Wow, you know, I didn't actually think that this was about Sana's ill-advised romantic choices xD I thought it was more of a "person we all trusted who turned around and screwed us over", BUT YEAH I see the connection to Campbell hitting on Sana now. Damn. 😂
in retrospect, soooo rude of Arkady to see one (1) person hit on Sana and go damn, this is just like that time you were hooking up with the son of the owners of our prison planet and then he bailed, thus scrambling our uprising plans

Trailer Bowl LVIII
Fine, not all these trailers were from the Super Bowl, but they came out this past month, so might as well take care of all of them:
Immaculate: Nun gets supernaturally pregnant with a demon. Yikes.
Road House (remake): Sorry Jake Gyllenhaal, you're not Patrick Swayze.
Ricky Stanicky: Zac Efron and his buddies hire John Cena to pose as the imaginary friend they made up to get away from their wives and families for the past 20 years. Oh, this better end with one of the friends getting divorced when the jig is up, but knowing it's a Farrelly Brothers movie, I doubt it.
Monkey Man: Dev Patel gets to be a vigilante, and it looks AWESOME.
Despicable Me 4: Gru has a baby now. And we get Will Ferrell as the bad guy.
Tarot: Yup, tarot cards get a horror movie now. Makes sense.
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare: True (albeit very fictionalized) story about British spies fighting Nazis. Hey, one of them is Henry Cavill, I'm game.
A Quiet Place Day One: Prequel where everyone learns that sound=death by aliens. Somehow, it doesn't feel the same. We already KNOW what happened...
Twisters: A sequel? Really? I heard about it, but I still can't really believe it, because it seems so unnecessary.
Wicked: I don't care if it's all green screen and split in half, I'm still excited for this. And Cynthia's "Defying Gravity" riff sounds fine, you're all just mean.
Deadpool and Wolverine: Darn, I was really hoping for "Deadpool and Friends" for the Garfield reference and to rip on Pratt's Garfield. But oh well, it looks like the MCU is going to get skewered nonetheless. Happy day!

Best books I’ve read this year: end of year edition
I read a lot of great books this year so it’s really hard to narrow down my favorites, but here are some I read during the past six months that I most enjoyed. (You can read part one here).
Best new releases: fiction
Not a ton of novels I loved but I thought Afghan American author Jamil Jan Kochai’s short story collection The Haunting of Hajji Hotak was absolutely stellar.
Honorable mentions: Flight by Lynn Steger Strong and Small Game by Blair Braverman.
Best new releases: nonfiction
Partisans by Nicole Hemmer - argues convincingly that Trump was the natural evolution of decades of reactionary GOP politics, not an abberration.
Ducks by Kate Beaton - amazing graphic memoir by the Hark, A Vagrant writer about working in the Alberta oil sands to pay off her student debt. An incredible portrait both of what it’s like growing up working class in a small town and the sacrifices that entails and the trauma of being one of the few women in a very harsh working environment.
Strangers to Ourselves by Rachel Aviv - fascinating series of vignettes by one of my favorite New Yorker writers exploring different people’s perceptions of mental illness and how we can become trapped in our own narratives.
By Hands Now Known: Jim Crow’s Legal Executioners by Margaret A. Burnham - this was hard to stomach because of the depth of cruelty it described but is well worth reading to understand just how all-encompassing a reign of terror Jim Crow was for black Southerners.
Getting Me Cheap: How Low Wage Work Traps Women and Girls in Poverty by Amanda Freeman and Lisa Dodson - Damning Indictment of how this country treats poor people and how women and girls, particularly single mothers, bear the worst burden.
We Need to Build: Field Notes for a Diverse Democracy by Eboo Patel - I would get every left-of-center person to read this if I could.
Honorable mentions: His Name Is George Floyd by Robert Samuels and Toluse Olorunnipa and Bad Jews by Emily Tamkin.
Best fiction (non new)
I ended up reading a lot of fiction by 20th century European authors, and particularly loved The Radetzky March by Joseph Roth, The Post-Office Girl by Stefan Zweig, Everything Flows by Vassily Grossman and The Years by Annie Ernaux. Reading these felt like getting a little tour of the century, particularly of how radically modern Europe was shaped by WWI and WWII.
Boy Parts by Eliza Clark and In a Lonely Place by Dorothy Hughes were my two other favorites, and are of a pair in that they’re refreshing (despite being over 60 years old in one case) takes by woman writers on a specific style of novel and make incredible use of an unreliable narrator.
Best nonfiction (non new)
I continued to read a lot of nonfiction about abortion and most appreciated The Girls Who Went Away by Ann Fessler, which details the human cost of the “baby scoop” era and Beggars and Choosers by Rickie Solinger, which criticizes the shift from rights to choice-based language in discussions of reproductive politics.
I also really enjoyed Mark Lilla’s The Shipwrecked Mind about reactionary politics, which honestly felt like a better version of The Decadent Society and Minor Feelings: An Asian American Reckoning by Cathy Park Hong, which was written before the pandemic and felt extremely prescient about a lot of the discourse of the past few years.
Best poetry
I didn’t read a ton of poetry that really grabbed me but I enjoyed Sherry Shenoda’s The Mummy Eaters, which explores the author’s Coptic Egyptian heritage. From previous years, I enjoyed Philip Metres’ Shrapnel Maps and Richie Hofmann’s Second Empire.

