RIGA - More than 40,000 participants are preparing for XIII Latvian School Youth Song and Dance Festival, according to the organizers' estimates after the first round of registration of participants.
The largest part of the total number of participants are folk dancers and choir singers - 20,774 and 12,426 participants respectively. Other participants include 3,245 modern dancers, 1,520 folklore groups, 1,315 brass band musicians, 1,018 symphony orchestra musicians, 468 kokle players and 245 accordionists.
Instrumental ensembles, vocal ensembles, theatres, chapels, professional education groups, special education groups and visual and plastic arts groups will also take part.
The largest number of registered groups is from Vidzeme - 872 groups. Riga will be represented by 663 groups, Kurzeme by 457 groups, Latgale by 368 groups, Zemgale by 186 groups and Selija by 80 groups. Also 18 groups are preparing for the festival from abroad.
The second round of registration is planned for the spring, after the selection competitions and auditions, when each participant will be registered for the festival.
The XIII Latvian School Youth Song and Dance Festival will take place in 2025 on July 5-13.
The main venues in Riga have traditionally been the Mezaparks Grand Stage, where the gala concert will take place, and the Daugava Stadium, where a grand folk dance concert is planned.
Various concerts and events will also take place elsewhere in Riga - at Arena Riga, Brivibas Square, Dailes Theatre, Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of Music, the Ethnographic Open-Air Museum of Latvia, the University of Latvia, the Riga Circus, Dome Church, the Latvian Society House, Kipsala International Exhibition Centre, VEF Culture Palace, Vermane Garden and Viesturdarzs.
It will be ten years since the previous one in 2015. Due to the pandemic conditions caused by Covid-19 and national restrictions, the festival could not take place in July 2020. ________________

TW for dubious consent, potentially sexual assault
I absolutely adore Intoxication by the inimitable jonnimir. This is an imagined continuation of that fic (found here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/41607915). That fic’s basic premise: Zemo gets drunk, gets sad, gets horny—it’s his wedding anniversary to his dead wife. He throws himself at Bucky, who is too interested in getting off to care about Zemo’s wellbeing (because obviously Zemo is self-destructive af so can’t be trusted with his own wellbeing…), so what starts as Zemo encouraging Bucky to fuck him ends with Zemo crying while Bucky roughly uses him for his own pleasure. I like to think of Bucky as an at least vaguely good human being, so this alternate characterization was so fun (and obv hot) to play with.
This is very much a draft, so if you have any thoughts reactions or feedback pleaseeeee lmk, love yall! The theme is basically just Zemo using Bucky as a form of self-destruction/self-harm which Bucky is all too happy (or potentially unaware?) to oblige, until an encounter happens where Zemo feels a complete and terrifying loss of control.
START:
It happens again. And again. James starts putting the drinks in his hand.
Zemo doesn’t say no.
He never says no. He reaches up and out, takes a long sip, swallows. He laughs, long and high and clear—nobody expects that. Sam’s raised eyebrows are a delight, every time, cutting through his usual apathy with a joy so fierce it makes him wonder—
Well, enough of that. Another drink, another, and he’s again floating.
At some point in the evening he closes his eyes. He opens them, to the curls at James’ ear, at the nape of his neck. The breadth of those shoulders always seem to encompass his perceptual awareness. to block everything else out. And his smell is always a relief, a comfort he never quite understands.
After the first memorable incident, they don’t stray too far. A cheap hotel room, a bar bathroom, the hood of a car, the backseat (as cramped as he feared). On one occasion the gritty concrete patio of a midwestern motel. His shirt rucks up and his soft stomach is inflamed for days.
