Fun Meet-Cute Prompts!

Except some of these are more chaotic than cute.

Person A is at the park sitting by the fountain while reading a book. Nearby in the big field, Person B is playing some sort of sports game with friends (maybe football or baseball or something idk, something that demands you run while barley paying attention to where you’re going) and in the process of running and trying to catch the ball, not paying attention to where they’re running, they accidentally crash into Person A and knock both into the water fountain. Assuming the book fell with them, A is probably upset over their book getting damaged. B is profusely trying to apologize and ask what they can do to make it up.

Person A and Person B are classmates and also two big mythology nerds (or maybe some other type of nerdism I’m just using mythology as a placeholder). Their next lesson in class is centered around mythology and when Person A says that a certain myth went down this certain way, Person B chimes in and argues that’s a little inaccurate. Cue an argument in front of the whole class that lasts longer than it should (and if the teacher is a little shit, next time it’s time to change assigned seating they seat both A & B next to each other as an ✨experiment✨)

Polyship where Person A is having trouble with the TSA at the airport. Read: starting a fight with the TSA agent of some sort. Person B is another person at the airport tryna get on a flight but notices Person A being given lots of trouble and goes to defend them while also playing up their natural born charisma to get A out of it, which A is in awe by. Meanwhile Person C is another worker at the airport who ALSO notices the TSA agent giving Person A a harder time and, being better with getting through to customers, tries to go to defend-escalate. And suddenly wow, Person A’s fighting spirit is kinda attractive and my lord, Person B sure does have a way with words.

Person A and B meet at a spice eating competition. A has the spice tolerance of a god meanwhile B is likely to shit their pants at the mildest of spices. Immediately B is smitten with A, and tries playing up how much they can handle as a form of impressing them. Unfortunately Person B becomes a fucking MESS almost immediately starting and honestly Person A finds that loserism more amusing and endearing than any impressive feat B could have accomplished.

Polyship Person A, B, C, & D meet on a cooking competition together. Their first impressions of each other is how well they work in the kitchen together under crunched time. Four people. In a kitchen together. Under crunched time. Imagine how fun that would be.

Person A accidentally hits Person B with their car. And maybe they woulda been more pissed about it but lowkey Person A is kinda cute wow it’s kinda great that this person will be sitting next to B in the ER room the whole time.

However many characters in your ship there are (tho I say the more the merrier) fighting over the last box of Little Bites in the store. Imagine at the end of it they all decide to just split the purchase of it and eat them all outside in the parking lot and get to know each other.

There’s a three-person ride and Persons A, B, and C all came to the amusement part in a squad of four so they all have to be separated from their respective friend groups and be put together for the ride. Which they obviously don’t mind. But mayhaps spice it up and the ride breaks down midway through. Spice it up some more and Person A has a massive fear of heights. Maybe Person G starts listing the different amusement parks related deaths they’ve heard about. Which obviously doesn’t help Person A. And then Person C is the one actually attempting to consolidate Person A.

Person A is a parent with a very small child. One day when out in public, said child zooms off into the crowd, freaking A the FUCK out. Person B notices A in distress and offers to help A look for their child. (You can easily make this polyamorous by making A also have a spouse that A probably also calls to come over and help 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️)

a/n: i wrote half of this when you sent that ask and totally forgot about it until this afternoon. i have so many requests i need to finish, it's so bad 💀 but i hope this is what you were looking for!!

“I don’t believe you.”

“It’s true!”

“There’s no freaking way; you’re totally bluffing.”

“I am not! Hey, if you need proof, ask Bonnie.”

You glance over at Bonnie, who’s sitting on the opposite side of the restaurant. She dines with one of her best friends, the both of them desperately needing a drink, they had announced. You originally went with them, but upon spotting Kai at the bar, abandoned their company to talk to the young witch. Damon begged you not to; he wanted you nowhere near him, yet you can’t help your interest in the boy. 

“Why would she know?” You ask instead. 

“‘Cause I flew her from Mystic Falls back to Portland.”

“Willingly?” 

“No, I had drugged her.”

“Kai!”

“She didn’t give me much of a choice! I had to get out of that stupid prison world, and she wasn’t going to let me out unless I manipulated my own way out. Unfortunately, I needed to use her to escape.”