The Conservatives have been in power since 2010. They have visited upon us austerity, inequality, Brexit, corruption, an almost willful incompetence, lethal xenophobia and migrant-bashing, and a “culture war”, largely provoked by themselves, cynically feeding on their supporters’ sense of self-pity – an extended exercise in gaslighting in which perpetrators claim to be victims. Satire has found itself struggling in the face of grotesques such as Boris Johnson and Priti Patel – a reboot of Spitting Image failed spectacularly because if anything it made the trolls by whom we had the misfortune to be governed seem less beyond the pale than they actually were. Despite all that, or perhaps in the face of it, British comedy at its best has become a haven of considerateness, diversity, multiculturalism, richer in its comedic detail and observation and truth to reality than ever before. Certain notions of what comedy should be, while still prevalent, are increasingly discredited. Take the idea that comedy should be “edgy”, a belief persisted in by, among others, Ricky Gervais. This seemingly sharp, rebel imperative has been exposed by, among others, the standup comic James Acaster, as a libertarian pretext for punching down. It was as if to counter the pain and division, at times seemingly deliberate political callousness and strife, that comedy made its dialectical shift from cruelty to kindness as the 00s gave way to the 2010s. At its best it has become not merely banally escapist but a genuine and humane haven. It is a world away from our broken world, and yet British comedy has never been in a better moral state. It has been strengthened by its inclusivity, its diversity, its neurodiversity, all the embedded values of political correctness. It is no longer merely the stories of angry or frustrated white men, though white men are certainly given a more than fair representation in the modern British comic firmament. And it’s this concern for inclusion, as embodied in the work of a Bethany Black, that gives rise to the kindness I allude to: a determination never to punch down, a rule to which even Frankie Boyle solemnly abided in 2020, despite his form earlier in his career.

Ricky enters the cafeteria, his sack of Pringles, cheese cubes, and ham slices ("It's deconstructed, Rick!") Hanging by his side.
Let's see.... Gina, Kourtney, and Maddox all have C Lunch, Big Red is sick, Ashlyn is helping Mr Mazzara with the STEM Club, and Seb and Carlos are sitting outside today for their 'date'.
He looks around the room. Emmy is with her freshman friends, and Dani and Mack are settled into their distinct 'popular' clique.
That means....There he is!
Ricky strolls over to a table just under the stairs, where Jet is hunched with his head down, drink and wrapper forgotten.
Ricky: Hey man, what's up?
Jet sits silently for a moment before slightly raising up to look at him, clear tear tracks streaming down his cheeks.
Ricky: Oh! Hey, hey what's going on?
Jet: I'm waiting...
Ricky: waiting for what?
Jet: I don't know, the world to break, I should be happy, my grades are good, Maddie's happy, I haven't had to see my parents in months, I finally got so therapy, AND MADDIE GOT IT TOO! but I just feel....stuck, like I can't get comfortable.
Ricky: ...hey, I'm sorry man....have you talked to Patel about this?
Jet: no, I'm going to, I just need to sit for a while and put myself back together.
Ricky: you want some chips? I got that brand you like?
Jet: no I had something. Can, can we just sit here, and listen to music.
Ricky: I hope you like The Greatest Showman, I'm trying to study, Maddox is scary when she's mad.
Jet: she's harmless... you got Other side?

