happy valentines day!!
so i wanted to write a small thing for crimson days after pins drew this really cute lil thing with avia and rook, but would you believe it, the idea has ran away from me
it started with inspo from the conversation above that me and @mrpinstripesuit had last year right before forsaken came out!! which is what i have written below, but! my brain went ‘hey, remember those ‘five times this thing happened’ fics? maybe you should turn this into that’ so. thats the plan aha, ‘the five times rook proposed to avia, and the one time she said yes’
(not that she said no five times, no sadness here boys dont worry. it was all very jokey in the beginning, a couple of times will be before they even got together bc rook is Like That and it flustered avia to no end aha)
its gonna be little snapshots into their relationship leading up to The Big Moment and im on holiday all next week so after i bash out some commissions, i’ll be working on extending this
but for now, here’s a wip!
“Howdy, darlin’.”
“Rook,” Avia starts, taking a measured breath around the grin on her face. “If I turn around and you have that stupid hat on…”
Grier’s giggle turns into an all-out laugh as Rook places a foot on the bannister next to the Warlock. Avia turns her head just so and sure enough, her ridiculous boyfriend is wearing that god-forsaken cowboy hat.
“Are those spurs?” Grier asks, shaking his head as he looks at Rook’s boots. Avia glances down, mutters a half-hearted curse under her breath and places a hand over her eyes.
“I can’t believe you.” Eden pipes up, and then. “Actually, you know what? I can. And somehow that’s worse.”
“Sometimes I feel as though you do this just to annoy her.” Carver adds, folding his arms as Grier laughs away, Avia reaching over to prod his ribs.
“Nah, she loves it,” Rook says around a drawl, to which Avia splutters in defiance.
“You know, I remember specifically telling you not to wear that in the Tower.” She laughs, finally turning to look at Rook.
The hat sits proudly atop his head, black leather (of course) with a small red trim, the thread lovingly stitched across the brim. He’s got his hands rested easy on his belt, one leg still on the bannister as he straightens his back and squares his shoulders, looking at her in a way that still flips her stomach and brings a curled smile to her lips.
She reaches up and flicks the brim, watching his eyes open in worry as it briefly lifts off his head.
“You’re ridiculous.”
He settles back into his persona easily enough, another grin crossing his lips. “Darn tootin’.”
“Travelers Light,” Avia groans. “I’ve made a mistake.”
“Do you mean in a general sense?” Grier smiles, gesturing at Rook, who takes his foot off the bannister and pulls Avia into a hug, his chest to her back. She wraps her arms over the top of his, her blush available for all to see.
“Funny, kid,” Rook replies, the two sharing a look of petulance. “She means getting me this thing.”
“You bought that?!” Carver cries, clasping Eden on the shoulder.
“She sure did!” Rook squeezes her. “We’re practically married now.”
She tenses in his arms, her brows furrowing. He senses it, as easy as taking a breath, and the group falls silent at the change in tone.
“Uh, sugar?” He tries to laugh. “Too far?”
“No, no, not at all,” Avia starts. Her voice catches in her throat, the voice in her head screaming; out with it! She twists her body to face him. “You, uh. You want to marry me?”
The silence grows. Shattered seconds later by Carver, Eden, and Griers simultaneous and incredulous yelling.
“Seriously?!”
“Oh, Avia!”
“Wow! Gross!”
Avia doesn’t get a chance to throw them all a look to silence their words. Instead, the hat is placed on her head and she’s swept off her feet and into Rook’s arms in an instant. Her own arms flail, finding purchase around his neck. When she settles it’s to his brown eyes shining in a way she’s never seen before, his smile overjoyed and not hiding the fact.
“Well then sugar,” and he kisses her, ducking his head underneath the hat. When he pulls back he says, to her flushed face and full heart; “Let’s get married.”