A sigh leaves your lips. As much as you want to hate him for torturing her, you can’t blame his desperate need to get out of that hell. You hadn’t been in the prison world, but by the way the pair describe it, it’s a terrible place to be. To be stuck there for eighteen years, and then denied your only chance at freedom? Not to mention, Kai’s a sociopath who struggles with the way he’s supposed to feel about other people, and he’s insanely lacking in his social skills. What he did isn’t okay - not by a long-shot - though you can understand what drove him to do it. 

“Are you mad at me?” He asks, taking a sip of his drink. 

You cock your head, surprised by the question. “No, I just…”

“Hurting her was never my plan, I just needed to get out.”

Maybe it’s the alcohol talking. Maybe it's the effects of the merge. 

Regardless of which, you take it as a sign that Kai’s warming up to you. In that moment, you decide not to crush his tiny seed of trust. 

“...can’t believe you flew a plane,” you finish, changing the topic. 

Kai smiles. “But I did! It wasn’t a big one, it was a Cessna. One pilot - obviously, since I was the only one flying anything - and not meant for super long distances. Stopped for gas midway.” Then he mutters, “gave her a little more gas, too, so she’d sleep through it.” You ignore that part. “But I can promise you, I know how to fly.”

“You’ll have to prove it to me.”

“Yeah, I doubt anyone’s going to let that happen. I definitely don’t have a legal flying license.”

“We’ll convince Damon to compel someone to let you.”

“Something tells me he won’t support that.”

“All I’m hearing are excuses to keep you out of a cockpit.”

Your challenging tone has him straightening his posture. “You really don’t believe me?”

“Not one bit.”

“Fine. Then I will prove it to you.”

A week later, you’ve successfully convinced Damon to one, let Kai fly a plane short distance from one small airport to another; two, let you ride with him, and three; compel a pilot to let him borrow a plane, as well as compel everyone who would typically be involved to pay no attention to the unattended aircraft that will inhabit two runways and the open sky for roughly thirty minutes total. 

Bonnie, to say the least, is not happy about this plan. When you and Kai first approached their table in the grill to discuss it, she was pissed. Now, as Damon drives the three of you to the airport, she’s still lecturing you on the dangers of not only flying with an unlicensed flier, but for said flier to be Kai Parker, of all people. 

But to her dismay and Kai’s surprise, you shrug her off, promising you’ll be fine. 

“Okay,” Damon says, parking his car. “I’ve secured thirty minutes for you two dumbasses to do this. The flight distance is twenty miles, so your actual time in the sky should only be-”

“-about ten minutes,” Kai interrupts, “I know. I know what I’m doing.”

Damon ignores him and continues, “giving you ten minutes to start up, ten to fly, ten to land. I did some research of my own when you proposed this completely diabolical plan to me.”

“It’s not-”

“Do it quickly,” he ignores again, “and keep her safe.”

“Maybe compel him for that part,” Bonnie says.

“Smart.” Damon puts a hand on Kai’s shoulder. 

Kai shrugs him off. “You don’t need to compel me. I’ll keep her safe, I promise.”

Damon looks over to you.

“I trust him,” you affirm.

The man stares at you like you’ve grown a second head. 

“I’ll be okay,” you tell him, trying to ease his nerves. It doesn’t appear to work, but you don’t try again. “Kai?”

“Hm?”

“Ready?”

“Yep. See you guys in thirty.”

The plane is sitting in the middle of the runway, left alone with the keys, after Damon had compelled its owner away on a “super serious mission,” in which, if the man didn’t run inside and make Bonnie a coffee with specifically one and a half packs of sugar and a dash of peppermint mocha creamer, his new boss would fire him on the spot. Then, by the time he comes back and you and Kai are already in the sky, he’ll compel him to not freak out, but go to the neighboring airport for his plane, because it had been taken over by flying monkeys. 

Damon recites the second part of his plan as the pair of you climb into the plane. Bonnie rolls her eyes at him. None of you comment. 

“If I didn’t know any better, I’d say he’s having fun,” Kai says once out of earshot.

“Oh, he definitely is.”

Down below, Bonnie finally mutters, “I don’t even like peppermint mocha.”

“Well then I guess he’ll get fired.”

The girl rolls her eyes again. “Do you think she’ll be okay?”

“Y/N? With him? Hell no.” He sighs. “The minute our poor, actual, pilot comes back, we’re getting to that airport quickly.”