Zemo doesn’t know what exactly James thinks the two of them are doing. He has never so much as hinted at it while sober, and James seems all too happy to follow his lead. James, of course, is always sober, barring one incident with some Asgardian Mead obtained by quasi dubious means in High Town one visit to Sharon’s and revealed only upon their return to Riga. This marks the one time Zemo feels genuine fear in James’ presence. It is mid-afternoon and he is in the public baths. They are different from the Sokovian customs, but just similar enough that he can allow the flows of ritual to roll over him, subsume him in their precise ordering of the world. The relief of such direction overwhelms him, and he thinks as he sluices water from his skin, perched on the edge, that this might be the closest thing to peace he’s had since—
A harsh clatter from the front of the facility jolts him from his reverie. Raised, worried voices, and one near maniacal laugh, they bounce around the domed space, until it’s a cacophony, an invading army, a rapidly rising tide—His mind is blank, his skin numb. He can’t think, he can’t feel—
James rolls through like thunder, swerving a rather alarming amount. Wall to wall, on one such pass he tips into the cold pool. Zemo flinches at the splash, realizing on the heady rush of an inhale that he had forgotten to breathe. What few other patrons are there flee amidst the havoc. Some part of Zemo watches them go, tracks their progress, tactical (potential human collateral—unacceptable), nostalgic (old men, all of them, Slavic faces, he thinks of his father, his grandfather…). James surfaces and shakes like a dog, some wild mountain of a beast, flesh stretched, rippling over bone and sinew. He lunges—once, twice, and he has impossibly traversed the length of the facility, he is here, he is here—
James grabs him around the shoulders, throws them both in. Zemo can feel it when James metal hand—cradling his head—jars the pool floor, absorbing the would-be fatal impact, before he’s forced back up through the water. The swells, the near brush with his particular mortality, it all completely disorients him. Airborne, peculiarly weightless, he flings his gaze towards the exit, confirms that the last few men have scurried out.
His breath comes in heaving gasps—“James–James”—as the man in question hauls Zemo’s sopping form up out of the pool, splays him out on the tile. Zemo thinks he hears a ringing in his ears, his gaze flitting across the beautifully tiled ceiling, unable to focus.

The 6 interesting facts about Latvia
Latvia, a beautiful country nestled in Northern Europe, is often overshadowed by its larger neighbors, but it holds a wealth of history, culture, and natural beauty. From its ancient language to its breathtaking landscapes, Latvia is a land full of surprises. Though small, Latvia’s vibrant traditions and unique attractions make it a must-visit destination for curious travelers.
With its dense forests, stunning architecture, and a deep connection to its cultural roots, Latvia offers much more than meets the eye. Whether you're interested in exploring its UNESCO World Heritage sites or delving into its rich folk traditions, Latvia promises an unforgettable experience filled with fascinating facts that reflect the country’s enduring heritage and natural charm.
Tumblr media
Here are some interesting facts about Latvia.
1. The Language of Latvia Is Among the Oldest in the World:
One of the oldest and least altered languages in Europe is Latvian, which is a member of the Baltic language family. It is regarded as one of the oldest languages still in use, along with Lithuanian. Because Latvian keeps a lot of the characteristics of the early Indo-European languages, linguists from all over the world find it to be an interesting language to study. Latvians are extremely proud of maintaining their linguistic heritage because it is closely linked to their cultural identity.
2. It’s Home to the World’s Widest Waterfall:
Tumblr media
Although Latvia lacks massive mountains, it does have one amazing natural feature: the world's widest waterfall, Ventas Rumba. Ventas Rumba is situated in the town of Kuldīga and is more than 270 meters across. The waterfall is a well-liked destination for nature lovers despite its modest height due to its width and the serene beauty of the surroundings. Even as a place where fishermen used to catch fish as they jumped over the falls, the waterfall has played a significant role in the history of the area.
3. Song and dance have a rich tradition in Latvia:
Tumblr media
The rich heritage of folk music and dance in Latvia is among its most vibrant features. Tens of thousands of performers gather for Latvia's massive annual Nationwide Song and Dance Festival, which takes place every five years. The festival features choir performances and traditional Latvian songs and dances and has been acknowledged by UNESCO as a component of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This custom demonstrates Latvians' strong sense of unity and pride in their country, as well as their dedication to maintaining their rich cultural legacy.
4. Half of Latvia is covered by forests:
Tumblr media
With almost half of its land covered in forests, Latvia is renowned for its abundant greenery. A wide variety of wildlife, such as wolves, European bison, and lynxes, can be found in these enormous woodlands. In addition to being a vital component of Latvia's ecology, the country's forests have a profound impact on its history and culture. A common nickname for Latvia is the "land of blue lakes and green forests," and hiking, mushroom hunting, and berry foraging are popular outdoor pursuits.
5. Riga’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site:
Riga's capital city is a historical and architecturally rich treasure trove. UNESCO has recognized Riga's Old Town, with its medieval architecture and cobblestone streets, as a World Heritage Site. One of the best examples of Art Nouveau architecture in all of Europe can be found in this region. Numerous historical sites, such as the House of the Blackheads and the Dome Cathedral, can be found in Riga. It feels like a trip back in time to stroll through the Old Town because of the beautifully preserved buildings that offer a window into Latvia's illustrious past.
