail to Gilman’s Point is very steep, and the ascent will be slow and steady. From Gilman’s, it is a traverse along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. We stay at the summit for a short time, to take photos and enjoy the views, before retracing our steps all the way back to Horombo Hut.
Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate Elevation (ft): 12,205 ft to 6,046 ft Distance: 20 km Hiking Time: 5-7 hours Habitat: Rain Forest A long trek is in store for today, however it is mostly downhill. Once we reach the park headquarters, there at Marangu Gate, we pick up our certificate, that proves our achievement, and catch our vehicle transfer to the Hotel in Moshi.