“Alright,” Kai sits down in the cockpit. You go to the seat beside him. “Put your seatbelt on.”

You fight the urge to giggle as he practically commands you to be safe. It’s so un-Kai-like. Then again, he is taking you five thousand feet into the air. 

“Okay,” he starts pointing to all the little instruments, “this is the speed, this is the altitude, this is the height above sea level, this is the rate of turn, this is the compass, and this is the vertical speed.” 

“How high above sea level are we right now?”

“Five hundred and ninety-four feet.”

“Ah.”

“These controls have a lot of explanation, and I better start so Damon doesn’t yell at me, but I can talk about them another time. Briefly, pedals down here, steering wheel - or yoke, in fancy people terms - here, throttle, and what controls the wings.” He points to the right of all that. “Communication stuff that I don’t use, to talk to other pilots, confirm take-off and landing and weather conditions and all that. Navigational systems.” He points to the left for those. “Ready?”

“Mhm.”

“Are you scared?”

“No.” Just a little. 

“Do you trust me?”

“Yes.” Hopefully that’s the right choice. 

“Okay. Up we go.”

The boy quiets as he starts up the plane. You can’t help but admire his concentration. 

Kai manages the controls carefully, and before you know it, you’re lifting off the ground. Your hand flies to the side door, gripping the handle bar subconsciously. 

“You okay?” He peeks over at you. He could practically feel you tense up, although he expected you would. 

“Mhm,” you nod.

He’s not entirely convinced, but there’s nothing he can do about it now. He continues gaining altitude, and before you know it, you’re completely in the sky. 

“You still good?”

“Yeah.”

“Need any sleeping pills?”

“Kai!”

“I’m just joking!” 

You look over and playfully roll your eyes at his teasing, dimpled face. He’s glad he’s cute, otherwise there’s no way you would’ve actually gone through with this idea. Thinking about it now, it’s totally crazy - letting a boy you barely know fly you into the sky when he doesn’t even have a license. But for some reason, you trust him, and as he effortlessly controls the plane as it travels through the blue beyond, you’re confident about placing your trust in him.

Although… your friends down below are probably losing their shit…

“How high are we?” You ask, distracting yourself from that thought. No reason to worry about it now.

“You sure you want to know?” He laughs.

“Hit me.”

“Oh, alright,” he checks the meter, “about eight thousand feet up.”

When your eyes go wide, he chuckles. “Scared?”

“I trust you,” you assure both him and yourself. 

That answer seems to relax him. A gentleness settles in his eyes, brightening the usual gray to a color more like that which surrounds you. Your grip on the door handle eases up, and you ride in silence for a while, appreciating the journey. 

After a couple of minutes, he announces, “coming up on the airport.”

“Already?”

“It was only about a ten minute flight.”

“Damn.”

“Do you think we’ll see our unhappy co-conspirators on the ground?”

You snort, then immediately cover your mouth. Kai only smiles. “Definitely. Shaking their heads and rolling their eyes.”

“Surprised I didn’t crash the damn thing.”

“Or kidnap me.” He starts to laugh, but then pauses, unsure if you’re joking. But then you start to laugh at your own joke and he takes it as a sign that he can laugh along with you. “Guess this means I believe you… you really can fly a plane.”

“Don’t praise me yet, we haven’t landed.”

“What?!”

“Easy, I’m kidding. Landing will be just as smooth as take off was. I’ve gotcha.”

And it is. He skillfully lands the plane with minimal roughness, and maintains a good distance away from the distraught-looking pair. When he turns off the engine, he throws you the keys and a wink. 

You barely catch them, then let out a laugh. “I’ll admit, I’m impressed.”

“Why thank you, Y/N.”

“So how did you learn, really?” “Books, manuals, and lots of trial and error.”

“How bad of an error?”

“Died once or twice… or more… but I couldn’t actually die in the prison world, so I’d just crop back up and try again.”

“Ouch.”

He shrugs. “But that’s all over now.”

“You have to be more careful to avoid situations that could get you hurt now.” He narrows his eyes at you, making you confused by his reaction. “No more trial and error anything. If you’re not in the prison world, you’re susceptible to getting hurt, or worse, and I’m not letting that happen on my watch.”

“I’m on your watch now?”