6. Beer is loved in Latvia:
Beer has a particular place in Latvian hearts due to the country's long history of brewing. The nation is home to numerous small, independent breweries that produce a wide range of distinctive and traditional beers. Latvia boasts a thriving and diverse beer culture, ranging from light and refreshing lagers to rich and dark beers. Popular events include beer festivals and tastings, and traditional Latvian pubs frequently serve local brews to guests. Beer has actually been a staple of Latvian social life and festivities for generations.
Conclusion
Latvia is a hidden gem in Northern Europe, offering a rich blend of cultural heritage, natural beauty, and intriguing history. From its ancient language to its dense forests and stunning architecture, Latvia’s unique characteristics make it a captivating destination. Whether you're exploring the wide Ventas Rumba waterfall or the historical streets of Riga’s Old Town, Latvia promises unforgettable experiences.
For those planning to visit, obtaining a Latvia visa is the first step toward discovering this remarkable country. A visa opens the door to explore Latvia’s charming landscapes, partake in its vibrant festivals, and immerse yourself in the local traditions. Latvia’s blend of old-world charm and natural wonders makes it an ideal destination for curious travelers.

Baltā Nakts 2021 TVC from Gints Apsīts on Vimeo.
VO: "Like an earthworm lost in the soil, I possess infinity, yet nothing is redundant. I inherit a thirst from the condors in the Andes, and draw insight from the full moon, the gliding skis, and the vast distances. A cat leaps from the hill to the pavement, foretelling the arrival of ships in Riga. A light bulb casts a yellow glow over broken glasses frames and ignited passions. The White Night is here - the one about which Chack dreamed."
This animated piece for the White Night Light Festival 2021 is an immersive journey through a dreamlike landscape, inspired by the poetry of Alexander Chack. In celebration of the poet's 120th anniversary, the voiceover interweaves elements of Chack's verse with vivid imagery.
In the animation, an earthworm curls in a straw, condors perch atop the Andes, sipping from its essence. This scene morphs into a full moon illuminating mountains, the peak revealed as a cat's tail. Awakened, the cat leaps into the pocket of a sleeping poet, resting beneath a streetlamp casting a yellow glow over him and his signature glasses. As the perspective pulls back, the poet and his lamp become part of a bustling, nocturnal cityscape. As more lights flicker on, the city springs to life, culminating in the bright illumination of the White Night Festival logo.
Adopting a solid color palette with simple, minimalist illustrations, the animation beckons viewers to enjoy the magical play of light at the festival, as dreamed up by Alexander Chack.
This lyrical, light-infused odyssey was brought to life through the combined copywriting of Alexander Chack and Ingus Josts, the skilled illustrations of Krišs Salmanis, and was directed and animated by Gints Apsīts.

VILNIUS, Lithuania (AP) — One person died and some 200,000 households were left without electricity in Lithuania and neighboring Latvia as strong storm winds and heavy rain pounded the Baltic nations overnight.
A 50-year-old woman was killed in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, by a falling tree on Monday, authorities said. Fire and rescue officials in both countries have received hundreds of emergency calls for fallen trees, damaged cars and flooded roads and fields.
In Lithuania, authorities warned people to travel only in urgent situations as the storm was bringing more severe winds and catastrophic levels of rain into most regions in the country of 2.8 million. In the districts of Šiauliai, Telšiai and Šilalė, a month’s worth of rain was recorded on Sunday and Monday, Lithuanian meteorologists said.
Weather experts said prevailing strong winds in Latvia are set to continue to raise water levels along the coast of the Gulf of Riga, and the Daugava river which runs through the capital, Riga, may flood.
Officials in Riga said early Monday that the capital’s central Dome Square has been temporarily closed due to the danger posed to the public by wind damage to a section of roof on the medieval Dome Cathedral.
In Vilnius, the Lithuanian capital, dozens of large trees were brought down by the powerful wind gusts, falling on roads, cars and houses.
A handful of flights were canceled or diverted to other airports in Lithuania as planes were unable to land in Vilnius or the second-city, Kaunas, due to the storm. There were also delays and cancellations on the rail network.
The southern part of Estonia, the third Baltic state, was also hit by heavy rain and storm winds but avoided major material damage.
The storm is expected to remain in the region at least until Monday afternoon.
