Lake Chara, also known as Lake Challa, is a crater lake that straddles the border between Kenya and Tanzania. The lake formed approximately 250,000 years ago. The lake is east of Mount Kilimanjaro, 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) north of Taveta, Kenya, and 55 kilometres (34 mi) east of Rombo District. The lake is surrounded by a steep crater rim with a maximum height of 170 metres (560 ft).

Lake Chara's average annual rainfall is about 565 millimetres (22.2 in). The lake surface has an average annual evaporation of near 1,735 millimetres (68.3 in). Approximately 80 percent of the lake's inflow comes from groundwater, which is derived mostly from rainfall in the montane forest zone of Mount Kilimanjaro at an elevation of 1,800 to 2,800 metres (5,900 to 9,200 ft). It takes about 3 months for groundwater to reach the lake. The groundwater flowed into the lake at an estimated annual volume of 8,390,000 cubic metres (296,000,000 cu ft) from 1964 through 1977.

There’s a good chance to see large herds of elephant and buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe and oryx, as well as predators, including lion, cheetah and leopard. Stop off for a picnic lunch on the way to the Kuro Airstrip for a scenic flight to the Manyara Airstrip.

On arrival, you will be greeted by a representative from The Manor at Ngorongoro who will take you to see an authentic African market in the township of Karatu. Arrive at The Manor in time for a scrumptious high-tea, before spending some time unwinding in your private cottage.

Following breakfast, the next day, set out by vehicle on a complete day of discovery in the Ngorongoro Crater. Enjoy a picnic lunch before continuing your exploration of the Crater. Later in the afternoon, you’ll head back to The Manor at Ngorongoro for some leisure time before cocktails and dinner.

Day 8; Farewell the amazing Tanzania

Enjoy a delightful breakfast before setting off to explore the banks of the Grumeti River on a guided game walk. The Grumeti River is the backdrop to the spectacular river crossing of the wildebeest migration when thousands of wildebeest attempt to cross these crocodile-infested waters. Enjoy a relaxed lunch before a final game drive on the way to the airstrip for your flight to Arusha.

African Safari With Kids: Everything You Need to Know

The property also has a “kids room” full of games, toys and other entertainment that we can barely pull any child off, as well as babysitting services during dinner – leaving us to peruse the wine list. Random Thoughts at 60

A few days ago I turned 60 years old. 60 years is a little strange. I cannot figure out if 60 years is a long time, or a relatively short period. There are times when it seems a little bit of both. Whether 60 years is short or long, it is one of those big, round numbers that typically give people a chance to think and reflect. Without further ado, here is a collection of scattered thoughts from 60 years of shuffling around this orbiting sphere.

In my lifetime I have seen Mens' fashion change from normal ties to very wide ties, only to see them get very skinny, bright and pastelly, and back to a more middle range of width again. I like it in the middle, am not overly fond of skinny, but I really hate the big wide ties. No reason.

I remember watching Apollo 8 circle the moon on Christmas Eve, and the first steps on the moon for Apollo 11. I thought that if I looked at the moon with binoculars I might be able to see the lander with the astronauts walking around. Even though I couldn’t, there was such a sense of accomplishment. I do not think we aspire enough anymore. 

Apparently, 60 years is not long enough for my Indians to win a World Series championship, or my  Browns a Super Bowl. My Indians (I will not use the new name) were one strike away in 97, and one hit away in 2016 but it all predictably collapsed. I am all alone in pain as it was the Cubs who beat them in 2016. Maybe next year, but I doubt it. 

When I was young people always dressed in their best for church. That has all changed. Now people dress the same on Sunday as they do the rest of the week. The people who really have this holiness thing down still look the same now as they did 40 years ago- and it has nothing to do with clothing. Just thought I would mention that. There is a lesson there somewhere.

I don’t know if I gave much thought to the places I would like to see when I was growing up as a teen in Marion, OH. In these subsequent years I have been fortunate to see:

- Mount Rainier on a clear day.

- Poas Volcano in Costa Rica from the rim of the crater.

- Upper Two Medicine Lake in Glacier National Park on a spectacular September day.

- Zip-lined over a Jamaican waterfall

- Mount Kilimanjaro on a spectacular morning with elephants walking in front of me

- The Road Hole at St. Andrews in Scotland

I think I still would take a Lake Michigan Sunset over all of these. Call me crazy. 

Just a little bit ago I was watching my kids play baseball and soccer. I loved watching them play sports, sing in musicals and do the things they loved. They live their own lives now and are out in the world on their own. How did this happen so fast? Now I am watching grandchildren grow up. If I had known grandchildren were this enjoyable, we would have had them first. 