“Well… yeah.” You shrug, “I mean, in terms of reckless behavior, yeah. You’re my friend, and I want you to be able to live now that you’re not stuck in that Groundhog Day world, but in order to do that, you have to be safe and avoid situations where you could get hurt.”

“You consider me a friend?”

“Is that okay?”

“Yes,” he answers quickly, “I’ve just… never had a friend before.”

“Well you do now. And your friend is super impressed by your flying skills, but wants you to stay safe, too, okay?”

“Okay.”

“Good.”

“But you weren’t scared, right? This wasn’t brought on because you thought I was gonna crash, was it?”

“‘Course not, I had full faith in you the entire time. I only got worried when you said you died trying to learn.”

“Oh.”

“So no more of that, right? You can impress me with all the skills you already know, but no more near-death experiences. Promise?”

“I promise.”

“Thank you. I-” Your next words are cut off by your own scream as someone knocks on the plane door. Looking down, you see Damon reaching up. 

“Get on out of there, you lovebirds. We have to return this plane to its actual pilot.”

“Ugh.” You both roll your eyes, but listen to the man. Kai comes around to your side as soon as he’s out. He puts a stabilizing hand on your shoulders, which comes in handy when you stumble with your first step. 

“You okay?” Both men ask at once.

“Good. I always trip when I leave airplanes, too.”

A few feet away stands an annoyed looking Bonnie. “Glad to see you’re still alive.”

“Glad to see you, too, Bon. Alive and well.”

“You could’ve-”

Her retort is interrupted by the pilot running over for his keys. “Those flying monkeys! Have they returned my plane?!”

Damon tosses the keys to him. “Yep, good as new! Not a scratch!”

“Oh, thank god! Thank god. I was afraid I’d never see it again. If you find those monkeys, can you tell them I’m really upset, and that they need to go away?!”

“Of course I will. You have a good day.” The pilot runs away and Damon turns towards you and Kai. “You heard the man, time to go.” He shuffles you into the car, stuffing you both in the backseat again, Bonnie in the front, and starts the drive back to town. 

The forty minute drive is quiet, everyone too afraid to get on Bonnie’s nerves, but you and Kai text in the back.

kai: i’m glad you let me show you my skills :)

kai: but i’ll keep your promise, no more dying

y/n: good

kai: thanks for the friendship. i’m glad to have you

y/n: me too

y/n: i knew i was gonna like you the minute damon complained about you

kai: wait, really?

“Why are you smiling?” Damon’s voice cuts through the silence. He eyes Kai through the back mirror.

“Me?”

“Yes, you.”

“Ummm…”

“Because I told him what you said when you got out of the prison world about me befriending him. Seems you were right.”

“I said that as a joke.”

“Yet you hit it right on the nose.”

Damon huffs. “Well I also said he was annoying, and that’s true, too.”

“Maybe, but it just so happens that I like his,” you use quotation marks with your fingers, “‘annoying’ qualities, just as much as I like the rest of him, too.”

“It’s your headache, Y/N.”

You only shrug.

WONDER : Advice...?

IGOR : However, I would first like to express my gratitude that you are still safe and sound. I told you that I wanted to see you again, and you have fulfilled that wish for me.

IGOR : Not only that, you have revealed to me another possible path forward...

WONDER : Another path forward...?

IGOR : Ah, are you "curious" to know? Hehehe...Very well. I believe you have the power to make others aware of the "desires" they have forgotten.

Wonder's eyes snap open and he sits up in bed, realizing that it is Ruferu who has been tapping his forehead with his beak in hopes of waking him up.

RUFERU : Sorry to disturb you so early, but there's something important I need to report. 

RUFERU : I know that I told you I would explain everything, but there is something I must investigate first. Once I figure out what's going on, I promise to tell you everything I know.

RUFERU : I'll stop by your school during lunch break to find you. I just wanted to let you know that I haven't forgotten our agreement.

MOM : It's been years since your dad and I traveled alone.

MOM : Look forward to tons of souvenirs! 

MOM : I left you some Yen on the table, don't spend it too recklessly. 

MOM : Oh, and remember to stay safe and lock the door. I'll message when we get there. 

WONDER : (Oh yeah, I totally forgot mom and dad are going on vacation...They said it would be a couple of weeks before they come back...On the note of locking the door, mom always does, so Ruferu must have got through my window...I better make sure to shut it properly...Anyway! I'm gonna be late for school!)

