ABBA “Voyage” Limited Deluxe Edition - nearly 40 years with a new studio album was recorded by the group at Benny Andersson's Riksmixningsverket studio in Stockholm. The songs are the first new material from ABBA since the release of the "Under Attack" single in December of 1982

Swedish pop group ABBA has announced its return after nearly 40 years with a new studio album and a digital concert that will see singers Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad and instrumentalists/songwriters Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus performing digitally via avatars with a live 10-piece band in a purpose-built arena in London, beginning on May 27, 2022.

The “Voyage” album will be released worldwide on November 5, 2021 via Universal Music Group’s Capitol label. The two newly released songs, “I Still Have Faith in You” and “Don’t Shut Me Down,” were recorded by the group at Andersson’s Riksmixningsverket studio in Stockholm and will both feature in the concert. The songs are the first new material from ABBA since the release of the “Under Attack” single in December of 1982.

According to the announcement, the digital versions of ABBA have been created “following weeks and months of motion-capture and performance techniques with the four band members and an 850-strong team from Industrial Light & Magic,” the company founded by George Lucas.

“ABBA Voyage” will open the ABBA Arena, a state-of-the-art 3,000 capacity arena located at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London on May 27, 2022. Pre-registration for tickets opens on September 2, 2021 at 6pm on abbavoyage.com with tickets on general sale from September 7, 2021.

It’s been a while since we made music together. Almost 40 years, actually. We took a break in the spring of 1982 and now we’ve decided it’s time to end it. They say it’s foolhardy to wait more than 40 years between albums, so we’ve recorded a follow-up to The Visitors. We simply call it Voyage and we’re truly sailing in uncharted waters. With the help of our younger selves, we travel into the future. It’s not easy to explain but then it hasn’t been done before.”

Björn Ulvaeus said: “They’re such amazing singers, those two, I was completely floored by the way they delivered those songs. They’re true musicians; totally unimpressed by pop star glamour but still having a great time being creative in a recording studio. The “Voyage” project has injected new life into us in more ways than one.”

Benny Andersson said, “It’s hard to say what’s been the most joyful thing for me with this project, if it’s the involvement in creating the concert together with everyone or being back in the studio together again after 40 years. I think hearing Frida and Agnetha singing again is hard to beat. When you come to the arena you will have the four of us together with an absolutely glorious 10-piece band. And even if not in the flesh, we will be right there, thanks to the work of the creative team and ILM.”

Anni-Frid Lyngstad said: “Those first sessions back in 2018 were such fun and when Benny called and asked if I’d consider singing some more I jumped at it! And what songs!! My respect and love go out to these exceptionally talented, truly genius songwriters! Such joy it was to work with the group again. I am so happy with what we have made, and I dearly hope our fans feel the same.”

"I am a huge fan of ABBA and adore them more than anything. Impera was recorded at Atlantis Studios in Stockholm, which used to be called Metronome Studio and where ABBA recorded all their albums up to 'Voulez-Vous'. The piano in 'Spillways' is the same as the one on which 'Money, Money, Money' was played. Parts of our album Meliora were recorded in Benny Andersson's own studio [Riksmixningsverket], where the new ABBA album was also recorded. So at one point we even recorded in the same studio before ABBA!"

Fun fact: Impera was recorded at Atlantis Studios in Stockholm where ABBA recorded most of their early works. The piano used in “Spillways” is the same as the piano ABBA used in “Money Money Money” hence the similarities!

När Benny överraskar Frida (fast Hyvönen :) En av många obetalbara, magiska stunder från SiNDiNG SESSiONS! Många av er har önskat - därför visar vi upp nästan alla episoder igen som en del av min musiksommar på PSL. “Blue Sunshine” is a track from Virgins at Heart’s new album Safety Lagoon. Gustav, the track’s composer, has the following to say about the track and its creative process:

“For me, "Blue Sunshine" conveys an emotionally ambiguous feeling. Sorrowful and hopeful at the same time. Both mellow and up-tempo. Although we toned it down in the production to fit the mood, the verses have a groove inspired by “Bitter Sweet Symphony” by the Verve. I love that drumbeat! But this changes in the chorus where the song turns in a brighter direction. This part is more of a mix of the beat in Rolling Stones' '“Shine A Light” and the bass line in "Express Yourself" with Charles Wright & The Watts. I remember being surprised when the guys in the band thought the mellotron hook sounded Asian after they heard an early demo. I still don’t know about that. A favorite part of the song for me is the instrumental part that Johan added after the second chorus. It reminds me somewhat of “The Rain Song” by Led Zeppelin.”

The album Safety Lagoon was recorded in the renowned Atlantis Studio, which previously went under the name Metronome Studio. If the walls of this studio could talk, they would talk about such legendary Swedish artists as ABBA, Roxette and The Cardigans.

Virgins at Heart are a Stockholm-based indie-pop band that have been playing together since the very early 2000s. The group consists of band members Gustav Rosén (bass + vocals), Anders Nordström (guitars + vocals), Johan Bjurling (keys + vocals), and Jonas Tyrestad (drums + vocals). Johan Bjurling is also the main producer, although the production style is very collaborative.

The band is indie in its true sense. After spending thousands of hours in various mold damaged basements in the outskirts of Stockholm, only recently, the decision was made to start recording the songs in a more serious fashion.

In 2016 the debut album 2 2 Tango was released. This album was recorded and produced in Johan's basement. For the second album, the bar was raised and some of Stockholm's most renowned studios (Atlantis studio, Riksmixningsverket, Cosmos mastering) were booked for a couple of sessions. Still, most of the production took place in Johan's basement.

From the roots in indie pop and indie rock, the band has lately started to go more towards a more dreamy and psychedelic sound.

Inspiratör/föreläsare: Linn Fijal

Låt oss presentera en av kursens inspiratörer/föreläsare! Linn Fijal, är 26 år och kommer från Södertälje. Linn jobbar som studiochef på Riksmixningsverket som är Benny Anderssons inspelningsstudio. Hon fick jobbet 2010 efter en kandidatexamen i ljudteknik från musikhögskolan i Piteå och har sedan dess jobbat med allt från Arch Enemy till Gustav Sjökvists kammarkör, Frida Hyvönen och Platina Jazz. Linn kommer till kursstart i januari för att berätta om sina erfarenheter. Det ser vi fram emot!