Nini watched as Dean Patel walked away, her heart in her throat. How was this going to work? How was she going to tell— “Hey.”
She spun around, the sudden appearance of someone behind her with no warning, scaring her out of her skin. “Gina!” Of course, she was far too good at walking silently. “You scared me.”
“Sorry.” Gina looked sheepish. She rocked on her feet. This was perhaps the most nervous Nini had seen her. “So… I hear you're leaving.”
“What? You were listening? How long were you standing there!” Nini had had this secret for a couple of seconds. How could it already be out to be shared. Not that Gina was the type of person… Gina was frowning.
“Huh? I didn't hear any of that, I just… assumed. Kourtney said the dean of a fancy school was here, and you were talking to someone with a clipboard. I just assumed it was a done deal.” She crossed her arms and shrugged. “Am I wrong? I can't imagine they could see you out there and not see your talent.”
Nini tried to pretend she wasn't blushing at the unexpected compliment. “No you… you got it.”
“Oh.” While Gina smiled convincingly, she watched as her shoulders slumped and her arms dropped back to her sides to fiddle with her jacket. “I'm happy for you, Nini. You deserve this.”
Frowning, Nini grabbed at her backpack straps. “Are you sure? Is there something wrong with me going?”
“No! No. You've earned this. I just learned I'm able to stay a bit longer and… it might be selfish, but I wish you were able to stay too.” She smiled and then looked down, huffing a laugh. “And I'm glad I learned this before I made a fool of myself.”
“What were you going to do?” Nini stared at her and watched as something morphed on her face.
“Nothing important. It doesn't matter.” Ricky walked in, and Gina tensed even more, and the expression on her face hardened even after he had walked out again. Nini barely paid any attention to anything except staring directly at her. Something was missing here. Gina grinned and nodded like she wasn't acting weird. “Go and enjoy yourself.”
Nini crossed her arms and stood using all of her height. It didn't make much difference, but it made her feel more confident. “No. What were you going to tell me? I'm not leaving you when you're worried about something. You can't make a fool of yourself with me, I would never tell anyone something you told me in confidence. I'm not that kind of person. I—”
“I was going to tell you I love you!” Gina's eyes widened, and her hands covered her mouth.
She wasn't the only one surprised. Nini felt like she swallowed her tongue in her shock. Love? Gina… loved her?
“I didn't mean to say it like that. I didn't really mean to say that at all. I'm sorry. I was going to do something sweet. Something nice and poetic like you deserve, but I'm no good at that.” She shook her head and laughed, rubbing at her face. “I wasn't going to say anything cliche but… don't leave me. No, that wasn't—I'm sorry. I'm making a mess of this. Don't go.”
“Gina…”
Gina grabbed her hand in hers. They were soft, and Nini smiled at her automatically. They had grown so much since the first time they held hands. She couldn't believe… “Please. I put off telling you because I thought I had to leave, and now I know I don't. Don't leave me.This is the least dignified thing I've done. I love you. I'm begging. Don't go.”
She shook her head a little but didn't move her hands away. “I can't—”
“I've fucked this spectacularly but I know I haven't made up the way you look at me. I can't be feeling this alone. Nini…”
She was tearing up, and Nini was right there with her. “I don't know. I haven't thought about it. Ricky…”
Gina's face fell, and she started to pull back. Nini let her. “I'm sorry, Gina. Ricky and I just got back together. And I have to leave. I can't stay here any longer; it doesn't feel like home anymore.”
“Oh.” Gina whispered. “This is the only place I've ever felt at home.”
“That's why you have to stay, and I have to go. I'm really sorry, Gina. This just… doesn't work.”
“Right.” Gina laughed a sad little tune. She closed her eyes and shook her head. ”That makes sense. Good luck at YAC, Nini. I won't tell anyone.”
“I'll do the same.” Nini nodded and almost went for a hug, but she could see something closing on Gina's face and wanted to give her a moment to do it without anything hurting her. Nini's pretty sure a hug from her would break her.
“Thanks.” Gina walked away. Why did Nini feel the same as that day Ricky left her alone in her bedroom? Why does she feel like she should go after her?
Why did she regret kissing Ricky?