With that, Wonder heads out the front door. Before he can rush to school, a woman comes over to speak with him.

WONDER : Yeah, I'm Wonder...

INNOVATIVE WOMAN : Oh my~ It really is you! It's been such a long time. You went and grew into a handsome young man~! You haven't forgotten me, have you? It's me, Kayo Tohyama. 

KAYO TOHYAMA : I'm your next door neighbor. You kids grow up so fast~ I talk to your mom from time to time~ Oh dear, I'm so sorry, you must be heading to school, right?

KAYO TOHYAMA : This school uniform...You must be attending Kokatsu Academy?

Lindsey Shaw is reflecting on one of the most difficult times in her life, both personally and professionally.

In Wednesday’s episode of Ned’s Declassified Podcast Survival Guide (which you can watch in the video above), Shaw recalls the painful moment in 2014 when she learned that she was being let go from her role as Paige McCullers on then-ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars.

“I got called into [series creator Marlene King’s] office, and she was just like, ‘So, we’re gonna let you go,'” Shaw says, adding that she was told, “It’s not because of your acting.”

Shaw knew the real reason. In recent years, she has become comfortable speaking candidly about struggles with drugs and alcohol, as well as with her relationship to food and her body, and the toll they’ve all taken on her life and career.

“I just gave away everything I cared about,” she says. “I don’t know that I’ve ever gotten back to the point in my career that I was before that talk, that meeting, or that whole season of using. It’s a f–ing lot, dude. Caring about your body can make you go in all different directions, from plastic surgery to drugs to withholding to any kind of s–t.”

Still, Shaw remains grateful to the PLL team for handling her exit “with so much care,” both on and off screen. Not only did the writers craft a beautiful goodbye scene for her character midway through Season 5, but Shaw also recalls King asking if she had someone to talk to about what she was going through. When Shaw replied that she didn’t have anyone, King, replied, “We’ll find somebody.”

As for that beautiful scene, Shaw remembers that she and co-star Shay Mitchell “couldn’t even talk” between takes while filming Paige and Emily’s airport goodbye. “We just hugged each other and let it be what it was,” she says.

And Shaw, of course, will forever appreciate that the producers brought Paige back to wrap things up in the show’s seventh and final season.

“I used that show as a therapy session every time I went in,” Shaw says. “I cried harder there than I did in that whole six years by myself. Everything went into Paige. … It was a great and crazy and scary and sad and wonderful and tragic ride.”

6:18am, 19th september 2024, international speak like a pirate day. I embark on a grim journey to the land I, in a prior age called home. In this entry I feel compelled to engage in the time-honoured tradition of authors to complain about the state of airline travel. My woes naturally start long before the clock struck midnight marking the beginning of this most dour day, wherein i had to strike a fine balance in booking my passage. I was in no short supply of options in terms of times, airlines and spans of my visit, but the constraining factors of: being present for a long distance cycle my mother had planned, being present for a sufficiently long time to compensate for the months i have spent in spain away from her doting presence, not staying so long that i might cause my beloved to expire from a broken heart, and the ever-present question of money. Sadly, all these constraints, combined with my choice of departure airport, Alicante, and eventual destination, Dublin, coalesced into a singular grim realisation, that I would have to travel with the airline known as ryanair. Even as I write this passage the feeble of mind, and weak of will, queue in the priority boarding line for my flight...no matter, I shall air my grievances with them at a measured rate. The process of booking a ryanair flight is an exercise in observation, focus and force of will, their website (being the sole avenue by which you can reliably aquire a booking) is a veritable labyrinth of additional charges, extra luggage, travel insurance, in-flight meal pre-orders, shoe-shining services, proprietary travel insurance, novelty ryanair airplane models, giftcards, snowglobes, at-destination car rentals and priority boarding options. If you can navigate this gauntlet of extra charges you will be asked to give the company a scan of your face via webcam to verify your identity and sell onto third party data brokers, and only then, will you be offered the ticket of your dreams at an affordable price. And for now you are granted reprieve, until the day of your journey.