I remember when I received the Texas Instruments calculator with the % function in the 8th grade. I was at the height of Western technological prowess. Things just cannot get any more advanced than that computer I held in my hand. I do not remember which model that was, but it cost around 80 bucks. Let me check my smart phone for that model number, I will get back to you. 

People love their chocolate, but I am not much for desserts. Yet I still remember a raspberry cobbler with a sweet crème sauce drizzle and blueberries from the Shields Tavern in Williamsburg, VA. I also remember a Honeycrisp Apple Crisp with homemade Ice Cream and caramel sauce from Boone’s North Country Grill in Suttons Bay, MI. I think I might walk across broken glass for either of these. 

I loved my college years. I met many new friends, and started to see that the world was a little larger than I had previously experienced. Somewhere in these years I picked this girl who would take me to the hospital when I had a kidney stone, raise my children, and will one day plan my funeral. 38 years later that was a better choice than I knew at the time. 

I am certain there are many people who are richer than me, taller than me, and better looking than me, but no one has been blessed with better friends, and I am not burdened with ex-friends. That is a good thing. Somehow in all of this, I also was lucky to have the two best kids in the world, and two others have joined the family as well along with six grandchildren. That is an even better thing. There has been a lot of change over 60 years, but the one constant has been grace. Sometimes I have searched for it, and other times I have been immersed in it, but it was more prevalent than I was aware at the time. I am sure I will look back at this time, and say the same thing. At 60 I am more confident about the existence of grace than I am of any other thing. I hope I look for it more in the years ahead.

The Marangu route, also known as the "Coca-Cola" route, is the oldest, most well-established route on Kilimanjaro. This is the only route which offers sleeping huts in dormitory style accommodations in lieu of camping. There are 60 bunk beds each at Mandara and Kibo Huts, and 120 bunk beds at Horombo Hut. Guests are supplied with mattresses and pillows, but sleeping bags are still required. The huts have communal dining halls and basic washrooms, ranging from flushing toilets and running water at the lower huts to long drop toilets and buckets of water at Kibo Hut. Many favor Marangu because it is considered to be the easiest path on the mountain, given its gradual slope and direct path. However, the short time frame of the route makes Altitude Acclimatization fairly difficult. The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the southeast. Marangu is unfortunately less scenic than the other routes because the ascent and descent are along the same path. It is also the most crowded route for that reason. 

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut Elevation (ft): 6,046 ft to 8,858 ft Distance: 8 km Hiking Time: 4-5 hours Habitat: Rain Forest Hut: Mandara Hut. We head to the Marangu Gate for the necessary formalities before beginning our trek. The trail climbs through a tropical rain forest near the upper edge of the forest line, where we sometimes see playful blue monkeys. The trail then widens to expose beautiful hillsides until we reach Mandara Hut.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut Elevation (ft): 8,858 ft to 12,205 ft Distance: 12 km Hiking Time: 6-8 hours Habitat: Heath / Moorland Our second day on the trail starts up with a steep ascent through the forest and opens into high moorland. If the sky is clear, we might get our first views of Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. Those two volcanic peaks  make up the summit of Kilimanjaro.

Day 3: Horombo Hut to Mawenzi Hut to Horombo Hut Elevation (ft): 12,205 ft to 14,160 ft to 12,205 ft Distance: 10 km Hiking Time: 3-5 hours Habitat: Heath This extra day is used for Adaptation. We hike towards or all the way to Mawenzi Hut and back. The unique landscape offers motivating views of Kibo and Mawenzi.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut Elevation (ft): 12,205 ft to 15,430 ft Distance: 10 km Hiking Time: 6-8 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert On this day we climb gently, then cross the lunar desert of the “Saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach our campsite, which sits at the bottom of the Kibo crater wall. Once at Camp, we rest and enjoying an early dinner and prepare for summit day.

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Point to Horombo Hut Elevation (ft): 15,430 ft to 19,341 ft to 12,205 ft Distance: 22 km Hiking Time: 10-13 hours Habitat: Arctic We wake up in the middle of the night and begin the final push to reach the Roof of Africa. The trail to Gilman’s Point is very steep, and the ascent will be slow and steady. From Gilman’s, it is a traverse along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. We stay at the summit for a short time, to take photos and enjoy the views, before retracing our steps all the way back to Horombo Hut.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate Elevation (ft): 12,205 ft to 6,046 ft Distance: 20 km Hiking Time: 5-7 hours Habitat: Rain Forest A long trek is in store for today, however it is mostly downhill. Once we reach the park headquarters, there at Marangu Gate, we pick up our certificate, that proves our achievement, and catch our vehicle transfer to the Hotel in Moshi.