5am is not an hour I voluntarily awake to any engagement, nay, it is a mark of the clock i reserve for stumbling home after a night of frivolities cut short, or the midway point of an average session of Sid Meiers Civilization. Regardless, this was the time whence I was roused from my slumber. I awake to the sound of hatsune miku singing melodious lyrics over the sound of a percussive instrumentation. I silence the phone alarm and take in the surroundings of the sitting room of a friend of the family who lives nearby. Two hours to take-off, cutting things pretty close in the grand scheme of things, but i am already checked in online to keep check-in desk operators to a minimum, my boarding pass is on my phone to save the cost of ink and paper, and cabin luggage is heavily encouraged to curb the cost of luggage handlers. Indeed with such a barebones itinerary 2 hours might just suffice. Instant coffee, a perfectly fine breakfast, exchanged pleasantries, a short car ride and a sincere adieu. I am on my own, with just my purse and a small backpack to carry me through this journey. One last deep breath of crisp morning air and I enter the terminal. Air travel has changed in hops and skips over the 20 something years ive been cognizant of it, never had the privilege of flying pre-9/11 when you could board a plane with a machette, a loaded gun, a lit cigar and a caraffe of double-proof rum. No no, in this day and age I find myself wondering if security is going to take exception to the baking paper-wrapped bowl of homemade marmalade i intend to take aboard.

And so, bloated with the oversized second coffee i took moments after entering the terminal, i waddle towards the waiting xray machines. My boarding pass persuades the electronic gates, which mercifully stand eight-abreast, as six of them are giving no end of trouble to my fellow travellers, unyielding in their cold logic, that the crumpled piece of home printed paper clutched in hand does not constitute a proper boarding pass. I throw my bag and purse into a scanning tray, just as it is picked up by the rubbery grasp of the conveyor belt, i remember to toss my phone in too, and moments before i walk through the metal detector gate i am beckoned to place my "jacket" in too. I flail my jumper, which contains no metals to speak of, over the plastic divider and cleanly into my second scanning tray, moments before it dissapears into the dark maw of the x-ray machine. I step through the metal detector gate and am spared the indignity of a randomly selected cavity search this time. A hapless gentleman in front of me is halted as his satchel contains contraband, the security officer spends a full eight minutes searching the satchel which seemed to contain a total of three pens, before producing a swiss army knife no bigger than a fig, the officer takes the contraband aside, a beloved family heirloom no doubt, dangles it above the disposal bin, looking towards the man, and with a shrug as if to convey "sorry, we are just doing our job, like the gestappo were" drops the knife into the void. The man seems to utter some words, in protest or resignation, i cannot tell, for his voice seems distant and muffled from the depths of his own personal orwellian inferno. After this charade has held up the line for the better part of half an hour, my bag finally emerges from the machine, a second security officer, perturbed by the queer orientation of my bag and the grey ovoid cast by the silhouette of the marmelade on the x-ray image, enters a prolonged groping session with my luggage, their practiced hands capable of ascertaining the presence of class 5 drugs and plastic explosives alike through up to 20cm of clothing and flesh, with nought but an authoratative squeeze. Seemingly unsatisfied by the thorough molestation of my bag, it is taken to the mouth of the machine and put through again at a more neurotypical angle. And with one final squeeze for the Jansport to remember them by, my luggage is relinquished, and i am set free into the purgatory of duty-free.

Before I am permitted to even gaze upon my boarding gate, I am funneled through a winding path of liquor, cigarettes and chocolates, my senses blinded by the lights of images of naked, impossibly muscled men and cloying scent of their advertised fragrances, allegedly akin to what these bearded millionaires' perspiration must actually smell like. I resist the urge to lick the lcd projection of Adrian Brody's photoshopped abs long enough to escape the duty-free labyrinth. As I make my way towards my gate I pass a sign advertising a meal deal of a sandwhich, drink and packet of crisps for €23.99, and I begin to ponder the feverish pasageway i just exited. For once upon a time, airside retail was a wonderfully novel idea, exploiting a loophole which permitted travellers bound for foreign countries to be sold luxury products without the need to apply value added tax, at least that is my understanding of the practice. For decades, family members arriving from abroad would brandish colossal toblerone bars, 5 liter bottles of gin, and 1000-count cartons of cigarettes to fend off the hordes of encroaching relatives, all at a price that would be foolish to turn down. But at time of writing, i know this to be a mere fantasy, and the duty-free section a relic of a bygone era. Previous excursions would have me noting prices of whiskeys, and calculating value ratios down to the alcVol/ml€^2. But now, not only is it no longer worth it, it is actually more expensive than simply buying the products from your local supermarket. Regardless, I drift into the boarding gate hall.

The term "liminal spaces" has garnered a reputation in recent times as abandoned office buildings crawling with entirely tangible dangerous monsters. But a liminal space is by definition, just an area that you pass through. In this moment, walking the length of the vast boarding hall of Alicante airport, I feel its liminality soothing, the stalls and stands of business and enterprise fade from my mind as the polished tile floors pass beneath my feet, and I in turn pass beneath the grand cupolas of the terminals ceiling high above, as the travellator carries me along like some new fangled machine from turn of the century futurist novel. I pass through a passport check, the man in the booth does not look at either my face or the photo in my maroon passport booklet, simply holds it to a scanner that detects the digital chip in its binding. An obfuscated security system notes my presence in the terminal, and I am allowed through. Before I know it, I am in front of the ryanair boarding gate, and i am once again thoroughly grounded in reality.

Michael Oleary is the worst thing to happen to air travel since George Bush. Me and my ilk have tangled with ryanair and their ways in the past, and we have not always come away unscathed. They will humiliate you in front of your loved ones, tear down any semblance of dignity and pride you once held. They will charge you for checking in late, checking in early, not printing your boarding pass, and they will tear you to shreds if you so much as dare to speak out against them. You see, flying with ryanair is not just a test of your administrative ability in procuring a ticket at the advertised price from their labyrinthine website, it is a test of charisma, deception and self-control. "Why yes I believe its quite reasonable to wear a rainjacket, scarf and jumper in these exotic climes. Well what does it matter that I just took them out of my bag? Speaking of, lets check it fits in the sizing box...yes, yes that looks like a good fit, and with minimum groping too." The snootiest of the discount airline flyers have finished their priority boarding, and after a time I step to the line at the boarding gate. My eyes dart frantically from one overburdened boarding staff person to the other, thoughts of 'Does my fanny-pack count as a bag?', 'Surely it would count as a personal item...' and 'Shit, which pocket did I leave my boarding pass in?! Oh right its on my phone...' "I know I was asked to print this out, but I think if I just turn up the screen brightness it-" the staff do not care...this time... I join the masses on the slow march down the finger and into the fuselage, but wait- whats the meaning of this? The finger is cordoned off by a fabric belt!? The crowds descend a stairwell to the barren tarmac below, the finger lies limp and unpiloted as we are ushered through lethal traffic of tarmac buses and luggage trains, to our awaiting aircraft.

Approaching the stairs up to the aircraft doors, I furiously fight the urge to pose alluringly for a photo-op within the aircraft's turbine intake, or to pet the underside of the plane like a beached whale. After another eternity of waiting for everyone in front of me to finish their shuffling about and stowing their seats, I am finally permitted to take my seat in the most cramped space three people have ever been seated abreast in, since the trans-atlantic slave trade. By the end of the flight my leg muscles will have cramped into a gordian knot, that will take months of physiotherapy to recover from. Regardless, it is not too long before we are taxi'd and ready for takeoff. As the turbines engage I feel pressed into the tiny seat by the sudden g-forces of takeoff, I glance out the window as the wings catch the air beneath them. I guess no matter how harrowing they make the experience to get here, I can never get over the novelty of the ground pulling away beneath us. As we ascend to cruising altitude we veer out over the meditteranean in cloudy conditions, and we ascend into the cloud cover of this dreary grey morning. But then, moments later a most curious sight appears out the window. A vista of fields made of clouds like cotton balls, and the colours of a sunrise in dream-like pinks and pale yellows, an incandescing red eye peers through the clouds, the sky above turning a light turqoise as I gaze at this wondrous sight, the alto-stratus clouds in the far distance are painted a gleaming silver, the sun peaks above the cloudline in a blinding flare, the light of its incorrigible fusion reaction uncontested by the overcast sky, the interior of the cabin, moments ago, illuminated by nought but some scant blue LEDs, is now painted by rays of otherworldly gold, ryanairs signature gaudy mustard-stain-yellow on cigarette-smoke-stained-blazer-blue interior furnishings, almost looking good in this majestic illumination. The sunrise continues with a divine indifference to the joy and suffering of the world below, and for a time all the snark and snide is knocked out of me, seemingly left on the tarmac far below, as I beheld the sights no human was ever meant to see, riding on the wings of a man-made miracle.
